Open caption screenings of "The Odyssey" are $$elling. Plus, many complaints on social media about how loud "The Odyssey" is.

Don't know if it is the loudness or how hot the movie is, but in any regard, open caption screenings of "The Odyssey" are selling quite well. Generally selling less than non-OC screenings but still selling. We've seen this before - when movies are truly hot, people will buy the open caption seats just to be able to see the movie.

One screenshot is the Alamo Drafthouse Loudoun in Ashburn, VA; the open caption screening is tomorrow morning at 11:30 am. Time of this screenshot: 8:00 pm the night before. Another screenshot is the Alamo Drafthouse Winchester in Winchester, VA; the open caption screening isn't even until Tuesday the 21st.

In San Jose, California, the AMC Saratoga 14 quit offering open captions.

What happened here is identical to what happened with the AMC Mesa Grand in Mesa, Arizona. A theater that was part of the much ballyhooed AMC open caption program, quit offering open captions but did not update its website.

AMC theater in Mesa, Arizona may have quit offering open captions despite what it says on its website

We have been warning for some time now that theaters can and do quit offering open captions. We have proof that the AMC Mesa Grand 14 in Mesa, Arizona has quit! Their website home page makes it look like they do (see the "Open Caption (On-Screen Subtitles)" in their theater description. BUT when you go to the AMC Open Caption program page, the Arizona listing does NOT have the AMC Mesa Grand 14 anymore. THIS is why more laws are needed for open captions in states and cities - to protect the open caption screenings so theaters can't just quit.

Edit: a comment below brought to our attention that the same thing happened with the AMC Saratoga in San Jose, California. Gone from amc open caption program, but website still proclaims they offer open captions. Wonder how many other amc theaters quit the much ballyhooed amc open caption program.

In Norton, Virginia (Wise County) the Norton Cinema City theater is launching open captions.

The nine-screen Norton Cinema City theater is the first independent theater to voluntarily offer regular open caption screenings since Virginia's new law went into effect on July 1. They announced it with beautiful, creative flyers. (Yes, the Virginia page of the master list is updated with the addition of this theater.)

West Virginia movie theaters offering open caption screenings

West Virginia has barely little over a handful of theaters offering open captions. The state has few theaters, but even with the little over a handful of theaters offering open captions, there are still some theaters with 8 or more screens not offering open captions. Vermont movie theaters offering open caption screenings

Vermont is a tiny state. How small? The second smallest by population size. Yet it has a few movie theaters offering open captions. In most states, we consider a theater with 8 or more screens perfectly capable of offering limited open caption screenings. For Vermont, that threshold drops to 4 screens. Five out of 15 Vermont theaters not offering open captions, have at least four screens and could be offering open captions.

Texas Texas movie theaters offering open captions (or not)

As a big state, Texas naturally has several theaters offering open captions regularly. In updating this list, we found we had to remove several theaters (Marcus/Movie Tavern and B&B Theatres particularly). Compared to this short list of Texas theaters that do offer open captions, the listing of theaters that do not - ESPECIALLY Cinemark, which has over 80 theaters in Texas - is quite simply, huge. Over 300 theaters in Texas do not offer any open captions. Of those, over 200 have 8 screens or more and could EASILY be offering limited open caption screenings. Texas, or at least the bigger cities in Texas - ESPECIALLY San Antonio, DEFINITELY needs a law to require a minimal number of open caption screenings at the larger movie theaters.

Virginia 's New open caption (on screen subtitles) law now in effect.

Today is July 1, 2026. Now Virginia 's new open caption law has taken effect. The best part of the new law is not the part that requires all Virginia AMC, Regal, Cinemark, and Alamo Drafthouse theaters to have regular limited open caption screenings. The best part, in our opinion, is the part that enables requests for open captions at other theaters, requests that must be responded to within 8 days.

That part is what will open up the moviegoing experience for Virginians in less populated areas who need or want open captions. Beyond the Northern Virginia region, Virginia has many counties and independent cities where people will benefit from their new rights under this law.

Question for hearing people: would open captions help with crying babies and noisy children in the movie theater?

Lately we are seeing more and more posts from people frustrated by their moviegoing experience due to crying babies and noisy children. So we wonder if open captions might help?

North Bend Theatre in North Bend, WA has open caption screenings.

Actually, they have "Accessibility" screenings. It is increasingly common for theaters to offer accessibility screenings, but those screenings do not always have open captions. These screenings often cannot be picked up by automated tools for finding open caption screenings.

Did we mention that this theater also has only one screen? Once again, another small theater puts the big boy theaters to shame.

Mill Theatres in Milbank, SD has open captions almost daily

We saw a Facebook post that puzzled us. The Mill Theatres in Milbank, South Dakota was saying they would have a caption free Friday. Puzzled, we exchanged multiple comments until it became clear: this small three screen theater in South Dakota has open captions every night except Friday.

Let that sink in. Huge theaters with 10 plus screens nationwide not offering any open captions, and here a theater has it almost daily.

Update on the New York State Open Captions Bill (S9888/A4628B) and Next Steps Before Adjournment

Post image
2 Upvotes

UPDATE on the New York State Open Captions bill (S9888/A4628B):

According to the HLAA NYS Advocacy Committee and advocates working on the New York State Open Captions in movie theaters (OCAP) bill, S9888, Sen. April Baskin’s office (Chair of the Senate Commerce Committee) WILL discharge S9888 when the request comes from Sen. Fernandez’s (sponsor of S9888) office.

Sen. Baskin’s aide indicated that this likely will not happen until all state budget items are locked down - perhaps by Friday, over the weekend, or early next week.
Then we must hope Senate Leadership, headed by Sen. Andrea Stewart-Cousins, will bring the bill to the floor for passage before adjournment on June 4.

So, please continue to stay positive and thank Sen. Fernandez and/or Kim Bernstein, legislative director to Sen. Fernandez, for continuing to push S9888 forward through what remains a very crowded and narrow legislative path. The legislature has already postponed final budget action through more than 12 separate “budget extenders.”

If you live in New York State, support open captions in movie theaters, and have not already done so, please consider:

  1. Respectfully reaching out to Josh Marcil, Legislative Director to Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, at (518) 455-2585
to urge the bill’s discharge to enable passage by the Senate.

  2. Contacting your NY State Senator re S9888 -- and your Assembly Member re A4628B — IF they are not already co-sponsors of the legislation.

You can find the latest list of Senate co-sponsors here: https://www.nysenate.gov/legislation/bills/2025/S9888/amendment/A

You can find the latest list of Assembly co-sponsors here:  https://www.nysenate.gov/legislation/bills/2025/A4628/amendment/B

You can contact your Senator here: https://www.nysenate.gov/find-my-senator

Updated: Virginia listing of movie theaters offering open captions

Due to the new Virginia law taking effect in less than two months, we had to update the Virginia page. A handful of theaters have been moved from the "do not" section to the "does" section. Virginia's new open caption law is already bearing fruit!

Virginia page is here.

S9888 Needs a “Discharge” Into Rules and Onto the Senate Floor for a Vote Before the Legislative Session Ends June 4

Post image
8 Upvotes

S9888, our NYS Senate bill to end movie cinema discrimination against the deaf and hard of hearing, needs a “discharge” into Rules NOW from the Commerce Committee so that it can be voted on before adjournment on June 4.

If you live in New York State, please call ASAP:

Sean Mulligan
716.826.2683
Legislative Director
for Commerce Committee Chair Sen. April Baskin
Leave a message, if necessary, on behalf of New Yorkers who are deaf and hard of hearing to please help move S9888 via a discharge and toward a Senate vote in the short time remaining.

And if you can make a second call, ask Sen. Majority Leader Stewart-Cousins’ legislative director to help push S9888 toward a vote:

Josh Marcil
518.455-2585.

It only takes a minute to make these 2 calls.

——————————-

Progress is being made on the Assembly side, where we’re hoping A4628B (AM Seawright, lead sponsor) will be voted out of Rules and passed by the Assembly in coming days.

Thank you to everyone who has already made calls, sent emails, shared posts, or helped spread awareness. It really is making a difference. As the bill status changes, we’ll continue sharing updates on the next steps that can help move this legislation forward before the legislative session ends.

NY open captions bill (S9888) needs calls NOW to Majority Leader Stewart-Cousins’ office

IMPORTANT UPDATE ON NY OPEN CAPTIONS BILL S9888

On Tuesday (5/12), the Senate Consumer Protection Committee voted the open captions bill (S9888) forward to the Commerce, Economic Development and Small Business Committee.

But, that committee is unable to vote it out for a floor vote this week. Now, our only hope, according to lead sponsor Sen. Nathalia Fernandez’s team, is to obtain “a discharge from Commerce to Rules,” so that the Senate can pass S.9888 and the Assembly can pass the companion A4628B before the legislature adjourns on June 4.

Please make two telephone calls NOW:

  1. Call Josh Marcil in Albany at 518-455-2585

He is Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins’ Legislative Director. The Majority Leader has the authority to discharge S.9888 to Rules and enable Senate passage. Let Mr. Marcil know we’re watching.

If he doesn’t pick up, leave an urgent message on behalf of HLAA NYSA and the state’s over one million deaf and hard of hearing people who deserve equal access to movies in cinemas.

The bill has also been
amended to protect smaller cinemas while requiring the big cinema chains to offer a fair number of open-captioned movie showtimes.

  1. Call your Senator’s Albany Office to Speak Up Now to Bring S.9888 to the Floor for a Vote

Find your Senator here:
https://www.nysenate.gov/find-my-senator

If we don’t get action NOW, we’re left to wait another year to end the discrimination of chain cinemas against New Yorkers who are deaf and hard of hearing.

Trying to get open captions for 1 off showings

I was hoping to get open captions for the special 25th anniversary showing of Spy Kids in Austin (filmed here). I sent an email to the accessibility desk, they said "we will not be able to have open captions for this screening". That sucks. Their site doesn't mention the option of any kind of captioning device at all. Just ASL interpreters and Assistive Listening Devices.

Auditory Processing Best captioning app?

Hi all! I'm wondering if anyone has found a captioning app that works well in movie theaters? I have zero love for the weird creations they currently offer for CCs (the cupholder ones are my worst enemies). I haven't been to a theater where they had the glasses yet (but I wear prescription glasses and am skeptical of having to layer up my eyewear).

I use iOS, and it would have to be one that does well with meetings in bad acoustics, too 🥹 if possible.

Thank you!!

NY Open Captions Bill (S9888) Submitted for Upcoming Consumer Protection Committee Agenda

Post image
8 Upvotes

May 6 Update from the Hearing Loss Association of America New York State (HLAA-NYS) Advocacy Committee:

The State Senate bill (S.9888) to require open-captions of movies in cinemas has been submitted for inclusion on the agenda for the next meeting of the Consumer Protection Committee.

These agendas first undergo review by counsel and leadership. But we are hopeful that Consumer Protection will take up and approve S.9888 in coming days.

If you haven't yet asked your state senators to co-sponsor the bill, please call or email their offices now to express your desire to end discrimination by the big cinema chains, such as AMC and Regal, against people who are deaf and hard of hearing.

Time is short, as the State Legislature is set to adjourn in early June.

Update: NY Open Captions at Movie Theaters Bill (S9888) still stuck in committee, needs calls ASAP

Post image
3 Upvotes

Update on the NY Open Captions at Movie Theaters Bill (S9888):

The bill was introduced on April 13 and, as of May 4, is still stuck in the NY State Senate Consumer Protection Committee. With the legislative session ending on June 4, time is running out. If it does not move IMMEDIATELY NOW, it will likely stall again this year.

What helps most (in order):

Call Rachel May (Chair of the Consumer Protection Committee)
As Chair, she decides whether this bill moves forward.
She was also a co-sponsor last year but has not yet signed on this session:
(518) 455-2838

Call your NY State Senator and ask them to co-sponsor S9888
More co-sponsors = more pressure to move the bill.

Find your senator:
https://www.nysenate.gov/find-my-senator

If your Senator supported this bill last year, ask them to renew their co-sponsorship.
This includes:

Bill Weber (also on the Consumer Protection Committee)
Lea Webb
Julia Salazar

Quick action form (takes 1–2 minutes):
https://www.hearingloss.org/advocacy-and-resources/action-alerts/expand-new-york-open-caption-movies/

This bill would require a limited number of movie showtimes with open captions, meaning captions are shown directly on the screen, and these showings will be clearly labeled so people can choose whether to attend those showings.

It helps not only people who are deaf or hard of hearing, but also people who are neurodivergent, have auditory processing challenges, are English language learners, or anyone who benefits from captions.

Last year, the bill had support but never made it out of committee. That is exactly what could happen again without public pressure.

There is still a real chance to get it passed this session, but only if people act now.

You can read the bill here:
https://www.nysenate.gov/legislation/bills/2025/S9888

Even a small number of calls can make a difference right now.
If you have a minute, please call. If you can, please share.

What to say (10 seconds):

For Senator May:
Hi, I’m calling to ask Senator May to co-sponsor S9888 again and move the open captions at movie theaters bill out of committee.

For your Senator:
Hi, I’m a constituent calling to ask Senator ___ to co-sponsor S9888, the open captions at movie theaters bill, and support moving it forward this session.
