Spoilers: at the end Thor knocks Doom’s mask off his face and he’s like “Tony?” And Doom gets worked out “why did you say that name?”

It turns out Doom’s mom’s name is Tony. So they become friends.

u/dukeofgonzo 3h ago

The next Avengers will be a battle between Tony, Toni, and Toné.

This would be the unironic reaction if it happened during peal Marvel hype

7

u/sephrisloth 3h ago

The sad part is besides the mom part this exact scene is probably gonna happen more or less exactly as you wrote it. The character who knocks the mask off might be different but you know its gonna play out like that.

I sat with him at a bar once. If he weren't an iconic childhood actor it wouldn't even register, but yeah, at least in his mid-30s he had literally the same face just slightly wider and with facial hair.

Voice was definitely different though lol.

Is RDJ Tony stark and becomes Dr Doom, or is he just Dr. Doom

533

u/actionscripted 6h ago

Allegedly just Dr. Doom but I mean come the fuck on right?

Hey we are continuing the Harry Potter series and Daniel Radcliffe is now playing the bad guy. No alternate timeline stuff, just an actor playing a different character.

Next Star Wars Adam Driver is playing a smuggler with a heart of gold!

113

u/Phaedo 6h ago

As long as he shoots first, I’m down.

31

u/Maatix12 4h ago

This.

They've already done the character switcheroo before. I fully expect Doom is Tony Stark, maybe from another universe, maybe from another timeline, or maybe stone shenanigans that force him to come back. But the reveal that RDJ would be Doom basically sealed that he's Stark to me.

16

u/BrownEyeBearBoy 3h ago

I saw a fun theory that made me feel better about it. In endgame when cap and iron man steal the pim particles from the lab in the past, Howard stark was working that lab. Hank Pim notices the missing particles, fires Howard. Howard's wife already pregnant with "Tony" in that timeline. "Tony" doesn't grow up as a billionaire playboy, and grows up Victor von Doom instead.

9

u/OkWillow6019 2h ago

this is it. i know it in my bones, gonna come back in 5 months.

10

u/Crilde 2h ago

It's a nice theory and I'd like it if it weren't for the fact that Howard was already rich as fuck by that point. The whole scene ends with him climbing into the back of a fancy car, with living Jarvis (or some other butler) holding the door for him.

→ More replies (1)

4

u/Frosti11icus 50m ago

This would be especially dumb given that Howard Stark is one of the founders of SHIELD and there is no scenario where he would be hurting for money, or be an underling at Pym's lab. Howard invented Captain America, why would he "work" for Pym?

3

u/HTPC4Life 3h ago

Turns out when you make a fantasy universe where anything you can think of in your wildest dreams can happen, nothing has any meaning or purpose anymore. I'll never understand the people that gobble up this Marvel shit like they're the best movies ever.

Honestly, it would be a great story if during Harry's time as teacher for defense against the dark arts, het gets corrupted by something he is researching, totally gets black pilled into how Hogwarts needs to be eradicated, and becomes the villain. You find out much later he was posessed by some ancient evil entity that can only be destroyed by dark magic, so the kids HAVE to learn the curses in order to destroy it, and the students learn that there cannot be just light, or just darkness, but a balance.

4

u/charlie-ratkiller 3h ago

Yeah but after the 2nd movie fans riot and so they hire a different director for the final movie of the trilogy and he resets the board and you find out (explained in a seasonal dlc of hogwarts legacy) that somehow Voldemort returned

22

u/Traditional_Top_194 5h ago

So we just gonna ignore Chris Evans?

I'm 100% in agreement that this was desperation, but its not against its own rules to have "Same actor, different character cuz multiverse".

13

u/naz_man04 4h ago

Difference is Chris Evans was just a light heated callback to another role, they invented the role of Doom specifically for RDJ to play.

As a comic enjoyed its funny watching people who haven't read the comics be very confused.

This all makes sense to me and is almost directly taken from 2015 secret wars.

6

u/dcucc44 3h ago

4

u/EggplantCharacter363 3h ago

But like its not a secret?

25

Yeah no way. Definitely trying to hide the ""reveal"" or some shit

13

u/WhoPoopedMyPants420 4h ago

I think we might see the slow rationalizations of an addict relapsing.

"oo, just bring back the actor in a different role, for the money"
"oo, well, maybe there can be some callback to his earlier role, audiences will eat it up!"
"oo maybe it's just fucking him from a parallel dimension and we're going to get a redemption arc so this universe can have an RDJ Iron Man again"

→ More replies (3)

87

u/SeeItOnVHS 6h ago

RDJ eventually will be playing all the avengers like Eddie Murphy in the Nutty Professor

26

u/MeEyeSlashU 5h ago

He's also playing Eddie Murphy which apparently is fine for him. Just a dude playing a dude playing another dude.

7

u/xredbaron62x 4h ago

What do YOU mean, you people?

3

u/PerspectiveCorner 3h ago

Never go full IronMan

11

u/szthesquid 5h ago

They claim just straight up Doom, but also that they'll address why he looks the same, so who knows.

18

u/Bulbascott1990 4h ago

I mean, Dr. Strange 2 introduced a magic power where someone can jump universes by inhabiting a dead body. Dr. Doom piloting Tony's dead body to enter the MCU-verse would go so fucking hard.

4

u/phantomfire50 4h ago

It's not inhabiting a dead body, it's just inhabiting a variant of yourself. Strange inhabits the dead body of the Strange that brought America to his universe because he was available, but he can't possess some random guy on the street.

In order for Doom to pilot Tony's corpse, he'd already have to be a variant of Tony.

7

u/Comfortable_Work4822 4h ago

No, it wouldn't. It would be lame, which it is and this movie will be. This is cheap, tacky, stupid. They are so creatively bankrupt, this crap is all they could come up with. It's unbelievable that with SO many diehard fans, artists, writers and others available in this space who would kill and give anything to work on Marvel, that this is all they could come up with. Nostalgia slop from people obviously uninterested in preserving the franchise.

→ More replies (1)

5

u/SQUAWKUCG 4h ago

I thought it was from a different timeline where Tony Stark loses his family and becomes Dr Doom or something along those lines.

6

u/LeaderScared2892 4h ago

I think in one of the comics there is alternative reality where tony stark is the dr doom. And since the fantastic 4 movie was already in the alternative reality i think that was the plan

78

u/FoxNixon go back to the club 6h ago

And also the squirrel keeps having shenanigans, like the nut falling inside the Queens nest or something

6

That doesn't feel too far from what we got.

u/evan274 artemis fowl representative 6h ago

/uj The main characters are long-lost siblings who watched Ice Age: Continental Drift together as children. In episode two, Wendy sees an image of Sid and uses a quote from the movie as an inside joke to let her brother know she is alive.

/rj Ice Age is the only movie I’ve ever seen which is why I know this. I’m looking for movies to watch next so please give me recommendations. It has to have a sloth in it otherwise I will throw a temper tantrum .

Careful, I once called the MCU a sinking ship and everyone here lost their minds

285

u/Meeedick 6h ago

To be fair, it's only sinking cause they've been forcing it to constantly sail across the world without docking or refueling.

144

u/SkyJW 6h ago

Really is a shame that they didn't just do a few years of solo send off films or even series to just clean house, have some fun with the characters without trying to tie it all together, and then really sketch out another long term storyline with the X-Men, Fantastic Four, and maybe a few of the old guard to help transition to a new saga.

Instead they started pumping out so much shit that, as someone who was only ever casually interested in the MCU, the idea of consuming all of it to follow along felt like a fucking job/lifestyle. No breathing space or break, just half a dozen Disney+ series and two or three theatrical releases a year.

Maybe some of it is good, but I just don't care enough about it to feel like the time investment is remotely worth it for me.

38

u/linux_ape 6h ago

They saw the success of endgame/infinity war and took the conclusion of “wow more characters more success, tie everything together immediately” while ignoring the previous 10 years of buildup and character building

50

u/Chad_Broski_2 Neil breens #1 fan 6h ago

The MCU formula also started to insidiously seep into fucking everything. It was cool in 2015 when they were the only ones doing it. But nowadays it feels like with half the big franchise movies that come out, only exist to establish a whole new universe and can't be enjoyed on their own

Capitalism is reaching a point of enshittification that ain't even amusing anymore.

7

u/Embarrassed-Gur-1306 5h ago

I honestly thought this is what they were gonna do after Endgame. Wrap up the entire Avengers saga and start a new shared universe around the X-Men and Fantastic 4.

3

u/yungdeezy92 4h ago

Right? The name “Endgame” kind of implies an ending of some sort. Idk, maybe I’m missing something.

5

u/markleo 6h ago

Instead they started pumping out so much shit that, as someone who was only ever casually interested in the MCU, the idea of consuming all of it to follow along felt like a fucking job/lifestyle.

Yeah, I have the same problem, and it's made worse by the streaming mess with Spider-Man. I missed the third movie, whose name I don't even remember, but at this point I've had all the major plot points spoiled: other MCU characters' appearances, multiverse shenanigans and cameos, major changes for the main characters. I don't know if it was well-written enough for those things to have real emotional impact, but now they surely wouldn't. Hell, I don't even remember where exactly I left off in the overarching story.

So now that it's finally on The Marvel Streaming Service, it's like, what's the point? Do I watch it just in case there's a detail I need to know for the fourth movie, which I'll almost certainly need to watch to know what's going on in Doomsday? Or do I just like.. go do something else? (Yes. I do go do something else. Anything else.)

lmao yeah the mcu has been sailing for too long without a major plot reset

6

u/Auggie_Otter 5h ago

After Infinity War and Endgame they really needed to cool their jets. That was the big climax.

Aside from a couple of movies that helped tie up some loose ends in their own franchises like Guardians of the Galaxy 3 and Spiderman: No Way Home they really should have slowed the release schedule way down just let the whole Marvel universe cool down for a bit so they could start off small again and build up anticipation for another story arc in the future.

I am, unironically, an apologist for the movies that came out immediately after Infinity War. The 21-22 movies were largely good. But then you get that next Phase where half the movies are good and half the movies are bad. Avengers Doomsday looks like garbage, but will also probably make a billion dollars. It's not looking good.

I know little details of this casting. Was it RDJ wanting to come back to the MCU, or was it MCU desperate and panicking that had them bring him back.

45

u/SpecialFXStickler 5h ago

Reeks of desperation, but I’m sure he wanted to come back as long as they gave him

https://giphy.com/gifs/26BRwW3ckGjcZmsxO

28

u/_-HeX-_ 4h ago

Probably both. In RDJ's case, he finally proved himself by winning an Oscar (Best Supporting Actor for Oppenheimer) which is no small feat when looking at the arc of his entire troubled career. Now he gets to go back to Marvel--on their hands and knees--with an Oscar in his pocket and demand more money from them than Tony Stark has in his bank account to be in a movie for 20 minutes

17

u/NoBizlikeChloeBiz The Room 5h ago

Most likely both. People assume desperation because it came on the heels of the big Jonathan Majors panic and Quantumania doing poorly, and was part of a huge pivot in the roadmap/story.

But RDJ has always seemed super happy with his role in the MCU and his relationship with Stark as a character. I think he was probably genuinely excited to get to be involved again.

10

u/VegaJuniper 3h ago

Arthur Conan Doyle was just utterly sick of writing about Sherlock Holmes so he killed Holmes off in The Final Problem. His real passion was writing historical fiction, along with having chats with fairies and seances and such. Then a publisher asked him how much would it cost to bring back Holmes, and Doyle gave a figure so ludicrous that he thought no one in their right mind would say yes to it. The publisher said yes, and shortly after The Hound of the Baskervilles was published.

Never underestimate the power of a literal dump truck of money.

Am I the only one who sees this and doesn’t feel anything?

28

u/DanaxDrake 6h ago

Cos it’s just a scene with no build up or anything. Why is Thor hitting doom? Why do we care? Is Thor even at full power? What’s different about this moment then when Thor got pwned by Thanos

Or when he struggled against Gorr

Edit: someone also mentioned this happened with Hela too lol

Like Thor buddy, you actually get no diff’d a fair bit.

Also muthertrucka still didn’t go for the head like god damn dude

13

u/seatsfive 4h ago

Thor and Hulk are the Commanders Worf of the MCU. Do cool shit, very strong, but their main roles are as jobbers who heighten the threat level by getting their shit pushed in

111

u/Quantum_Wake 7h ago edited 6h ago

You’re not the only one. The lack of build up takes away from this scene, along with the fact that the audience already knows who’s under the mask. We won’t feel the shock the characters feel because they already gave it away.

Also the way Doom stops Thor feels odd. Put some SFX that shows off how untouchable he is.

31

u/2hurd 6h ago

It's like some Gojo Satoru shit but without the background story, lore and buildup.

18

u/TheSprigganDragoon 6h ago

Even the impact seemed... empty. They could've at least added some impact effect. Dust kicking up around them, Doom's cloak billowing some. Something.

4

u/StPattyIce 3h ago

This at least would improve the effect they are going for here. Just because Doom stops the attack doesn't mean that the impact of it through the air and Thor landing would just disappear.

7

u/heryqk 6h ago

I’m with you. I’m not sure it’s due
to lack of buildup though. We’ve seen this exact thing with Hela. She was a new character and immediately made an entrance by breaking Mjulnir. This is just more of the same.

11

u/Soft_Self_6797 6h ago

I'm a MCU fan (disgusting, I know), but even I felt nothing. I wanted to feel something but I feel....nothing. The only way this works out is if this is the start of a saga and not the conclusion to this phase of MCU. Because it just doesn't have as much sauce as Thanos build up. However, they had to scramble this shit together due to Johnathan Majors was suffering from too much success and had to beat his partner.

Also Grimes' character makes the voice acting of everyone else seem transcendent by comparison.

Gross. The size of this man’s ego rivals Alec Baldwin’s.

I love that they cast him before having a finished script.

The face he makes is soooooo ugly. He needs to get humbled. His ego is way too big just for pretending to be someone else.

I, for one, am looking forward to this slop.

/uj I still maintain they’re trying to set up the Infamous Iron Man in order to get RDJ back into the armor w/o lessening the impact of Stark’s death.

Pic is related though

I love that the strategic appeal of this franchise for Marvel was that they could ideally move actors in and out, but the audience just doesn't allow it.

I cringe every time I think of this, about once or twice a month - pls make it stop

Is that Peter Pan?!?

I get yalls points but the movie is already booked in my area. Already. Unless you see it in the morning like a boomer, you won't see it till the week after comfortably.

Type shit type shit yo.

I think this could have worked a lot better (and cheaper) if they didn't announce it. Just let the in movie reveal plus word of mouth do all the marketing.

u/FortnitePapi 4h ago

OP you are forgetting there is only 25 actors in the world. Just finished the oddessey can confirm

u/MinaZata 4h ago

Still one of the most embarrassing and cringe reveals of all time. Came off as desperate at the time and has only aged worse

Doom should be played by Ralph Fiennes

On the one hand, this gives HEAVY secondhand embarrassment. On the other hand, which I suppose is my first hand since the previous hand was my second hand... Anyway:

Jurassic Park was built on an island with a volcano. That is going to wipe them all out.

Somehow, Robert Downey Jr returned.

u/mccrowj92 2h ago

He takes off his mask at the end and makes soft erotic eye contact with Thor. “It’s about doom time Point Break”

u/kingofallwinners 2h ago

I remember reddit eating this shit up, just like you all peed your pants over the trailer for the new Spiderman prequel/sequel/spinoff part 7.

I wish they'd licked anyone other than RDJ. He was perfect as Ironman and using him as Doom is just embarrassing.

I'm sure he'll do fine but dude...they could've just brought him from some other earth and use an evil variant of Ironman as the bad guy instead of this multiverse crap. Such an obvious grab for attention and exploitation of his star power.

I remember all my nerdier friends (who actually had read far less Marvel Comics in their lives than I had) all attacking me when I said Marvel would never recover from End Game. They made the stakes so high that nothing could live up to or surpass that. Marvel rightfully tried to go back to the unknown and lesser known heroes and actors but people just wanted more End Game, forgetting that took like a decade of patient set up to get to those stakes.
