Everyone gives beginner advice but some lessons stick after you mess them up yourself.
Bad layering, wrong gear, overconfidence, icy runs, skipping lessons, not checking conditions, going too fast too early

whatever it was.

My family lives in Santa Fe and we typically visit them for the holidays. I usually go to Taos because I've bought the Ikon pass the past few years and it's included. However, I did not buy the pass this year because I am about to have my first child in September, although still may purchase a four day session pass as I live in Los Angeles and may do a weekend trip to Mammoth.

I have been to Ski Santa Fe and really enjoyed it but I have read it could be very crowded around the holidays. Curious is anyone else has been to any other NM mountain and if so, which one would they recommend for someone doing a day trip or one day overnight from Santa Fe.

My family are big skiers. We all live in the Northeast US and every year plan a family skip trip to Colorado. We usually go to Vail or Park City.

In 2027, we are looking to switch things up and take everyone to Europe and ski the Alps for the first time. I've been doing a ton of research and am really torn between Les 3 Vallèes or St. Anton. Here are my details and thoughts:

- 8 total people - 2 seniors (65+), 5 young adults, and one child (10 years old)

- All advanced skiers - used to 8+ hour days in Vail. Most of us prefer cruising and long trails. We can do glades or harder terrain but prefer to cruise. Our favorite runs are long intermediate-level runs in the sunshine with little crowds

- We are looking for fun restaurants, bars, and shopping for after skiing - but we don't need aggressive Après clubs. My dad is 73 and my nephew is 10 - so we prefer outdoor live-music, casual bars, and fun restaurants. Our favorite place is the Red Lion in Vail for those who've been

- Budget isn't as important - this is our one family trip per year so we aren't as concerned about budget as long as it isn't totally egregious. We are used to Vail and Park City prices

- Flying from NYC - we are ok with a long drive but ideally the slopes are within 2 hours of an accessible airport

- Timing - We are looking at February - flexible on the week

From what I've read online - Les 3 Vallées, specifically Meribel, seems like a really good option. Others have told me St. Anton is an awesome mountain. But I'm open to other suggestions since none of us have skiied in Europe before!

“Skied” Warren Dunes, MI 7/19/26 fun trip swimming, and hitting vineyards. First time skiing dunes! Used old skis, warm weather wax, detuned tips and tails, and set dins low.

Traveling next month to Valle Nevado, Chile.

I’d planned on just bringing boots/gear but renting skis. Now I’m thinking my wife and I should bring ours and just rent for the kids.

Anyone have a good travel bag recco for two sets of skis - something easy to carry around?

We’ll mostly be on mountain, don’t need to schlep bags around too much. Checking one or two bags (boots / helmets) anyway, what’s one more?

How are you all making the decision to get a pass vs. pay walk-up prices when you're only planning to ski for a few days at one specific resort? We are visiting family in Idaho next year and will have the chance to ski at Sun Valley over President's Day. I'm debating whether to get the Mountain Collective pass, which would be nice because then I could get two days guaranteed plus 50% off any additional days, but I'm not 100% positive I'd actually get to use it - between the risk of a bad snow year and childcare responsibilities (and risk of illness), you just never know. I purchased a Mountain Collective pass for use in March/April 2020 and you can guess how that turned out, so I'm a bit turned off by the upfront price this time. 

When it comes to Sun Valley specifically, does anyone know if any local shops offer discounts on the walk-up rate? If so, maybe that's the way to go for my situation. 

Had a weird experience last weekend where the eastfacing runs were already slushy and heavy by 10am but the northfacing stuff was still holding up like legitimate spring skiing well into the afternoon. Not a massive mountain either, just a midsized hill in the northeast. The difference was pretty stark.

Got me thinking about how most people I see just pick a run they like and lap it regardless of time or sun exposure, which is fine, but you leave a lot of good snow on the table that way. My buddy kept heading back to the same groomer that had turned into mashed potatoes while I was having a genuinely good time a ridge over.

Curious how others approach a lateseason day. Do you actively chase the shadow line as it moves, or just kind of go with the flow and accept whatever the mountain gives you? Does this change depending on the resort layout, like whether you have a good trail map that actually shows aspect?

Also wondering if anyone has a favorite lateseason mountain specifically because the layout makes it easy to follow the good snow throughout the day rather than just getting lucky with it.

Hey Im planning on staying with some family members in canada from january - april. I will be working at my aunties cafe 3 weeks a month in edmonton, then once a month i will spend one week at a really cool ski resort. So basically i have time to go to 4 cool ski resorts, i dont mind travelling obvi like plane bus etc. I wanted to get reccomendations for awesome ski resorts worth my time. Ive been snowboarding my whole life so I appreciate high level terrain and powder (obvi). I like the idea of marmot basin cause its a 4hr bus from my aunties house, whistler is tempting but everyone says its overpriced. I dont mind spending a decent amount on my experience cause i love snowboarding so thats not a huuuuuge issue for me but obviously spending less money is awesome. Whistler is tempting bc u can spend $1100 on that skionepass thing for unlimited access all season and idm going to whistler 4 times if it really is that good 🏂🏂🏂🏂

Missing quite a few, but fun to see all the places I’ve skied.

Ive been on the hunt for the perfect touring ski that is somewhat light on the uphill (not an absolute necessity, i mostly do shorter east coast tours and definitely don’t mind some extra weight) but also feels more like a full-bodied freeride ski on the way down. I’ve owned Kastle tx103s which were an absolute dream on the uphill but really just didn’t have the playfulness to feel super fun on the downhill compared to other skis I’ve owned. (The inevitable chatter of such a light ski also didn’t help) I also have k2 reckoner 112s for the deeper stuff and they are more fun than anything I’ve ever had before, however they are a bit heavy and 112 isn’t exactly a daily driver width for the east coast. Anyone have some recommendations for something like this in the 96-104mm range?

My extended family is renting a home in Whitefish the week of Christmas. Any recommendations on what to do (I think they scheduled a sleigh ride and dinner one night) or where to go or where to rent our skis from?

Im just curious about the life of ski instructors and what its actually like, the goods and the bads as I am tired of my office job and doing a career brake 11week skiing style holiday where I also get my csai1 and 2.

I love skiing and have been skiing since im 4 so im not hoping into this out of the blue, but I was curious about the realities of the job.

What comes to mind for me is you spend so much time on the mountain but probably dont get much time to properly enjoy it skiing for yourself as you will be teaching most days and hours of the day. Pay is obviously lower, especially at the beginning, so saving for stuff becomes difficult. Difficulty finding next seasons jobs?

However, you spend your working day on the mountains and teaching people stuff you are passionate about, when you improve and get private clients who know how to ski its probably quite fun? You could hemisphere hop for the different seasons and see a little more of the world and ski areas other people might never.

What else comes to mind? Im happy to hear anything about your guys experience.

Resorts in the Chilean Andes are getting pummeled. Valle Nevado, La Parva, and Nevados de Chillán have all picked up close to 90" (230 cm) in the past three days.

And there's more coming — Nevados de Chillán is forecast for 240"+ (600 cm) over the next two weeks.
