I'm pretty happy with how they came out. Background colors are a little dark and there are some spots I want to clean up, but overall it went way smoother than I anticipated. Caligo Safe Wash Ink on Hosho Paper.

Last year, I decided to really give linocut a go. I'd dabbled with it on a few occasions years ago whilst in college, and I still had a cheap little linocut kit lying around. So that was it - one 2 inch easycarve block per day for the whole of october. At the end of the month, I put my favourites together and voila!

This print (and all of the little ones leading up to it) taught me so much in a very short space of time.

For one, essdee linocut tools are not for me *at all*. My hands hurt. The blades weren't sharp enough, and neither were they small enough for the details I wanted to carve.

Two, pink blocks are convenient to carve but they are far too squishy. It was just too easy to over-press them and lose the details, and carving small details would make the block bend away from the blade and (instead of cutting) it would tear and stretch.​

Three, water-based inks are hard to use well - I did get the hang of it, and I think I managed a pretty clean set of prints in the end, but the drying time either means your ink gets all thick and stodgy, or you have to constantly wash and dry the block if you want to print more than a few. It was SO stressful to run around and race the drying time!

And last of all, I learnt just how much I love linoprint. I've carried on with it and upgraded my materials along the way, and it makes such a big difference, but this edition still means a whole lot to me.

Silk screen I did a number of years ago

I’ve been using the Speedball water based ink for a while now. I do most of my printing in my garage, and it’s mad hot in Oklahoma right now, so my ink tends to try up pretty quick.

Most of the time my solution is to dip my paint scraper in water, then scrape and mix the drying ink. Sometimes I add more ink to it.

Either way I just feel like I’m wasting a ton of ink. And if I’m trying to do a big run of prints using a very specific custom mixed color it can get frustrating.

How to you keep your water based ink from drying out too quickly?

This was my 2nd caricature art attempt on linocut printmaking.

Before i start it, i used Mod Podge photo transfer and let it dry overnight.

My husband loves the crows that come visit us in our yard. He always has a treat for them. We were able to catch a few great shots of them landing and taking off. The wing spread is so beautiful! I made two linocuts from these images and used them to make this print. The chop is the Japanese symbol for the word "Crow"

made these for a weekly radio show I had with a friend. They all begin as ink pen drawings and india ink shading, then scanned and bitmapped. Colors are separated then a laser engraver puts them onto blocks.

Totally forgot I carved this lino block so printed it in a velvety black with a gold sun… came out ok as a test print! Need to tidy up a few bits but it’s ok! Just wish I could remember the bird species originally sketched!

New to linocut here 🙋🏻‍♀️ My local art store only sells Essdee and Speedball inks so I bought Essdee as it’s more affordable.

Had no issue with the inks in its basic 5-colour box set, but I was really struggling with the standalone Green ink I bought.

It was really sticky right out of the tube, and when I tried to roll on thin layers on my block, wait a while and add another layer, the layers ended up crackling on my block. It got worse as it dried on paper.

I printed these 2 months ago and when I took a look today, the green ones have all turned moldy. Other colours I printed at the same time did not. I hung all up to dry for more than a week.

Can I find out if these problems are due to my lack of skill, or has anyone encountered a bad tube of ink? 😭 Thanks in advance.

I've always wanted to try this as I get through so many tetrapaks and love the idea of re-using them for art. I did a small test plate with some random marks first, then did this strawberry. I don't have any equipment so just pressed with a spoon, and I don't think the ink I have is very good quality, but I'm excited to try more! Any advice welcome.

I found this in a book at the library while doing some visual research (sadly I didn’t note the name of the book in my flurry of scanning) and I’m really curious about the designs on the right page. Since it would seem they were made in the 70s or earlier, I’m wondering if anyone has a guess as to how they might have been created prior to digital/computer-based design tools? There’s obviously some intended misregistration of colors/layering going on (they look like they could be screenprints), but it would seem that they first took a graphic and refracted or distorted it somehow? Maybe captured through a photographic or emulsion process? I would love to experiment with analogue methods to get a similar graphic result, or even just figure out new ways to play around with imagery outside of a computer screen. I’m also just interested to learn a little more about interesting/experimental image-making processes that pre-date the digital which could then be translated into something like a screenprint. I understand that this post might have more to do with bygone graphic design/print production processes and tools rather than straightforward printmaking, but either way I would love to soak up any of your knowledge on the subject and would be very excited to check out any books you might recommend.

In Spring 2026, during my final semester of college, I took a screenprinting course as part of my second major in art. Up until then, I had mostly focused on drawing and painting since those were the mediums I had been familiar with my whole life. Screenprinting was a completely new, hands-on experience that challenged me creatively and gave me a new appreciation for the printmaking process.

I've included a photo of me in the printmaking lab, along with some of the screenprints I made throughout the semester, including a few designs I printed onto T-shirts. It was one of the most memorable classes I took, and I'm excited to share some of the work I created.

I printed this about three weeks ago and everything was fine (printing wise, there are a few things I'd do differently with the print - but that's besides the point really). I opened my sketchbook today and the ink has gone blotchy.

This has affected all the prints, although the location and extent of the blotchiness varies print to print.

The blue is a mix of Cranfield traditional cobalt blue and safe wash opaque white (should be fine as they're both oil based and their own material says you can mix). The paper is Hosho. It was allowed to dry for about a week, I then taped it into my sketchbook / popped other prints in a drawer. I don't believe it's overinked (I've done a fair bit of printing and never had this issue before).

Does anyone know what might have caused this or have an idea how I can remedy it?
