Anyone have any good tips/tricks for a Young Link main? It seems to be a pretty lonely road, but I am committed to it! So far, I only really know YL's ledge recovery options, I'm looking for some combo options, as I feel like I can only ever get 3 hits at a time. I typically have a tough time against Falcos/Foxes and Falcons, so any tips for those specific matchups would be great.

Lately I have wondered if there are better stage rulesets for Melee. I really think that the current ruleset favors Fox too much (note I do main Fox and I do think it's a bit absurd). And I think that we could probably have even more viable characters at the top level if we do change up some things in the ruleset. I also think that there's some people complaining about wanting Frozen or Unfrozen Stadium. And I have a potential solution.

Maybe we just take Pokemon Stadium out of the mix completely?

I obviously am not a top player or have the most insight from every matchup because I only play Fox in this game and maybe I'm completely wrong. But please hear me out. Fox feels strong in Bo5, and even stronger in Bo3.

This is because Fox is so strong that he really only has 1 "bad" stage in most matchups. For example, Sheik really wants to go on Battlefield, Jigglypuff really wants Dreamland, Marth wants FD. This 1 ban in every Bo3 matchup heavily impacts the meta as it negates Fox's weakest stages and makes it even easier for the Fox player in almost EVERY matchup.

Not only this, but in Bo5s, Fox is exceptionally strong having access to Pokemon Stadium (frozen or unfrozen or w/e) AND Final Destination. These two stages are just so strong for Fox in some matchups that it's crazy that the opponent doesn't even get a ban in Bo5 and has to win in the first game on the most "neutral" stage, otherwise the odds are suddenly very against them.

- VS Jigglypuff, Fox has 2 really strong counterpicks in FD and PS. And then even Yoshi's Story is good for him too.

- VS Sheik. Fox again has great counterpicks in FD and PS.

- VS Peach. It's similar again except she actually likes FD and doesn't want PS.

I do recognize that removing Pokemon Stadium slightly nerfs ICs, Falcon, and Marth against Fox. BUT... The main reason I want to propose an idea like this is because I believe that the current ruleset helps Fox more than it hurts him. Removing stadium also makes the Frozen vs Unfrozen a non-issue.

Here is an example of a ruleset I wouldn't mind having fleshed out.

Starter Stages: 
Yoshi’s Story 
Battlefield 
Dreamland 

Counterpick Stages (Bo5 only)
Fountain of Dreams
Final Destination

In Bo3, maybe starter stages only?

In Bo5, you get access to FoD and FD as counterpick stages.

We could even have versions of this ruleset where you can only ban 1x per set (in bo3 and in bo5), or something where you can't go back to any stage even if you won or lost on it. There's a lot of different things that haven't even been tried. I just think the current stagelist is tired, gives Fox too much of an advantage, and I think having Stadium + Final Destination buffs Fox more than it hurts him. Discussions around Frozen/Unfrozen Stadium are also tired.

I'm not saying that this example is it or the best idea ever. Just saying that we need to experiment more instead of just doing the same thing over and over again because I think a better stagelist ruleset does exist out there, and will make Melee more interesting (since it will shake up the meta).

Let me know what you guys think or if I'm too crazy

tl;dr
- Fox is already the strongest character, and current stagelist benefits him.
- We could just remove PS completely and maybe that helps in some ways?
- Regardless of what we choose to do... in the end, if we don't test anything with new rulesets, we won't know.
- There's a lot of creative options to explore, but no one is really trying anything which is a bummer.

If you asked me a week ago if there was any remote chance of M2K breaking through top 8 at a tournament of this size I would have said absolutely not. No disrespect toward M2K, he is a legend but there comes a point where old gods must rest and the era of melee which he retired in wasn't part of the todays meta game.

M2K's recent performance throws that all into question for me. I'm a decent player. #1 ranked in my little neck of the woods but not a serious threat to any top player. It's a pretty common discussion us smashers have, like if I could time travel back to 2012 I could beat so-and-so's ass and I'd totally crack top 8 at Evo or whatever. Now I am humbled, I'm just going to shut up for a while.

It's not even just that M2K was beating Wizzy game after consecutive game, barely loosing to him over the span of 2 sets. It was how he was beating him. It felt like I was watching M2K's old shiek from like 6 years ago.

There's always talk about how the modern meta is the best melee has ever been and it probably is, but mayyybeeee..... I'm just saying M2K 3-0'd Wizzy the first set and then took him to game 5 the second set and for a minute there it frankly didn't look like it was going to be that close.

I know M2K still plays/practices casually but there's a massive difference between that and competing. I think his game play speaks for itself. It really hasn't changed that much from back when he was seriously competing.

New to Melee, usually I'm against picking super popular and higher tier characters in fighting games but Fox just feels so buttery smooth. It feels like he goes exactly where I want him to go, whereas with other characters I think I have to sort of maneuver their physics or input lag a bit (not necessarily a bad thing though, I've found Captain Falcon to be incredibly fun to move around with).

While I'm sure Fox is a popular character (to a layman, it's probably the only character you ever hear about from this game), who else do you frequently match with on Slippi?

sup. i'm thinking about getting a laptop to play on slippi. i don't really want a clunky desktop. are there good, cheap options for running melee?

How do I find tournaments near me or local people to play with in person or online?

These days, joining a local Discord community is the best way to find local events and people to play with. Once you have a Discord account, Google "[your city/state/province/region] + Melee discord" or see if your region has a Discord group listed here on melee.tv/discord

It can seem daunting at first to join a Discord group you don't know, but this is currently the easiest and most accessible way to find out about tournaments, fests, and netplay matchmaking. Your local scene will be happy to have you :)

Yes. Melee Newbie Netplay is a discord server specifically for new players. It also has tournaments based on how long you've been playing, free coaching, and other stuff. How can I set up Unclepunch's Training Mode?

I'm trying to get better at the game, but I feel like I have no idea what to practice. I have just gotten down all of the basic tech (wavedashing, l-canceling, SHFFA) but still am seeing little progress. I keep getting told that I just need to keep practicing, but I don't know what to practice. All of the beginner guides start with the essentials that I already have down, but they don't mention what to start practicing after.

Is there any resources that you used when you were at this point in the game? Do you have any recommendations? I am sorry if this is any over asked question, but I can't seem to find anything helpful for me.

I just got into playing melee on pc and am aware I need an adapter if i want to play with a gamecube controller. But I’m being told a bunch of things like some adapters are better than others, I need to “overclock” my adapter, etc.

So I would like just a straight forward answer and what to actually do to start playing with a gamecube controller, im sure many people have asked this in the past but I would like an opinion in the modern day.

People love falcon dittos, even people who don't play the character will play the ditto for fun. All the things that make the character fun are still there like being able to move around, combo anything into anything, and go flying out for edge guards. There's almost no cheese because falcon can't really gimp his own recovery with set knock back or weird b-moves.

Its not fun to be Marth in certain situations and all those situations are hugely amplified in the ditto like getting ledge trapped, because your character has no real invincibility like peach.

And Marth can't get down from getting juggled because as it turns out, if you fall at the exact same speed as another floaty character it's really easy to shark them from below.

Recovery requires a level of precision that gets disrupted by variations in CRTs. There's a taboo in falcon dittos about uptilting to edge guard. That's because it's not fun to be falcon recovering to ledge which requires near pixel perfect positioning. Its not fun to be Marth recovering in the ditto until you reach a high level otherwise it's just the lamest execution tests.

So it's lame when the matchup revolves around cheese and sometimes it's lame when the ditto removes all the cheese. Like Pikachu racks up percent painfully slow and uses edgeguards to close out stocks against most characters. But in the ditto you can't really edgeguard so it revolves around flailing tiny characters with little disjoint in their attacks.

So basically it really depends on the character whether the ditto is lame. With all that being said, of course sheik dittos are lame you chain grabbing scrubs. Of course puff dittos are lame have fun guessing 1 out of 30 timings for when your character will go in. Of course peach dittos are lame have fun dealing with 60 neutral wins for a single game, and all that gets thrown out the window with one turnip RNG which is guaranteed to happen because of how many slot machine pulls you get per stock. Of course IC dittos are lame go spam downsmash so hard that the POTS in your c-stick wears out. Of course samus dittos are lame go pretend that you know how to move around when all you're really doing is crouch canceling. Of course fox dittos are lame go spam your random aggression at each other and see who wins. Of course falco dittos are lame because the dumber bird wins. Of course Pikachu dittos are lame you're nothing without your gimps. Of course pichu dittos are lame have fun headbutting each other over and over like sheep. Of course Luigi dittos are lame enjoy both of you sliding 50 feet away whenever a shield is hit and getting recovered on for free by RNG. Of course Mario and Doc dittos are lame go spam crouch cancel against every move except downsmash which either kills or randomly misses because of a spot dodge. Of course mewto dittos are lame go hide your behinds like you're in a highschool locker room trying to not get whipped by wet towels. Of course ganon dittos are lame go pretend like you aren't going to Tipman gimp each other and then randomly just do. Of course falcon dittos are lame go trade nairs into clank jabs over and over. Of course young link is lame go play dodgeball with your 3 projectiles and pretend that camping plats is cool because you're jumping around. Of course link dittos are lame go clank swords until you get bored enough to spam up-b gimps and pray. Of course Ness dittos are lame go bounce around until you get hit out of your double jump cancel and just die. Of course yoshi dittos are lame go use your bad approach options against both aerial and ground parry. Of course DK dittos are lame go stale your upair 10 times in a row as a reward for camping each other out. Of course bowser dittos are lame go play beyblades with each others up-b's. Of course Kirby dittos are lame go backair like a puff with no drift and uptilt like a fox who plays like a sheik. Of course GnW dittos are lame go get shield poked in the eye 20 times per game. Of course zelda dittos are lame go spam backair at each other and pretend it's more fun than pressing down-b and chaingrabbing 4/4 stocks. Of course Roy dittos are lame go down tilt each other into the air even though you have zero useable aerials. Of course the Marth ditto is lame go spam fsmash in neutral and fsmash after 1 or 2 aerials and fsmash after grabs. Other than that, dittos are as fair and honest matchups as you can get.

Willingness to dig in defensively. Playing to frustrate as an option rather than as bm. Stamina. Burst play. Good hair. Can anyone else see this?
