Those stores operate at a 2% profit margin. They are expensive because the cost of production has gone up. It has nothing to do with the store. Blame your government for overspending, allowing food production monopolies and kicking out cheap labor.

If winco has cheaper food it’s because they are getting it from a cheaper source that other stores have deemed too low of quality. So enjoy that. Safeway is cheaper if you use the app to get digital coupons and points. But they are just paying you for giving them your data.

Also it’s been shown that stores like winco are cheaper on many items because they are loss leaders. They make it up on other marked up items that you grab while you’re there. People are delusional that winco is just magically so much cheaper. They are out to make money just like every other store. And they have much less wholesale pricing leverage from distributors.

Sounds like rich folks who live on that end of the lake would rather have high prices and less traffic.

I've been waiting for this as a renton highlands resident. All of the safeway/qfc types are WAY TOO FUCKING EXPENSIVE in terms of groceries. I'd rather spend at Winco.

Maybe they could take over the Rite Aid building on Sunset. Not sure if that one has enough parking though.

They definitely could and should add more infill housing in the landing, but adding a winco (or just any grocery store not owned by Kroger or Albertsons) is absolutely a benefit to the community

There is not an over abundance of grocery stores in the area. And you know what? Fuck Kroger. If this causes them to close their shitty ass Fred Meyer and QFC stores (“and remember, if you see something, say something” —— oh yeah that thing you want is behind a glass case because we are total ass at LP) then so be it.

It’s a land use abomination. Winco is only using half the building. And there’s already an over abundance of grocery stores in the area. The massive parking lot alone there could support 100s of housing units. Renton city decided they want to be a way point instead of a nice place to live.
