It took me many many watches to understand why he got up and climbed to the edge of the boat. At first I thought maybe he was just trying to avoid the cold water, or maybe just trying to find a stable spot where he won't fall off.

But then I noticed that the rope he was holding onto wasn't the tan-colored roped that the boat was hanging from, rather the tight, powerful black ropes that held the funnel in place. He was holding onto that tight rope as an anchor to push down on the uptilted side of the boat, thereby preventing the lifeboat from fully tipping over. A few other people holding onto the uptilted side were helpful too. Otherwise, the boat was at serious risk of flipping over.

Did most people get this on the first watch? I'm kinda slow, I don't know how many times I watched this scene before finally getting it 😅

August Wennerström was a third-class passenger and survived in Boat A. Here is an article from the newspaper “Nordstjernan”, April 23, 1912:

“Some lifeboats took 80 people while others only a small number. One of them had only 15 or 16 people. Titanic was no longer under command, the pumps stood still, and the ship never did have a search light. The first officer yelled to the helmsman, "Save yourselves if you can because the disaster is unavoidable." In the same moment he put the pistol in his mouth and lay dead on his post. The boats were still being lowered and disappeared in the night.”

I was surprised to see this, because I've looked at many reports of suicide on the Titanic, but I've never seen it mentioned. Wennerström's words imply that the suicide occurred long before the ship sank, but perhaps the reporters got something mixed up or simply made it up, following the lead of other newspapers. In any case, Wennerström was rescued on Collapsible A, meaning he had a good opportunity to become a witness, so his name should be mentioned along with the names of the other witnesses who were rescued on Collapsible A/B:

Eugene Daly: “At the first cabin (deck) when a boat was being lowered an officer pointed a revolver and said if any man tried to get in, he would shoot him on the spot. I saw the officer shoot two men dead because they tried to get in the boat. Afterwards there was another shot, and I saw the officer himself lying on the deck. They told me he shot himself, but I did not see him.” (Personal letter to his sister)

“There was a terrible crowd standing about. The officer in charge pointed a revolver and waved his hand and said that if any man tried to get in he would shoot him on the spot. Two men tried to break through and he shot them both. I saw him shoot them. I saw them lying there after they were shot. One seemed to be dead. The other was trying to pull himself up at the side of the deck, but he could not. I tried to get to the boat also, but was afraid I would be shot and stayed back. Afterwards there was another shot and I saw the officer himself lying on the deck. They told me he shot himself, but I did not see him.“ (“Daily Sketch”, May 4, 1912)

“Daly would later repeat this story in the May 4, 1912 issues of The London Daily Telegraph and The Daily Sketch. A very similar account was told to Mayor Gaynor of New York, and was printed in the April 22, 1912 edition of the Washington Post. Daly’s letter to his sister contains details not mentioned in his April 15th account - namely, the officer shooting two men dead, before shooting himself. Daly also testified under oath about the shooting/suicide in the 1915 limitation hearings. He was the only individual to mention this at these hearings.” (Bill Wormstedt, “Shots in the Dark”)

Edward Dorkings: “I saw an officer, it may have been the captain or it may not, shoot himself before I got away from the ship." (“The New York Herald”, April 19, 1912)

Peter Daly: “Daly did not actually witness the suicide, but did hear ‘several shots’ near the end. In an interview conducted after the disaster, Daly claimed to have been told that an officer had killed himself, and this was while he was still on board the Titanic.” (Bill Wormstedt, “Shots in the Dark”)

Carl Jansson: "I glanced toward the bridge and saw the chief officer place a revolver in his mouth and shoot himself. His body toppled overboard.” (Personal letter)

"the First Officer put a gun in his mouth and shot himself." (Personal letter, May 8, 1912)

Janson saw Chief Officer Murdock shoot himself just before the last boat was launched. “Shortly before the last boat was launched I glanced toward the bridge and saw the chief officer place a revolver in his mouth and shoot himself.” (“Chicago American”, April 25, 1912)

Oscar Olsson: “We saw the water come up and up until it almost reached him [Murdoch]. Then we heard a pistol shot. Many people thought he had shot himself.” (“Nearer My God To Thee; The Story of the Titanic”)

“Olsson appears to have escaped in either Collapsible A or B. Olsson spoke of a suicide on many different occasions, in a private letter, several press accounts, and in a 1912 memorial book”. (Bill Wormstedt, “Shots in the Dark”)

George Rheims: “As the last lifeboat was leaving I saw an officer kill a man with one gun shot.  The man was trying to climb aboard that last lifeboat.  Since there was nothing left to do, the officer told us, “Gentlemen, each man for himself, goodbye.”  He gave us a military salute and shot himself.  This was a man!!” (Personal letter, April 19, 1912)

“One officer shot a man who attempted to get into a crowded boat. Immediately afterward the officer said:- "Well, goodby," and killed himself." (“New York Herald”, April 20, 1912)

Victor Sunderland: “I saw an officer fire his revolver once or twice, killing a man”. Sunderland then claimed he started heading towards the stern of the ship and heard another shot. “I asked what had happened, and a gentlemen told me that an officer had shot himself. Seeing that I could not secure a spot in a lifeboat, I leapt from the ship and into the water just a few feet below.” (“The Daily Sketch”, May, 1912)

I would also add Augustus Weikman, who described only the man who was shot: "First Officer Murdock shot a foreigner who tried to climb over the rail into a boat.” (“Burlington New Jersey Daily Enterprise”, April 20, 1912)

It is often said that Titanic was the death knell of the old way of living, that something changed overnight. That the sinking pointed a mirror at the injustices of society and so on and so on. But I would argue differently. I would argue that the disaster served to actually reinforce the traditional views of western society at the time.

Just take a look at these excerpts from the famous cash grab book "The sinking of the titanic and great sea disasters" that came out in may 1912. It has it all. Xenophobia, racism, misogyny take your pick. All very normal back then.

And really all the early mythology about the sinking, some of which still persists to this day fit the prevailing views of morality, gender roles and society in general:

The noble, honorable, rational, anglo-saxon edwarian gentleman saves the irrational, emotional, hysterical woman, then steps back, changes to evening gear and stares death calmly and bravely in the face. Meanwhile the stoker, the immigrant, the foreigner, they only think about saving themselves by any means necessary.

Now we all know reality was very messy. Look at what happened to Ismay because he didn't follow the guidebook. He was in disgrace his whole life because of that. What i would argue changed all was of course The Great War. Many expected it to be a gentlemanly war like in the 19th century but it turned very messy very quickly and the old way of living had to go. Then we get to Lusitania just a few years later and the story is different. There was literally no time for chivalry.

Anyway, that's my view on the issue. What do you guys think?

I don't think I ever found out before this but how much money did it cost to build The Titanic from scratch?

How much money would it take to feed the entire crew and passengers? How much money did it cost to operate the ship on its voyage? How much money did the crew captain included make as salary? How much money did the company lose after the ship sank and so many people were killed with negative media publicly and lawsuits?

Sven and his friend wanted to sail on The Titanic but lost the game of poker to Jack, would he have freaked out and been filled with grief after hearing about it in the newspapers that The Titanic had hit an iceberg and sunk with most of the passengers being killed at sea?

Must have been relieved to learn that he wasn't onboard and lucked out despite Jack embarrassing him in front of his friend and getting punched in the face, might have made him never try to sail again in the future either.

so, to sum up and explain myself since i only shared this personal project of mine one other time on the sub two years ago: i wanted to build my own submersible and breaking model of Titanic for years, and i succeeded with a different, simpler model. since then, i wanted to make a new one that was as accurate as i could get it to the newer theories from the last decade.

in the first ever post of this ship, i showcased my collapsing midsection on my model. however, since then, ive struggled to make a splitting mechanisms that worked with that part of the model, and it demotivated me for over a year and a half. what i recorded here was just a bit ago and im happy to say (for myself at least) that i finally got the break up to actually happen, rather than split immediately or not at all. i hope that i’ll be able to share more on this project before i leave for school in less than a month.

When the steward comes in to order them up to the boat deck and Cal tries to tell him they are busy, I just realized that it saved Rose. She was cruisin' for a bruisin'.

Took a trip out on the SS Shieldhall at the weekend, featuring a pair of working triple-expansion steam engines. Sailed down the Solent and back, past cruise ships and where Titanic first departed Southampton. We could explore the bridge, steering gear, fo'c'sle, but the engine room was the real highlight! A more modern vessel but regardless worth the trip if you’re a Titanic fan for the similarities alone.

A book from my collection. It’s pretty fragile. I’ve never read it. Is anyone familiar with its contents?

In alternate reality, right after Cal says "You will never behave like that again Rose, do you understand?". Something inside Rose snaps and she flips the table yelling "I am not a foreman in one of your mills that you can command! I am your fiancée!".

What would Cal's actual reaction be if Rose did this? Also, she's prepared to actually fight back if it comes down to it.

I've made posts lately regarding Cal bumping and almost bumping into people, and Jack bumping into two stewards. So...on this topic, I'm imagining what the characters' reactions would be if I bumped into them 😄

Rose: I don't think Rose would mind much if I bumped into her. If I was a guy, Cal would be furious at me, but I'm a woman, so he probably wouldn't mind too much as long as Rose isn't hurt. Jack and Ruth probably wouldn't mind too much either as long as Rose is ok.

Jack: Jack probably wouldn't mind too much either. Rose won't get jealous over some random woman bumping into Jack.

Cal: He would try to dodge me 😟, if that failed he would be a bit annoyed at some random stranger bumping into him, but no biggie🤭. Ruth might get a little suspicious of some woman bumping into her daughter's fiancé. Rose wouldn't care. Lovejoy would be looking to make sure I didn't steal Cal's wallet or something.

Lovejoy: I think he would successfully dodge me.

Ruth: She would be slightly upset at some unruly peasant bumping into her.

Molly: She would probably laugh and then ask if I was ok.

Mr. Andrew: He would gently ask if I was ok.

Most of the first class men and the crew: Just whatever the standard gentleman response of that time period is supposed to be (I'm not sure what).

Sir. Cosmo: Considering the somewhat creepy way he was staring Rose, this situation might get a little uncomfortable for me if I was a beautiful woman. But I'm just average, so it'll be fine.

Stewards and most maids and valets: Same way the stewards reacted to Jack bumping into them.

Most third class passengers: Some may laugh, some may ask if I was ok, I don't think anyone would get mad unless I hurt someone or broke something.
