What the hell do recruiters do?

I mean seriously. How is this a high stress job if a job at all? How do you hire someone to find people to do a job? A position that finds people to fill a position. And people build their careers around this?

It kind of just seems to me like a security guard. One of those pointless jobs that not many people want to do. Yet recruiters have the audacity to act like they're better than us. What the hell

Went for an interview and a few hours later I get this email

Went to an interview and it went well I thought and then a few hours later I received this email.

Hi ——,

Thank you again for taking the time to meet with us regarding the Inventory Officer position. —— and I genuinely appreciated the opportunity to get to know you and learn more about your experience.

Following our discussions with the shortlisted candidates and a broader review of the role, including market feedback and operational requirements, the business has made the decision to revisit the position before proceeding with recruitment. It has been concluded that the business is better suited to recruiting for a more junior role that more closely aligns with our current operational requirements.

As a result, we have made the difficult decision not to proceed with the current recruitment process. I do apologise for any inconvenience caused here -—-.

We appreciate the time and effort you invested throughout the process, particularly as one of our final shortlisted candidates, and we are grateful for your interest in joining —- Engineering.

We sincerely wish you every success in your future career and thank you again for considering —- Engineering as a potential employer.

I’m kinda perplexed. Literally hours after.

I built a free site tracking which employers actually reply to applicants [Mod Approved]

Like a lot of people here, I got tired of spending ages on applications and sometimes attending interviews only to hear absolutely nothing afterwards.

So I built Blanked:

blanked

Best way to test it: search for three employers you’ve applied to and report whether they replied. If an employer is missing, comment the name and I’ll add the most-requested ones. Reports are anonymous and the rankings are entirely candidate-reported.

There are no accounts, written reviews or personal details, and it’s completely free.

Reports are self-reported, and employers only enter the main rankings once enough reports have been collected. It’ll become more useful as more candidates contribute, so add a few companies if you’ve been through recruiting hell recently.

I built it myself and would genuinely appreciate blunt feedback. Thanks to the mods for approving the post.

Hopefully this helps.

I was a project manager for five years and was laid off, now lesser pain jobs are telling me my résumé makes me too overqualified to hire because they don’t want someone temporary. I haven’t had much traction from other project manager jobs either. Do I need two resumes?

I just interviewed for a job that pays $25 an hour, which is considerably less than what I’ve been making. During the interview, the person that was interviewing me told me that I seemed overqualified for this type of job. He told me that he didn’t want a temporary worker and based on my work history and past salary he’s assuming that I would be working there temporarily while searching for a better job. The job that let me go is six days a week. For context, my wife also makes more than me. So for my past job, I didn’t get to see my family very much although I did make 90K a year. I truly don’t mind taking the pay cut if it’s a place that I can work my way up and and have a better work life balance with benefits. If the lower paying jobs are afraid to interview me, and I’m not getting replies from higher paying jobs either. Would it be better for me to just have a résumé that makes me look less impressive for the lower paying jobs?

What is a “Pre Screening” interview?

I got an interview from this Job immediately after I applied. I already thought it was a little strange since thats the fasted any job had ever gotten back to me. The job is legit, it’s a store at a plaza I go to, plus I applied it on their company web.

Now today, I went to their interview and I felt pretty uncomfortable due to the way the guy talked to me. He was being extremely vague and act like he can get up and leave at any moment. This is also around the time I realized the paperwork he was holding wasn‘t my resume at all, but instead it was an applicant check list.

The thing is I’ve been to multiple interviews at this point. Each and every one of them all have my resume printed beforehand and has took at least a 30% glance at it. This guy didn’t even know my name even thought he’s the one that called me to schedule an interview for the next day.

After the interview, he basically told me this wasn’t an official interview but instead it was a “pre-screening” interview. He explained how it “puts a face” for the applicants before an official interview. What does that even mean? I honestly felt like I wasted my time because I’m here for an interview not some verify I’m a real person process.

Dumbed down retail resume?

Has anyone here tried creating an alternate résumé where you basically don’t listen to things you’ve done over the last 30 years. Any of your professional accomplishments certification, college degree etc.?

And created a completely bogus résumé with 30 years of bullshit retail/warehouse/door greeter work so you don’t appear “overqualified”

Oh, and dyed your hair and started listening to Taylor Swift?

Was I Wrong to Skip an Interview for a Role I Never Applied For ?

Hello, I need guidance and your thoughts on the situation I'm facing right now.

I am a 2026 B.Com graduate. I also appeared for the MBA entrance exam and scored 90 percentile. It's an average percentile, so I most likely won't get into a top teir college. Because of that, I started looking for corporate jobs.

I applied for a job on LinkedIn at a well-known MNC. The role was Record to Report Operations – New Associate, specifically for freshers. However, I received an interview call for a Content Moderation role instead.

I emailed the company asking whether the original role had been closed and whether they had shifted my application to the Content Moderation position. However, I never received any response.

The main reason I didn't attend the interview was that I want to build a career in finance (although I'm completely clueless about whether that was the right decision). The second reason was that I didn't like the job description of the Content Moderation role.

A few days later, I received a connection request on LinkedIn from someone working at the same company in the Content Moderation/Cybersecurity department. He first messaged me saying that they had a job opening and asked me to send my resume. Later, he asked me to call him. I asked whether the role was related to finance, and he said yes, so I called him.

After asking me a few basic questions, he asked whether I had applied for any other roles in the company. I told him about the entire incident mentioned above.

He then said that there was some issue with LinkedIn or the company's job postings, and that the Record to Report role kept appearing even though they didn't actually have any openings for it. He also asked why I hadn't attended the interview. According to him, I should have attended because the job market is already bad, and I had missed an opportunity. He further told me that because I didn't attend the interview, I wouldn't be able to apply for any other positions at the company for one year.

He also suggested that I should not pursue an MBA because, according to him, it wouldn't help me get better opportunities given the current job market. Instead, he recommended a few other companies where I could apply. He also guided me on how to apply and said that he could help me with referrals if possible.

I asked him how he had found my profile and sent me a connection request, and whether he already knew that I had applied for that role. He replied that he randomly sends connection requests to freshers. However, deep down, I feel that he already knew I had applied for that role, which is why he contacted me.

Then, after 10–15 days, I again received an email inviting me to interview for the same Content Moderation role. This time, I simply ignored it. Yesterday, I also received a call from the same person. Coincidentally, I missed the call and didn't call him back. I don't know what he wanted to discuss.

I want your opinion on the following:

  1. Did I make the right or wrong decision by not attending the interview?
  2. I feel it is unethical to advertise one job role and then invite candidates to interview for a completely different role. Am I justified in feeling this way?
  3. My parents and my mentor have advised me to pursue an MBA, so for now, I am planning to stick with that decision. What are your thoughts?

Automated rejection email after 4 rounds of interviews…

Husband was interviewing for a company and was on his 4th interview which went well, and was heavily implied that he would move on to the 5th round (7 rounds of interviews, pretty ridiculous). They’ve been slow as hell at communicating for next steps and such but my hubby’s been professional and following up. So a week after the last interview, he gets an automated no-reply rejection email. No explanation, no name attached. It just seems absolutely insane to me that after meeting so many people at this company, investing so many hours of preparation, that they would just send a generic ass email to inform him of this, and at least not a direct email if they don’t want to call him. The whole interviewing process took more than 6 weeks. Is this normal?!

Am I Getting Ghosted After all Interview Rounds?

Upvotes

I recently got approached by a recruiter about a quantitative investment analyst position. This happened as I in parallel interviewing somewhere else (still currently employed).

I had a great call with that recruiter. He put me to the tech lead. Then went to their office and met the managing director, then the CIO.

They scheduled a case study with me later in the week. Stayed in the office for 4 hours. Met another CIO of a different division. Gave my presentation, and they told me that I was the leading horse (told me it was between me and one other candidate) and that I would hear back by Wednesday (today) the latest.

Well, it’s almost EOD Wednesday so I called the recruiter, he didn’t pick up, and emailed him, no response. I’m pretty frustrated after giving this so much effort and time (used PTO for the interview) and now I feel like I’m getting ghosted.

I definitely didn’t perform perfect in the case study, but I made it very clear I know how to problem solve and have the tech skills needed for the job.

Anyone else with a similar experience? Any hopium for me to inhale or some hard truths telling me I’m cooked are both appreciated

How effective are the "Open to Work" badge and Networking on Linkedin?

Upvotes

More or less anti-social media aside from some communities on reddit (obviously), but I'm really trying to find a new opportunity by end of year. I HATE using Linkedin and my only colleagues are college friends and a few coworkers from a job 7 years ago.

I know it may be my only shot to expand but my network is really limited. I also hate the pity feeling of basically looking desperate for work.

Has it helped for you? How simple if your profile?

Fundamental Issue with the Application Process

There's a lot of discourse right now about why the job market is so bad and I think there are a lot of variables at play. But one thing stands out to me is the volume of job postings that no one is actually working on the back end. That's a huge part of why people are sending out hundreds, even thousands, of applications and getting response rates under 1%.

Spend enough time on LinkedIn and you'll notice the same listings continuously "reposted". There's no way to tell if a posting has been reposted monthly for the past year, weekly for the past two, or if the role was already filled and the company just never bothered to take it down. Jobs that have been up for months appear at the top of your feed on a daily basis because LinkedIn automatically reposts the role. It's insanity.

And why would they? From a company's perspective, there's little incentive to close a posting. Leaving it up means a steady stream of applications keep rolling in, and it also signals growth at a time when everyone else is undergoing layoffs. It costs them nothing to look like they're hiring even when they're not.

So is there really no way to hold companies accountable for phantom listings? Right now, companies/recruiters face zero accountability in the hiring process, while an entire pool of candidates keeps applying to jobs that, in practice, don't even exist.

Thoughts? What could fix this issue?

I just offered a job that basically fits my requirements, I called the recruiter and it was a young Asian woman. She was kinda stuttering with her info, and told me the following.

Hourly Pay: 27$/hr
Work hours: 8 hours 5 day weeks
Job type: Contract 12 months with Apple

It seems to good to be true but I need some feedback. Does this seem legit, or does it seem like a scam?

From the applicant:

I applied for a private chef position through a recruitment agency yesterday and this was the response I received from them.

Side note: I am a qualified chef as well as a qualified teacher but even if I wasn’t qualified is this how you respond to potential candidates? I so badly want to name and shame

Swallowed my pride and took a dog walker job. Fired on the first day.

Edit: I wrote this because I feel genuinely hopeless, and have considered suicide. The fact that so many people read this and found a way to interpret it as "This guy doesn't think his shit stinks" is, in fact, insane. If you can read this and, in good faith, suggest I am in any way refusing to self-evaluate, then you cannot read. I have made it very clear that the criticisms I have been given are either NONE, or outright lies. To suggest I'm not being open to feedback when I am not being given feedback just indicates to me that you do not believe in the suffering of other people whatsoever. I cannot fix that. I am muting my replies. I hope you find peace.

I apply to roughly 1000 jobs a year. I rarely get more than 5 interviews a year. The only jobs that hire me are jobs that don't look at my resume at all. The jobs I'm most qualified for are often not even replying.

I need something while I keep looking, and stuff like Wal-Mart and fast food don't even reply (overqualified? who fucking knows). I applied to a dog sitter / dog walker agency, interviewed, passed their tests, and was hired.

On the first day of shadowing, I mostly kept my hands to myself and didn't do anything I wasn't asked to do. I answered questions when I was asked, and asked questions of my own. I had no reason to believe I was still being evaluated--I'd already been offered the job.

Turns out the employee I was shadowing was the co-founder of the company. I didn't know this, so when he asked if I had previous experience dog sitting, I said no. I hadn't lied about that previously. No reason to lie now. When he asked why I wanted to be a dog sitter, I said I have struggled to find work in my field, and am trying to remain employed. This seemed like something I would enjoy without having to compromise my morals (I mentioned I used to work as a prison guard and hated it).

Before I left, he told me I'd dressed professionally, and I'd been on time. He told me he looked forward to seeing me at the next shadowing session.

Fifteen minutes later, I received an email saying that they'd decided this wasn't the right fit for me, and that they were canceling my other shadowing visits.

When I asked why, they said it was because I "didn't pet the dogs at all, even the one that was most interested" in me.

- I had not been told I was still being evaluated.

- I had been told I was shadowing. Every time I've gotten involved while shadowing, I've been scolded. That's not what you do when you're shadowing.

- Still, I did everything I was told when I was told to do it.

- And just to make matters worse, I DID PET THE DOGS. I was also the only one playing with them after the employee I shadowed threw a ball for them roughly twice. This was just a lie to cover up the real reason.

What was the real reason? Who knows. My bet is the usual. "Sometimes I doubt your commitment to Sparkle Motion" I didn't know I was still being interviewed, so I didn't lie and say "God, I've just always wanted to be a dog walker."

Plus, I'm nearly forty. The moment the 20-something co-founder saw me, he reacted as if he'd seen a ghost. I'm not 100% sure that has anything to do with it, but considering the reason for terminating me was an outright lie, I can't help but assume the real reason isn't something they'd want people knowing.

So that brings my total work experience to:

- Went to college to be a teacher.

- Looked for teaching jobs for 3 years without finding one

- Nearly fell for an insurance salesman scam

- Finally found a teaching job and was fired after 3 years without cause

- Worked as a pharmacy tech in a hospital during covid and was the scapegoat for other peoples' mistakes

- Got a remote job that I loved, worked there for several years, and was eventually terminated for [coerced into signing an NDA and non disparagement to get my severance]

- Couldn't find work and worked as a prison guard until I was hazed and left

- Can't even keep a job as a dog walker without being fired on the spot for whatever lies the co-founder decides to make up

Kill me

Edit: I'm a former 8th grade English teacher. I taught critical thinking, evaluation skills, etcetera. So if you think you're helping me by suggesting I consider I might be the problem, I'm way ahead of you.

I'm sorry that you read my story as in any way arrogant or narcissistic, but I have absolutely self evaluated every step of the way. I am trying to learn from my mistakes and improve as a person.

But if you missed the part that I am repeatedly receiving either NO feedback, or FALSE feedback, and you're going to try and tell me I'm the problem, you're simply being cruel, and I won't be engaging with you further in the comments.

I am sorry the world has left you so jaded that your kneejerk reaction is to assume I'm not telling the whole truth.

Additional Edit: I am not diagnosed autistic, but I am diagnosed ADHD. The ADHD medication appears to have accelerated the autism symptoms, as others will tell you sometimes happens. But if I failed some subtle social contract--that's totally fine. Just... tell me. If I ask for honest feedback, tell me. I'll improve. Don't make up a lie about me not petting the dogs.
