WWYD? Vent/Rant Neighbor filed a lien against my house

Neighbor filed a lien against my house because I filed a complaint to the county for violating a county ordinance.

To be clear, I have never contracted with them for construction work/services and don’t have any contracts in place with them or debt owed to them of any kind.

How is this a valid lien? I am now being forced to hire a lawyer to defend myself and don’t really have the financial means to do so. It really feels like I am GUILTY until proven innocent and not the other way around.

Vent/Rant Neighbor calling lawyer over weeds

My husband and I bought a home together going on 3 years ago. The driveway is shared with said neighbor which is important. Upon moving in our neighbor invited us over for coffee. She discussed she's disabled and chatted us about stuff for a minute or so and asked for our numbers. She explained she goes to New York half the year and wanted to text us when she'd come back so she could have the driveway. She said the rest of the year it's free for us but because of her disability she'd prefer we let her have the driveway. Seeing no issue we agreed and exchanged numbers.

Come winter of year one. Neighbor left and our area of PA got slammed with snow. Feet of it overnight. We piled the snow where we could which was the driveway. We received no call of warning when she came home. She came to our door demanding we move the snow which is now a pile of ice so she could park. We told her she was supposed to contact us and that there was no where to put the snow so we did what we had to. We helped chip away some snow because we felt bad but she had another neighbor snow plow it for her.

The snow also destroyed our outdoor patio set we didn't put away in time. Canopy knocked over and all sort of stuff. Our neighbor, in the spring starts taking pictures of our backyard which we have on camera. She also started coming into the property and bringing other people with her to show her all the destruction. She complained we were horrible house owners and that shed call someone about it.

We proceeded to hang up signs that stated do not enter and that it was private property. There is clear distinction from our side and hers when it comes to the shared driveway. Also that she was being monitored on the camera and ignored that. She continued to come into our property yanking our plants she said she was allergic too and overall being an ass.

So I called the cops. I said she's trespassing on our property and that I don't want her old ass falling on my porch and me being responsible for it somehow. Cop spoke to her and she had nothing valid to say outside of we were horrible owners and and openly admitted to trespassing and ignoring us when we told her to stop through the camera. Cop came back to us and said she's 75 and that if she continues to call again. We got a number for the incident but that was all.

Over the past 3 years she keep complaining about how we park. We have a roommate who parks in front of our neighbors home because our neighbor has the driveway and uses it. But she's complained he can't do that. We ignored her. He parked across the street and she complains he can't do that because she can't back out of the driveway as well. We ignored that too. We let her use the driveway. That's the only kindness we allotted this woman.

Now going on 3 years later she still has a bug up her ass. Mind you we do not engage with this woman. We don't talk. We don't do anything. She approached my husband today regarding weeds. She said she's contacting a lawyer because we are unfit for our home and take horrible care of it.

Admittedly we do have weeds but we don't really have a front yard only two big bushes that are fine and some overgrown dandelion and maybe some thistle. I know even if she does call a lawyer we get a warning if our weeds are over 10 inches but we intend to yank them but like what the hell.

Id hate to instigate her further but I don't want to go yank a dandelion or two because of this woman! I know it's small but jeez nothing we do is good for her. We don't even really go outside either in fear she will be there to complain. Our house is fine. We keep letting her use the driveway. But like she just wants to control our home. I don't even know what we could do in retaliation if it's even worth it. We have camera and recorded evidence of her trespassing and being an overall pain in the butt but like when should enough be enough? What could we even do?

Update: thanks everyone for listening to the vent. Parking and driveway wise we are still fine parking directly in front of our house for now but thank you for all the advice. It's nice to know we aren't missing something and here.

WWYD? Vent/Rant Neighbors have made a false accusation against me. I thought they were moving soon, but doesn’t appear to be the case.

Upvotes

I have some horrible neighbors who rent a house across from me. They are pretty trashy; broken cars on the front lawn, loud, lots of people coming and going. I wouldn’t be surprised if there were drugs involved. One of them has falsely accused me of stalking. This is very, completely untrue and this person has been arrested for making a false statement to the police before in a totally unrelated situation. So definitely not the first time this person has lied. They harass me every time I go outside and have tried to break into my home before. It’s been a nightmare.

The house went into foreclosure in Feb/March and was bought by a bank. The house was put up for sale this Spring, but then the listing was taken down. I thought they would be moving at the beginning of the Summer and this would all take care of itself, but they are still there and show no sign of leaving. I’m not sure if it is because of tenant rights and they have to wait until the lease is up (I live in New York State), but I’m terrified they are going to remain there indefinitely even with the foreclosure. I saw another reddit post where the same bank possessed a foreclosed home and the resident remained there for over 3 years.

Is there a legal way for me to tell when they have to vacate the premises? I don’t understand why a bank would sit on a house for so long unless there was some kind of legal/tenants rights issue. I’m half tempted to reach out to the bank and pretend to be an interested buyer to see if I can squeeze out any information.

WWYD? Vent/Rant Advice for a next door Karen

I never thought I’d have to post about a neighbour but here we are, strap in for some pettiness.

Context: UK
My next door neighbour is an absolute Karen, everyone on the street despises her. She takes it upon herself to police parking (parking is plentiful and no one struggles for a space or cares). She doesn’t drive but kicks off at anyone who parks in the space in front of her house.

She knocks on people’s doors when she thinks someone isn’t doing their bit to ‘up keep the appearance of the street’. E.g telling another neighbour to paint his fence.

She also managed to scare off my other next door neighbour who was renting on the other side of me by threatening legal action because she was smoking cigarettes in her own back garden.

She recently shouted at me for having a bbq in summer as she wanted to have her windows open. I did have it placed as far away from the property as possible down the end of the garden.

I have always tried to remain neutral and polite even though I can’t stand her.

THE ISSUE AT HAND CURRENTLY:

A month or two ago I asked if she minded if I painted my side of her fence, as she technically owns one side of the fencing in my garden. She agreed and said that’s fine. Fast forward to last week and she decides she’s going change all the fencing (: it now is a completely different colour to the fencing on the other side of my garden.

I have a clematis climbing one of the fence panels so had to unpin it while the change was taking place, and then I bought new paint so I could paint them to match the fencing on the other side of the garden again.

The other night I went out just to paint the one panel my clematis was on so I could pin it back up. She shouted from her window that she was going to buy some ‘nice natural stain’ for it and whether I could wait before changing. I said ideally I want both sides of my fence to match and needed to get it done before my clematis started dying. Her issue was that she said she didn’t want to paint to seep through, so I told her that I would be careful and she can come down and check that none is seeping through on the one panel I painted, and to let me know if there was an issue- I heard nothing.

The following day I began to pin my clematis up, when she calls me over to show me a Google search outlining that I do not have the right to do anything to her fence including painting. I asked what her problem was exactly as we had discussed the day before, but she just walked off. Weird.

Anyways, I feel like it was a low key threat of legal action if I was to continue, because that’s the kind of woman she is. Where can I go from here? I’ve now got completely mismatched fences with only one painted on her side. It’s the pettiest shi ever.

Half of me wants to start retaliating but I have a cat who is my world and I’ve read horror stories about people harming people’s pets etc. I just don’t really know what to do or what to expect from her moving forward.

All this over fences, Jesus Christ

WWYD? Vent/Rant Neighbors constantly disrespect shared washer and dryer

I live in a 5 unit townhome/apartment building and we all share 1 washer and dryer. I notice some people always leave their pet hair in the washer and don’t clean up the lint catcher.

I told my landlord and they sent out a reminder to everyone to keep the washer/dryer clean but I think 1 person is still not doing it.

On top of that I notice there’s a foul mildew smell because of the pet hair and because of leaving the washer dryer closed. So I wrote a very friendly note saying

“Hi all, I noticed there’s a bit of a mildew smell in the washer. I ran a clean cycle and read online to leave the door open between washes to let it air out properly. Sharing in case this helps!”

I checked the next day and someone did laundry without keeping the door open or cleaning the pet hair in the drum. Am I overreacting about this? I have a pet too so I understand but I wouldn’t want someone else’s laundry to have all my pet hair or be washed in potential mold?

I just feel weird because I’m one of the newer tenants and really don’t want to cause problems. My next door neighbor has been living here for 20 years and has already been snarky to me about other things.

Other Annoying neighbors

Upvotes

I have very annoying neighbors that are very noisy all times of the day and night. Playing loud music to having yelling fights with their spouse. Yes I have called the cops a few times but they have done nothing. Normally I would not care but when I ask nicely for them to turn it down sometimes (someone in my house works nights) I’m always met with hostility. I’ve only asked like three times because of this. So I’m wondering if anyone has any recommendations on a good bt speaker? Any suggestions is greatly appreciated

WWYD? Vent/Rant Neighbors moving my trash cans, help!

Hi, wondering if there’s anything I can do about this.

Just moved into a walk-up and we have both spots in a two car garage out back. Neighbors have no garage but use that same area on their back property to park.

Along our garage on their side is some shrubbery.

Two trash cans are placed on either side of our garage. Our neighbors haven’t said anything to us but they keep moving one trash can or shifting them both so they line up with the edge of the garage, effectively blocking the garage so I cannot park. I need to move the cans every time to be able to get in.

The garage is very small, so even just 1-2ft is enough to block my entryway.

Although the trash can does go just a bit over their property, I’m just so frustrated because all it does is go 1-2ft MAX and it only “blocks” the shrubbery. It does not block where they park or walk—unless they literally mount the bush and walk on top of it.

I don’t know which neighbor it is(3 separate floors of tenants). No note has been left ever, they just keep shifting them.

What can I do? I’m just really annoyed at how un-neighborly they’re acting, I’d be happy to consider if they have some sort of reason why they need that space, but from my perspective it quite clearly doesn’t do anything at all to them. Additionally, our neighbors on the other side have a similar situation, and we happily let them shift their cans onto our property since it only blocks shrubbery! No discussion or mention of it at all needed there.

They’ve now resorted to moving the second trash can to the other side(now the full 3-4 ft in front of the garage), completely blocking the second car in the garage (also ours, but not used multiple time a day right now like mine is). Any advice appreciated, thanks!

ETA: thanks for the advice, it’s been resolved! I’ve moved the can off the left neighbors’ property and moved the right neighbors’ can off my property to fit my can, so I guess moving their cans to park is their problem now. I think I was caught up trying to make everyone able to move their cars with ease, but I get encroaching on others’ space can be taken as a “you give an inch they take a mile” situation too. Thanks!

WWYD? Vent/Rant I want to take legal action

TL;DR: neighbors placed camera to watch our backyard. So we put up a fence for privacy and they moved the camera to a higher window to see over the fence. I want to take legal action based on the many moments of harassment and false claims to the police made against us by them.

Context: All of this has been going on over the course of 6 years that we’ve lived here. We live next to an couple in their 60’s that are retired. I’ll call the husband B, and the wife L. Me and my husband have two young children and a dog. I’m not exaggerating when I say we’ve done nothing to these people. It’s been one sided harassment for 6 years but we’ve given them the benefit of the doubt up until now. For two of those years, L has pretended to be friendly with me, my children, and dog. Here’s a list of what they’ve done.

- L puts note in our mailbox warning us not to mow in her yard around the telephone pole. (Fair enough)
-L gives my dog rotten frozen marrow bones that ended up making my dog violently ill. (Yes I took them in good faith believing she was being friendly)
-L accuses me of stealing her flower pots. (I didn’t…)
-L was captured on our cameras in the OPPOSITE side of our yard snooping. Not even near her property. She went to the other side of our house and around to the back. (Don’t ask why we didn’t call the cops. We were young and dumb)
-L complains that our dog peed in her yard and burned the grass. (My dog didn’t, but I moved my dogs tie out further away and just apologized to keep the peace.)
-L&B call the city on us for a blight violation. (City officer said we’re fine and there was no violation.)
-L&B have their lawn service guy mow around a tree on the property line, which made him cut into our landscaping project twice.

This now brings us to the current situation.

So my husband calls to ask them kindly to let their lawn guy know to not mow in our yard. Well they start accusing my husband of being a drunk. (We don’t even drink) And they hang up on him. So then L texts him saying her lawn guy mowing our lawn was just “tit for tat” and accusing my husband of being drunk mowing our yard. So I go out to my backyard to place logs on my property so the guy can’t mow into our yard. That’s when I see L recording me in her window with her phone. So I flip her off. Then I call the cops to make a complaint that she’s recording me, and I guess she had already called them to complain about god knows what. That same night I hear someone at 10:30pm outside my window banging on my air conditioner. We run out and find a dead mouse on the air conditioner that had been dead for a while because it stank. We called the cops again knowing it was B, but we didn’t have proof. Cops told us to put up cameras or get a fence for our peace of mind. So we set up security cameras again since we had taken them down a few months ago to save money. A few days later we notice a camera in the same window L was standing in to record me on her phone. It was facing our backyard. So we start building a fence to block their camera. Then we get a permit warning from the city. Apparently they complained that we were feeding birds in our backyard, too. God forbid someone has a bird feeder. So today we applied for the permit so we could continue building the fence and guess what I see. They moved the camera from the spot it was in, to a higher window above their porch door so they could see over our fence. Mind you, they already have a camera covering their backyard facing the other direction so there is no need for this other camera in their window other than to spy and harass us. Mind you, I have CHILDREN that play in our yard and will be in diapers and underwear at any given moment to play in water. So them watching my kids is beyond inappropriate.
We’re having the police come out again to file a complaint about the moved camera. But this whole ordeal has been so stressful and emotionally distressing, I want to take legal action. I’m going to obtain the police report she filed against me to know what false claims she made. I’m scraping for anything I have legally against them. And I’m kicking myself for not calling the cops when she was snooping in our yard on camera two years ago. WWYD?

Edit: Thank you everyone for all your suggestions- the serious ones and the snarky ones 😆 we will be reading through them all and any new comments. We appreciate all the validation. A cop came out today and was able to suggest they move the camera and that it was concerning us since our kids play outside. They said they would think about it only if we moved our side camera first. Our side camera is not pointed directly at their yard and only got some of the yard in the background. They are also never in their yard ffs. But fine, we tillted it down more. So I will make an update in a few days or so if anyone is interested in this drama.

Vent/Rant Seething with anger

Context: very rural, the county sherrif does animal control. They will show up in 3 hours or 3 days and say well the problem animal isn't here right now, I can't do anything, you know you could just shoot it on your property. They don't care about video. Only "catching the perp red pawed" . Video apparently a civil complaint.

NFH had 2 large breed unaltered dogs that turned to 12 as unaltered animals do. Some died. A pack of 9 terrorized the hood. Killing livestock chasing pedestrians, spreading garbage. Ultimately something sacred these assholes and they hauled off 8 dogs.

Peace for 3 months. Today I say a random stray pit bull breeding their OG Mastiff. WTF. WTF. WTF. What a pile of human garbage lives 5 acres away from me. They are not too poor to spay, I've offered the 50$ Vet clinic and my own money. They drive fancy cars, have landscaping every year, and told me to fuck right off. They just don't care about the dogs or the neighbors.

WWYD? Vent/Rant Sheriffs office called to inquire about the neighborhood feud

So we’ve posted about once a week for the last several week about our neighborhood battle going on.
Its like a real life sitcom that is funny to follow along but we are living it and it’s stressful.

So the sheriffs department called me Thursday last week about this feud we have on our hands wondering what the heck is going on down here... of course the Karen has played innocent and acting like people are threatening them. No proof but claiming it. lol.

They wanted to talk to the neighborhood so I gave them the contacts for all the houses and said they are more than willing to tell you what they know.

I spilled the beans on what’s going on down here and got the sgt’s info to send them evidence. I started looking on our camera storage and discovered some crazy videos.

In one day alone they are chasing our neighbors into their driveway with a car, outside lurking around our property, spitting on a sign as a family, calling cops on us on video while they were spitting, cops come&go, 4 mins later they are back looking for our cameras, then return two more times to try to destroy the cameras with golf balls! They also yelled and voiced what they were doing during this. It’s real damning. Then they returning home to blow horns at 10pm and 10:30 their in a vehicle on our driveway sitting.

We have more but I hope it’s enough for them to finally act on these people. We are getting golf balls thrown at our vehicles and rocks at our kids.
It like a mini version of the summer of love down here and that family is the mostly peaceful protestors assaulting our two families on the corner.

We have shown some friends the videos and they think it’s as crazy as we do. These people are aggressive and laws don’t seem to matter due to their entitlement issues.

What do y’all think? Will they fall through the cracks and be back to harass us after the heat is off them?… or will the cops actually do something about this behavior? We feel targeted in our own homes.

WWYD? Vent/Rant Parking lot NFH

My late FIL's home has a parking lot that is half on his property, and half on the neighbors. The neighbors home was sold, and is rented out. The renters are AWFUL.
They kept creeping into my father in laws parking spaces. To the point where, they started yelling at our family for parking there! My husband told them to get over it, the border is obvious. ( there is a fence line in their back yard that goes through the parking lot). The renter got loud and stupid. Cops were called. They had a survey done showing they had even LESS PARKING than they thought, and the owner put in this wood strip to keep US on our side( LOL)
Now, the renters are ignoring it, and once again, taking up all of the parking.
The spaces are clearly marked with house numbers.
My husband went by yesterday morning, and they had to move cars for him to park. He said something about the survey, and they said yeah, we know all about it.
He left and then I stopped by a few hours later with my son to mow the lawn. They had MOVED THE CARS BACK. I had no place to park, and had to use another neighbor's spot, across the street. Police were called, but didn't show while we were there.
I am heading back over now, and will call the cops AGAIN if they are parked in his clearly labeled parking spots.
This is really getting old.

WWYD? Vent/Rant Neighbor has been harassing us , what can I do? (CT)

I’m a college student who lives at home with mom and siblings and we rent a small house in ct. We’ve been renting for about 8 years now and have never had any issues up until now. We have admittedly have fallen behind on rent and utilities a couple of times, but our landlord has been patient and understanding and has never had an issue with us being late as he knows he will always get his money. My neighbor announced to us that she was selling her house about a month ago and a week after, nobody bought it immediately like she wanted. Ever since then, she has been saying that nobody wants to buy her house due to the fact that our backyard looks “crazy”. She has been harassing my mother, uncle and landlord to remove the things she deems bad and has gone to our town hall to formally submit a complaint, and has even called another department on us. She has told us that someone will come by to look at the house but nobody has said anything to us yet. She has been texting and calling my mom frequently and has stopped her on her way home with my younger siblings to complain about how she’s so upset that she can’t sell her house because of us.

When we started renting, there was a tiny-home like structure in the back and everything was overgrown and visually unappealing. My uncle (mom’s brother) decided to kind of take over the backyard and uses it as a workshop of some sorts and has added a couple of things since then. He doesn’t pay rent or anything, but has a good relationship with our landlord so he has permission from him to do as he pleases. I’m not sure if he has permits for some of the things back there but they’re minuscule things such as having a tent over the grill & propane tanks (for the grill), plants, and a couple of quails (in the tiny home structure). I did some research and everything back there isn’t in violation of anything except maybe this greenhouse-like structure he has for his plants. I also think it’s necessary to mention that he usually maintains the yard to stop it from looking crazy.

We also have an above ground pool that we haven’t used since mom and I are too tired to clean and maintain it constantly, as well as a trampoline and a playground for the kids. All which are not in violation of anything, but somehow neighbor has also blamed the pool for her house not selling and in her words “what if the rust from it seeps into the ground and kills my trees”. The pool isn’t even rusted? There are no fences to fully separate the property lines, and there were trees there but she removed them since they were a hazard and could’ve fallen on her house. Though there’s no physical barrier, the property line has always been respected by both parties.

Her house has 4 bedrooms and 5 baths and we live in a really nice area, but the interior is super outdated. I personally believe that it’s the reason why her house won’t sell. It was built in the 90s and it honestly still looks like it’s in the 90s. She’s a stubborn lady and has told us way before all of this that she loves her furniture the way it is and will never get rid of it. To top it off, she wants 500k more than what its worth. According to her, buyers have hesitated to put in an offer because of the “neighbors next door” and that they think we’re “making drugs or something” under the tent we have for our grill (I think it’s also appropriate to mention that we’re Mexican). We used to host a lot of bbqs and parties that we made sure never bothered her but we had to stop anyways because there was always a problem. My mother and I are aware that we aren’t required to do anything for her, but she would rather avoid any issues altogether so she complied with her requests. We removed the tent over the grill, as well as the tables and chairs that were there, all of which was a lot of work. My mom is a little older so this was a little bit of a struggle for her. We moved the propane tanks out of sight as well. Unfortunately, this was not enough and neighbor proceeded to trespass and inspect our property and texted mom a picture of her in our backyard calling her a liar. She trespassed again a couple of days later and my mom & sibling watched her walk in & out of the yard.

I’m so sick and tired of this lady harassing my family and I have been wanting to go to the police and make a report but I’m honestly not sure if I should. I’m too nervous to talk to my landlord as we are behind on rent again and maybe he’ll get upset with us or something. I’ve tried speaking to her on the phone but she just spent 20 minutes ranting about how she never did anything wrong to us and that we’re basically fucking her over and honestly there’s no reasoning with her. I don’t know what to do, someone please help

WWYD? Vent/Rant Has anyone dealt with a neighbour who repeatedly reports them?

My mum has lived in the same house for 12 years. For the first several years there were no significant issues with the neighbours, but over the last five years things have changed dramatically.

There was an incident where our neighbour believed my sister (or one of her friends) keyed her car. There was never any evidence of who was responsible. My sister has always denied doing it, and my mum has never claimed to know what happened. Despite that, Mum even offered to contribute towards repairing the damage if it would help draw a line under things and restore a good relationship.

Unfortunately, things seem to have escalated rather than improved.

Since then there have been repeated reports to different organisations over what feel like increasingly minor issues. These have included complaints about our family dog barking while visiting (despite plenty of dogs barking in the neighbourhood), complaints about daytime music while family, including children, were visiting, a report to Universal Credit questioning how someone who can't work could spend time gardening (my mum is agoraphobic and gardening is one of the few things she is able to do), and a report claiming my sister had moved back into the property when she has her own home.

None of these things in isolation necessarily seem outrageous. If a neighbour genuinely believes there's a problem, they're entitled to raise it. But after years of repeated complaints, it starts to feel like ordinary day-to-day life is constantly being scrutinised. To the point of bullying and what feels like targeted harassment.

The biggest impact has been on my mum. She now feels anxious in her own home and worries about doing perfectly normal things. My sister has two young daughters, I have a dog, and we've both found ourselves worrying about visiting because we're conscious that normal family life could become the subject of another complaint. Mum relies on us for company and support due to her health, so that's been particularly upsetting.

Outside of our visits, mum sleeps for most of the day, struggling to sleep at night with chronic pain and anxiety, plus the recent addition of a spinal fracture. The insomnia was worsened due to the additional anxiety caused by the last complaint and she rings us having panic attacks.

We're putting together a timeline using Subject Access Requests, correspondence and Ring doorbell footage simply to understand the full picture, because looking at each complaint individually doesn't really reflect what the last few years have felt like.

I'm not really looking for legal advice. I'm more interested in hearing from people who've experienced something similar.

Have you ever had a neighbour who repeatedly reported you over a number of years? Did it eventually stop? Did anyone ever acknowledge the pattern, or did every complaint just continue to be treated as a separate issue? How did you cope with the stress of feeling like you were constantly being watched?

WWYD? Vent/Rant Need advice-neighbor shouting disturbing things

I recently moved in to a duplex, and I’m not sure what to do about my back yard neighbor. I tried introducing myself when I first moved in, but he wouldn’t say anything except “oh” and never offered his name. He is often yelling incoherently or very aggressively yelling the same disturbing phrases over and over again. My guess is either schizophrenia or Tourette’s syndrome. The problem is that what he is saying is quite violent and he is often yelling the n word as well as very vulgar things about women. I’ll be sitting outside reading and it, at times, seems to be when he comes outdoors and begins ranting. Whenever he is ranting I can’t see him, so I’m not sure where he is in his yard or if he can see me. I’m not sure when I should involve any authorities or organizations, or if I should just make a report so it’s on record. If it is Tourette’s I understand it’s not something he can control, but as a woman living alone it is quite alarming at times. Any advice would be great. Thank you!

WWYD? Vent/Rant Neighbors rowdy dogs broke into our yard

Hello everyone! Not too sure if this is the right place to talk about this but I wanted to rant and also get some advice. Some background to my issue: we have been having issues with our neighbors for a couple of months now, at first they had two small dogs that were always outside and constantly barking at my dogs and anyone who stepped into the backyard these dogs would be outside until midnight no matter the climate or if the dogs themselves wanted to be let in.

A few months ago they got two Belgian malinois puppies and the alarm bells immediately started ringing in my head. These puppies are outside the whole day, constantly barking or crying to the point another one of our neighbors had to complain about the noise. Just last night the two puppies broke through the fence and went into our yard (one of them was actually stuck but broke free) my mom was outside when she saw them and had to run inside because they were going up to her and barking. I went to my neighbors door and knocked (very strongly) and no one answered for more than an hour even though all their cars were up front and even their lights were on. I tried again later and they finally answered (but only after the puppies trashed our yard lol) and they went and got the dogs and told us that they’re very playful, that her daughter was watching the dogs and that they thought they were just under their shed. We told them they need to get a fence and they agreed but I don’t have much faith in them since everything they have done has shown that they do not understand how much work it is to have a working dog nor do I think they care that they’re affecting the people around them. I am worried not only for those puppies but for my own dogs especially my reactive dog, he is always supervised and on a long leash when he is outside because I don’t want him getting close to the fence and there being an altercation.

What do you guys think my next steps are here? Should I notify animal services or do you guys think I am blowing this over proportion ? I want to minimize future issues as much as possible.

Vent/Rant Neighbor purposely hanging bumper of car into my driveway

My neighbor hates women and hates me. I bought my house 8 months ago with my husband and he has been a nightmare neighbor since day one. He manipulates and lies. He’s encroached. He lies to my neighbor on the right about me.

I’ve asked him to fix drainage issues he’s caused before with his janky hardscaping that altered the original lay of the land making it flat and all drain on my side. None of our convos are productive because he doesn’t listen to or respect women. He called the cops and said someone broke into their house and that the only enemy he has is me so they suspected me. The cops called bs because he has cameras everywhere yet had no footage.

This guy has serious issues. He’s asked me to tell my husband to come outside as if he intended to fight him to which my husband stood his ground and told him to leave us alone and stop bothering us. Cops have been called in the past by my other neighbors I get along with that live on his left side and have issues with him as well.

Our neighbors across the street also have had parking issues with him and told him not to park near their garage. Another neighbor said he stares at her daily when she’s walking into her house and she feels harassed. So he obviously has multiple neighbors that dislike him because of his odd and selfish behaviors.

Anyway early today I walked around to look at his daughter’s car because she always parks it at the apron of my driveway making it difficult for me to get out. Mind you, only 3 ppl live there. Him, his wife and daughter. But they have 5 vehicles . They also have a 2 car garage and a 3 car driveway yet they only park 1 vehicle in the garage and 3 in the driveway so the daughter parks by my driveway carelessly daily.

Anyway he has a ring camera facing my side and he must have seen me observing how I was going to get out without clipping her and I guess he didn’t like that so he parked his other car with the front bumper sticking out into my driveway tonight. Mind you it’s about the principal.

He has enough space to back up nearer to his driveway but he is doing this purposely. I can easily either park my car into that spot when he moves it again, start placing my trash bins there or call the non emergency line so they can ticket him but I feel like all of these would just escalate his retaliation against me. He might start parking in front of my house on the other side of my driveway.

I already have an ongoing HOA dispute with him regarding his fence being on my gate by 2 inches (again it’s the principle because I’m trying to extend my fence from my gate and I can’t use my own post because he built his fence on my post that he didn’t get permission to build on). Oh yea he lied about that too and photoshopped the survey and sent to the hoa saying he bought the house that way. He made several modifications to his home without hoa permission including extending his driveway to 3 cars which needed a permit from the county. That driveway is causing drainage issues to his neighbor on the left because it’s impeding the flow of water.

Whenever I go outside to garden or water my plants, he comes out like 60 seconds later to water his lawn and grass too. When I hired a landscaper to design my lawn and separate it with stone from my neighbors, he started landscaping the front of his house too and the front of my neighbor to the rights house. I mean I could go on and on about all his odd behaviors. He’s just unreasonable so is my only remedy to move ?

Vent/Rant "you have wrought unspeakable harm"

My spouse and I recently closed on the sale of our home; the buyer is a developer who plans to tear down our existing home to build four townhouses on the lot. We were likely going to list our house for sale within a few years but they reached out to us with an unsolicited offer that was ~60% over market value. Because our city recently relaxed zoning to encourage the construction of more housing, many of the homes that have sold recently in our neighborhood have likewise sold to developers.

We're really sad that our house — which we recently renovated — is being torn down, and that a large mature tree will be removed as well, but we are on a relatively (very) large lot and our city has a housing shortage and affordability crisis so we've somewhat made peace with it.

Our neighbors have not.

We assumed people wouldn't be thrilled about the sale and the buyers plans — no one likes construction noise! — but we massively underestimated the level of ire.

Since our neighborhood was informed of the pending sale a few weeks ago, we have had:

-Neighbor #1 come to our door to confront me

-Neighbor #2 attempt to solicit competing offers on NextDoor (which we weren't seeking, we were already under contract...)

-our NIMBYest city councillor send unsolicited information about another house that was recently torn down, and ask us "how she could help"

-Neighbor #3 had one of my childhood friends reach out to me to try to get more info

-Neighbor #4 messaged us to complain that we had "wrought unspeakable harm" upon the neighborhood, and *in the same breath*, ask that we please keep them updated about the timing of everything.

-Neighbors #4 and #5 come onto our property while we weren't home to hug the tree and measure it; we then put up a "no trespassing" sign

-Neighbor #5, in response to the sign, then gave us a letter in which states, in part they said they just wanted to visit the tree, and to the neighbors credit, they also said in the letter that they won't come onto our property again. (Edit: this definitely isn't hellish behavior we are just feeling overwhelmed)

...and more!

It's worth noting that a few years ago, Neighbor #1 mentioned that they had once requested that the city plant some street trees on our street, but the other neighbors fought it off because they didn't want anything to shade their gardens...

I feel like I am losing my mind. I think the only reason we've managed to avoid (most) in-person confrontation is because we've been avoiding our front yard for weeks, and have all our street-facing curtains drawn. I am a gardener and have been hoping to dig up some of my flower garden to transplant it to my new house, but keep putting it off b/c I'm emotionally exhausted and don't want to deal with any of these people anymore.

Edit: I really should have noted initially that my street is 95% multifamily housing and apartments, that was an idiotic omission. My lot is roughly 3x the size of a normal lot, most of which have two-family homes, so I don't feel that the new plans are entirely out of scale with the neighborhood.

Edit #2: I was trying to be semi-concise in my original post, but the video that shows my neighbors coming onto the property isn't super clear and I didn't actually realize who it was or what was happening when I first watched it. I just saw two people on my property poking around. I figured it could be neighbors, but had no idea what they were doing and why they were there, so put up the no trespassing sign partway down my driveway. After the neighbor sent the letter, I rewatched and what she said was plausible. We hadn't had any issues with Neighbor #5, if she'd asked to come measure the tree and hang out by it we would have let her! Some other neighbors have expressed some level of disappointment but supported our right to sell, and we've been very happy to answer any questions they have.

Vent/Rant Junkyard Eyesore (and apparently a Socialist?)

Had this neighbor move in 4 years ago. Seemed polite enough at first - young guy in his 30s who just bought his first house. I noticed after a few weeks that his yard was unkept. I politely pulled him for a chat, talking about pride of ownership and even offering him help with the yard work.

The guy flat out tells me “I’ll take care of whatever the town enforces, but I don’t care about the aesthetics. If it bothers you, I’m sorry.”

What an attitude, right?! At that point, I couldn’t really so anything except call the town whenever his property gets overgrown. So he does take care of it now and then, but that doesn’t change the fact that it looks unsightly 75% or the time.

Things start to get worse as this neighbor’s hobby seems to be accumulating mechanical trash… lawn mowers, 30 year old cars, even a non-running tow truck! He has a trailer for a crappy “racecar” that he parks in his driveway with all the junk (even though he could hide said trailer next to his garage).

He also did a burnout in his driveway (I’ll admit not long - it was however long it takes for a garage door to open ) which woke up my wife, but apparently is okay since it was 5 PM.

Things took a turn for the worst when he was working on his race car one day (which apparently involves idling incessantly).

I politely asked him to refrain from doing this (it’s illegal in New Jersey), explaining how the fumes bother my wife and I when we’re trying to enjoy our backyard. The little twerp immediately got nasty with me, telling me to call the police and that it’s “his property.” I tell him it’s a residential neighborhood and he should find somewhere more suitable to repair vehicles.

The police did come (multiple times now), but they told him that he’s not breaking any laws since he’s working on the vehicle (WTF?!) Apparently it’s okay to make both noise and air pollution if it’s a “hobby” now ?

Now my neighbor will talk badly about me and my wife to our other surrounding neighbors, even if we’re outside and clearly in earshot.

The neighbor has also made multiple Wi-Fi names “Eyesore Junkyard” and “Socialist Property Value Destroyer.”

The neighbor decided to double down on this “junkyard look” by adding signs typically seen in public or industrial buildings (No Idling, Caution, No Mechanic Work etc). Stuff obviously in retaliation to us calling the police…

I feel like we are being bullied passive-aggressively at this point and have no recourse. The police won’t do anything about it and our neighbors are friendly with the guy.

It’s one thing when people are trash and breaking laws/social norms out of ignorance, but this guy is a stereotypical liberal brainwashed millennial going out of his way to lower his property value, just to spite us and anyone that doesn’t agree with his beliefs.

Here is to hoping that he isn’t a bigger problem when it comes times to selling our house. Who wants to live next to a residential junkyard owned by a pot smoking degenerate?

Rant over !!!

*edit* lol I’m actually the neighbor with mechanical trash but I’m glad the comment section went the way it did

WWYD? Vent/Rant I didn't think much of it, but my wife is not happy, and I am starting to think that way too. What do you all think?

Did my neighbors do anything bad? no. Are they cool? Sure.

It's 2 retirees that live there with their son and daughter still at the house. They have 6-7 cars parked in their driveway and 4 of those cars have broken windows or flat tires. Sometimes they park a car in front of our house on the street.

For months I did not really care. There were no cars on our drive way and they are not taking up all the street parking. Their driveway is long and can fit up to 8 cars.

What upset my wife is that the cars make the house look messy and makes ours look messy too..(we share the drive way with no dividers) She especially does not like that 4 of the cars are run down and not fixed.

Should I start caring about this? I didn't think much of it but after wife brought it up I started to think about it.

Apartment NFH Neighbors floor fan vibrates and can’t sleep

I have more of a question I spoke with her finally after not being able to sleep and getting massive anxiety from the vibrating and humming noise. And she agreed to keep it off at night. Since she was so lovely I’m considering buying her a standing fan since hers sits on the floor but are standing fans any better when it comes to the vibration/ humming noise I don’t wanna buy her a standing fan just for it to cause the issue all over again

UPDATE: they turned it back on just moved locations. I don’t know if they thought I wasn’t gonna notice. At this point, how do I approach me trying to buy them a new fan because the one they have is driving me crazy or a silencing mat at this point I’ve looked into a quiet fan and I’m OK with buying them both. it’s 80 bucks 100% worth my sanity. And SLEEP

WWYD? Vent/Rant How do you peacefully coexist with a neighbor who seems to thrive on conflict?

Hey everyone, not really looking for legal advice, just need to vent and get some input.

My wife and I bought our house about a year ago, and we've tried to be good, quiet neighbors, but we've run into a problem with one neighbor, and I'm trying to figure out how to deal with her long term. About a month ago I hired a licensed and insured contractor to do some forestry mulching in our wooded backyard. Before he started, I walked the property line with him myself and showed him the survey markers in each corner that he needed to see.

While he was working, our neighbor came out yelling that he was on her property. She yelled at him over and over again while he tried to tell her he was not on her property. I then went down to make sure everything was okay and she she proceeded to do the same to me until she finally went back inside because the noise was to loud to hear each other. I did have the contractor send me a factual chain of events email last week.

It's been quiet for the past 3 weeks, but out of nowhere, she started back up again. She tried telling my wife while she was out walking the dog that we still needed to sit down and talk about "the damages". Later that same day she showed up at our front door demanding my homeowner's insurance info and my contractor's name and address. She's claiming there's a "path" to our backyard from her woods now and that debris is going to wash into her yard. Nothing was hit on her property and at the very worst, the contractor got about 2 feet of some mulch on some dirt on her side in the woods. She capped it off by saying if we plan on doing nothing, she'd take legal action.

I've documented everything and actually talked to an attorney. The attorney told me to not engage with her and if she approaches us again, I just give her the name and number of the attorney since she threatened legal action. After speaking with a few of our other neighbors, they've told us that they've had their own run-ins with this couple over the years. Disputes, threats, neighborhood drama, and my main neighbor had to file a no contact order years ago. Just makes the whole thing seems like it was a matter of when not if.

The whole thing has been super anxiety inducing. It makes me feel like i DID do something wrong when we haven't. I am going to just have to follow the advice of the attorney, but how do you all learn to deal with people like this? I do not want to let this neighbor take up so much space in my head, it is very frustrating, especially as young first time homeowners that have tried to be good neighbors. So for those of you who've lived next to somebody like this, how do you handle it long term? Is there anything else you would do if you were me? I really just needed to get a sanity check here.

EDIT: Thanks for all the comments everyone. I appreciate the kind words and advice.

EDIT 2: Also for the laugh factor, she has done the same thing to the other neighbor when the neighbor was repairing their well. She said the well was causing water to pool in her yard so she told her she needed their insurance. Crazy!

WWYD? Vent/Rant Neighbors are refusing to clean up their property. What would you do?

I could really use some outside opinions.
I own my home, and I share a driveway with my next-door neighbor. For years, their property has been neglected, and it has only gotten worse. As you can see in the photos, the backyard is overgrown with weeds, vines, and brush, and there are structures that appear to be falling into disrepair. It’s become an eyesore that I have to look at every single day.
I’ve spoken with the city multiple times and have filed complaints, but the situation either doesn’t improve or only gets temporary attention before it goes right back to the way it was. I’ve even been told by one official that I should help my neighbor clean up their property, but I work full-time and go to school. I barely have enough time to maintain my own home, let alone someone else’s.
My biggest concerns are:
The overgrown vegetation attracting rodents and other pests.
Potential fire hazards from the neglected yard.
The effect this has on nearby property values.
Having to live next to what feels like an abandoned property.
At this point, I’m frustrated and don’t know what else to do. Has anyone dealt with a situation like this? Were you able to get your town or city to take action? If so, what worked?
I’d appreciate any advice or suggestions. Thanks in advance.

WWYD? Vent/Rant Noise and Disorderly Conduct

I live in New Jersey in an townhouse. I own my side, and the neighbors next door rent. For the past few years, there has been ongoing loud and disruptive conduct from their side, including frequent yelling, screaming, fighting, loud profanity, and other noise that can clearly be heard inside my home. It has affected my sleep, ability to work from home, and general ability to feel safe and comfortable in my own house.

Recently, the situation has escalated. They saw me recording the noise inside my house and started yelling about me and filming me. When I leave or enter my home, some of them will jump up and record me with their phones. This is not just a fixed camera or incidental recording. They track me as I walk to or from my home, sometimes narrate what I am doing, and have made comments like I “need to move.” They also frequently refer to the fact that I live alone. I do not speak to them or confront them.

There have also been recordings where they yell insults such as “bitch” and “white bitch,” discuss going “tit for tat,” and talk about retaliation. I also have a recording where gun violence/retaliation is discussed. One person said he was willing to go back to jail for assault, but I was not able to capture that specific statement on my Ring camera. Since they are not yelling it at me directly, the police say they cannot do anything.

I have made police reports and contacted municipal officials/code enforcement. The police have said they can only talk to them. They said that they have to see something happen, and that everything they are doing is legal. Code enforcement said they would contact the landlord, but I have not heard anything back. I am also trying to identify the correct landlord/LLC contact information because the deed lists an LLC, but the mailing address appears to be the rental property itself. While a lot of this falls under disorderly conduct, I do not have the names of everyone who lives there, just the woman who rents, and I would need that to press charges. The police have said they cannot cite them unless they see it and the neighbors simply stop when the police come and deny it.

I do have evidence, including Ring videos, indoor recordings showing how loud the noise is inside my home, police emails, incident reports, and a spreadsheet tracking incidents. I am also working on organizing the strongest clips. My mother has heard the noise over the phone while I was inside my home, so she can also provide a witness statement. I can also get a therapist letter about how this has affected my stress and functioning.

I am wondering if anyone else has any idea how to proceed or has gone through something similar. I live in NJ.

I am not trying to escalate the situation or confront them. I just want to be able to live in my home without constant yelling, intimidation, and being recorded doing nothing.

Vent/Rant Advice please

Has anyone else dealt with a neighbour who seems overly interested in your personal life? I’m 20 years old and I’m looking for some outside perspectives because this situation has been bothering me for a while.

I live at home with my family and over the past couple of years I’ve become increasingly concerned about a neighbour on my block who appears to pay close attention to my movements especially who comes to and from my home. This neighbour is close friends with my eldest sister (33). My two older sisters (28 and 33) do not get along at all. On several occasions it has seemed that whenever I’ve been seen with my 28 year old sister my eldest sister somehow finds out shortly afterwards. From what I’ve observed this information appears to come from our neighbour who is either always out and about or in her front garden watching the neighbourhood. The situation escalated last year another piece of evidence I kept was I was accused of being seen getting out of my (28) sisters “new” car when that was not the case that day I had been out with a friend from school and her partner came to collect us and dropped me home. Once again I was being watched and had false accusations made against my whereabouts which caused more drama and more conflict.

On another occasion, I returned from a trip away with my 28 year old sister. My sister (33) knew where I was going what I was doing and that I’ll come see her once I’m home it was a 24hr trip across the waters on a plane like really not that far. She has no problem with me being out with sister (28) she knows I’m closer to sister (28) besides the point, a few days later my eldest sister confronted me about things on my social media. she has had me blocked on every platform for years and we only communicate by text on WhatsApp (she is currently blocked completely on my end in the recent weeks). I later learned that this neighbour had shown my social media profile to my eldest sister not just the post from my trip away it was literally my entire page as well as my dad’s profile. That crossed a line for me because I don’t think it’s appropriate for someone else to monitor my social media and share it with family members. It’s her fault she can’t see what I have posted because she’s got me blocked since the very beginning. I have raised my concerns with my parents. Their view is that they don’t want to create conflict because my dad works with the neighbour’s mother. While I understand that, I also feel my privacy should matter. I don’t think it’s acceptable if someone is regularly be watching when I leave home, who I’m with or who visits my house and then passing that information on to someone else who doesn’t live in my home anymore? I’m not frightened, but I am much more cautious now whenever I leave my home because I find myself wondering whether I’m being watched again.

On another occasion it was my mums birthday 2024 I was dressed up for the occasion but I was going no where and there was no plans made. My sister 33 came to visit saw me dressed up ( jeans and a blouse may I add with some makeup. Arrived and asked me where I was going as I mentioned there was no plans it was just a day of rest and having a quiet family birthday at home. My sister (28) came to visit for my mums birthday and spontaneously asked if I would like to come to a local supermarket. Of course I said yes. But once again I was being watched by the neighbour who had seen me with sister (28) I then got messages saying I was a liar and that I did have plans to go out and that I should’ve just told (33) where I was going. Why should I have to explain myself? I did not know I was going to be asked to go to a local supermarket? Had I of known I was going to be asked to go out to a local supermarket would I have still told sister (33) absolutely not it’s irrelevant. I don’t need anyone to know where I’m going who I’m with. I’m 20 years old I can do what I want go where I want and be with who I want it’s my own life and choice.

More recently, the situation has started creating tension for my entire family. This neighbour has now been involved in another issue where she accused my dad of talking about her mother, who he works with. Apparently, someone contacted this neighbour and told her that a man and a woman were discussing her mother in public. Without knowing the full details or who was actually involved, she immediately assumed it was my dad and another neighbour who also is a work colleague and lives on my block next door to the one who has been watching my whereabouts and confronted the situation based on that assumption. My dad has no idea what was supposedly said because he wasn’t the person involved, and he has no reason to speak negatively about her mother. It feels like conclusions are being made without any evidence, and it has caused unnecessary drama between families who have to interact because of work connections. At this point, it just feels like one piece of drama after another. Every time I think things have settled down, something else seems to happen. I don’t want conflict with anyone, but I also don’t think it’s healthy to constantly feel like my personal life is being discussed or watched.

Has anyone experienced something similar? How did you deal with it? At what point would you consider this to be an invasion of privacy or harassment? I’m interested in hearing respectful advice and other people’s experiences? Should I go public and make a video about it? Or just even a post? I want her belittled for what she done what she caused what trauma she has created and caused.

Thank you!
