Just Finished My Rewatch (Finale Discussion)

Upvotes

Hi all,

I watched this series back in, maybe, 2021. I forgot about it for a while and started rewatching random episodes here and there last year before deciding to do an almost full rewatch (I skipped a few random episodes here and there like 'The Totally Excellent Adventures of Mack and The D' that I just remembered to be more boring than they were worth) - P.S. 7x7 defenders, please don't hate me!

Anyway, first and foremost, it was a great rewatch and the show really stood the test of time - Not just from an enjoyability point of view, but also just in terms of CGI (bar a few exceptions) and acting.

General points and background aside, I mainly want to discuss the finale, specifically the final scene...

What a let down.

This could be an incredibly unpopular opinion but I was completely disappointed on my rewatch when I watched the final scene, the reunion scene. It felt so hollow and forced, like it had been a twenty year reunion of barely-friends rather than a yearly reunion of people who had been on adventures to last a lifetime.

Some issues I had are as follows. I've put them in chronological order for the most part, bar the overarching issues.

  • I know, for dramatic effect, the team were told they would never be in the same room again. Firstly, I don't think the show did this justice - I know it was moreso just a "life gets in the way, they all go their own separate ways" thing, but I originally remembered it to be more forced distancing, almost like they had to be apart for a certain reason. I've no major issue with this but it just makes it a bit more confusing when we're then expected to get why they never called, messaged or met up in that year's time.
  • This leads me to my second point. When did they separate? Are we meant to just believe that once the Chronicoms were defeated, they all just waltzed off into the sunset together and planned a call in a year's time? I just don't get it at all. Did they leave knowing they'd never see each other again, remembering Enoch's warning? I think that would have been more sad than this.
  • When talking about Alya, Coulson says "She's the best" and Yo-Yo says "We saw the video", which I guess counters my last point but I'm still not convinced because they seem to know that, but not know what May thinks of her job, or Mack thinks of his new base (They know where he is based so a description wouldn't be classified), have very little of idea what Coulson has done for the year, etc. It's just confusing - They seem to have discussed Alya and that's about it.
  • I feel like May and Coulson should have had closure on their relationship - At least with May saying that because he isn't human, it doesn't feel the same anymore. The chemistry was so stale here.

Anyway, I don't necessarily care about the above plot issues (I'm cautious about using that word because you all might interpret it differently/I might have missed something), and more concerned about the below:

The chemistry was just so off. Yo-Yo just randomly saying she has to go being the first major sign. But also, Simmons then proposing they make it a yearly thing. Firstly, I thought a yearly thing would be at least a given after what they went through but hell, it's again, giving me the impression they won't speak at all between now and then. Mack says "We've been too much", yet they seem to want nothing to do with each other. I know they all have their own stuff on, but it just seems like poor writing that they would hardly ever speak.

Fitz's "Bye everybody" is again, so blunt, it just doesn't seem like him at all. (Side note here, was it ever shown what anatomy issue Simmons was working on? She said it to Daisy so it has to be presumed that it was about Cora, since she's the only one anatomically interesting, being an Inhuman).

Sadly, even Daisy and Phil's goodbye was lacking, I thought, considerably moreso than Season 5.

My main overarching issue is that there was such an awkwardness and lack of chemistry, at least from my point of view. I want to emphasise this is no insult to the show or the writers because the chemistry was incredibly throughout, I just don't know if my expectations for the final scene were too high.

Speaking of, kudos to the writers because, in my opinion, the best scene in the show was something quite similar - A Spy's Goodbye. Now that was a way to do an emotional team goodbye. If the final scene had even half as much emotion as that, I'd have been happy.

Anyway, that's my take on it. Again, huge reminder that this isn't my slating the show because it's definitely one of my favourite, if not favourite, show, I just felt like this final scene could have been so much better. Even some music, like that in S3 E13, would have helped.

I'm interested to see if people are in agreement (to any extent) with me, or if you feel like the final scene did the show justice!

Thanks for reading, looking forward to hearing from you all!

Just finished A.O.S for the first time ever, AMA!

Earlier this year I made the decision to watch the entirety of the MCU, all shows and movies in chronological order, in order to prepare myself completely for Doomsday. And I would say that Agents Of Shield was by far my favorite TV show I've watched so far and not just in the Marvel universe! The show is easily one of my top shows of all time and I will recommend it to genuinely With all that being said I'm very curious if anyone has any questions for someone who just recently finished the show almost a decade after it finished!

Season 5 - Time Loop/Time Travel Questions

Hi all,

First off, just prefacing I've read similar posts in the past, but I still can't wrap my head around the S5 time travel and time loop, so I said I would ask my questions below. It would be much appreciated if anyone could take the time to clear up my queries.

I have my questions numbered and they are stand-alone ones so even if you could only answer one/make the time for one, it would be great!

1) Firstly, the idea of Yo-Yo, Fitz and Simmons being "invincible" makes no sense to me. They go to the future, understand that the time loop is the issue, so they return and agree the time loop must be broken and they must do things differently to break it (obviously later this seems to be Coulson dying, but I'll get to that in a second). But then the "invincibility" makes no sense, because the whole plan is to break the time loop so that they don't go to the broken Earth/Lighthouse in space time period. So as a result, they don't know for sure that Yo-Yo will survive to the point or that Fitz and Simmons will either.

Essentially, my query here is: If the team now wants to break the loop and understand they could die at any time before the broken Earth time as a result, Yo-Yo, Fitz and Simmons should not see themselves as "invincible". In fact, conversely, if they do see themselves as being "invincible", surely they're almost implying they will loop again?

2) Secondly, was it ever confirmed what actually broke the time loop? Was it numerous different events, or just one event? The only one that springs to mind is the fact Coulson did not take the Centipede infusion. However, as a follow-up, I still don't really understand this because what would have happened differently in this time line to make him make that decision? Surely, as selfless as he is, Coulson would have gone behind the team's back and ensured Daisy has the serum in all timelines.

3) Thirdly, I am confused in regards to the idea that Daisy quaked the Earth apart. Since it was confirmed that it was Talbot with the Gravitonium infused in him that caused this in all time lines, surely this would have been known? I know there was the footage of Daisy leaving the Zephyr shortly before the earthquakes, but surely people would have seen Talbot up until this point? And especially the team, surely they would have known it was Talbot?

I guess you could chalk this one up to information being lost throughout history/anyone who saw Talbot being dead, so this is less of an issue.

4) How did let's say, the original loop (I know there's technically no beginning, but still) start? I'm guessing the team lived throughout Talbot quaking the Earth, and Fitz built the time machine, but still? How did Enoch in the "pre-Earth breaking" time know to send the team forward? To be honest, my head hurts even thinking about this question because I know there should technically be no beginning to a loop, but there had to have been a "first time".

I may end up having follow-ups but I could probably figure most of them out myself, these are the main questions.

I also know some of these answers might not have been (at least explicitly) given in the show, but I'm hoping for some clarity at least.

Again, even if you could only answer one question, or part of one, it would be much appreciated so that I can finally wrap my head around this time travel!

Agent May's ult

May speaking Chinese to Chan Ho Yin in Season 1 and Jiaying in Season 7 respectively

If I had a nickel for every time Agent May switches to Chinese to appeal to an antagonistic Chinese character, I'd have 2 nickels, which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice...

Seriously though, I love that they make use of Ming-Na Wen's background in little ways like this, especially since May was not originally planned to be Asian.

Binge watching AoS for the first time and in the middle of season 4.

I’m smack dab in the middle of season 4. The only thing i look up are the ranking / rating of the episodes… the one I’m about to start is called “Self Control”.

I took a peek at the rest of the season ratings… consistent 9s across the board… which are breaking bad/ the wire rankings!

I’m posting because i know when i read about somebody watching one of my faves for the first time, it’s like re-experiencing the whole thing all over again. Glad i was convinced to watch this in my old (gen x) age.

AoS animatic help :)

Im currently making an AoS animatic (thing??) to to the song ‘thing- steampianist’.
It highlights the similarities between Daisy Johnson and Ruby hale in a very obsessive way.
I’m struggling to find a scene to reference for Daisy with the lyrics ‘fingers that curl in the cold like yours’
For rubys part, I used the part after her fight with Daisy, and I could use daisys part during the fight but I wanted to see if there’s any other options for daisys part :))

Anyone else dislike Season 3?

I've been having so much fun watching the show until I got to Season 3, which is just so uncomfortably bad to watch. It's like the writing level went down atleast 3 levels.

I don't like that Simmons had a new boyfriend, saying "my father would have liked you" I don't like how Lincoln and Joey react like shield killed every inhuman ever. the lack of communication and good dialogue. I was so invested but this season has been a huge turnoff to watch... I really don't like how stupid Daisy has gotten, wanting to take in people from the internet, because they hate on aliens. Even Mack felt the bad writing in the air, it felt like they made her intentionally stupid, to get a point across, which is just terrible.

This season has been such a mixed bag, and i keep finding myself pausing the show, because i just can't get through it. Is there a season worse than this season? I hope not...

Your favourite one liners

It has to be admitted that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D has to be up there in terms of shows that seamlessly integrated some great one liners. Even if most of them were dropped by Coulson! 🤭

What was your favourite?

Mine has to be in season 5, when they're on the floating ship, looking over the gravitonium..

"All right, hey. Mac Hammer, can't touch this."

Just Clark Greggs delivery had me in stitches. It was almost like it was ad libbed it was delivered that naturally 😂

i'm looking for a video

Hi, don't know if this is the right place to post this, but i'm sort of going crazy here. I remember watching this video edit on youtube like 10/12 years ago about Fitz and Simmons in season 1 with the song "Chocolate" by 1975 in the background. I can't for the life of me find it. anyone can help me out or at least point me in the right direction? I have more details if that can help

thank uuu

Radcliffe might be my favorite character in the show Spoiler

So I've been rewatching the show for the first time in years (onto s5) and I've appreciated his character a lot more on this rewatch. He was up there as one of my favorites throughout s3 and the first half of s4 but what really cemented him as my favorite was watching him unravel in the framework. When it starts getting deleted, he's well aware he has no way out and spends the last of his time helping Yo-Yo and Mack get out as a final good deed. And then that death scene. I don't know what to say about it that hasn't already been said but that glass falling into the sand is one of the best shots in whole show. Absolutely amazing

SEASON 4 IS CRAZY

First, you have expensive effects with Ghost Rider, robots being split in half, explosions, CGI buildings. Then you have the massive amounts of sets, just the framework has a ton. Also, the amount of characters you get is unreal, they introduce so many new characters and bring back old ones.

You know why it’s crazy? The massive scale is throughout the whole season. And each part of the season has its own finale which left me thinking about them all day (the robot finale and season finale are perfect episodes).

I also really love the writing, it really makes the characters like fish out of water and upturns everything we’ve grown used to. Coulson isn’t the director and the team is fragmented at the start then BOOM the framework has everyone living different lives.

ITS INCREDIBLE THAT THEY PULLED IT OFF!!! can you tell it’s my favourite season?

Anyone else find season six a hard watch? Spoiler

Conversely, loved seasons five and seven, I just found it hard to get immersed in Season Six.

I felt that Coulson "face-off" after killing him off at the end of Season Five was forced but also relatively disjointed. I felt that due to the shortened season, peril would strike and be overcome way too easy.

Yo-yo got over her new bloke way too easily, the Monoliths were loosely tied to everything then suddenly tied to everything, and the Shrikes were all too suddenly hardly a threat.

Or is there a part of the fandom that likes this season?

I fell off mid season 4 both when it was airing and when I tried rewatching it once but I finally powered through and I finally got to the What If episode and I’m loving it, Daisy expecting Lincoln and finding Ward is hilarious. Excited to watch the remaining seasons!
