Some of the most legendary players to ever live, who gets glazed as if they're gods have commited frauds, been accused of various sex crimes, were rampant drug addicts, were violent, and more, and yet none of that is mentioned by pundits when they talk about how amazing they were (aside from grazing the issue like "if only he focused on the game more" etc), Messi is very tame in comparison, this did literally nothing to ruin his reputation

Yep, they kept maradonas image clean enough until he died. Honestly there is just too much to know about everyone which is why commonly don’t idolize these people.
If they are great at the sport, praise them for that. Be careful what extras you add to it cause while it is a sport it is also full of marketing and national interests. Some of these guys are genuine and some are just using their media training skills. So many idols end up showing how human they are with enough time.

Your comment could use a bit of detail. When you say "less good", are you referring to his talent as s player or his character as a person? Assuming it's the latter, sure, everyone can be gritty at times on the pitch, but it's not a binary "good or bad" situation, it's a spectrum.
Even if someone like Paredes was a nice guy outside of the pitch, you would probably still think him to be a bit of an asshole because of just how rotten he is on the pitch. Which he is, of course.
Likeability and sportsmanship go hand in hand. That should be a surprise to noone.

Again: Character-wise, your average joe ahead of you in the supermarket line is probably as good of a person as Messi, if not better than him. Messi is fine as far as multi-hundred million dollar football divas go but that's a pretty low bar to clear, let's be real. Also, convicted for tax evasion. Not a saint.

To be honest my image about him has worsened as time has passed. I really thought he was a very nice person and preferred him to CR7 10 years ago. Now even if I really think he will always be on the Football Olympus and he deserves all the praise about his skills, as a person he definitely has a dark side and being amazingly good at football shouldn't make people believe otherwise.
