Guides For modding START HERE!

1.0k Upvotes

Greetings, Adventurer!

You are not even sure what mods are or if you want to get them?

You know what mods are, but are new to Skyrim and want to get a nice working modded version with visuals and VR mods but minimal effort?

You are experienced with modding Skyrim SE but are not sure what specific VR mods you need and don't want to go through the hassle of setting it up yourself?

You already played through the game and want to experience some new stuff, make the game more challenging, or up your role-play?

We got you covered.

First of all, mods are modifications to the base game. You install them, they change/add stuff to the game. Some fix things that are broken in vanilla, some improve visuals, some add new content, and most importantly for us, some add VR immersion and interaction mechanics. You can verify if the mods are installed by either literally seeing the thing that you installed in the game or by experiencing the changes ingame. Many mods do not have a Mod Configuration Menu but just exist in the game after installation.

You might ask yourself "Should I install mods before I finish Skyrim VR the first time?" and my personal answer is a clear Yes. You do not have to add tons of extra content, but the base vanilla game (vanilla = unmodded) just has a few broken things, or especially in Skyrim VR it lacks any good modern VR interaction. You will vastly improve your experience if you install a basic set of mods even without altering the actual game content at all.

Nowadays, there exist a few fully automatic mod list installers (Wabbajack). If you are looking for such an automated installation of curated mod lists, scroll down to "Auto-Installers".

But before you just install these, let me show you around by explaining the most important mods for Skyrim VR in an absolutely minimal list for an as-fast-as-possible manual modding. It is subjective, of course, as all lists are, but I think many can agree on most of these.

If you don't want to install more than that, and you want to install mods manually, install these! If you just want to know what the awesome mod authors here have to offer, read these for a quick overview!

The list is still pretty vanilla, other than the VR-specific things and some visuals. If you want to stray off the super-duper lightweight path and include some changes to the game itself or feel like you have time for more than 10 mods, you're better off checking out our very comprehensive Guide Compendium, which contains all the knowledge we collected over time. We also have a comprehensive list of VR Specific Mods that includes some important mods that couldn't make it into this list for the sake of minimalism.

It does not matter much if you use Vortex or MO2 as your organizer, but don't use NMM, it's old and outdated. Vortex is a little easier to use with shorter lists, which is why we recommend this for our target audience here, i.e. you readers who want a fast manually modded Skyrim and then just play. Make sure to read this guide on how to enable modding with Vortex first. There’s also a video guide on modding with Vortex if you prefer that. GamerPoets also has video guides on other SkyrimVR modding topics. As said, Vortex is easier for small lists and people who only want to mod the mentioned mods below without much more. Vortex also works for larger lists but at some point, it is easier and recommended to use MO2 for large and complex lists.

If you want to build a complex list in MO2, you should pick the FUS Wabbajack list below and use the basic profile only, as it comes with all the fixes and little things premade.

I also recommend you check out these ini tweaks and Bilago’s Tool to edit the ini files easily.

Without further ado, here's the list:

  1. SkyUI - follow this video guide! Be 100% sure to download the correct Skyrim VR version (Current VR build 2.0.12 (runtime 1.4.15)).
  2. VRIK Player Avatar - gives you a body, weapon holsters, gestures for magic and shouts, and finger animations for oculus and index users. Watch this setup guide video to get the most out of it. It's part of the install video of 1.
  3. HIGGS - hand collision, object grabbing, and gravity gloves-style mechanics for Skyrim VR, all-around must-have mod! I show some of its features in this video. Now also includes two-handing weapons, physical weapon collisions, and an automatic fix for the physics engine.
  4. Spell Wheel VR - Selection wheel mod for Skyrim VR. It allows you to select spells, weapons, shields, arrows, potions, poisons, food, torch and more without going into a menu very quickly by the press of a button or button combinations to spawn the wheel and hold your hand over the item and letting go of the button. It's equipped automatically. Also shows health, stamina, magicka, enchantment, and needs bars on your wrist (configurable).
  5. True 3D Sound - this needs manual installation, let's the sound come from the direction it comes from ingame. Bethesda, if you read this, shame on you that a mod is necessary for this basic functionality.
  6. Engine Fixes VR - Important fixes for the Skyrim VR engine. BE SURE TO FOLLOW THE INSTALL INSTRUCTIONS!
  7. Weapon Throw VR - you can throw weapons now and they return like Thor's Hammer! Requires Skyrim VR Tools to work. I also made a video about it and an update video with returning weapons.
  8. Magic Improvements for Skyrim VR - Vastly improved dual casting, spell effect size scales based on magicka percentage, and additional options for aiming spells in VR.
  9. Azurite Weathers - A colorful, well-crafted, modern, and made-for-VR weather. If you prefer a more gritty and foggy setup, Onyx VR Weathers offers this, including different darkness settings for the night. Both are fine and made for VR, which is necessary because VR does not have volumetric lighting and thus some SE weathers do look weird in VR sometimes.
  10. SkyVRaan - gives you fake water reflections that really improve your visuals a lot! Have a look at the description for installation troubles. Watch this video to see its effect! Does NOT require a patch for Onyx Weathers as Onyx is already compatible by default! In case you want more water improvements, SkyVRaan is compatible and made to work nicely with Realistic Water Two.
  11. Myrkvior Trees - trees are all around Skyrim and vanilla trees shimmer horribly. This makes your game much more beautiful. You can add Morekvior for improved textures resolution.
  12. Lux - all in one lighting overhaul. Requires the USSEP Compatibility patcher which upgrades your SkyrimVR to the latest official SE version pre anniversary edition so you can use the official USSEP from before AE.
  13. Spellsiphon - fantastic magic add on, very intuitive and cool, can also be used in conjunction with archery and melee playstyles. You can watch this little introduction and tutorial video to see what it does in general.
  14. Mage VR - this mod uses an overlay to let you draw glyphs to cast and equip spells. It also has a very immersive hand-pose magic feature and (invisible) holsters (which I recommend to not use the same button as the VRIK holsters for). But the best thing is the new backpack inventory and immersive looting feature, which lets you loot via drag and drop and without pausing the game. More to come! Requires the game to be run via SteamVR (not open composite when on oculus) and requires SKSE and SkyUI VR. Watch this video to see the mod and how to use it, and this video with an update on easier install and setup!
  15. Locational Damage - headshots do extra damage. Tune up the difficulty and git gud scrub. Requires Skyrim VR Tools to work.
  16. Simple Realistic Archery - changes archery so you have to get an arrow from your quiver at the back, can easily use different arrows. Requires three helpers, check the Requirements dropdown menu for this!
  17. Noble Skyrim - overhauls architecture and other stuff.
  18. VR Vision Reshade - Need to install manually but it's not very difficult and the CAS sharpener and luma sharpener enormously improve the clarity of the picture. Alternatively, you can use Sensorium of Stereoscopy, an ENB preset made for VR, more fantasy-style but it has options, too. You cannot use the two together!
  19. No Stagger Mod - stagger is shite in VR.
  20. Blade and Blunt - combat overhaul to make the game more interesting.
  21. SMIM lite - clutter has better meshes and textures. Choose LITE!
  22. Nordic Faces - characters don't look like total ass. Minimalist and maximum compatibility.
  23. MystiriousDawn's HD Skyrim Overhaul - beautiful landscapes that work well in VR, including mountains.
  24. ETHEREAL CLOUDS and ETHEREAL COSMOS - beautiful clouds and night sky. Technically two mods, but they're super small and kind of belong to each other.

Extra, because it takes a bit more effort:

  1. Dyndolod - better view of things in the distance, makes the world much more realistic and immersive, but it takes a bit of effort to use. Check out our guide here!
  2. Dragonborn Speaks Naturally - Uses speech recognition to select dialogs and spells.

Also: No modlist is complete without Swearing Mudcrabs, and using Realm of Lorkhan you can skip the annoying cart ride intro ;) And if you like to support u/Rallyeator, go check out his made-for-VR texture-pack!

Don’t use some of the mods that are often recommended:

Surprisingly, some mainstream mods can cause issues, like Birds of Skyrim (very script heavy, corrupts saves), Immersive Armors and Immersive Weapons (known to cause issues later on when higher level), Immersive Patrols (especially the large battles can cause freezes and script lag, the lite mode is apparently okay), Immersive Citizens (has a lot of conflict potential, sometimes blocks quests, can also work though, but depends), JK’s Skyrim (can drop framerate by a lot and can lead to AI conflicts or item clipping), Open Cities (can lead to conflicts, can be performance heavy), Diverse Dragons (can cause crashes).

-------------------------------------- Auto-Installers --------------------------------------

Wabbajack mod lists are auto-install mod lists that change your game from vanilla to the exact full state of the list in a matter of hours, and you can go play right away.

We recommend using Wabbajack.

We still have guides for manual installation, but these might be outdated at some point and really, Wabbajack has options for everyone nowadays :)

There are five official Skyrim VR Wabbajack lists:

  • FUS - Fundamentals, Upgrades, and Stuff: The most lightweight and vanilla-friendly of the lists. It is modular and comes with the option of really just having the absolute essential VR mods for fixes and immersion, or having a minimalistic mod overhaul for appearance and gameplay. It is designed for people who want to start their own list, or for people who don't want to change their experience too much from vanilla but don't want to play the basic lazy port Bethesda made, either.
  • UVRE - The Ultimate VR Essentials List: UVRE is designed to give users a better looking, better controlling, and better playing Skyrim VR Experience that can be used as-is or customized to their taste. It is a complete overhaul for improved visuals and new content, as well as the relevant VR mods.
  • Librum VR: A gritty, low-magic, hardcore survival-adventure experience with an uncompromising vision. Hundreds of new quests and locations, a total mechanics overhaul, and a complete makeover of the graphics and atmosphere. The path to your destiny as the Dragonborn will be long and treacherous. Welcome to Librum.
  • Narsil: Narsil is an ambitious curated modlist that seeks to overhaul and expand Skyrim VR to make it more balanced, challenging, varied, good looking and most importantly expand the available gameplay options and make the game more immersive while optimizing the performance as much as possible.
  • Auriel's Dream: Auriel's Dream offers a unique thematic overhaul. Warmer colors kind of bring an Oblivion vibe to this modlist. Difficulty: Vanilla. Not many changes are done to alter the gameplay except adding VR-specific mods, bug fixes, and a few quality-of-life mods.

Here is an elaborate comparison video for the lists visuals and performance.

Have a look at these lists and decide what you want to check out. They are low-effort so you can also switch them if you don't like them. If you used Vortex so far and want to try out a modlist you'll need to press "Purge Mods" in Vortex and do not deploy afterwards, to stop linking the mod folders to Vortex' setup.

For questions regarding the Wabbajack mod lists, please head over to the Wabbajack Discord server or the respective individual discords of the lists.

Welcome to the sub and HAVE FUN! :)

Help First hours in MGO 4.0Beta struggling with heavy blur & outdoor performance

Hey everyone, I recently built a new PC with an RTX 4080 Super, Ryzen 7 7700, and 32GB DDR5 RAM, and decided to finally dive deep into Skyrim VR using my Quest 3 with a dedicated router and OpenComposite. I tested a few lists before landing on MGO. FUS ran buttery smooth right out of the box, though visually it was a bit underwhelming for me. Panda’s Sovngarde was completely unplayable on my end, no matter what I tweaked. Then I tried the Mad God Overhaul (MGO) 4.0 Beta, and my first impression was absolutely jaw-dropping. Walking into Dragonsreach for the first time literally made my jaw drop—indoors, everything is crystal clear, rock-solid, and easily the most beautiful VR experience I’ve ever seen.

However, as soon as I step into the open world or Whiterun, things get tricky. Outdoors, I’m forced to set DLSS to Performance and sharpening to 0.1. Strangely, switching to Quality or Balanced gives me the exact same frame rate (around 45 FPS) with noticeable stuttering, and even tweaking the FOV stencil to save resources didn't help. On top of that, because DLSS is running on Performance, everything becomes extremely muddy and blurry the moment I start moving—it literally feels like walking through clay. Standing still looks great, but motion completely ruins the image clarity.
Since I'm aiming for higher clarity during movement and more stable performance, I have a few questions for the community:
Are there specific settings or alternatives to DLSS Performance (like DLAA with reprojection/SSW) that can eliminate this severe motion blur on a Quest 3? Which specific MGO or Community Shaders settings hit performance the hardest outdoors without offering much visual gain? And lastly, is a 4080 Super + 7700 simply hitting a hard performance ceiling with MGO 4.0 outdoors, or is this an optimization/configuration issue on my end? I'd love to hear your advice and recommendations!

Mod - Research Good texture mods for skyrimvr?

I'm looking for a texture mod that would make the game look sharper. Right now, it looks like everything is made out of play dough. I have RX7800XT 16GB so I don't think performance will be an issue. I couldn't find VR specific texture mods so I didn't know if what I find would be compatible. I would reapply appreciate if you can recommend some. My virtual desktop resolution is at Godlike so I wanna avoid any overkill texture resolutions that would be not visible from the headset.

Help OpenComposite Unleashed will be the death of me...

Three hours. Three damn hours I spent trying to get this supposedly easy mod to work, and I still couldn't get close. I've followed the instructions, looked up every guide, and even deleted my entire modlist and reinstalled Skyrim VR from the ground up, and it STILL won't work for me!

And clearly I've done something wrong, because the second I start playing the latest MGO beta, it works perfectly!

I can no longer deny the fact that I am clearly very bad at this. To be specific:

  • Every time I have attempted to launch the game with the mod the game immediately reverts back to SteamVR.
  • I am using Virtual Desktop and have changed the OpenXR runtime to VDXR (As per multiple instructions)
  • I had ALL required softwares, a quest 3, and a legitimate copy of Skyrim VR.

If anyone can point me in the right direction, I appreciate it!

Help Dismemberment Framework delay

Hello there,

I am using the dismemberment framework and next-gen decapitation. The mod works fine with the exception of human decapitation. If I try to decapitate human enemies there is a short delay, after which the head comes off. Other enemy types like Draugr, Wolfs and Trolls work perfectly fine. Cutting Limbs also works smoothly.

Does anyone know a fix? I am using the FUS mod list as groundwork. Are there any mods which could conflict with the dismemberment framework? Would Maximum Carnage be the better option?

Thanks.

Help Is this laptop good enough for Skyrim VR?

Post image
0 Upvotes

I've always wanted to play Skyrim VR, and now that I'm working I have a chance to actually buy all the things I need. I was just wondering whether this laptop I've chosen for myself is good for the game, and if there's any other laptops that would be better than this. (I don't want to use a desktop)

Discussion FUS, MGO 4.0, or Panda on RTX 4080 Super?

Hey everyone!
I recently upgraded my PC and am finally ready to dive back into Skyrim VR, so I’m looking for recommendations on which Wabbajack modpack fits my setup and preferences best.

My specs are an RTX 4080 Super (16GB VRAM), Ryzen 7 7700, and 32GB DDR5 RAM, with a target performance of a minimum rock-solid 72 FPS (preferably native, no heavy reprojection only of you say the Trade is worth it ;) ).

I played FUS 2 years ago on an RTX 3060 12GB and loved the gameplay (applying magic to weapons, werewolf overhauls, HIGGS/VRIK interaction), but later tried MGO on my old RTX 3080 10GB and found the performance unplayable due to heavy stutters. Now I’m really tempted to try MGO 4.0, but before downloading over 400 GB of mods, is there even a realistic chance of hitting a locked 72 FPS on a 4080 Super? Or would I be much better off going back to FUS with pushed graphics, trying Panda’s modpack, or looking at another pack entirely that strikes the ultimate balance between top-tier visuals and smooth gameplay? I’d love to hear your experiences before starting the giant download! Thanks!

Discussion WARNING! Recent Mod Uploaded to Nexus Can Cause Electrical Damage and Fire!

Edit: The mod author reuploaded the mod and it now says "LOW POWER Space Heater" despite the mod author claiming its always been that way, it hasn't but its a step in the right direction. We just need a voltage test, and a test that turns it on and off over the course of several hours and we MIGHT be able to deem this safe.

The mod in question is this one

https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/185874

A plug in your space heater or heat lamp into a smart plug for "real heat" just trust me bro mod

I already reported the mod for being dangerous, and let the mod author know , but instead the mod author decided to lock down their comments and delete mine warning people of the hazards of their mod.

Everyone with simple common sense these days know how dangerous space heaters can be if used irresponsibly. And I believe this mod is most definitely an irresponsible use of a space heater. Mod author doesn't bother to specify types of space heaters and heat lamps that can be safely used, if there even is any, and instead just advertises the latest craze of "feeling real heat" on you. They never mention that the heat you feel can be an actual fire caused by shutting the space heater off and on over and over again. By the time you would even realize your house caught on fire due to you know, wearing a VR headset, it would already be too late. People play these around families, ect, and ignoring the danger of using a mod like this can cause life threatening damage. This is not to mention the electrical damage to homes that can cost thousands to fix.

No specifications on voltage requirements, if the smart plug that is turning these on and off can handle it repeatedly over the course of a long play session, no cautions or warnings, nothing. Just plug in and play guys it will be alright.

Now naturally multiple people brought this up to the mod author so they could maybe responsibly test their mod a little bit. Only to have their comments removed and told to "Go touch grass." Now I am here because i'm not sure where else to report this to. This is dangerous and the mod author couldn't care less about the danger of their mod to even thoroughly test their set up. This isn't like the using a fan for wind mod. Nor did the author of that mod tell you to plug in a damn ac unit to a smart plug to do the task.

So I guess ill do the work the mod author was too lazy to do themselves and post this I found on the internet.

"Generally, no—plug the space heater directly into a wall outlet. The Consumer Product Safety Commission specifically recommends direct wall connection because additional plug connections can overheat under a heater’s sustained high electrical load.

A typical full-size heater uses about 1,500 watts, or 12.5 amps at 120 volts, which puts many smart plugs close to their maximum rating. TP-Link, for example, states that space heaters are not recommended because they may spike above their normal operating specifications.

Avoid using a smart plug when:

  • The heater is 1,500 watts.
  • The smart plug is rated below 15 amps or 1,800 watts.
  • Either manual prohibits heaters or high-current appliances.
  • You plan to turn it on remotely, while sleeping, or while nobody is in the room.
  • The plug, outlet, or cord becomes warm, loose, discolored, or smells hot.

The safer solution is a space heater with built-in scheduling, thermostat, timer, tip-over protection, and overheat shutoff, plugged directly into a tight-fitting wall outlet. Never use an extension cord or power strip."

Help VFS not hooking up to skse

using tahrovin grit

I couldn't get past the main menu, so I did some digging and found out none of the plugins were loading. So I went to MO2 and used explore virtual folder to make sure everything was actually in there, and confirmed it. But skse just refuses to see the virtual folder for some reason idk

Help Vrik shield placement problem

I was just about to fight Harkon when suddenly I realized that the shield I was using was on the wrong shoulder, I tried moving it back by holding grip on my left shoulder, and I didn't feel any vibration or anything to indicate the placement had moved back to my left shoulder, and now I don't know what to do, I just updated vrik on vortex today, could that have something to do with it?

Hi. I have been trying to fix this error with this mod but nothing seems to work. Every requirement is installed. Things i have tried:

  1. Install BEES

2.. Reinstall Mod

  1. Check skse.log. The plugin appears as loaded

  2. Use ssedit to remove esl flag

  3. Install manually

I have found other people with the same problem in the posts of the nexus page, but no solution. People who have fixed say it was by chance.

Help would be appreciated.

Help New to vr, need someone smarter than me to help solve major lag issues

Post image
5 Upvotes

I got my quest 3 about a week ago to play skyrim wireless thru VD, but have had no luck getting much farther past the title screen due to the sheer lag. I have AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT and Ryzen 5 7600x, which I thought would be more than enough to run panda's sovengarde - even when i try booting vanilla skyrim it is not much better either.

I configured a secondary router dedicated for vr and hooked it up to my computer, and while I feel better now having a closer reliable connection, it didn't seem to make much difference. I uninstalled steam link and meta link because they were kinda annoying, and tried setting up opencomposite instead. This somehow made it even laggier, however.

I'm at the point where I'm just toggling different random settings to see what changes, and would like some proper guidance. Thanks!

Bug CTD on frequent fast travel - can't figure it out

Hi all. Hail Mary here, but has anyone seen this before and any ideas on how to sort it out?

I've tried:

  • Increasing page file
  • Increasing GPU cache
  • Removing clear map of Skyrim and trying various others
  • Regenerating DynDOLOD 3 50 different ways, I've got it very very lean
  • Removing DynDOLOD 3
  • Rolling back VRIK
  • Removing menu maid 2 as that was causing other problems
  • Cleaning save with fallrim
  • Cleaning core compatibility plugins for USSEP b
  • A ton of ini tweaks related to map under display
  • I can't recall everything else, essentially I've thrown the kitchen sink at this and I have no idea how to fix it. Taking shots in the dark
  • Will buy a million beers if anyone has the answer
  • Attached the most recent log

Bug Hit a brick wall with MGO 4.0 beta RC2 (crashes at same spot)

Quest 3/5090 Virtual Desktop. Been giving MGO 4.0 beta a tryout, but unless someone has a bright idea I think I've hit a brick wall. It's too bad, because late this afternoon I completed Bleak Falls Barrow and got the Dragonstone in one glorious bug-free session (CS Quality & DLAA, the game looks unbelieveable). SkyrimVR with MGO is unequalled when everything is working!

I was so psyched after my my Dragonstone win, I decided to stay in tonight and get my first dragon kill at the Western Watchtower. All seemed fine until I tried to leave Whiterun...the second I step across the Whiterun gate to the Western Watchtower at the crossroads, the game freezes and crashes. Tried restarting and cranking down the settings, no joy...still crashes at exactly the same spot. Checked the crash log, but it's all over the place...each crash seems to pin the blame on a different mod (higgs_vr.dll, UltimaSteedsVR, etc.), it's just not consistent (not even sure why UltimaSteeds would be a factor as I'm not riding a horse and there isn't one in sight). Tried turning UltimaSteedsVR off anyway as I don't need it, but that caused the game to crash on startup, not sure why so I had to restore it to get back to the crossroads.

Did a google search on crashing in the same physical location and it suggested turning off Community Shaders as apparently this can happen when changing cell locations, tried it...no joy, still freezes at the crossroads. Spent close to 3 hours trying different combinations and restarting (it wouldn't take so long if the game would start quicker, but what can you do), never got past the crossroads of death. Seems like I'm a prisoner of Whiterun for now, so I'm giving up, reluctantly. I'm willing to follow up on any suggestions (no voodoo please), but failing that I guess I'll pick this up again when RC3 is available, hopefully that'll fix it but I'm concerned as I never saw this behavior on any of the other MGO 3.x versions, and I've played a bunch. Thanks for reading!
