Is 3D Photogrammetry considered a type of 3D Scanning?

I having debate with some friend saying 3D Scan and Photogrammetry is not two different things, in Photogrammetry there is no scanning happen, just photos and software reconstruction, he refute saying Photogrammetry is actually type of passive 3D Scanning.

Is he true or did I having wrong understanding all these time?

Building my photogrammetry PC: RTX 5070 Ti or 5080?

Hello everyone. Agisoft killed my laptop because I was reckless. I'm building a desktop PC and gosh, stuff is super expensive. Right now I'm choosing a graphics card and I'm divided between the RTX 5070 Ti (±1,300 USD) and the RTX 5080 (±1,700). I've read the 5080 performs 15-20% better; and gemini agrees. I'm wondering, has anyone used both? do you think it's worth it the 400 usd difference? I mostly work Agisoft Metashape with complex structures.

What is worse for processing: variable focal length or capture distance?

I want some to add extra close-ups to resolve more detail on my scanned object processed on Metashape. How should I go about doing it? Zoom in while maintaining my capture distance, or use the same focal length as other images and bring the camera closer to the object?

Best Metashape Alternative for Historical Aerial Photogrammetry with GCP Workflow?

I’m creating 3D point clouds from historical aerial imagery and have been using the Agisoft Metashape trial. Unfortunately, due to licensing/procurement issues at my university, I can’t get the full version approved.

I’ve tried VisualSFM, but the UI feels quite outdated, and the workflow is not very user-friendly.

What I really like about Metashape is its GCP workflow. Since my historical images lack EXIF/GPS metadata, I import GCPs from a TXT file. After marking a GCP in just a couple of images, Metashape automatically detects it in other images and shows individual reprojection errors, making it easy to identify and remove bad GCP observations.

Can anyone recommend a good alternative (open-source or commercial) that offers a similar GCP workflow and works well with historical aerial photographs?

HELP

Sorry in advance this is all very new to me. I work on a 10,000 acre mountain ranch and I would like to turn that into a 3D model like my own Google Earth but just of the ranch itself with features I can go in and edit or add a structure or pond to be able to see how it would look and or fit in certain locations to help with future development etc. Is there anything like that out there? Can anybody help me with this that has experience in outdoor mapping etc.??

Technical Literature on Photogrammetry using desktop programs VS iPhones?

Lidar-based photogrammetry with iPhone has gotten so good in recent years. Is there a comparison anywhere on whether it still makes sense to pursue a more time-consuming workflow using a dedicated camera (DSLR or MILC) with Metashape/Reality Capture to scan objects? I can see the potential flexibility of a desktop workflow but it seems so slow compared to something like Abound (formerly Metascan).

I Turned a Real Castle into a VR Video Game

Hello, I tried to scan an entire castle. I'm fairly happy with the result but I still had some alignment issues. Maybe next time I should use drone markers?

For rendering I calculated a gaussian splat. I hope soon this becomes soo optimized that a it's possible to handle way more gaussians at the same time. :D

SUGGEST MODEL FOR PHOTOGRAMMETRY

I am trying to find a model that allows me to generate realistic 3d glb models from the pictures I upload to it.

- I am using it for food , so the quality needs to be good
- It should be able to distinguish the different textures and different grains from the pictures
- should accept multiple pictures ( 35 - 50 )

Previously, I have tried KIRI engine but the quality is not as good. I also tried hyper3d from rodin but it only allows 5 images, and since it is a generative model it is not able to distinguish between the different segments of a dish. I have attached the picture of the model that was generated by Hyper 3d , as you can see it is all messy and combined in a big flop

So kindly recommend me some good model , paid one will work too

Scanning Suggestions for Server Rooms

My goal is to be able to scan the server/IT rooms of some buildings that include details such as equipment, cables, physical labels, etc.

I've got some experience using Agisoft Metashape for more fun projects, but they didn't really need to rely on accuracy or fidelity. I've seen a variety of options to do this, from two GoPros in tandem with a light, to much more expensive and professional devices.

I'm not looking to spend a lot of money (subjective I know) on hardware, but I obviously know the more you spend the better results.

So TLDR the questions are:

What is better for capturing a room in decent detail, LIDAR or Photogrammetry? This includes mesh and texture quality.

What is a reasonably priced or realistic set up to accomplish this?

Is Metashape, Reality Scan, or some other program better to use?

my gear: Sony A7RV, Tamron 17-50mm + CPL filter + Hoya 4x macro filter, 2 generic bright LEDs, Manfrotto tripod

my workflow:

camera settings: f20, ISO 200, 1/400 s WB set for natural colour under my less than ideal LEDs, outputting to raw

capture a grid of images over surface of object, similar to landscape capture using a drone, or 3 loops at different heights / angles if object is not very flat

raws into Lightroom: slight manual luminance and medium/high colour noise reductions, slight highlight reduction, slight shadow boost, lens distortion correction, chromatic aberration removal, export to jpegs with best compression settings

RealityScan (RealityCapture): mesh with normal/high detail, simplify to ~3m tris, unwrap using maximal texture count, calculate texture, export FBX with embedded textures, to single sheet disabled

FBX into Blender for rendering: using Cycles, Diffuse Direct and Indirect Bounces set to 0, Orthographic camera directly above subject, Sun light with Cast Shadow disabled and an Angle/Size of ~70°, rotate light very low/ almost perpendicular to subject surface

render Diffuse Colour pass for plain albedo

render Diffuse Direct pass for mesh surface detail

for height range, render Combined pass, set material as follows: Texture Coordinate “generated” vector into Mapping, Mapping vector into vector of Gradient Texture, adjust Scale and Location in Mapping until gradient start and end fit mesh tightly, Factor from Gradient Texture into Color Ramp set blue -> green -> red with blend mode Ease, Image from Color Ramp into Colour of Diffuse BSDF with Roughness set to 1

Boolean-ing a single-surface photogrammetry scan onto a base for printin

I've scanned some granite holds from an outdoor climbing project using RealityScan, and I want to print replicas on my X1 Carbon to make moulds from.

The problem: the scans come out as a single open surface — just the face of the rock, no thickness and no back/base (for want of a better description). I've been importing into Blender and trying to use a boolean to attach the scan to a "plinth" so it becomes a solid, printable object, but I can't get it to work for the life of me.

Can anyone point me to a decent tutorial, or walk me through the workflow? Any help appreciated.

PBR Scanner (v5) Hardware Reveal

We shared footage of our scanner recording some time ago (see here), and today we are finally revealing the new v05 scanner hardware which made the actual recording (see slow-motion video above).

The reflection computation (for extracting the optical properties of the surface) is still being developed, so I still can not share an example scan just yet 🫣. Hopefully I will have some results to share in about a few weeks.

Since many people asked to see the output, we thought we would open a submission where any 3D artist can request a free scan of their material through our Discord server: https://discord.gg/eMN96WkUvx (look for the #material-scan-requests channel).

Of course, if you would only like to see any example, I will share one as soon as the reconstruction software is complete.

I've been a bit quiet lately because I've been working on something pretty exciting. And finally, I can show it. After months of work, I can finally share the machine I've been having way too much fun using.

I've teamed up with Johnny and Jim from Hagglethorn Hollow Hobbies, and together we're working on Hagglethorn Hollow: Evermaze — a printable campaign coming to Gamefound.

This is a look behind the scenes at the technology that goes into transforming physical fantasy terrain into highly detailed digital and printable assets.

What you're seeing isn't a simple 3D scanner sitting on a desk.

The entire system is built around a custom motion-control rig weighing well over half a ton. That mass isn't there to look impressive — it exists to eliminate even the smallest vibrations. When you're capturing details measured in microns, tiny movements matter.

Instead of moving the sculpture, the rig moves on a custom-built rails while I control every axis from the workstation. Combined with an automated turntable.

The lighting is just as important as the cameras. A 34-light individually controlled cross-polarized array eliminates specular reflections, allowing the cameras to capture only the true diffuse colour and surface information.

The result is clean, consistent data that's ideal for reconstructing both geometry and texture.

Depending on the size of the sculpt, a finished scan can range from around 100 million to well over 1 billion polygons.

For this project, I've scanned more than 200 individual sculptures, refining a workflow that delivers consistent results whether I'm scanning a tiny doorway or an entire building.

The raw scans contain an extraordinary amount of information. During testing, I was even able to reproduce a sculptor's fingerprint in a resin print.

Tiny scratches, microscopic dust particles (which look like small rocks in close-up), and even the occasional strand of cobweb become part of the scan.

From there, the challenge isn't changing the sculpt — it's making it practical. The master scan is carefully reduced to a polygon count that people can realistically download, open on a normal computer, and print, while preserving as much of the original geometry as possible.

The limit is no longer the scan itself, but the physical resolution of resin printing.

Every reduction is made with one goal in mind: losing as little of Johnny's original work as possible, so the final print still carries the same character, texture, and feeling as the sculpture sitting on the workbench.

Help with 3d scanning my living room
