I wanted to give you all a quick update.
I’ve now been successfully treated for no-burp syndrome (R-CPD)! My first Botox injection (50 units) unfortunately didn’t really work. A fun fact is that I was the first patient ever to receive this treatment at that particular hospital and in my region (Gothenburg, Sweden).

Six months later, I went back and received 75 units. I could tell right away that it was working. At first, I had to turn my head to the right to get the burps out, but after about 2–3 weeks, that was no longer necessary.

Now, 1.5 years later, I’ve almost forgotten what it was like not being able to burp, but I’m still incredibly grateful every day. No more weird throat noises. No more excessive gas. No more worrying about what to drink or when.

For anyone who’s on the fence about getting the treatment, my advice is simple: do it!!

I got the Botox treatment last summer and it didn’t fully work – I gained the ability to “croak” by turning my head, but that’s felt more like a sound effect than a relief. The procedure definitely had a minor effect, and I’ve gotten ‘real’ burps once a month or so.

Fast forward till now…over the past few weeks, I’ve been burping spontaneously! Nothing crazy, maybe 1 small burp every other day. Compared to before, though, that’s a big shift.

Has this happened to anyone else? I haven’t changed my diet or anything, so I’m curious why my Burp Ability might be kicking into gear a year after Botox.

I am on Day 6 post Botox and everything has gone so well!! The only issue so far, is I wake up in the middle of the night with what I believe to be laryngospasm based off Dr Bastians description on YouTube. I will have a massing gasp for air but it feels almost like choking. It happens fast and only last a second or so. Mostly it is just scary. Overall, absolutely 0 regrets from the botox. This has been the only real negative. The "slow swallow" has actually not been bad at all. I expected way worse. Overall burps are getting bigger every day and I am learning the mechanics of it. The VAST majority of my bloating is already going away and my baseline has improved massively. I wish I did this years ago!!!

Had the Botox procedure in office about 36 hours ago! The feeling was weird, more uncomfortable than anything else. The needle did not hurt at all, but it was definitely weird feeling a needle poking around my esophagus.

I woke up this morning with an awful sore throat, and have been fighting that all day. Slow swallow has already kicked in, and is making it hard to eat. It is a weird feeling for sure, but right now is bearable.

I’ve had 2 micro burps today, and I can’t wait for more!

So I got into an ENT who treats R-CPD and got the scope put up my nose and the basics. Long story short- she said that I meet all of her criteria that she would usually treat for the condition, but due to me stating that it was "difficult to eat because I get full so fast and eating/drinking more makes me feel like I need to throw up," she does not want to pursue treatment yet.

Instead, she referred me to a GI Dr where she basically wants me to do a bunch of other tests, including an endoscope and other panels. While I am willing to jump through these hoops since I've been living with this as long as I can remember, I am concerned with how fast this might stack up financially since the first appointment was only 15 minutes and cost me $500. Is it normal to have to go through a bunch of stuff with other doctors? Or would it be better for me to just find a new ENT who's more direct? I am just frustrated bc I feel like I clearly meet the criteria, and she even said that, but now, out of an abundance of caution, I am abt to have to spend who knows how much money before I even get to do the already expensive procedure.

Any input would be greatly appreciated as I am so new to this process!

For reference, I had the treatment done on Monday under general anaesthetic. My throat has been really sore and on day 1 and 2 I was coughing a lot also. Today (Wednesday) my throat has improved a lot and I think I'm starting to see some early signs of slow swallowing (I feel like I have to swallow 2/3 times to actually get food down my throat, and swallowing is pretty painful).

I haven't experienced any microburps at all yet, and I'm starting to get a bit stressed about it. For others who have had a successful botox treatment, how long did it take for you to start experiencing the microburps, and is it normal for it to take a few days?

Hi everyone! Just wanted to update you all. It’s been about 5 hours or so after my procedure. My throat is sore and painful like a sore throat but a lil worse. I think I had a micro burp on the ride home!! but maybe it was just me being loopy from the anesthesia.

I went under general anesthesia, intubated. So the soreness and Botox treatment is a double whammy.

Please ask away, as the days progress and I heal :) I’m excited for relief despite the discomfort right now. Oh! And it hurts to talk so I’ll be a mime for awhile.

What should I know 🫪

I had my initial appointment with Dr. Tibbets at Jefferson and was given an out of pocket estimate of about $5k (insurance would cover about $18k). This is way more than I was expecting, and I definitely can’t afford it. Has anyone had the treatment done in the Philadelphia area that didn’t undergo GA?

I’ve felt some level of bloating almost every day for as long as I can remember. And like many of you here I cannot burp and regularly experience loud gurgling and chest pain. Once or twice a year one may slip out, but that’s pretty much it.

I was relieved when I found out about RCPD and immediately tried to get an appointment. However, this condition is barely recognized in my home country, even at the best hospital here that ranks in the top 100 globally. Botox in the neck is viewed as controversial.

Instead I was advised that not everyone burps and it’s more reasonable to identify the root cause of the bloating. Long story short, after a series of testing I was diagnosed with SIBO. Apparently, with proper medication and diet control, my condition should improve. But I can’t help but wonder if this is it. Am I to accept that not being able to burp is normal. If the bloating is gone then I should no longer worry about not being to burp?

So my question is this. Has anyone been diagnosed with SIBO. If yes, were you able to treat it with medication and diet.

I live in Northern Ireland but can't find anywhere to get the injection without being knocked out.

This is for financial reasons, I have been to see a Dr Mark Adams at Kingsbridge hospital in Belfast however the only option there for treatment is costing 6k and that just isn't an option for me.

I have also been told about a Dr Mark Rafferty in Dublin at St Vincent hospital, I'm not sure on the price but he also only offers the testament under general anaesthesia.

Symptoms are getting worse the older I get I have found so I am considering even going to England for treatment!

Any help?

Hello fellow no-burpers, I am wondering if anyone has experience with taking antidepressants + Having no-burp. Is it possible that RCPD gets worse at first? Anyone have a good explanation from their doctor?

I have been treated with botox almost 6 months ago and it was going reasonably well, but the last week I've suddenly gotten worse. I notice burping gets harder, more symptoms. I started doing a ton of shaker exercises again, drinking extra carbonation, but it doesn't seem to be doing anything much at all... :( I've just started antidepressants so I was wondering if it could be related. I don't think the psychiatrist knows about the interaction with R-CPD, so I was hoping anyone has experience with this.

I haven't been able to burp my entire life, and the gurgling and bloating has just been getting worse with age. I have an appt to do the in-office botox with Dr. Pittman this week.

He did mention there can be uncontrollable burping after the procedure, which made me nervous - my job is basically talking to people all day over zoom, sometimes giving large presentations. How big of a deal is it? Do you really warn people?

The appointment itself went really well; I was scoped (tried without numbing but ended up needing it), diagnosed with cricopharyngeus muscle dysfunction, and given a plan to schedule the Botox treatment. The scheduling team called me the next day and I got scheduled for August. But I just received my estimate and unfortunately I can’t afford the $5k out of pocket cost. Insurance is covering over $18k which is awesome, I just wasn’t expecting my out of pocket to be that high so I’m feeling a little bummed.

Another success story! I've been a long time no burper - only realised about 3-4 years ago that it wasn't normal to have zero burping ability.

I spent the best part of the last 9 month air vomiting because it gave so much relief. Once you realise the bloating and throat gargle noises aren't normal! I nearly signed up for the botox but came across the BERP protocol and decided to give it a red hot go https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/40662408/. I honestly can't believe it but THEY WORKED. I am now a burping MACHINE. My stomach is so much less bloated! I can breathe easier when I run. It's crazy how much of a difference such a small thing makes.

My main next question - I'm burping a tonne. Like 5-6 times after a meal. Is that normal? How do people manage to do this subtly in social situations, will it become easier to burp more silently?

I got 100 units of Botox nearly 2 weeks ago and feel so much better. So I thought I’d share for anyone wanting to know more about post op. No more bloating, no chest tension after eating or drinking, and almost no croaking at all. Microburps are still constant after eating or drinking any thing even water but I’m starting to have larger burps and feeling relief with those.

Only gripe is the slow swallow. I never did a liquid diet after the procedure just ate normally just slower and chewed more and CHUGGED water. (Like 40oz of water minimum per meal) Only had one choking scare where I needed the heimlich but that was mostly my fault and not as much a slow swallow problem.

I saw a lot of people talk about horrible acid reflux after the procedure but I have to say I think mine improved? I had HORRIBLE acid reflux for years. Somehow I think mine is better after the Botox. I take a OTC Pepcid every now and then but nothing regularly.

All that to say. Everyone’s post op is different but I hope this encourages someone to get the procedure and seek some relief.

I'm just under 2 weeks post-Botox and I am burping yay! The burps aren't perfect, I'm still practicing a lot, but they're def there. I'm still gurling a bit and bloating.

Do I just need to get a better handle on it? Did it take anyone a little while for symptom relief? I'm wondering if I'm just taking in more air than usual so it's canceling out the positive effects of burping.

I’m curious to see if anyone with RCPD has also experienced chronic constipation as well? I noticed as the years have progressed with this I’ve had more heartburn and constipation. I have had the Botox so I am hoping that if they are related that this will help that as well! Just wanted to see others experience as well.

Literally. 2 years ago I began developing LPR/reflux and started panicking, thinking it was caused by my inability to burp. I spent months teaching myself to burp, and even though I felt like I would never be able to I did it. It was so exciting being able to burp for the first time in my life. But… the reflux didn’t go away. Luckily though, neither did the burping.

Well, 2 months ago I finally decided to make the switch from my hormonal IUD, which I had for 3 years to a copper IUD for unrelated reasons. Guess what!!! Suddenly my reflux is fading, after all this time. And now I’m realizing that I taught myself to burp for no reason.

I’m still happy though. Having the IUD sucked but I don’t think I’d be burping today if I hadn’t had it. What a strange journey I’ve had. Years and years of stomach problems are coming to an end 🥳🥳🥳

i called a few private clinics in the uk and they all let me know that I'll have to wait till I'm 18 to get botox. Is this really the case? I really want to get this issue sorted soon cus its affecting my daily life :/

Hi, everyone! This group has honestly been such a lifesaver, so I wanted to share an update on my journey in case it helps someone else.

I have R-CPD and found Dr. King in Broomfield through recommendations here. I had my consultation with him, and he was absolutely fantastic. After an endoscopy and a thorough discussion of my symptoms, he confirmed that I have R-CPD. He was incredibly knowledgeable about the condition, the procedure, potential side effects, and took the time to answer all of my questions. I left feeling really reassured.

My procedure is scheduled for August 13th, and I'll definitely come back and share my experience afterward!

In the meantime, if anyone has questions about the consultation or the process so far, I'm happy to answer them.

One other note: Dr. King does not accept UnitedHealthcare, so I'm expecting my out-of-pocket cost to be higher. Once I have the final bill, I'm happy to share those details too if anyone is interested.

hi ! i’m like 2 months post botox and was wondering if there’s any foods you no longer like after being able to burp? i used to LOVE salmon and fish and now i don’t like it that much bc the fishy burp is so gross ….

My ENT doctor told me it took longer for me because my neck was thin, so she had to be more precise. I did not realize it was so painful. Did anyone else find this procedure extra shitty, or just me? Usually I can tolerate pain, but it felt like she hit every nerve in the back of my neck and shoulders.

How soon did everyone start burping! And how soon did the pain post procedure go away? I can’t imagine having to get this again. I’d truly probably ask to be put under, not to freak anyone out and she told me mine was different and she had to “wiggle things around a lot more”
