Will My X Hardware work on OpenBSD? If X=Nvidia, then no. Other answers inside.
First off. Your Nvidia graphics card won't work with OpenBSD except maybe as a VESA or UEFI framebuffer. No acceleration. Period. Nvidia themselves writes proprietary binary drivers for Linux and FreeBSD, but not OpenBSD. Will that change? Ask Nvidia. It's rather unlikely though.
Does OpenBSD support 3d Acceleration? Yes. As of this writing (7.6 was just released) OpenBSD has the DRM drivers from the Linux 6.6 stable branch. So it has the most up to date DRM drivers of the BSDs. As of 7.6 there's even GPU acceleration of video for AMD and Intel GPUs.
Will $X random laptop work? If it's an X-series or T-series thinkpad that wasn't released as new in the last month, probably. See above about Nvidia graphics though. Will other thinkpads work? Probably. The X and T series are most popular with developers so get the most attention. I've had good success with HP ProBooks, but rock a T490 Thinkpad currently. Framework laptops tend to work too.
Will $X desktop work? Probably. Try it. I've run it on any number of HP business desktops with great success. Intel graphics works great. AMD graphics should work well.
Will my Wifi work? If it's Intel, probably. Most of the Intel chipsets support 802.11ac speeds. Even the ax chipsets should work, but only at ac speeds. Why Intel? Someone contracted stsp@ to get them working well. Other stuff, works, but will probably be restricted to 802.11g speeds.
Will your random Temu-bought ARM board work? Who knows. Try it. arm64 RPi boards tend to work although at this time the RPi5 doesn't. It's too new and too different from the earlier boards.
There's no bluetooth support currently. Not because of security issues, but because when we last had bluetooth, it was unmaintained and a mess. If someone can come along with a decent bluetooth stack that is good, maintainable code, we'd take it. No one has stepped up so far.
HDMI audio could work but doesn't currently. Mainly because HDMI audio would get detected before regular audio and would become default audio. Most folks don't use HDMI audio though, so that change would break audio for most users and only benefit a handful.
This should cover the majority of hardware questions that keep getting asked. I'll edit it and try to keep it up to date.
M1 and M2 Macbooks should be supported. There will not be video acceleration.
Update 2024-12-08: Added mention of macbooks. Tweaked wifi wording. Tried to make it clearer where X represents any random hardware someone is asking about.

Left Out of 7.9?
Is it my imagination, or did a lot of things get left out of 7.9 as compared to the last two versions? Ex., sddm and Intel’s BE200? I had wifi working on 7.8 on the same machine (I think). Now dmesg lists: Intel unknown product. When I tried to install and find sddm, only a total blank. What doc did I miss that explains, or is there one? Thanks.

user advocacy Boot Sequence: OpenBSD
I am currently trying different OS and OpenBSD has been one of the biggest surprises so far.
I ran into a couple of hardware-related issues. The backlight keys don't work on my laptop I suspect that's due to incomplete support for my particular hardware rather than a problem with OpenBSD itself.
Overall, I've found OpenBSD really enjoyable to use.

Can't start any Display Manager
Tried this with gnome (and read the readme) and it gave this error, so I reinstalled to try with xenodm and it gives me this error. Booting with -c doesn't help because my keyboard stats disconnected.
This is a fully installed system. Genuinely losing my mind
EDIT SOLVED I had to turn off Resize BAR and now gnome is running!!!

Uneven sampling frequency when playing ncspot music
Hi, I've been testing OpenBSD 7.9 on Thinkpad P1 Gen7. So far, it has been a bumpy road. But one audio related thing is super-annoying and I'd love to see some advice from you.
I use ncspot to play Spotify music, but I notice from time to time that sampling frequency changes noticeably for a few seconds. It's something I cannot tolerate. I tried a few sndiod parameters like increasing -b with no luck.
I use Sound Blaster G3 (USB-C DAC) with headphones.

OpenBSD on a Chromebook
Hardware probe: https://bsd-hardware.info/?probe=7501a79aa8
Still surprises me that almost everything worked out of the box. Audio, Touchpad, etc.
Though some things (proprietary garbage), needed fw_update(8) to function properly.
But other than that, this is definitely daily drivable.
No doubt that devs did a great job.

Questions about OpenBSD
Hi, I’d like to know how ports work on OpenBSD and whether I could make my own. Mostly I’d like to port Zen Browser since it’s my favorite, using Firefox as its base — do you think it’s possible?
What IDEs are available on FreeBSD?
And more importantly, does anyone use GOT (Game of Trees) in their daily workflow? How do you use it? I want to use it. I have a website whose commits I sign, but with GOT I can only sign tags, not commits. How would I handle my deployment? Or does it not matter if they’re unsigned? I’m mainly a programmer, but I use a YubiKey for GPG signing and SSH authentication.

What can I do so my ports will not get lost?
For a couple of weeks now, I am trying to get four ports become part of the official repository.
I have already written dozens of mails to ports@ but they rarely get a a reply. (If any).
They do not seem to get any traction, for whatever reason.
So, obviously, I COULD keep annoying the developers directly by writing another mail every week, but I do not want to. Consistency is a major problem: Writing a mail, and comparing it to a mail 4 weeks ago that looks completely different is just tiresome on the readers.
So... What else can I do? My greatest hope is that somebody will SYSTEMATICALLY go through the mailing list and collect all my ports, but biggest fear is that they will simply be forgotten.

OpenBSD Sparc
Wanted to try something that wasn't solaris that was safe and secure and could allow some older hardware some flexibility. Because it's old enterprise equipment I don't have a need for a graphical system or most anything else that isn't related and it comes with a squashfs of openbsd in the ILOM so figured I try. Installed pretty easy but I'm having some frustrating issues that have got to be PEBKAC. It's connected to the Internet, it can ping just find has no problems detecting the network but I can't do anything with the package manager. In theory I bought to be able to put java on it (kinda sacrilegious to have a sun microsystems NOT have java) but I'm getting a no address associated with name error on just about everything I look for suggesting I didn't set something up right.
Been looking for answers and just like everything new you gotta know what your looking for to find it so I'm hoping the community can tell me what stupid thing I've done or simple thing I likely missed that's causing my problem

8.0-Beta
I was very surprised today to find out that -current moved to 8.0-beta. I'm not here to announce that, of course. I'm here to ask the developers whats up (in a friendly way). OpenBSD 7.9 was a little later than usual (and it should always take as long as needed to be ready, of course.), and now, less than two full months later, we are in 8.0-beta.
I know the general "how it works": they have certain feature sets they want in the release, and when its ready, they stabilize everything, make sure its good, and then release. Seeing as how the amount of stuff added so far after 7.9-release, its a good amount, as always. This doesnt appear to be a small release.
So my actual question to the devs is this: Did the stars just align and everything work out fast?

drive overheating issue
I was trying OpenBSD, but I soon realized that it makes my DRIVES very hot. To the point I almost burnt my hands. I tested on both: HP G42 and Raspberry Pi 4 Model B. It made my USB, SD, and HDD EXTREMELY hot. Please help.

Inteldrm broken on MTL
It used to work YESTERDAY. I’m trying Openbsd for the first time being FreeBSD user.
Yesterday, test went fine on P1 Gen 7 MTL.
After the full fledged install, inteldrm crashes on load. Sigh… no time to debug that. Cheers.

acpitz is broken
So I installed OpenBSD on the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 5 14QX8X9 and while the actual installation was unremarkable. For some reason during boot it shows this. Now I would just outright try to disable acpitz but I can’t type in the -c menu but I can for a couple seconds in the normal boot before the shutdown.

MediaTek 7921 Wireless and OpenBSD 7.9
Hi,
I have just installed OpenBSD on my Acer Aspire 5 a515-56, but I am stuck trying to get the network card working. I did a google search and found out that from 7.5 the mwx(4) driver for MediaTek cards (MT7921 and MT7922) was introduced.
I tried fw_update but that didn't work. Also tried downloading the firmware from firmware.openbsd.org
Version: 7.9
Output of dmesg: "MediaTek MT7921" rev 0x00 at pci2 dev 0 function 0 not configured ugen1 at uhub0 port 10 "MediaTek Inc. Wireless Device" rev 2.10/1.00 addr 3.

What desktop optimizations you guys use?
Hi, I installed OpenBSD 7.9 on a desktop machine: Ryzen/amdgpu, updated. All good besides one complete system freeze in Chromium when opened a page containing video.
My question is a bit different though. What desktop-related optimizations you guys do after such installation? What into sysctl.conf? Increased login.conf limits. What else? Something kern/shm/Xorg related? I plan to use Mate desktop/Firefox, mostly terminal work. Machine with desktop Ryzen 7xxx and 64 GB RAM + NVME.
Thanks and sorry for a rookie question.

OpenBSD 7.9 hoodie please
I was wondering if anyone knows whether there will be an official OpenBSD 7.9 hoodie added to the official shop?
I bought the 7.8 hoodie and really like it, so I'd happily pick up a 7.9 version as well. I wasn't sure if they usually get added a bit later or if there simply isn't one planned this time around.
Thanks!

System panicking(?) after going out of sleep?
After going out of sleep for more than few minutes (with xfce4, at least. I will try to get exact times later), system will draw unresonsible after ~5 seconds (or instantly, I haven't been able to reproduce each of situation in stable way - it is pretty much random for me). I can't open vTTY with Ctrl+Alt+F keys, and have to force shutdown to reboot afterwards. Can it be bad apm/zzz configuration or maybe drivers issue? I have tried to look into dmesg but it only shows latest boot and there wasn't anything useful there (you can check it on https://pastebin.com/xsdmjJ1g)
System configuration (ASUS Vivobook laptop):
OpenBSD 7.9
AMD Ryzen 5 5600H
AMD Cezanne (iGPU)
Intel AX210 (wifi)

Thinkpad P1 Gen7 and OpenBSD?
Hey, am I too naive going to try OpenBSD 7.9 on a P1 Gen7 (Intel 165H Meteor Lake) hoping for GPU and Wifi to work? Suspend does not work yet even on 7.1 Linux (there's bugfix already piped for 7.2), so that's not an issue. My only concerns are inteldrm and the BE200 Intel Wifi.

bcm94313hmgb drivers
I have an old computer which I need to connect to a network and access through SSH. But I could find no drivers for this and my USB dongle (TP-Link Archer T2U nano) is also not compatible. If I try to change the WiFi card, my laptop's BIOS does not let me boot (HP G4). Can anyone find drivers for my WiFi card? Thanks.
