I just "panic migrated" a small server and I am using Disco-Reaper to migrate messages. So far, all is fine and running well. But, I would like to use a desktop client instead.
The official one currently does not offer picking the target instance, let alone using multiple. There is a PR on the for-web repo about this.
That said, what are you currently using to connect to a selfhosted instance, outside of a browser?
Thanks!

Hello everyone!
I started looking into bridging Discord to other platforms in February when the age verification announcement was made, but I haven’t heard many updates since the changes were delayed to the second half of 2026. Now that we’re here, I’m still at a loss for good ways to connect messaging platforms!
The best method I have found was the Bolt bot with Stoat, where the bot seems pretty regularly maintained and Stoat has similar features to Discord. However, there was a 40 minute delay in sending a message the last time I tried it.
I have also successfully connected to Matrix using a bot, but there was also a delay because the public servers were overloaded at the time. Matrix also lacks many of the features that I love on Discord!
I’ve been wondering if hosting a bot myself would help with these delays, but I’m afraid I wouldn’t be able to maintain it since I’m frankly pretty technologically illiterate. I would also be interested in self-hosting Stoat, but I’m not sure where an absolute beginner would start with that. Does anyone know where I might find some guidance on any of this?
Any advice is greatly appreciated!!

I run my own StoatChat server on my homelab, mainly for my kids and there friends, but me and my buddies have started using it as our main Comms for gaming now and it's sometimes really tricky not having an app. Anyone playing on console finds it hard to join. Any news on getting a usable app. For home server use anytime soon?

The title says everything: when I open the app it seems good for about a minute before the app gets stuck in a loop saying that it is reconnecting and connected; every time it reconnects, chat refreshes as well. I am also not able to use VC.
I looked at the status page and while it did specify that maintenance was happening today, it also said that it concluded at around 6 ET this morning.
My friend who got me into this app a few days ago mentioned something about firewall but I haven't been able to find anything relating to that. For context, I am running W11.
Not sure where to start troubleshooting, any help is appreciated!

But wait, there's more. That's right:
1. Anti-spam measures are available (configurable via the dashboard).
2. You can now purge messages when banning.
3. AutoMod will now show your chosen server prefix in all commands, to avoid confusion.
4. The bot is leagues more stable and performant.
5. The /stats command is improved
6. Reaction roles have had many bugs fixed.
7. Much nicer logs if self-hosting.

Looking for some potential Discord replacements, I've ended up wanting to try out Stoat, and to my surprise I've already encountered issues as early as during account registration. It would seem to me that Stoat is filtering emails by whitelisting certain domains and rejecting the rest by default.
I use emails associated with my own custom domains (depending on purpose of the account) and none of it worked, which is actually the first time I would ever have this sort of issue, despite using my emails this way for years. Needless to say, none of it was ever used for any kind of spamming activity. This effectively turns the entire registration process from quick sing up into registration through sending an email and waiting for hopefully positive response.
Moreover, if my suspicion about whitelists is correct, it potentially could also mean that there's a lot of people who would bounce off the service at registration level, if they happen to use some lesser known or more local email providers.
I understand the idea behind it, but I think it's a horrible approach that just makes some people bounce off the service at the very first step, quietly and leaving no trace, just moving on without a word.

Hi folks,
I'm new to Stoat. I'm a non-existent content creator and one day, One of my buddies showed me it, and one of the very first few questions I had was "Why is there no easy way to switch between Local and Live?" After doing some research, and finding out it's been requested since forever, I went over to my favorite LLM and asked it for some assistance. After reading over the code for the bulk work and making some adjustments, I was quite happy with it .
So now TLDR you can switch between Live and Local, as well as EASILY adding different domains. I'd like to go further down this rabbit hole on a different branch and see to integrating local+ live seamlessly amongst other things...
Anyways, here's the branch!

Commit with the changes:
https://github.com/MatthewNapierTV/for-desktop/commit/be42eb2b34d38b848b1ae361fcc17d0834b0dc47
(note that auto update is turned off in this branch as to not override the changes, obviously :))
Update #2
Decided to jump straight into it and just knock it out today. This is the seamless integration, that is extremely modular.

I'm trying to self host this for a small friends group and I've encountered some questions that I can't find answers to despite searching.
Is the linux desktop client configurable or will it only login to official stoat servers? I don't see an option to add my self hosted server url. Is this the same for the windows desktop client, what about android clients on the play store?
I set the server to "invite only" in the toml however I cannot figure out how to set an invite code for people to use?
Is there an admin panel for the server itself or is that all config editing?
Is there a variable I can set to lock users from creating new "stoat servers" on my VPS and just limit them to the single server I made?
Is this subreddit a good place to ask questions about self hosting or should I find the offical stoat server and go there?

Notably, this update introduces a mobile UI for the web app!

I am looking to make a move from Discord soon, and Stoat is on my list to hop onto. I am down to self-host for more privacy and more control, but what I don't want to do is pay a subscription for some features I would like. As of right now, it seems Stoat does NOT have a paid tier, but I have read some posts stating that Stoat may in the future, WITHOUT taking away current features. Although some of those extra features I may want, such as larger file sending and higher quality streams. My question is, if anyone knows the answer, if I were to self-host a server, would I be able to forgo paying such a subscription, and if I can't, could I pay a one-time upgrade price?

Hi y'all, I'm trying to self-host Stoat. I have followed all the directions on the GitHub repository and have the domain secured. The SSL certificate is installed. The config files exist. The DocumentRoot in the config files is set to the default of /var/www/html.
The only problem I'm having is that when I navigate via web browser to my domain name where I'm supposed to be self-hosting Stoat, I get an index page in var/www/html/ instead. I have no idea how to get it to point to my self-hosted instance. When I type in <my-domain.com> in my browser, I get the aforementioned index page.
Does anybody have any ideas? I'm happy to provide supporting information, but I'm no programmer and I don't know what you need to know, exactly. I'm using Hostinger.
Thanks in advance y'all. I'm so tired lol

16 character randomly generated with mixed case, numbers, and symbols... I SEVERELY doubt 4 in a row were all in security leaks.

been getting some bots joining my server and then spamming csam adverts in every single channel. is there some bots out there with a honeypot/verification feature ?
not looking for multi-purpose bots, they're horrid, aids and cancer of all stages. but they do work, too
