Looking for my next shortwave radio (City listener). Thoughts on XHDATA 808, QODOSEN DX-286, or TECSUN PL-520?

Hi everyone, I need some advice.

I'm thinking about buying another shortwave radio in a few months. The options I currently have in mind are: the XHDATA 808, the QODOSEN DX-286, and the new TECSUN PL-520.

I'm looking for a radio with the best possible shortwave reception and minimal interference, as I live in the city and there's a lot of electrical noise. I want a radio that will last me for many years, has good sound quality, and a solid battery life. I don't travel much, so I'll mostly be listening at home and in the park. I'm not hugely interested in the airband or other utility frequencies, but I would like to explore them since I've never done it before.

I know all 3 radios are fantastic, but given my budget, I have to decide on just one. I know the XHDATA 808 is very popular and a lot of people own it, but I've read that it has a somewhat metallic sound. I don't really like that, as I highly value audio quality when listening to shortwave programs. I also know that out of the three, it has the best battery performance. I feel like it's an older model, but I'm not sure what you guys think.

What are your thoughts or recommendations? I'm from Venezuela. Thanks in advance!

WRMI 7570 kHz received in Southern California; S7 on Tecsun PL-330

Last night around 11 p.m. Pacific Time (0600 UTC), I received WRMI on 7570 kHz carrying WRMI Legends

Receiver: Tecsun PL-330

Antenna: MLA-30+

Signal: S7

Mode: AM, 3.5 kHz bandwidth

Audio was muffled with some fading. This is one of the stronger WRMI signals I receive.

Has anyone else on the West Coast been hearing WRMI this well lately?

Sorry if I am violating the rules of this subreddit, you can safely remove this post if it does. So I have opened a Discord server bu I don't know if should I share this. I will give the link if moderators permit. It's about all types of radio, shortwave, mediumwave, FM, amateur etc. I am posting this on subreddit because it's related with shortwave. https://discord.gg/RdkFbUYN68

Introduction

Hi everyone! I'm Trevor from California. I've been into shortwave listening for a while and use a Tecsun PL-330 with an external antenna. I really enjoy DXing and seeing what I can hear from around the world. What station or frequency has been your favorite catch recently?

Discussion Looking for a portable that does SSB right...

Got a Tecsun 330 and a Grundig Elite Executive, and while both do well very well on shortwave with a longwire, no matter what I try, the SSB just doesn't sound right compared to those online SDR receivers. It's always something, even when I calibrate it using an AM signal, and fine tune the SSB down to .01khz..... So I am asking for recommendations on a portable that actually works very well on sideband. I use 3khz filter, but should I use a narrow or more wider filter? Thanks.

Discussion Advice needed, bought second hand radio, and with a lead plugged in I can only get the F.M band ? Please read full description below for more details

This is not a short wave radio but I hope someone may be able to advise me on here ?

I bought a used crown clr 9230 radio here in England , it didn’t come with a lead but I had one at home that fitted snd that was originally for a cameras battery charger. The power lead reads 2.5 amp 250v, and the sticker on back of my radio reads ac 230v 50hz 6W

I have had a similar problem with my xdata radio in that when just batteries are put in the radio it can get the A.M band fine and the F.M one and others, however…. When a power lead is added and the batteries removed , it can not get the A.M band, but can get the F.M band

Is this a problem with my homes wiring and some interference, as I just cannot understand why I can’t get the a.m frequency with a power lead but I can when it’s just batteries put in the radio? 💁🏻‍♂️

The power leads were not the ones that came with the radios, but surely that’s not the issue?

Mid-US MUF is Fantastic Now

If you want to do some long distance VHF or FM DXing - the Sporadic E layer is amazing right now across most of the US. Good time to try and listen to 11 and 10 meters, 29.600 - 29.700 FM simplex and repeaters, 6M amateurs, FM DX, etc!

I sure miss TV DX when conditions were like this
