Announcement Solo-dev survival-RTS test build: defend an autonomous village through five escalating eras (Win/Mac, free)

Hi! I'm Barış, a data scientist by day and lifelong strategy/souls/roguelike player. I built stration solo as a hobby project.

stration is a hard, replayable top-down medieval survival-strategy roguelike. You directly control a single hero, but your village lives on its own - you never micromanage villagers; you steer them through what you build and the policies you set, while surviving escalating raids across five eras. The only win is outlasting the final Armageddon siege.

I'd love answers to three things:

  1. Did steering the village through buildings/policies feel controllable, or opaque?
  2. Did raid escalation feel fair - did you always know why you died?
  3. Which era felt flattest, and why?

Free private test build (Windows + macOS):

https://elreniel.itch.io/stration?secret=cCSzEm42vefUgfGD61GFRZO0YQ

Solo hobby project - honest, brutal feedback very welcome. Thanks!

UPDATE: now playable free in your browser, no download needed

Identification Help please. I remember RTS game in Play Market.

It's a 2D game with a top-down view, and instead of country flags, there are just crosses like X. Game has editor and company. The company experienced World Wars I and II. The game has no economy or bases. My paint The game was developed by a Polish developer and has a forum.

Question/Help How different is total war from other RTS games and does the upcoming 40K game look like it’ll play the same as its predecessors?

Growing up I never was into RTS games, had no idea what they even were %100. As a kid I liked the halo wars trailer, bought the game and when it showed the top camera view angle I was like wtf is this and returned it lol

Fast forward to adulthood and I got into Warhammer 40K and seen den of war and total war trailers and it warmed me to the idea of giving the RTS games a chance. I don’t currently own a PC so imma just go with total war 40K since it’ll release on PS5.

Am I overthinking the difficulty of rts games and learning curves present or should I play another rts game in preparation for total war. I only have a ps5 and skimmed through and seen company of heroes 3 which is ww2 based. I like history and it does look cool, is it a good game to pick up and try before total war or will total war kinda be easy to pick up and learn. I might even go back and play other total war games once I get a pc

Identification RTS in Sci-Fi style from my childhood

Hello, I'm trying to find a game from my childhood, it was from the RTS genre, in the style of Sci-Fi, I don't remember much, I remember well that the game was in 2D, and that there was a female robot in the main menu, I can say that this game was quite old, the release date is somewhere between 90-2000, maybe even later, but definitely not 2010, that's all I remember, I would be very grateful if you can find something, I don't exclude the fact that it could have been a mod, because the game was bought on a pirated disk (I from Ukraine) , i remember some billding from this game I tried to draw them, the building on the left was a place for spawn units, and the building on the right was an air defense system that opened up and shot down air targets. (Sorry for the terrible drawings xd) https://imgur.com/a/w4kxq5R

Something that I remember:
First of all, I dont really remember that in this RTS you must to gather resources, like in CaC.
Secondly, i remember one more building, it was like a satellite dish that made holographic units, they died from one hit, but with their help you could scout the area.
Also I dont remember were there ships or floating units in the game
One more unit, Self-propelled artillery, it looked like a tank, but when it attacked, it raised its turret and fired.
Maybe its some how can help.

(Its not Total Annihilation or StarCraft)

Question/Help Any RTS games with a lot of varied units you can produce and end up in massive fights?

Stuff that's similar to a fully modded out Supreme Commander or Total Annihilation.

Balance be damned, just hundreds upon hundreds of different units to pick from.

Question/Help Is there any advantage to tweaking mouse cursor speed to lower and higher settings in RTS games? And do competitive gamers do this? What are the pros and cons of putting the settings to either extreme ends?

IF you're from the FPS world, you'd know that the best players in Counter Strike, Call of Duty, and other major names of the genre take time to tweak the in-game sensitivity's settings to their own personal play style. The TLDR definition of sensitivity is that its how quick your aiming crosshair moves as your jerk the analog stick or mouse. High sensitivity means rapid aim and quick turns to counter ambushes from your sides or at your back but very imprecise at hitting targets. Low sensitivity means vey stable aim and easy to be preicise but turning around is very slow.

Entire playstyles revolve around the specific sensitivity setting and it can make or break a team at winning a match if not even an entire tournament if one player is unable to tweak to his habitual sensitivity number before each round starts.

So I'm wondering in Real TIme Strategy does the same time apply to the speed of mouse cursor Like entrie strategies and tactics are decided by the cursor's speed and a tournament can literally by decided based on whether players could be able to tweak the mouse cursor speed settings?

Is it a standard things for competitive players to tweak cursor speeds just like in FPS with crosshair sensitivity esp at the professional level?

If this is normal just like in first person shooters, what are the advantages of moving the settings far to either extreme? Esp low mouse cursor speed? As an extremely casual player I can already see the obvious advantage of high mouse cursor speeds in giving quicker control of units and reacting quickly to whats happening across the map more efficiently. But what would playing at low cursor speeds instead give as benefits I ask?

Announcement Command and Conquer Generals remake

💥 Remaking Command & Conquer: Generals — a childhood dream finally in motion

Hey everyone,

For years, I’ve been dreaming about remaking Command & Conquer: Generals. It’s the game that got me into RTS and game development in the first place. I still remember those long nights playing LAN matches with friends, experimenting with every faction, every strategy — pure joy.

Now, after spending years in game dev working on all kinds of projects, I’ve finally decided to do something for myself — a passion project. I’m remaking Generals from scratch, and I want to share the entire journey with you.

🔨 What I’m doing

This isn’t a 1:1 remake — I’m rebuilding it from the ground up, capturing the spirit, mechanics, and feel of the original, while modernizing where it makes sense.

I’m working solo for now, handling the visuals, logic, and systems on the client side. The backend is still being implemented, so at this stage I’m focusing on getting the visual flow and UX working smoothly.

🧠 Why I’m doing it

Generals is the RTS that shaped my childhood. I've worked on many professional projects, but nothing has felt this personal. I want to bring back that feeling — not just for myself, but for anyone who loved this game.

🚀 What to expect

I’ll be posting:

  • Dev logs, progress updates, and screenshots
  • System breakdowns (AI, movement, UI, etc.)
  • Design challenges and how I solve them
  • Honest feedback loops — I’d love to hear your thoughts

If you’re a fan of RTS, C&C, or solo indie dev journeys — I’d be thrilled to have you on board. This is a passion project through and through, and your feedback will be a huge part of shaping where it goes.

Let’s bring Generals back to life — together.Remaking the RTS that defined my childhood — and I want to share the journey with you

For years, I’ve dreamed of remaking this game. I still remember those long nights playing it non-stop with friends — it brings back some of my happiest childhood memories.

I’ve worked in game dev for years on various projects, but now I want to focus on something truly personal. I love RTS games — and this one in particular means a lot to me.

The client-side part is already in progress, and I’ll be sharing updates, screenshots, and dev logs as I go. I’d love to get your feedback and thoughts throughout the process. This is more than a project — it’s a passion. Let’s bring this game back to life together.

Question/Help Northgard or Age of Mythology: Retold?

I'm a console scrub who's decided he wants to try out the RTS genre, but I'm not sure what game to start with. Northgard is currently on sale on PS5, but I hear it's small scale and slow paced compared to most RTS's. Age of Mythology: Retold is coming out on PS5 in early March. Should I go ahead and grab Northgard now or hold out for AoM?
