25 and new to area - where do people my age go out in the area?

Title. Don’t see a lot of great night life spots but may just be looking in the wrong places. Don’t see a lot of people my age around, mostly older folk. What spots are nearby? Or does everyone just go to East Village lol

Real estate agent recommendations?

Hi friends! My husband and I are beginning the processes of looking for an apartment to buy in Sunset Park and are looking for real experience recommendations for real estate agents who work in the area. Anybody have a super great experience? Any bad ones to avoid? Ideally looking for someone who's a go-getter and not afraid to push. Thanks!

62nd street development progress

Stopped by the construction site at 62nd street yesterday and climbed the wall to get a closer look, and I’m stunned by the scale of this project, it takes up the entire block and feels like a massive city-center ziggurat.

It’s impressive that they’re nearly topped out after less than a year, especially when compared to the 5005 5th Avenue site, which has been stalled for years and will be stalled even more due to the Salvation Army damage recently. It’s baffling that such a high-traffic, prime location has sat undeveloped for over a decade and will be delayed for even longer. Sunset Park development really defies logic sometimes; there's so much shady activity surrounding these projects.

Maybe they can fit a movie theater in that 62nd street development.

Jersey Swap?

Hello! I just got my NYC Football jersey. It’s a yellow variant, size XL and unfortunately fits a little tight right now. Long shot but wondering if anyone wants to exchange it for the same variant but maybe a 2XL or 3XL? I like loose fits.

Not adding it to the sale post as it’s not for sale item. This is just a swap, I’m not looking to buy or sell anything. Only a trade.

Cat for Adoption (Repost)

Hi all — I’m hoping this community can help me find a forever home for a stray cat I rescued about a month ago.

My original plan was to adopt her, but despite several weeks of careful introductions, she and my resident cat haven’t been able to coexist peacefully. At this point, I think she’d do best as the only cat in the home.

She’s an incredibly sweet and affectionate cat who loves people, attention, cuddles, and being brushed. She uses the litter box consistently, eats well, plays regularly, and has adjusted very well to indoor life.

About her:
• Female
• Approximately 6–8 years old
• Spayed
• No microchip found
• Full vet exam completed (x/ray, bloodwork, and stool testing normal)
• Medical records available upon request

I’ve asked friends, family, coworkers, and neighbors without success, so I’m hoping Reddit can help find the right person for her.

If you’re interested or know someone who might be, please send me a DM.

Video of her enjoying a brushing session (one of her favorite things):

What is up with 51st Street btwn 5th and 6th? That block is insane.

Ive worked at PS94 for years and have been on the neighborhood since 2000. The block has gotten progressively worse post COVID and really bad since last summer. There is A homeless encampment near the corner on 5th ave underneath the scaffolding. The sidewalk is full of ebikes and other scraps with a for sale sign. I saw a guy dumping a bucket of piss down the drain this morning. That corner reeks of shit and piss and BO. Last week there was a guy passed out in the middle of the sidewalk at 8am. Parents dropping off their kids at the school had to cross the street to avoid it. Have also seen people sell what I presume to be drugs in open daylight. “NM” Ninos Malos graffiti on homes and lightpoles. Ive witnessed all this just walking up the block in the morning and walking down the block at 5pm. I know this is a general post COVID NYC trend but this block is definitely an outlier in the neighborhood. Also had a shooting up the block last month, this is getting to 1980s quality of life level. I love this neighborhood and want to make it better and I am here for your thoughts and discussion. Countless calls to our reps, NYPD, and 311 have been ineffective. Have also seen a group of guys that monopolize street parking by purposely moving 5-6 cars leaving gaps in between them to hold spots. Someone confronted them and got threatened.

Posting this from my nephews account because I do not have reddit but had anyone else seen this on this block of other areas?

需要从洛杉矶搬到纽约的建议

Thumbnail

Hi everyone,
I’m 18 years old and would really appreciate some honest advice.
When I was 15, I moved from China to Toronto by myself and spent two years there for high school. At 17, I moved to Los Angeles alone to finish my senior year, and I just graduated.
I have legal status in the U.S., and my original plan was to stay in California and attend Mt. San Antonio College (Mt. SAC), then transfer to a four-year university to study International Relations.
The problem is that I won’t qualify for California resident tuition until about another month from now. If I started school this fall, I’d have to pay nonresident tuition, which is significantly more expensive. Because of that, I had already planned to take a gap year, work full-time, save money, and start college once I qualified for in-state tuition.
However, over the past year, I’ve realized that I really haven’t enjoyed living in Los Angeles.
I spent two years in Toronto before moving here, and I discovered that I strongly prefer cities with four seasons, good public transportation, and neighborhoods where you can actually walk places. I never really felt at home in LA.
My mom bought me a car, but because of licensing issues I barely drove it, and the insurance is incredibly expensive. Most of the time I just relied on friends for rides. Overall, LA just hasn’t felt like the right city for me.
Recently I’ve been thinking:
Since I was already planning to take a gap year anyway, would it make more sense to move to New York now instead?
My idea is to spend a year there working, getting familiar with the city, and then apply to a CUNY community college like BMCC. If I end up loving New York, I could continue there and later transfer to a four-year university.
I know New York isn’t cheap either, but I also wouldn’t be paying New York resident tuition during my first year regardless, so financially it doesn’t change much.
Has anyone lived in both Los Angeles and New York?
Or attended a California community college and later a CUNY community college?
I’d really appreciate any honest advice about the lifestyle, job opportunities, transportation, or whether this sounds like a reasonable plan.
Thanks!

Wall Collapse at 5005 5th Avenue salvation army

https://www.brooklynpaper.com/wall-collapse-sunset-park-demolition-project/

Apparently, demolition hit the wall of Salvation army and left a huge hole. Probably on purpose because Salvation Army wants to sell that property. Now they have reason to. This whole area has been under "construction" for like 4 years already. Slow as molasses. I took the pic above like a month ago.

It seems like they are dragging their feet trying to get the properties next to them. I think the other problem is that the properties next to them like the salvation army and the neighboring marketa are also in horrible condition so the more they excavate and demolish the more they mess up those buildings.

5005 was closed in 2013 and they had a huge sign that said "La Habana Market coming soon" but it never went anywhere. That area was boarded up for 8 years until they finally started construction in 2022 when they were able to acquire the building next to it the "party fair" building. Even more confusing is the abandoned Capital One building on the corner, which has been left untouched despite the surrounding chaos. At this rate, it feels like we’re at least five years away from seeing this project finished. Has anyone else noticed the lack of progress or the condition of these adjacent properties?

Who wants to barter? Seeking cleaning help in exchange for…

Hi everyone,

Does anyone in the neighborhood want to barter? I’m unemployed after a corporate layoff a year ago and know a lot of other people are struggling financially, so am looking to see if there’s any interest in exchanging goods and services without money.

Specifically, I have a pretty bad back injury right now and could really use a 3-4 hour deep clean of my apartment (mostly kitchen and bathroom) since I’m unable to do it myself. The services/goods I’m able to exchange include child care, meal prep/cooking (I am a great home cook and even do paid meal prep services to give an idea of skill level), painting (I can paint something of your choosing or teach you! I teach oil painting classes), cat sitting, writing services, resume or job help, tutoring for kids, and more. I also have a decent amount of women’s clothing and accessories that I’d be willing to trade (most size Large-XLish and women’s shoe size 7.5-8). I have a Masters in Public Policy so if you’re a grad student and want a real life human to write your paper instead of ChatGPT, I’ll do it (and better, too) in exchange for clean floor boards. If there’s any other type of task you’ve been putting off, I’ll do yours if you do mine!

I am extremely open to any combination of the above, or something else entirely as long as it’s in my wheelhouse.

If anyone is interested in this kinda thing, comment or DM me!

420 friendly buddies?

Hey everyone, I'm 24m and moved to Sunset Park recently.

I'm really passionate about my work (tech), working out, and casual gaming. I used to be big on making beats/edm. Not into bars or party scenes with loud music.

I enjoy smoking weed, walking around new areas, new disepensaries, etc. I'm a big introvert but since moving here, I'm spontaeneous and ready to go out!

Maybe today isn't the best day to go out considering the air index, but I'm free this weekend! Who's down to rip some carts and do whatever?

Curb cut scam?

Thumbnail gallery
48 Upvotes

Has anyone else noticed the recent construction on curb cuts throughout Sunset Park? I've been seeing crews tear up perfectly functional sidewalks that were installed less than three years ago, only to replace them with what appear to be identical designs. It’s frustrating to see resources spent on areas that were in good condition while other sidewalks in the neighborhood remain in poor shape. Does anyone know if there’s a specific project or initiative behind this, or does it seem like a questionable use of capital funding to you all? Shady. Might be a contractor scam like they did when they constructed PS 896.

Conversation with Evangelicals in the park

I had a long conversation with some evangelicals from North Carolina in the park.

What I got from it

They all voted for Trump but said they don't care about politics.

When asked about ICE terrorizing our neighbors, they deflected and said they basically only care about people's souls.

When asked about birthright citizenship that said that people should follow authority.

They also told me they hated Obama and thought he wasn't a Christian.

I did try to explain the hypocrisy and ingenuousness of them coming to Sunset Park to help people. But they tried to make themselves look like I was attacking them.

I think they'll be in the park all day. They have a bunch of teenagers with them.

Please ask them about these things. Maybe the teens will get a little sense from your conversation.
