Skatey board recs for 6’4 230lbs

Hey everyone - so I took a bit of a hiatus from surfing, focused on a new dog and bodybuilding for a couple of years but have been getting back into it recently. My local break (like across the street) is the breakwater in Venice.

Grew up surfing half moon bay/pacifica. Here’s my current quiver:

6’4 41.6L traditional shortboard: surfed this one the most but I feel like it’s a little tight especially compared to my other shortboard and although it has some speed i just feel like something is missing, thruster set up too

6’0” x 20 x 2 3/4 (not sure about volume but this one feels like a potato chip) this on a random surf trip to Costa Rica a few years ago, way too low volume for me but I find it SO fun when the waves have a bit of power so I can get into them… it feels way skatier and snappy, but I also will literally just stop moving on the wave sometimes once it loses momentum despite my best efforts to pump

6’6” vernor double barrel shotgun … again not sure on volume, dims say: 6’6, 3, 15 1/4, 21 3/4, 17 3/4

I also owned the lost mayhem rnf 5’11” foam board but remember hating it…

I really like the 6’ because of the skatey feel and tight control I have, but I’m not sure if I should just find a board with similar length but more volume? Or what… I mainly want one for pitchy beach breaks … I default to the 6’6” for anything else since it’s usually a good time, honestly loved it in SF but I feel like SF waves have more meat to them almost? Like slower, larger … easier for me to catch than here but maybe it’s just my time away. My fav spot in the bay was rockaway or Kelly cove.

No idea if this gives enough info but curious if anyone has any recs. My height is 6’4 and weight fluctuates between 220-245 (winter vs summer lmao)

Birdwell Britches: classic SurfNyl, or SurfStretch? Are either even worth the price?

I lifeguard, and the short version is that I go through boardshorts pretty frequently. Whether it's the material itself, the string, or the color-way fading... you get the idea. I've never owned a pair of Birdwells, but I know how people swear by them. So, does anyone here have tips on if the classic fit is better than their stretch shorts? Which has lasted the longest overall? Has the quality gone down since private equity stepped in? Thanks for any input. Stay safe.

TRANSCENDING WAVES | Falkland Islands Surf Documentary | Cultural Bridge...

Most people know the Falklands/Malvinas as a flashpoint, a war, a sovereignty dispute, a talking point that resurfaces every time Argentina and England share a headline (like right now with the World Cup).

What most people don't know is that there's a small surf scene out there, and in 2018 two Argentine surf-filmmaker brothers (Joaquín and Julián Azulay, aka Gauchos del Mar) went to find it.

The result is Transcending Waves - they track down two local Falkland Islander brothers, also surfers, also born after the '82 war, and just... go surf together. It's not a political film, but it can't help being one as the tension is right there under the surface the whole time.

Given everything going on right now between the two countries, it felt like a good moment to bring this one up. Enjoy!

Hey just curious, juat at a snapshot which board people thinks looks better?

One has more foam than the other One of them feels like it takes way too much effort to release the tail

And one probably needs different fins

Not the best surfing in these clips but trying to decide between which one to bail on and which one to keep

Im already leaning towards one of them

How to keep surfing into my 40s as a blue collar worker

I'm a carpenter and I'm lucky enough to have the flexibility to surf before work if I want. I'm currently 32 and probably do this about twice a week but I find on the days I surf for the rest of the day I'm just super tired and can't really be as productive as I should be. I eat well and get okay sleep but I'm worried as I get older it'll just get too hard to do this. Do any other blue collar surfers have any advice?

Just got a new board. Put my fins in, and took them out. I noticed this hairline ‘crack’ inside the finbox. (Corner) or it could be the paint from the fins too (see pic 3 sides of finbox theres paint as well) i tried wiping it down but none of the ‘crack’ or side paint wipes off. What can i do incase?

Can this be repaired? Airline snapped my board

Hey everyone,

My board got smashed during a flight and now it looks like this. Is there any hope of repairing it, or is it done for?

The bottom of the board looks completely fine, but based on these photos, do you think it's snapped internally? I'm comfortable doing the repair myself if it's fixable, but I'm wondering if anyone has dealt with similar damage before and how it turned out.

Thanks!

Had a great day here with a longboard one day great long cruiser waves.

Have been out on other days here when the conditions are said to be good online but it was really poor and no surfers out.

In what conditions is this break working best ?

Any other recommendations for longboard waves in Victoria?

Quiver rebuild suggestions? Bay Area

I’m a late comer to the sport and skills continuing to progress. Based in Bay Area. 5’11 / 175. Surf OB, HMB, LM, SC etc

Current boards:
Pyzel white tiger - 5’7 / 31.7L
Lost little wing -6’0 / 32L
Pyzel shadow - 6’1 / 30.7L

Thinking of selling the white tiger and/or little wing. Have been using both for past year+. Have cycled through some fishy boards as well.
Would love a performance fish for smaller days and a DD HPSB. Looking at sub driver or JS monsta / similar for DD. Maybe shadow could even fill that purpose? Idk latest small wave models - open to all ideas

Fish sizing

Recently ive been riding my buddy's classic 5 11 fish. Yesterday took it out in double overhead surf, and I was a bit undergunned. Thing is, I dig the fishy magic of the board. I'm 6' 200 lbs, been surfing for 15 years, and I'm honestly aging into midlengths. Anyway, my question is, what size does a fish starts to lose its qualities that make it so fishy? how big of a fish can I go without the board starting to lose that skatiness? Looseness, and speed are the qualities that define it for me I suppose

Would stickers make me a kook?

Buying some new boards now that I've progressed a bit, and I'm a big John John Florence fan. A friend gave me some stickers for the new boards, and I'd like to throw them on, but I don't want to look like a kook trying to look sponsored. The stickers are:

  • Florence Marine X
  • REEF (did a beach cleanup with them a while back, good times)
  • Vela (love their leashes and traction)
  • The surf shop I work at

For context, I'm not sponsored by any of them. I just genuinely like the brands and have some connection to them. Would this come across as normal, or would it look like I'm trying too hard?

How are Old Man's and Tongg's During Bigger Swells?

Question in title. Probably gonna paddle out there this afternoon and find out myself, but curious to hear other people's thoughts.

For context, I've been surfing at diamond head a lot since moving to the island earlier this year, as it's a reasonable drive from where I live. I've surfed out there when it's 5-8 feet, and it was a little scary but I managed to drop in on a few.

I've been curious about Tongg's and Old Man's because, based on the map, they look like they'd handle trade winds a bit better than DH does. On a bigger day, what is the character of the waves? Similar to Cliffs? Mellower? Scarier?

Coached a surf camp for the first time yesterday...

Yesterday I had the joy of helping a bunch of kids surf for the first time.

What an eye opening experience that was. We may as well have just handed these kids a bunch of vapes. Getting the first 2-3 waves as a kid must be absolute dopamine overload.

We had them in the water for a few hours and they were running themselves ragged dragging their boards back/getting pummeled just trying to get to the outside for just One. More. Hit.

It's like we created a bunch of little addicts.
