i make short videos on the science of learning. this one is about a 2006 experiment where students studied a passage two ways, either rereading it or testing themselves on it from memory. a week later, the passage they reread was the one they remembered least, even though it was the one they felt most confident about. it is a clean look at the gap between what studying feels like and what actually sticks, plus what to do instead. every claim is on screen with its source and its limits.

Hi! I'm an incoming first-year Electrical Engineering student, and I'd like some advice.

Should I study from PDFs or physical books? People often say that studying on a screen is worse than studying from printed books. Is that actually true?

If I have the same level of focus and discipline with both formats, will I learn less from PDFs, or is the difference negligible?

I'm especially asking because engineering textbooks are expensive, and many students rely on PDFs. I'd really appreciate hearing from engineering students or anyone who has experience studying extensively with both formats.

Hey, i really like history, like i love hearing about old things and such, but i have a super hard time staying focused when i try to watch a video about it, or god forbid open a book..

I do think that if i were at a museum or a historical site, i would actually pay attention and consume the information given to me, but when im simply at home i cant pay attention to the things i see online.

Its not that im uninterested in history and that im forcing myself to, its just hard for me to watch/read about history without my brain going into studying mode, and then i try to memorize things as if im preparing for a test, making it so i dont actually enjoy it.

I am going to be tested for adhd soon, since ive been having such a hard time understanding and paying attention in school in general, among other issues, so if you have advice for this post and can also give advice regarding adhd that would help a ton.

I have noticed that when im watching my favorite youtuber/streamer react to videos, no matter the video topic (including history) im able to concentrate fully and not immediately go into "studying stressful" mode, the issue is that its not like my favorite youtuber is going to react to all history videos that id want to watch, so i cant just rely on that, i want to be able to focus without having to watch someone react to it too..

I was wondering if there was a certain youtube channel that makes it easy to pay attention when it comes to history and such, i usually give up a couple minutes after watching despite still wanting to learn about history.

I am someone who can’t afford college, I had some under my belt, but can’t move forward. However I yearn to learn more. So I took my experience in college, my ability to create curriculum from homeschooling my siblings, as well as free resources online to create an in depth college level course for marketing 101. That made me sit and flesh out an in depth “4 year program” for a marketing BS learning pathway. i used access to free and affordable materials - OpenStax, Youtube, Hubspot etc.

So I built something that actually closes that loop: paste or screenshot anything, and it becomes a short lesson — vocab, grammar, sentence structure, tone — with spaced repetition to make sure it sticks.

Mortimer Adler describes inspectional reading: a first fast pass through a book whose only job is to decide whether it deserves deep reading at all. Deep engagement, margin notes included, comes after, and only for the books that earn it.

I tried to learn from video courses the same way, with one adaptation: during my first watch I want to leave light marks on the moments worth returning to. And that fell apart, because videos have no margin. Taking notes meant pause, switch to a doc, type, switch back, lose my place. And a note saying "important, come back to this" gave no way back to the moment it came from.

So I built the margin myself (ClipMargin, a free Chrome extension, disclosing upfront). A note panel opens next to the video, every note saves the exact second, and an empty note is just a bookmark on the moment. When the course is done, my marks read like a map: these concepts earned deep study, or sometimes, this course was not worth digging into at all. That second outcome saves me more time than anything.

Curious about others here: do you inspect first before committing deep attention to a course or video? Or do you go deep from minute one?
