Mod post: User flair, Rule 1

User flair is available in the sub, however we've decided to make the "highest level", PhD* & Professor available only as granted on request & verification. Please contact the mods for these. It would be desirable that postdocs use the flair, it should improve the signal-to-noise ratio on the sub.

Rule 1 has been updated to make explicit its practical application: discussion and referral to interpretations is ALLOWED in comments. However, we're not encouraging discussions of the "my interpretation is better than yours" -kind, and comments indulging in it may still be removed. Thankfully, there hasn't been a lot of that going on for some time (years) now. The point is to acknowledge the role of interpretations in "foundational" matters, and also that interpretations are often the approach angle for non-professionals. For posts solely about interpretations, try r/quantuminterpretation instead.

When an answer or a comment focuses or depends on a specific interpretation, it is desirable to make this explicit.

Looking for a potential mentor in Quantum sensing research project

I am from Toronto, Canada, grade 10 highschooler going into grade 11. I'm very quantum-oriented, interested in conducting research in quantum sensing and spin squeezing. Recently, I did an inperson course at Harvard for quantum mechanics. Would anyone here (grad students or above) be willing to review my independent research for ISEF periodically (once a month) and work with me as a mentor? Discussion Shower thought: You cannot really understand QM without math and we seem to encourage enthusiasts to try anyway.

One pattern I've noticed among enthusiasts is that they're really excited about QM but lack the time and/or math to actually learn it. There's no shame in this, but some people in the physics community say that real learning can be done by working with concepts only. This is good in principle, but I'm unconvinced that it actually works. In order to teach with concepts only, you have to move from the domain of math (the only actual domain we understand QM in—see foundations for more on that) and move into the domain of metaphor and allegory. This carries a great deal of risk for the student. I've found that beginners who are interested in this conceptual domain often internalize QM in this language of metaphors and get it slightly (or very) wrong. They can become confident in an understanding that is seemingly correct at the surface but horribly wrong when probed for actual understanding. This may do more harm than good.

That's not to say the correct response to curious beginners is to shut down their interest. That would not be ideal at all. But I would say it's important to emphasize that the no-math conceptual approach is no substitute for mathematical experience and that they cannot hope to actually understand QM until they've done the math. The standard beginner concepts serve as enticing slivers of the actual pie that do very little by themselves but might beckon the student a step further into the quantum world.

I would say that, in my experience, conceptual learning only begins to reveal the shape of understanding once a student is comfortable with linear algebra—particularly vector spaces. You do not need to solve the TDSE to be able to understand, but you need some way to grasp that English is the map and math is the territory. There is no deeper territory beneath that as there is for classical physics. (By territory I mean what a physicist means when they say they understand QM).

I understand that this is essentially calling for more gatekeeping, but I don't think it is without good cause. Gatekeeping is not a position I have deep conviction for, but more of a hypothesis I wanted to get some thoughts on from physicists beyond myself. What do you guys think?

Question Quantum computing. Quantum simulation.

If quantum computers are going to be as powerful as they're described. How likely is it that one could simulate a universe? Is that something that is achievable with a quantum computer or am I missing the point? Would they require more power than a binary computer to simulate or are they more efficient? Discussion Quantum intros make more sense when u deal with the problem first.

Ive always had problem understanding the intros. Like... They be jumping straight into quibits, gates, circuit language and shiz like that. Whithout even explaining what classical approaches run into.

Without problem first... Notations feel like some other worldly vocabulary.

So ive been like... Searching better sources. That build the knowledge from root to branch. I tried phenom,seekout,hirez etc...but i think 8-fold . io stood out the most. People organise source paths around one subject in here. So its kinda hassle free. It helped bcz it started from the limits and worked forward. For me atleast.

Any other suggestions ? Or similar experiences ?

Question Postgraduate options for a computer science bachelor to begin quantum computing journey

So I have 2 months to graduate from my Computer Science Bachelor's, and I am looking forward to becoming a quantum computing scientist. I am not sure what postgraduate degree I should pursue. I am currently focusing on a great opportunity to study at Oxford, and these 2 programmes caught my eye: MSc in Quantum Technologies and a DPhil in Atomic and Laser Physics.

Are these choices reasonable for someone like me ? And for the DPhil, can apply to it given that I don't have a physics background ? And overall, what postgraduate degrees should I consider to take to achieve my goal.

Question Learning Quantum mechanics without enough prerequisite subjects

I am trying to learn Quantum Mechanics I from MIT OCW, (8.04, 2013 spring) but I'm needing to go back and learn the places I'm missing.

I've taken Calculus 1 2 3 classes and Physics 1 (Newtonian mechanics), Physics 2 (Electromagnetism). I believe I need to go with OCW 8.03 first but i dont like it. I talked with gemini and i was told to learn it just in time, learning required concepts as i go.

How would you recommend Quantum Mechanics I in this context?

Question How did scientists put a tiny lump of metal in two places at once?

I have been trying to wrap my head around the Scientists put a tiny lump of metal in two places at once in record-breaking quantum experiment article for a couple of days now. It is honestly over my head.

I get lost on this paragraph:

To perform the experiment, the researchers created ultracold sodium clusters containing between 5,000 and 10,000 atoms. The particles then traveled through three diffraction gratings generated by ultraviolet laser beams.

If possible can someone provide a simpler explanation of the experiment and how and why it worked.
