From the Oamaru Instagram:
“The parents will take turns incubating the eggs now. From our research we’ve found that some couples swap over on the nest everyday and others swap less frequently, some only once a week! Incubation generally lasts 35 days.”
That means we should expect the chicks to pip and hatch around 23 of August 2026; circle that Sunday on the calendars! Stay tuned to the livestream here!

Hello penguin gang! We have a great update from the Oamaru burrow, where an egg was laid last night, 16/07/2026 at 11:27pm. The resident father-to-be came right in almost as soon as it was laid, inspecting mom and staying by her side. Here is a couple hours later, when mom hands over the egg-sitting duty. In the video at the beginning the mom and the dad switch, with dad settling on the egg and mom gets a chance to stretch her flippers. She puts some nesting material on dad and even brings some more in from outside.
After laying the first egg, the mom will usually go back out fishing to regain some strength for laying the second egg, which is laid between 24-72 hours later. So check out the stream to see dad on egg duty and keep an eye out for the mom to come back and lay the second egg! By the start of next week I expect there to be two eggs here.

Hello penguin gang! It looks like we have further footage for the Adventure World chick, who as you can see is still a little stumbly! More of the baby fluff is gone, resulting in an interesting hairdo. It’s got more room to roam now, and looks like it might be attempting some penguin calls in this video. The chick also works on some wing flapping; it will soon be ready to start swimming in another couple weeks.
