/r/trackandfield NEW BANNER CONTEST - submit entries here by 7/21/26 to be eligible for voting
Hello everyone, our plan is to have a subreddit banner contest every year to keep the place fresh. Anyone can submit an image here, if you want it to be considered. After the deadline (7/21/26 at 11:59pm East Coast) there will be a new thread for voting on the submissions. Depending on the number of submissions, we may need to have a finalist vote with top submissions. We'll see how it goes.
We're also planning on doing a contest for the subreddit logo, so look out for that in the future, if you're interested in submitting for that too.

T&F General Discussion Wired on Youth Trackflation
Interesting to see a mainstream publication pick up on this. Some stuff we've all heard about a ton—shoes, bicarb, etc. But I guess I didn't realize how much young athletes now travel for meets that boast about producing fast times.

T&F Stats Men's 100m is getting faster at an incredibly rate. The number of athletes running sub-10 has nearly quadrupled since 2010.
Pulled some data on how many distinct athletes have run a legal sub-10 second 100m each year since 2010. The trend is pretty staggering in my opinion.
| Year | Athletes sub-10 |
|---|---|
| 2010 | 13 |
| 2011 | 20 |
| 2012 | 20 |
| 2013 | 14 |
| 2014 | 20 |
| 2015 | 27 |
| 2016 | 25 |
| 2017 | 21 |
| 2018 | 21 |
| 2019 | 19 |
| 2020 | 4 |
| 2021 | 24 |
| 2022 | 36 |
| 2023 | 40 |
| 2024 | 36 |
| 2025 | 40 |
| 2026 | 47 |
Legal wind only, outdoor, distinct athletes per season. 2020 is obviously COVID. 2026 is still ongoing.
A few things stand out. 2010 to 2015 was relatively flat, hovering around 13 to 27. Then something shifts post-2021 and the numbers jump dramatically. 2022 onwards is a completely different era with 36 to 47 athletes per year clearing the barrier that once defined absolute elite sprinting.
Sub-10 used to be a career landmark. Now 47 athletes are doing it in a single season, and the season is only half way.
Is this better training methods, better tracks and spikes, deeper global talent pools, or something else? Genuinely curious what people think is driving the post-2021 explosion specifically.

Spoiler on the run I'm most impressed by, start of Day 4 Highlights. Shoutout to Linda Botkova smashing the U18 European 400mH record, that has stood for 43 years. This puts her #2 All-Time for U18s (only Sydney has ran faster) & 12th All-Time for U20s

T&F General Discussion Whats up with all the sprinters skipping USAs? (discuss)
Like ..... do people not want to run the three rounds, risking injury or something?
Or people peaking for The Ultimate thing, because there is actual real money on the line now? (and not bothering with USAs)

T&F General Discussion Kerr’s WR kickstart into more?
With the hype behind Josh Kerr breaking a long standing, almost thought to be impossible record, do you believe that he just started a new wave of fast times and world records? We have seen this before with the middle distance events, albeit, years ago where someone will break a world record, and then several other athletes start gunning for it. Do any of you think that the mile world record will be broken again soon? Is the 1500m now at stake? Will it motivate athletes in other distances to focus on world records? (800m, 5,000m, 10,000m)? I’m curious to see.

T&F Stats Over & Under Performers at London DL
Mark English leads the over performers from the London Diamond League after the Irishmen broke 1:43 for the first time and took a shocking second place.
In that same event, Bryce Hoppel once again disappointed with a 1:45, can he bounce back at USAs?

Laros: season over
On his Instagram, Niels Laros says his season is over because of an Achilles injury. The same injury he had after the world championship last year.
Such a shame. Is is an extreme talent, but very breakable unfortunately. I am really looking forward to a 1500 or a mile with Kerr, Meyers, Hocker, Ingebritsen, Laros and some others, all injury-free. Hope we will see it next year.

Ryan Crouser announces season-ending elbow fracture
short version: he avulsed the tip of his olecranon (the pointy part of the elbow) and has to go for surgical repair. Sounds like he was trying to manage this conservatively for awhile and has been nursing it all season.

T&F General Discussion Kerr could break the 1500m record as well !!
Josh Kerr ran a mile (1609.34m) at a pace equivalent to a 3:27.50 1500m. Only 6 men in history have ever run a 1500m at that pace and the world record is 3:26.00.
Kerr kept that pace going in a race that was 7.3% longer than a 1500m.
His 1200m time trial was run at a 3:22.50 1500m pace. Obviously, that can't be maintained over a full 1500, but it gives a clue as to how pace improves over shorter distance.
I'm in awe of what just took place. It brought me close to tears.
Who know what it will take to bring himself to a peak again for a 1500m. After so long pointing to the record breaker in London, does he need to rest and regroup or can he ride the peak a bit longer and apply it to the 1500?
Anyone know his 1500m schedule for the balance of the season ?

Pic: Josh Kerr on track for greatness
A pic of Josh Kerr I caught at the London Stadium yesterday that I'm happy with. I think this was on his final lap and he was looking so strong. The pacers had dropped out and Kerr was just tracking ahead of the white lights indicating the record attempt was well and truly on. The atmosphere when he hit the home straight was electric, and when he crossed the line it was rapturous. A privilege to be there in person to witness it.
