Modern action movies need to take tips from tokusatsu shows and just reuse the same 5 locations depending on what the scene needs.

Does the scene need a big explosion at the end? Go to the quarry. Is there a lot of close quarters action and maneuvering around obstacles? Start throwing junk in the warehouse to get it nice and cluttered. Does someone have to fall from an absurd height? Time to go to that one city rooftop.

Bottom one is the modern equivalent of those Star Trek planet scenes from the 60s

297

u/OttoandOllie 8h ago

I was actually thinking why not just film at Vasquez rocks like Star Trek and have a real environment

96

u/keksmuzh 7h ago

Or the rock quarry half of all Tokusatsu fights are filmed in

44

u/OttoandOllie 7h ago

I have absolutely no idea what Tokusatsu is. Is it related to Anbo-jyutsu, the ultimate evolution of human martial arts?

Processing img j9s730a6rreh1...

17

u/keksmuzh 7h ago

Well now I need to track down whatever the fuck this is because that’s incredible

27

u/OttoandOllie 7h ago

I told ya, it's the ultimate evolution of human martial arts!

https://youtu.be/O1A2zPqVq5w?is=ITc3-M3u0DisKjvA

17

u/dirtydigs74 7h ago

Well that was, without equivocation, the ultimate evolution of human martial art. Even got a rare "hachidan kiritsu" move thrown in at the end.

Edit: I'd go so far as to say that that was the best showcase video for Anbo-jyutsu I've ever seen.

Its a japanese company reknowned for TV shows featuring Monster of the Week type plots and practical effect fights since like the 80s. They're probably most well known for what is known around the world as the Power Rangers.

The number of different shows theyve produced and their influence is staggering.

Edit: Turns out I dont know anything and am spreadimg misinformation. Sorry everyone.

11

It actually gets worse, they filmed at a real location using green screens, only that it was Bahrain and they made a deal with the dictator of that country so that the police and military would help with the paparazzi:

So it looks like cgi AND costs more?? I need to get into the movie biz, it sounds like an easy scam, lol.

Maybe it's he elder Millenial in me but I wish we could go back to sfx circa 2005ish.

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers is the pinnacle of movie sfx. A perfect mix of live effects, models, and cgi. Please can we go back to then?

It's so much worse.

At least the star trek sets had some interesting scenery for the actors to interact with and move around in.

These shots are all filmed on a volume so the scene is set in the dead center of a 75 foot wide immobile featureless disk and all background detail is locked behind a wall 40 feet from the camera.

You cannot convince me that any of the actors in Doomsday have shot their scenes together.

559

u/LakyousSama 9h ago

Obvious given how far apart they're standing

351

u/Shoddy_Newspaper_718 9h ago edited 6h ago

They had to, though. Letitia Wright is a staunch anti-vaxxer, so they shot all the scenes involving her iconic breakthrough character, Shuri, separately.

192

u/BwanaTarik 9h ago

I can’t take Shuri seriously. And her posture here looks like she’s never once done a push up

Jordan turnes it down or something, I don't know, but it's such an obvious layup that it seems intentional to not do it.

Shit we brought back RDJ and Evans, it really wouldn't hurt to bring back MBJ.

49

u/Shoddy_Newspaper_718 7h ago

Alan Cumming said this. You would act out your scenes with stand-ins in morph suits and fake names taped to them so you could do your scenes without actually knowing what characters or actors you were in the scene with. You know. For maximum secrecy. Or the fact they wrote this movie as they made it.

127

u/Prophet_Tenebrae 7h ago

Actors truly give their best performances when they have absolutely no idea where they are, who they are talking to or what is going on.

The next logical step is for everyone to just do mocap in sensory deprivation tanks. Possibly while in a coma.

37

u/Shoddy_Newspaper_718 6h ago

Sir Ian McKellen, breaking up and crying while in a completely green room, surrounded by the ping-pong balls with the names of all Dwarves...

A Prefix (Earliest/Original): In academic, historical, or literary contexts, "ur-" (often capitalized or with a hyphen) is a prefix borrowed from German meaning original, primitive, or earliest (e.g., ur-text or ur-civilization)

Was it like this in Infinity War? I want to be excited for Doomsday but it really feels like a OOOO LOOK AT THIS Ooo from the trailer

6

u/AppalachianMusic 3h ago

I think it was to a much lesser extent. From what I remember from stories of the shoot they did have stand-ins for certain scenes that were edited out later and replaced with the real actor. But that was mostly to due with the large high profile cast and schedules not lining up and less to do with flying by the seat of their pants.

2

u/Great-Trifle2810 4h ago

If you have to keep the plot that secret your movie is dogshit, and not worth watching imo. A good story needs to work even if you know what is going to happen, and the trailer spoils who is in the movie anyway.

9

u/No-Television-9862 7h ago

This was confirmed in endgame also

5

u/FatherDotComical 4h ago

In order to prevent leaks and keep the acting as authentic as possible we blindfolded all of the actors, moved them to a remote location, and didn't give them a script. We told them to say things that vaguely fit their character and a couple quips we can put in the trailer. It sure was expensive and a pain in the ass to CGI out all the blindfolds but it sure was worth it in the end.

Why does Doomsday feel like it was shot in a backyard? The scale feels really small.

203

u/Snowappletini 8h ago

Bad cinematography and overreliance on star power. The Disney way.

Edit: By the overreliance I mean they shot these movies in a way you can always see the actor's face, making the shots tighter and constrained.

66

u/Marble05 7h ago

Also the actors are always in neat scenes full body visible. Every group scene must have them standing far apart so they can always be recognized, mid fight they'll still be pristine in the eyes of the camera.

71

u/bandit4loboloco 8h ago

It's Disney, so they probably used The Volume, which is warehouse sized at best. If you film that wrong, it feels small.

23

u/SaggyBollock 6h ago

I worked on a fight sequence on it last summer at Pinewood. And a few other second unit bits.

Imagine a set the size of a football pitch. Surrounded by blue screen.

I was there for months.

21

u/HikariAnti 6h ago

This is literally just skill issue (and probably time). People made amazing movies with literal painted backgrounds, you can't get much more constrained than that.

Volume is an amazing tool but it's often used awfully, it's like someone used a generic UE5 background and shoot it on an iPhone.

9

u/IAmGeeButtersnaps 4h ago

It's why every room looks like a semi circle even when they aren't in a room

→ More replies (1)

17

u/aarswft 6h ago

It's The Volume. Everything Disney makes now is shot on it. That's why every interior shot is round. Every outdoor shot has a giant horizon, but people only stand 15' from each other. It's bullshit.

5

u/Prestigious_Leg2229 3h ago

2

Every movie mcu descending into CW tier, They literally look like they unboxed their cosplay five minutes ago. zero scuffs, zero wear and tear, and that flat lighting makes them look like plastic action figures poorly green screened into a PS3 cutscene. It's so unbelievably fake

66

u/Marble05 7h ago

I'm curious how many scenes had all the cast together and how many had people standing around in front of the green screen being spliced together in post production, together with the special effects.

8

u/Several-Squash9871 3h ago

Makes me think of that time when Ian McKellen (Gandalf) broke down on the hobbit? I think, because he couldn't take just acting with a bunch of green screens around him all the time instead of having his fellow cast members around him to act with.

39

u/Particular_Month_301 7h ago

"Action figures in their clear plastic packaging" is my thought every time. Everything in MCU films (apart from maybe Iron Man) looks artificial and plasticky.

Hey don't slander the first two seasons of The Flash. Gloriously, intentionally corny. They knew what they were doing and I loved it.

Season 3 was good but showing cracks and then it all went downhill.

9

u/Snakestream 7h ago

Hey now, CW shows are fascinating in their own right, like watching a car crash as it's happening. Mcu movies are just getting more and more... forgettable, for lack of a better term. It's like drinking a glass of water and then pissing it back out a couple hours later.

6

u/KrytenKoro 6h ago

Supergirl/Flash crossover where they're "stealthily infiltrating" the Dominators facility, so they all stroll in together to the big warehouse, right through the front door, everyone looking directly at the big display in the middle that they vocally identify as a trap and no one even glancing at the hiding spots or walkways that the villain was in fact hiding on.

The Tom Cruise movie Oblivion I think started it. The set where they're at their sky base, that's a screen surrounding it. And honestly it worked really well, especially since the rest of the movie filmed in real places.

you know, there's a good chance Dune 3 gets far enough along that we will get the "would you still love me if I was a worm" moment

I’m a big comics fan and have seen all the mcu films, good and bad. There is nothing that could have me more hyped for doomsday over dune 3, easily the best sci fi adaptation on this generation.
