On Friday as I came home from work, I saw a pigeon nestled on a garden wall.

He caught my attention because he had several rings on his legs and he was very calmly looking at me.

I stopped. Gave the little guy a visual once over and realised he had a bad wound on his neck/chest area. The blood was dry and the chest was scabbed.

He was on my street so I went home, dumped my bags and went back to get him. While doing so I called 2 local bird rescues and got a recorded message and left my details. I also contacted via facebook a local pigeon rescue.

I did get a reply via facebook and the person said they could collect him on Saturday. They never came. The other organisations never responded.

I spent 3 days feeding and watering the bird who seemed happy and alert but unable to fly. I set him a box up in a pet carrier in the shed. We kept him locked in at night and brought him into the garden (though still in the box) at day. I was just hoping someone came to help it.

Today I got back from work and could tell something had changed. He seemed less mobile and hadn’t eaten. I realised I was out of my depth and called my vet.

We dropped him off and immediately had no right to his care as his rings showed ownership. I have been advised that the owners will choose euthanasia over treatment as he is no longer able to carry out his purpose.

I would never want him to suffer but was prepared to give him a chance. What would be the best course of action if I had to go through this situation again?

I never liked birds but I’d grown quite attached to it.

This asshole despises pigeons and has now successfully forbidden people from feeding them. A couple of months ago he wanted to poison all pigeons in the compound but we managed to keep him from doing it for now. They are hell bent on convincing people that pigeons are dangerous to children's health.

Hi, I have had pigeons visit my terrace for a while now and it's been fine. Other than a few, they mostly slept elsewhere. Recently more decided to sleep on the terrace. They used to mainly sleep on the ledges of neighboring terraces. I'm not sure what changed but there are now too many. (I think a lot of new young ones were born elsewhere and the older ones said, hey, come over here!) I have a family member coming to visit this coming week and I need there to be less of them. They start congregating before it gets dark. I hate to be like the people we don't like who try to get rid of pigeons too often but in this world it can lead to problems with neighbors and in this situation. Even if I can get them to leave temporarily *for a few days* ... Is there a way? There are two squeakers also. I think for some reason this time of year there are more and maybe as it gets colder they move to ledges. Has anyone had to do this and do you have tips? Thanks. (I hate to give advice to people who don't like them. But I need help.)

I recently started working on a short documentary project about how unscientific the current stigma is around pigeons.

In my city, the stigma is so bad, a city councillor is hosting an ANTI-Pigeon "Photo-contest" where she asks "pooparazzi" to document the negative effects of pigeons for an "education campaign." This unethical, unscientific contest has rightfully sparked an outrage among the people who put in their time to care for pigeons, which are abandoned domestic creatures.

I would like to explore ethical scientific solutions, as I think they exist.

I read that in Germany public dovecotes have a 80% success rate at drawing pigeons and their poop away from public and private buildings where they aren't wanted, and they act as beautiful meditation spaces for the people who do enjoy the birds.

I would love to interview a couple folks who have either studied the history of dovecotes, or know about how the newer modern, public spaces for pigeons are managed.

My question: as you can see fledgings which is new third flocks, pigeons you see on rail are adults, some from first and second flocks since I first came here. Are these “parents” on rail watching over fledgings as my new third flocks? If so, so far I haven’t had any attacks from them, but at same time it’s impossible not to be their parents or they would have attacked me right there by fledglings, right?

i was about an hour and a half away (by train) from my place yesterday, and saw a pigeon with string tightly wrapped around its leg. it was obviously hurt (it barely moved, and when it did, it had an obvious limp). i called a wildlife rescue hotline, but they didn't get back to me until this morning. i was out with my girlfriend and it's been really hot out, so we had no way of containing the pigeon (no sweater or piece of fabric to help grab the pigeon).

the wildlife hotline called me back and asked if i could go back and see if it's still there. i obviously want to do that, but i have work for the next three days and won't be able to make the trek down there. i will go when i can, but im not sure if the pigeon will still be there. it's in the city, and i saw it fly away once or twice but come back to the area i was sitting. will it still be in the area if i return ?

hi! this pigeon fell off the roof earlier while either learning to fly or leaving the nest. It has no feathers on its head or neck and it’s definitely a juvenile of sorts. it has been sittting there for an hour and a half now and i am wondering if this is normal or if I should call a wildlife service. pigeon people help me out. it’s name is Andrew

Well, this pigeon was born a week ago I think, and I don't know if its safe to hold pigeons in this way, if it isn't, sorry for holding them like this

The same pigeon I posted about yesterday. A safewings.ca volunteer came this morning to assess the pigeon. She does think it's still a baby, and likely crash landed. She has taken the pigeon home with her, and will seek advice on the foot after cleaning the bird up. Then a decision will be made about his care, either the bird will be taken to the Wild Bird Centre for care or it will recover back here, but with a better set up, or at the volunteers place. I took this picture so everyone could see his poorly foot. Thank you to everyone here at r/pigeons for you help, the compassion shown here was refreshing!!
