Can someone ELI5 why the leak of the paper is significant, what it is, and why it is causing so much distress.

I am vaguely familiar with the Indian education system but ours is very different.

It’s like the questions for the SAT/MCAT were leaked. So some students who were rich or had connections got the questions ahead of time allowing them to get higher scores which puts them ahead of the line for medical school admissions. The students are upset by the unfairness

Student's protest is still going on and growing, thousands of students gathered to demand the resignation of India's Education Minister because a very important NEET medical entrance examination paper had been leaked. The leak contributed to widespread distress among students, with reports saying that more than 20 students died by suicide in its aftermath. A very famous education reformer and scientist Sonam Wangchuk began a hunger strike, calling for the resignation of the Education Minister. Hundreds of Gen Z students joined him in support of the movement. On the 19th day of his hunger strike, the Delhi Police forcibly removed him from the protest site. On 20 July, thousands of people took to the streets to protest what they described as the government's ignorance and lack of accountability, and these images are from 22nd July. The crowd of student is spread across 4-5km radius around New Delhi, Delhi Govt has blocked 16 metro stations near the Protest site.

This one single exam decides if you will get a good medical UG college or not and students study for it for years and this year it got leaked and now they have to give this exam again next year, which is frustrating and a waste of time, Hence the protest

OK. So the contents of the exam leaked before they sat for it, and they education minister has no provision for an alternate exam leaving the students stuck until the exam is given again next year.

No the re exams were taken. But thats not the whole context. The paper leaks have been happening for a while. And its a very stressful exam. So it has a huge toll on the students. Some students have been trying to clear this exam for years, and for them to know their efforts were in vain is quite a hard pill to seallow. Many students klld themselves cause of it. Even before this, there was an issue with the paper correction and marks for the highschool graduation exams with students not getting low scores fue to a system error and people (mainly students) eho spoke against it were even called anti-nationals(but thats a seperate issue).People just asked for the education minister to be changed and and someone more competent take charge but the govts indifference is turning the protest into does the govt even care, and if they dont, should they be in power. Govt also use violence to disperse peaceful protesters.

Is it incompetence in the education ministry, or graft? Are they failing to protect the tests to the detriment of poorer students or are they actively selling the tests to those who can pay?

There was a re exam and while that did happen.. I don't think it could've brought back the 20+ students who died.

Plus this isn't a one time thing, there have been 150+ govt exam leaks in the past 12 years

I lived and taught in China for a stint. The Chinese GAOKAO is the relative equivalent to the Indian NEET. China obscures so much information from a reporting standpoint regarding suicide, however, at least 1 study showed that the GAOKAO stress resulted in contributions to 93% of high-school students death by suicide.

I was only vaugely aware of the rising NEET issues in India.

But, when you have 2 societies (China/India) that are over a billion people, and you've been told since you were old enough to comprehend, that this is "your only ticket out," its more easy to understand the absolute devastation the young Indian populace feels, if after all the stress/angst/fear, they are asked: "ok, sorry. But we gotta do this again because we weren't really paying attention properly!!"
