That cost includes design AND production of the Superfortress. So that includes the manufacturing costs of 4000 airplanes.

It's even less impressive when you get into the grit of it; How did B-29 program exceed the cost of the Manhattan project? : r/AskHistorians.

To summarize, the cost of designing and building 4000 cutting edge tech planes was maybe $3 billion, while the Manhatten project could have costed just under $2 billion. The former number includes the cost of production to 1945 which is the overwhelming bulk of the expense while the latter cost is an estimate of what it cost to design, develop and build Fat Man and Little Boy as well as a few other prototype cores and items like Gadget and the 'Demon Core' (including staff and facilities to produce the materials).

Definitely true, but building airplanes requires building factories as well.

I still feel it is a bit unfair to compare a for a handful of devices to the thousands of airplanes. Especially since the airplanes would have been built even if the A-bomb did not exist, and there would probably be even more of them.

But it wasn’t just building two bombs, it was infrastructure to build a nuclear arsenal.

Plus all the research institutions, there were whole cities built for that - Los Alamos plus enrichment sites.

Including, for example, the K-25 enrichment plant: a single factory that employed 12,000 workers and consumed more power than the city of Chicago. That was just one of the enrichment plants. I'm amazed that the B-29 program cost more than the Manhattan project.

The Manhattan Project required enriched uranium and plutonium, so they had to build the entire cities of Oak Ridge and Hanford to supply that. Once that was accomplished, that equipment could keep operating to produce several additional bombs per year. The Cold War generals went off the rails with their concept of an appropriate arsenal, so everything was greatly expanded in the 50s and 60s, but the original machinery would have produced enough bombs to destroy the entire world if they had just used a little patience.

This is one reason nuclear proliferation is treated as a binary threshold. Once a nation state has the resources to make one bomb, they have the resources to make several.

The difference is we built thousands of b29s. The entire Manhattan project of WW2 was basically about building two prototypes. They were just about to start what you might think of as full rate production on bombs with potentially a half dozen a month by the end of 1945.

"Fun" fact: my friend worked at Hanford as part of cleanup efforts. This is anecdotal obviously, but he claims some workers were hitting their annual dose limits within weeks or even days.

That is scary, the tanks at Hanford are a mess but I'm glad folks like your friend are working to make things safer. I'm consistently surprised by the lack of awareness that most Washingtonians have of the work that's happening there. Making the fissile material was the majority of the cost of the Manhattan Project.

About 60% of the budget was Oak Ridge alone, and then when you add Hanford Engineer Works (the first reactor to make plutonium) and the various special materials needed (including a lot of heavy water), you get something like 90% of the budget. Los Alamos proper was less than 5%!

Copper was in short supply due to the war effort, so the treasury loaned 14,000 tons of silver to be used a wiring for one of the uranium enrichment factories. It was a loan so it is probably not factored into the cost at all, but it highlights how many resources were going into the efforts to build the bomb- and the B-29.

Making electromagnets for calutrons, needed to separate isotopes. $600M worth of silver at the time.

I was just about to post about it, so I have the wikipedia page open. 4,841.113 kg of it was lost, and the last of it was only returned in 1970.

They even burned down the buildings where they manufactured the wire and drilled holes to recover more of the silver from the ashes.

Easier than you think tbh. Its harder now because of what we know and the methods have changed. Making the basic enrichment sites we used is easier than you think especially when its a specific project like this. You forgot how little material we produced as well for the amount of resources pushed through. Our rate of production and extraction of enriched materials is soooo much worse than what we can do now.

You can up the plane cost even further since they actually had TWO atomic-capable bomber projects going in parallel. The B-29 was the one they were hoping would succeed (it was the more advanced and capable of the two).

The goverment also funded development of the B-32 Dominator just in case the B-29 failed. That was a complete development and production program (design, tooling, facilities, etc), and they even made over 100 production aircraft, which were effectively never needed.

We kind of did have two parallel atomic bomb projects.

We developed two different families of bombs that used two different materials (highly enriched uranium vs plutonium), different enrichment and separation techniques, different methods of detonation (gun vs implosion types). Fat Man and Little Boy were very different weapon designs and really shouldn’t be considered the same weapon.

The development of both was run in parallel and as part of the same overarching project. But, yeah, for most intents and purposes there were two atomic bomb projects that both had produced working atomic weapons in time for them to each destroy one city.

Essentially yes.

The information is not untrue, but is often presented in extremely misleading ways. It's also just not all that notable, I guess? The US spent billions upon billions of dollars in WWII on a lot of things. Many of them were probably more expensive than the Manhattan Project.

The Two-Ocean Navy plan for the USN passed by Congress in 1940 was budgeted at $8.5 billion to build hundreds of warships and thousands of naval aircraft, plus facilities and personnel to operate and maintain them. Is there any real use or anything all that interesting about presenting 'the US spent more on warships and warplanes in WWII than the atomic bomb?' I don't think there is. Like it's not like the information isn't cool or interesting if you're into that sort of things but I feel like most people could probably intuit that however expensive the Manhattan Project was, it wasn't as expensive as vaguely presented stats about wartime procurement.

Well according to that comment the research and development cost of the Superfortress is still higher than the Manhattan project. However, the bulk of the cost of both projects is not R&D, but production. Most of the Manhattan project costs were for enrichment.

Technically, the Manhattan Project built 4 bombs. Trinity, the two that were dropped on Japan, and a 4th was ready for assembly when the war ended. The core for that last bomb later became the "Demon Core" which killed 2 scientists in accidents.

edit: Until the unit was disbanded in 1947 they actually built another 9 bombs.

And the Superfortress was not designed solely for carrying an atomic bomb. It was meant to be an "all-in-one" long range bomber. Travel long distances, drop heavy payloads, and defend itself from enemy fighters.

It just so happened to be a good choice to be modified to carry fat man and little boy.

It was designed and planned for before the Manhattan Project even started. Boeing started design work in 1940. It was always meant to carry conventional bombs.

In fact, when the time came to start thinking about how to deliver the bombs, it was discovered the bomb bays of the B-29 had to be adjusted to fit the bomb. The special B-29s meant for this were called Silverplate variants.

The B29s that carried the bombs were also built with fuel injectors as opposed to carburetors and we’re made super light. They probably flew like a dream with no payload compared to the conventional ones.

My grandfather worked on the modifications to the bomb bay doors and bomb holding area of the Enola Gay. They were given the specifications of what the plane had to carry and it was retrofitted.

The thing was largely designed to be able to hit the Japan home islands at long range and it certainly did that and then some.

The infamous firebombing of Tokyo was carried out by 346 of them with most of the gun emplacements removed so they could carry more.

It’s correct when you consider production. I’ve run the numbers in the past with the average cost of aircraft procured per year and the number of aircraft ordered from serial number lists and get close to $3 billion. The cost data I have excludes the prototype aircraft. In quickly rechecking some numbers, there were 1,668 B-29s authorized in 1942 with an average cost of $893,730 per aircraft: that alone is just shy of $1.5 billion (1944 is more complex as serial number splits between variants get uglier).

The problem is it’s treated as R&D funding when it’s just procurement.

It's not that the number is made up, it's that the number is often not contextualized, and presented in a misleading way. In context, it's still true, but not nearly as impressive as the misleading presentation tries to make it seem.

Lots of things cost more than the Manhattan Project in WWII. The Two-Ocean Navy program called for a 70% increase in the size of the US Navy. Passed in 1940, the costs of this program was budgeted at the time as $8.5 billion. More than the Manhattan Project and the B-29 combined. There's not particularly notable about running around and saying 'the US spent more building warships than it spent on the Atomic bomb' like it's some kind of cool factoid. I think the B-29 gets this treatment solely because a lot of people falsely assume it only existed to deliver the atomic bombs leading to the false presentation of this information as 'it took more to build the plane to deliver the bomb than it took to build the bomb.' Which is just a completely bastardized presentation of information.

The b-29 also didn’t retire from active service until 1960. The bombs were one and done but the airframe went on to have a decently long service life for a rotary engine bomber when jet engines were becoming the norm

Yeah it was in the billions. Odd seeing this post as just the other day I watched a show that talked how it's was the biggest investment on anything, ever, in humanity for the plane.

To me tho I would figure the bomb would be more. I mean the people they setup to do it, their educations, the litteral city they built to develop it, etc.

But in fairness the plane was a major milestone for humanity too. The engines were the most powerful ever, design and manufacturing, Boeing etc.

Hell they captured islands just to be able to get the planes close enough to bomb japan, sacrificing human lives..lots of them.

And they tried to do it with China and the "hump" route over the hymalayan mountains but it took so much just to get barely any supplies to the Chinese and the guy who was in charge promised a lot more than he could deliver.

He had thousands of Chinese that hand built a runway for the super heavy plane out of rocks they broke into smaller rocks all by hand with like no tractors or earth movers or the support of the army corps of engineers (who made the other runways on guam etc)

It's nuts they built the runways in China, flew the planes there finally, and then just abandoned the airbases because japan was wiping the Chinese army at that point.

They both cost a lot of money and ultimately saved a lot of lives, sadly, by taking a LOT of lives from a massive firebombing campaign followed by, of course, 2 atomic bombs

Crazy what a nation can do when United for a single cause.

Also… It’s ones of the first pressurized aircraft (mass produced) and also ones of the first uses of remote-control turrets. Both of these are included in the price tag of the airplanes and both were engineering feats quite impressive at the time.

Of the nearly 4,000 B-29's, only about 65 of them underwent the 'Silverplate' modification to enable them to drop the atomic bombs.  A number of these weren't even done until after the war had ended.

Kind of, the B-29 was so large it needed an entirely new factory, with new assembly lines, to be built just to build the plane. Moreover it’s not like the B-29 was “An existing plane but a bit bigger” it was a brand new era of strategic bomber with all the new tech. The pressurized cabin required new structural designs, new defensive armament designs, new navigation equipment. Even the flare gun for this plane had to be redesigned so they could fire flares out of the pressurized cabin.

So while’s it’s easy to say “That plane was expensive” it’s more accurate to say “It cost 3 billion dollars to develop pressurized high altitude crew stations, new alloys and structures for pressurized aircraft, remote-control parallax-corrected gyroscopic lead-computing gunsight equipped turrets, and a brand new factory to produce all of this in, within 3 years.”

In the millennium falcon the guns were entirely manual, the Superfortress' could computer lead while allowing gunners to dynamically take and release control of the guns around the plane. The computer could also calculate the trajectory to make several guns in several different points on the plane to hit the same target as seen by one person.

As an engineering project manager, I can’t even begin to imagine how to scope out a project like this, let alone getting it all to production within a couple of years, without the aid of computers. The saving grace is that budget would have been unlimited.

It kind of was in a way. A lot of US military spending in these years is hard to really account for a number of reasons. It's hard to track how the government spent money on secretive classified projects. Non-secret projects often operated out of large budget accounts where every single penny of spending was tracked sure, but not necessarily itemized by project. Many accounts, funds, and expenses were for multiple things like the above mentioned Silverplate B-29s. These variants were specifically designed to carry the atomic bombs. Do they count as part of the expense of the B-29 project, or the Manhattan project in this context?

Part of what makes the OP claim so messy is that the numbers behind it are themselves best estimates drawn from available information. The projects actual costs was almost certainly a different number we simply can't pin down.

When looking at money, it costs way more to train a pilot than the average Marine, so in a weird financial sense Iwo is worth the money. This is also the age before downed airmen retrieval made easy and ejection seats, so landing someplace is quite preferable than yeeting into freezing water.

lots of money and lots of engineers who got into engineering because of public works programs in the 30s. My grandpa worked on dams in the western US before joining boeing in the late 30s because they were basically throwing large chunks of cash at anyone who specialized in structural engineering.

The craziest part about this plane is that it was conceptualized and designed in the 1930s. 35 years after the first manned flight.

Went from a kite with a motor to this space ship of a plane in 35 years. That would be like the first plane being flown in 1991 and the B-29 being started to be worked on this year.

I was reading about the development of the B-29 while I was on a flight. The book described how people marveled at the massive size of the B-29 and doubted it could move, let alone fly.

That statement is an example of creatively rearranging data to create a novel, but inaccurate story. The cost of the B-29 program includes the actual production of the aircraft themselves - nearly four thousand of them in various different configurations and mission types. The Silverplate versions capable of delivering nuclear payloads was less than 150. Nuclear payloads were not a consideration when starting the program.

The vast majority of the ~150 carriers built during the war were escort carriers that are much less capable (Like the 50 Casablanca-class carriers that carried 27 planes, vs most fleet carriers carrying ~100). The main bulk of fleet carriers built during the war were 17 Essex-class ships as well as 9 light carriers.

But in comparison during the war Japan only built 4 fleet carriers, 6 light carriers and 4 escort carriers.

WW2 was just different. These days, the US will buy like 200 of something, and that's 180 more than anyone else can afford. And it will take 20 years to fill the contract.

In WW2 the US was like, I need 4000 new bombers in 4 years please.

You need new cargo ships? Best I can do is a new one every 16 hours or so. You have an emergency order? I can gen you up a new boat in 5 days.

You wanna bomb Cologne? All I have available is 1000 bombers. That enough?

You need a heavy machine gun? How about this thing. I call it the Ma Deuce. I can make 3 million of them for ya, and they will last oh... the next 150 years. You can put it on everything.

To be fair though, a modern combat aircraft is a lot more complex and a lot more capable. You needed absurd numbers of aircraft because back during WW2 you might send 200 bombers on one raid, lose 20% of them, and not even hit the target. Whereas one B-2 bomber with guided bombs is going to flatten almost any single target.

The company my dad worked for after 1964 designed the Liberty ship. It was designed to be built in sections and put together in the dry dock. They were essentially disposable cargo ships meant to be assembled as quickly as possible.

The B29 was truly ahead of its time. Its defensive guns used analog computers to calculate where to aim, and it was pressurised. No other bomber came close to it until the Soviets copied the design.

Mechanical (gears and machined surfaces) and tube op-amp with resistors and capacitors for solutions to simultaneous algebraic and differential equations. Analog computer design was the opposite of general purpose digital computing in that the machines were built to solve one problem. Google B29 fire control computer for pictures

Congrats on not being able to properly compare the costs, and ALSO being unable to understand the difference between R&D and production, and ALSO being unable to distinguish between initial costs and overall program costs. The B-29 program ran for eighteen years, with numerous upgrades, with almost 4,000 units built.

Not to mention that you completely failed to take into account production costs of the first atomic bombs. Look up Oakridge and Hanford, and how much money was spent to build and operate those facilities.

Because the OPERATION of those facilities was ridiculously expensive, which is not included in the comparison. Oakridge alone used something like 10% of all electricity in the entire United States while it was running.

If the manufacture of planes is included (not just the R&D), then the operating costs of the nuclear program must also be factored in.

World War II is so much more advanced than people give it credit for.

Last week there were lots of posts and articles citing "the first" use of a US suicide boat. Bullshit, that was in 1944.

The US also had suicide drones, radar guided guns, radar guided glide bombs, proximity fuse explosives, etc etc.

And I'm bringing this all up because the plane in question had networked, computer assisted aim defensive machine guns.

The technology of this war is absolutely jaw dropping relative to the time.

To be fair to Boeing, it wasn’t all their fault.

The Duplex-Cyclone engines had an awful habit of going all Heinkel He177 on them, especially during early production. This lead to Boeing spending a lot of money trying to stop them catching fire, which was really Wright’s job. They did get better, but their tendency to light up like the arse end of a Saturn V was never completely eradicated.

The remote turrets cost a fortune to develop, but they did get them working, something Germany never really managed, despite them trying to fit them on every late war two engined aircraft they had. If you look at the size of the fire control unit on a B-29, you’ll understand why.

It was the most complex aircraft ever built at the time, so yeah, it’s gonna cost you.

The other significant industrial project during WW2 was the development of synthetic rubber. 90 percent of natural rubber production was captured by Japan by early mid 1942. No tires, engine seals, gas masks etc. The Manhattan project was the star but the rubber project did all the grunt work.

The Department of War did studies and research in the interwar period and even had stockpiled plenty of natural rubber in the 1930s. By 1935 research into synthetics was progressing so quickly that they stopped making plans for it. In 1937 new synthetics were developed that could replace many natural rubber products, and by 1940 Standard Oil had obtained patent rights from I.G. Farben, plus developed their own by mid-year (along with Goodyear with a different variation) superior enough that any disruption in natural rubber from SE Asia could be managed and overcome.

Well yeah. At the risk of sounding callous, this is partly from the need to deploy any given aircraft with some degree of assurance it’d make it home in more or less one piece, with the plane and all its crew able to fly again with minimal delay. Those are costs that don’t exist in the same way for a single use item for which you’re not assuming an aftercare support liability, and where any of your OH&S obligations conclude while the item is still enroute to the intended recipients.

My grandpa worked on engineering that plane. He was on the team responsible for providing maximum visibility and keeping the pressure in. That webbed window design was his solution. He was a structural engineer.

Sadly that engineering knowledge cost him to lose out on some insane real estate investments because he said it didnt make sense to live up against the beach because of erosion. He was right, of course, however, that didn't stop people from wanting to buy land on the beach.
