i found a kitten about a week or so ago, it didn’t look that bad at first it looked like something that would be healable at home but it wouldn’t recover from outdoors so i took it in. it had fly strike, so i flushed the wound with diluted betadine and carefully plucked out all of the maggots. then, after the hole closed over i learned he has tapworm so i gave him dewormer for that. now, he has slowly declined very badly to the point he won’t even stand on his own so i called the shelter and the lady their was pretty rude and said it’s my families cat and responsibility now basically insinuating i should’ve left it outside to get toxic shock from the maggots and die. i don’t have money to surrender it right now, and i don’t know what to do because i certaintly don’t have money to get it to the vet in due time before it dies either. i understand working at the shelter is a high stress job, but that doesn’t give you the right to be so damn rude ALL the time. this woman has been mean to me every single time i stop by, because im pretty active with stray cats partnered with my grandmother and enjoy helping them out getting them vaccines and doing what i can while not causing my whole family to be bankrupt, but any time i ask them for help if a situation gets to be to much they’ve refused. i brought in a kitten that had been abandoned at a few days old, they said i could either foster or have him euthanized so i chose to foster and not enroll in school until i was done with that (i was 15 at the time, enrolled 2ish months later then i was supposed to becuase of my mental health declining so bad after he died.) then the kitten got very bad diharhea and needed fluids i tried asking for vet care and she refused, so we had to wait until angels opened i kept him alive until 1 am the same day he was supposed to be going to the vet and he passed. i lost myself completely after he died, he was the most important part of my life and what made me happy to wake up every day. i got guilted into taking him and i thought since fostering is them covering vet bills, i would be able to do it but they did it in a way that they wouldn’t have to pay for anything and he died. i need help with the kitten i have right now, its 10 weeks old bt im also wondering if anybody else has had bad experiences like this with anyone that works there? im a huge animal lover, i rescue betta fish regularly on my own time and dime aswell so i get the stress of finding homes being full/overcrowded and caring for their medical needs if anything i understand way more because fish are way harder to rehome then cats but i still dont treat people like this, i dont know what her problem is and i cant help but be filled with rage knowing this isn’t just a one time incident because its happened multiple times. i still want to help the stray cats, i love doing it and it makes me happy but its so hard when people like this who are supposed to be helping just wont. im 16 and now homeschooled, so i have the time for it and avalibility and majority of the time i will do most of this by myself without asking them for help unless i absolutely have to, though every single time ive asked ive been turned away. i mean, ive done most of the hard parts myself most people would’ve just dropped it off and let them deal with it. the only help ive ever asked the shelter for was financial/vet care, ive always cared for the cats found homes etc myself with the help of my grandmother.

I'm disabled and can't afford power anymore. Yes, I'm using the programs available to help people like me and yes, these programs aren't cutting it this year.

I called the office of Sam Graves to see what they're doing about it, apparently I am the one and only person who has called to ask. No one else.

How's your power bill, Saint Joseph friends? Is it too high? Is it double of last year? We have representation, please call Sam Graves (or your rep) and talk to him about it, because I did, and his office thinks this is normal fine and wonderful, they don't think their constituents are struggling at all. They will continue to think this way unless you get on your phone and complain. Call, email, send letters, make this heard.

Private companies should have no place in public utilities. And I'm tired of us paying for data and corporate welfare, and leaving disabled Americans to suffer. If we don't let our reps know that we need them they won't do anything about it. Call your rep today!

I have heard that the City may be considering a data center to be built on the east side of St. Joseph near Highway 36. 

If data center is, indeed, being considered for our area, please file this as my official objection to a data center.

First of all, I object to local consideration of a data center without sufficient (or any) public notice or opportunity for the public to respond. Only today did I see that the City expects public input by TOMORROW for discussion we citizens have not been informed about in any way.

Here are some of my questions, concerns, and objections:

LAND: Exactly what land is being considered for a data center? Is it zoned correctly? Who owns it? Is it already in the hands of a data center company? Have the citizens who will be close neighbors been adequately communicated with? How visible might the data center be from the highway as the first glimpse people traveling from east to west will see of our city?

WATER: Where are the massive amounts of water for a data center cooling needs expected to come from? How much water might be needed? As I understand, even a midsized data center consumes as much water as a small town, while larger ones require up to 5 million gallons of water every day, which is as much as a city of 50,0000 people. What controls are in place to prevent water used by a data center returning to ground supplies uncontaminated?

ENERGY: Where might the energy for the data center come from? As I understand, one data center has the potential of needing as much power as a city all by itself? How much power might the data center being considered need? Will large transmission lines be required? Or will gas pipelines be needed? What eminent domain takeover of land for needed lines might be expected where? Have people in surrounding communities who will have to share the burden of potential land infringement and increased energy costs been informed and/or consulted with?

MONEY: Is the City investing any money in the project? What return is being hoped for? As I understand, initial labor is typically needed to build a data center, but the economic employment benefits for a community are usually short term. How many people might the proposed data center be expecting to employ?

HEALTH: Has the City researched the health consequences for people who live close to data centers? I have read that nitrogen oxide emits from train-car-sized backup generators that can run regularly for up to 50 hours at a time, potentially causing lung and heart diseases for people in the area who breathe air from their own homes and outdoor spaces.

CLIMATE: What climate safety standards are in place here for such a facility? Does the federal government, Missouri, or the City have standards for a data center to follow designed to protect our earth, water, and atmosphere for future generations? Or will the data center be able to do as they wish and hide related practices and climate impact from us by some sort of legal agreements they might make to operate here?

All of my above concerns are for all people in St. Joseph and the surrounding areas who live here today and for generations to come.

In addition to the already noted concerns, I live within a mile of where I hear the data center is being considered. As a close neighbor, I am also highly concerned about sound pollution and my own property values. The light industry the City has already allowed to be built close to me negatively impact my daily living. I work from home and already have to use earplugs on some days to prevent my ears from hurting from loud whirring hum coming from the industry. Our air is filled with unpleasant odors entirely too often, containing who knows what contaminants doing who knows what to my health. I believe a data center has the potential to be an even worse neighbor. What enforcements might there be from the City to ensure that a data center would be a good neighbor to those of us who live nearby?

Please consider this communication my official objection to a data center in St. Joseph, and/or Buchanan County.

I hope you, as our citizen’s elected and appointed officials, make sound decisions with the well-being of the people who live here in mind. 

Keep data centers away from us.

Hey all, I have an opportunity to buy a building in St. Joe,

Its located around 59 and Franklin.

My question is how is that area? We would be looking at creating a bar/restaurant.

I have some concerns over the amount of vacant land there but maybe that means the area is starting a turn around?

It appears to me to border a residential and manufacturing/industrial area. Are there alot of workplaces around there or are they abandoned buildings?

I miss home...i wanna come back

Hi all! I'll be moving to St. Joseph in the summer for a few months, and was wondering what the daily travel options are between St. Joseph and Elwood, KS. I went through some older posts in r/missouri suggesting getting a car instead of public transportation. But I do not own a car and would like to avoid buying one before summer as much as possible.

I checked the St. Joseph Transit (Go St. Joe) website for bus routes and see that I must call beforehand to reserve rides to locations in Elwood, KS, which fall under their "Demand Response Zone (DRZ)" category. How reliable is this service? Would I need to reserve one each time I visit Elwood?

Also, are there any bike routes that connect St. Joseph and Elwood? Google Maps does not show one, and from my attempt to view the route in Street View, the bridge connecting St. Joseph and Elwood does not seem safe for biking.

Any suggestions on alternatives or advice are appreciated. Thank you!
