The core and peel have the highest amounts of Bromelain among the parts you'd touch. That's the thing that straight up f's you up. So guess who gets tempted every time he cuts one up to get 'those extra bits of pineapple' from the cuttings and then 30 minutes later his tongue and lips feel like they're being torn apart.

I've been told that if you soak it in water with salt, that minimizes that effect. But of course, if you're craving that pineapple right away, then you're on your own.

Yeah that would work as Bromelain denatures at 140-176º F, and microwaving for ~45-60 secs will typically get a whole serving of pineapple chunks up to this temp.

Yeah pineapple actually kind of “digests” your mouth when you eat it because of an enzyme called bromelain, which breaks down proteins in your mouth and can cause it to almost be like burns if you eat a ton of it!

Its a dangerous marinade, leave it on a little too long and your meat breaks downs in a bad way. Many, if not most Al Pastor recipes don't actually use the fresh pineapple in the marinade, especially if they are the traditional ones on the big ass trompo. The meat takes so long to cook that the center would be mush by the time it was exposed to the heat.

At my wedding reception I had golden pineapple with fairy lights as centerpieces that we ate with crepes the next morning. When I go for Brazilian BBQ I'm chowing down on nearly as much grilled pineapple as meat 🍍

Also Canadian. Always hated pineapple. Went to Maui, tried some pineapple from my then-wife's plate. It tasted like freaking juicy candy. Incredible. Now I go to Maui for two things - a fish burger from Coconut's Fish Cafe in Kihei and pineapple. Oh and the beach or whatever.

brother we down here in the States get the crappiest pineapples too.

I go to the stores and every time I look in the pile they're like 99.9% low quality. And people still grab them – perpetuating the cycle! I'm like damn if only they knew how much better & juicier real ripe ones taste. The core on a real ripe one is so soft & juicy you can basically eat the whole thing.

You can see on the one in the video how golden it is throughout, and how green the crown leaves are still (so it hasn't had time to suck the juice dry out of the pineapple). Another fast, 3rd test is a leaf in the center of the crown should very easily pluck out with very little pull required.

If you ever get to a tropical country like the Philippines, my god they're living in luxury with the most delicious pineapples and mangos. You pull up to literally any stand and they're just loaded with the most ripe, delicious fruit.

It’s true. I would have said the same thing except back in June one of my friends surprised us at a meet up with some pineapple she specifically ordered from Hawaii ( see then uses parts to grow more). It was the sweetest I had ever tasted and that included the core. It was also less acidic.

I got told once that the core has some compound in it that gets used in headache medication. Since then whenever I cut a pineapple, I store the chopped up core in the freezer to use in smoothies.

I’ve never actually used the core in a smoothie, but it’s the thought that counts, right? (Also, no source on that headache thing…maybe just internet BS. 🤷‍♂️)

Jamaica makes no sense when it comes to the pricing of things. The same things that are grown in Jamaica, are cheaper once they’re shipped to other countries. But more expensive within the country

I find US pineapples (are they Mexican? Hawaiian?) kinda bland. Theyre sweet, but they aren’t super flavorful in comparison to the yellower varieties you find in more tropical places. Same applies to papayas, mangoes and many tropical fruit. Many tropical fruits don’t travel long distances too well

There are very few pineapples grown in Hawaii anymore. The Dole Plantation on Oahu doesn’t export at all; they’re all kept there for use in the gift shop and cafe.

Refrigerated containerized shipping has become so efficient that it’s cheaper for a Hawaiian grocery store to buy pineapples grown in the Caribbean than to get them locally, where production costs are significantly higher.

I frequently ate pineapple when I lived in the Dominican Republic and I can confirm that it’s way better than anything we regularly see in the US.

When I went to India they had these delicious red bananas, shorter and fatter and very little curve. The flesh was chewy like a marshmallow and sweet like vanilla ice cream.

10 minutes! Chop the flower top off, then the bottom, then slice strips of the skin off. The rest it just easy chipping. It really only takes 2-4 minutes to chop a pineapple up.

Try rinsing it in water after cutting it. It’ll wash a bit of the enzyme away. My mom used to get sores in her mouth, but now that they’ve started rinsing it, she no longer does.

has no one here ever carved a pineapple before? you have to cut out and remove the hard and inedible inner core. (which in the video is now the top part of each slice in the bag, you can see it's a different color.) this is why canned pineapple slices come in rings and why sliced pineapple has that specific shape where the core was cut out.

My complaint is he lost all that juice in a trash can when he could have a bowl on a table next to a trash can where the bowl catches the juice and excess hits a bag that the contents gets composted.
