Can we sort out the insane rating (as in TV-PG etc) history?
Was wondering if anyone could shed any light on the TV ratings history of Space Ghost? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZoU08A8BRlE
Here's what I can gather. I need to talk a little bit about the bootleg history of Space Ghost, but no links to full episodes will be provided
Basically, from what I can tell, on services like KaZaa in about 2002-ish, most of the episodes of Space Ghost available for download were really low-res, most of season 5 and 6 in real low res, and on Cartoon Network, and the TV PG had a very specific appearance. It sort of took longer to appear and fade away, and it was not transparent.
But then, another set of bootlegs came out that aimed for higher quality (clip from one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4H-3N0jNbDI ) when it reran on Adult Swim in like 2003-ish, but a strange thing: these were the episodes that were TV PG on the low-res Cartoon Network rips above, but suddenly TV Y7 when they reran on Adult Swim. And with them, a few VHS Cartoon Network rips that were Y7, the ratings showing up on the screen earlier and translucent, like "Joshua."
What I *assume* happened: Originally, the ratings were implemented in 1997, and the show alternated between Y7 and PG as its alternative to alternating between G and PG as some other shows do. Pre adult swim, Curling Flower Space was the exception, with a TV PG D. But then, in 1998-ish, there appears to have been a "blanket TV PG" period where everything was raised to TV PG, but they accidentally downgraded Curling to TV PG in the process. I saw a guy with a "cowboy" username in 2007-ish on the Adult Swim message boards upload his copy of Curling onto YouTube, and it had the different fade-in and was indeed TV PG with no D, so I'm calling that confirmation.
Then when Adult Swim came around, they dropped that in favor of restoring the original Y7/PG alternations.
The only other pre-Adult Swim ratings: TV PG L for Kentucky Nightmare, The Justice Hole, and, strangely, Fire Drill. TV G for "A Space Ghost Christmas" IIRC
After Adult Swim: TV PG L for Knifing around, Sweet for Brak, and Whipping post *I believe.* Pretty sure Flipmode first aired as TV PG LV, but reran in 2004ish upgraded to TV 14 LV. Elizabeth Reed was originally TV PG DV; now on the Adult Swim website, it shows a PG DV graphically, but the text shows 14; not sure if it ever re-aired on real TV with a 14. Idlewild South ditto. Peach was also PG *something* I can't remember. Dreams and Fillmore were always TV 14 L; not sure if any other shows have ever gotten away with the s word on a 14 instead of needing a TV MA for that.
The only other strange one: there appears to be one airing of Girl Hair from the red logo era Adult Swim, where the TV PG stays on until Space Ghost first punches Zorak, and then it turns into a TV 14 and stays on screen for like two minutes. It's fun to take that with the copy of Knifing Around and the first few episodes of Aqua Teen, Sealab, and the Brak show where the rating hangs for the whole length of the episode, with the red AS logo for only a few seconds, and use it to transition a playlist to other regular red logo adult swim rips in a playlist, with the original Pool commericals in between.
And Cartoon Planet (the 22 minutes 1997 CN version) was a flat TV Y7 in 1997, was TV PG in 2005 when it reran with Milk Chan, and PG yet again when I saw it last fall on a Cartoon Network retro block at like 7PM in the afternoon. Only thing of note is that the episode with the full Space Ghost costume dance, Andy flips a middle finger at the end if you freeze frame it, and lol at the fact that that got a Y7 at one point.
Now the streaming episodes on Adult Swim website are *never* Y7, not even Gilligan, all TV PG minimum. I'm curious to find out what happened with the 2014 marathon, like what went down with Warren long version and Fire Ant long version at that point. The DVD box sets also had American and/or Canadian DVD ratings on them that should be a simple matter of reference
Good luck figuring out TBS Cartoon Planet, or what went down in other countries.
Am I missing anything?
