‘Get out before they kill me’: Day one of Umpherville coroner’s inquest

First day of testimony indicated that Umpherville had stolen the car from his friend who'd purchased it the day before. They acknowledged they knew him to sell and use drugs. Neither friend in the car knew he had weapons on him while they spent the night drinking together. They described him as a "nice guy." The Umpherville's lawyer has aked some questions about policy, which is not in SIRT's purview.

Job Advice

Posting on behalf of someone who is looking to move to Saskatchewan. Mature, good worker. Not attached to his phone and gets his job done. Currently working as a casual dietary aide at a retirement home. He’s looking to stay in food service or support of some sort, has been a scratch baker, short order cook etc. He’s sent some resumes but no reply. He knows Sask health takes a long time if you do hear back from them, but he’s applied at other places too. He’s worried he looks overqualified and getting passed by. He’s had a gap between food service jobs and worked high paying industrial jobs. For personal reasons he returned to food service and will stay in it. He’s well aware of the significant pay decrease, but that’s not an issue. He’s thinking employers are looking at his application and work history and think he’s not going to stay or using the job as a bounce point. However, it’s far from the truth.

Any advice for this discouraged guy?

Question Bug Report - Churchill River

Hi there, I’m hoping some one up north near Missinipe or Stanley Mission could let me know what the bugs are like this year. I saw an article from July 3rd that it’s “extreme” and it’s 10x the average around La Ronge but be nice to know from someone living up there.

Are the bugs/mosquitoes bad this year? Have a canoe trip planned.

This morning discovered the water discoloured and piles of fish dead. looked it up and looked like cyanobacteria. Called the RM and they were sending someone to look into it but said its super serious. DO NOT let your pets drink the water, its extremely lethal to dogs, even a bit will kill them. I am hoping something is done about this soon.

Question Saskpower lineman life like?

I’ve been interested getting into this trade for a while now and thinking about finally pulling the trigger. Hear stories though of brutally long days missing time with family, holidays, birthdays cause you’re always on call. Now I’m not complaining. I’ve farmed my whole life. I know what those are all like. Just was curious as I’ve heard Saskpower is a better company to work for in terms of this trade. Just want to hear your experience or if theres a better life to work balance company within this trade.

Cheers

Hey guys

The partner and I are taking our wonderful dog on a road trip through Saskatchewan this summer. One of our stops will be in Melville. Can we get a hotel/Motel Recommendation (dog friendly) for Melville? Doesn't have to be fancy just free of bugs and good for a night's sleep!

Thanks in advance!!

Big River Mill Closure and SK forest industry collective action

For those affected by the recent forestry sector impacts in northern SK, or for future similar events, a mill in BC is thriving with an alternative ownership model that rejects international firms and instead prioritizes employee ownership: https://harmacpacific.com/about-us/

History of the Employee Owned Model

\

In the spring of 2008, Harmac Pacific was shut down when its parent company Pope & Talbot went bankrupt after having their lumber business negatively impacted by the US housing construction downturn (2005-2007), leaving over 500 workers without jobs. The management team and the union executive worked together with the idea that they could restart the mill. They were able to find private investors to help with the purchase of the mill, along with the former employees who committed to purchase a 25% ownership stake in the company. On October 3, 2008, they were able to restart the mill with a single production line producing NBSK pulp at the rate of 226,000 tonnes per year. In 2009, a second production line was restarted and capital upgrades in 2010 and 2011 brought the mill’s production capacity up to 380,000 tonnes of pulp per year.

\

The organizational ownership structure is unique to British Columbia industrial manufacturing, for a business of this scale. Harmac Pacific moved from a traditional labour model based upon the often conflicting self interests of owners, managers and labour, to a new model based upon employee ownership and common interest, focused on a commitment to the profitable operation of the business. There is still a shared focus of all owners, to maximize the profit potential of the Harmac Pacific pulp mill and its associated property and facilities. Their vision has created a business that can compete with the best in the world.

\

Employee ownership remains at 25% of the company equity. This ownership interest, combined with a flattened organizational structure, is designed to be responsive and adaptable to changing business conditions. This model has proven to be critically important in today’s global market and has contributed to the mill’s stability and growth. Encouragement of creativity, short decision-making processes and the rapid implementation of ideas has greatly improved and will continue to enhance the effectiveness and competitiveness of the operation. Based upon the profitability of the company, and the employee owners/shareholders continue to benefit through the distribution of dividends.

Question Clyptospora Testing

Trying to get tested for Clyptospora (what's causing the diarrhea outbreak in US). Got a requisition for and Oocytes and Parasite test, but upon reading what the test includes, it sound like only Giardia and Cryptosporidium are tested for unless travel, etc. Anyone in healthcare, can you verify this? And, how would I get Cyclospora testing?

With the current outbreak in the US and the fact that lots of our food comes from US/Mexico, it's definitely possible to be exposed. I know there's been no reported outbreaks here, but if testing is not part of O&P, then it's unlikely it's being tested for at all... Hence no outbreak or cases.
