Working on DAWG - Digital Audio Workstation Game for 9 months and wanted to share the progress

Hey everyone!

I have been working on my DAWG - Digital Audio Workstation Game for 9 months and wanted to share the progress I made.

DAWG - Digital Audio Workstation Game - Multiplayer reveal

After the latest addition of shaders and DSP visuals, I noticed decreased performance on mobile devices, so the first goal was to restore the performance and improve it even further.

The main part of this improvement involved continuing to removal of the managed DSP code that existed before I implemented Unity Burst. Since the whole engine was essentially rewritten for Burst, there were still many parity calculations, duplicated processes, and basic inefficiencies that affected performance and caused overheating on mobile devices.

I am happy to say that the optimisation worked. The oldest targeted device, a Samsung S8 from 2017 is now running very smoothly. For more modern devices, this still means less heat build-up over time and better battery life, so I think the work was worthwhile.

There is still some managed DSP code left, so the task is not complete. However, with the issues pinpointed, it should not take too much time to remove it completely.

The second task was general multiplayer hardening, aligning it with Steam standards, and testing it on actual devices.

Multiplayer is intended as a mode where players can connect to the same session. One player can control the drums, another can play an instrument, another can manage the FX, and another can mix the jam together. This could be a couch session or something outdoors in a park or at the beach.

The main result I wanted was reliable clock sync, either locally over Wi-Fi or through Steam services. MIDI clock synchronization should be automatic, invisible to the user, and simply work, with self-healing over time. Patterns, notes, instruments, and master-panel settings should also synchronize in real time without introducing any additional latency.

After spending time ironing out the bugs and conducting extensive testing, I managed to record a short three-way session so you can see how multiplayer responds in real time. I only have two arms, so the performance is as bad as expected :D

DAWG is a Unity game with real DAW foundation.

Feel free to check more tracks on Youtube or ask any question!

Update on my FREE plugin COGG: I added cool new presets in v1.1!

I'm a high school student who is developing a free plugin!

A few weeks ago you probably saw that I posted about COGG, a free plugin I built that metallizes and industrializes any sound. Specifically, harmonic distortion, metal plate convolution reverb, and pitch layering are there all in one chain.

I just shipped v1.1 with 8 factory presets so you can dial in different metallic textures instantly instead of tweaking all the knobs from scratch. Everything is there, from subtle texture (like the preset RUST), to full chaos (like presets SHRAPNEL and MELTDOWN).

Still free, no account needed, VST3 + AU for Mac, VST3 for Windows.

Download now for free: https://plasma-hype.itch.io/cogg

Trailer/demo of the update: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HfD2drnrMjQ

Thanks to everyone who tried v1.0 and gave feedback, this update came directly from figuring out what people actually wanted to do with it. I personally have used COGG in almost all of my FL projects ever since I released it. Please give it a shot and let me know what you think of the presets and plugin as a whole for a v1.2!

Software that can raise pitch by a large amount without distortion?

I'm sonifying seismic data from earthquakes. The frequencies of seismic waves are typically in the range of 0.1 to 1 hz, much too low to be heard by human ears. I need to multiply the frequencies by hundreds times to make them audible. I've experimented with several ways of doing this using Pure Data. Those ways work okay when raising the frequency by an octave or so, but distort the sound badly when you raise the frequencies by the hundreds of times that is necessary to hear seismic waves. Can anyone recommend software that can raise the pitch by hundreds of times with minimal distortion? Ideally using Pure Data or some other free software.

Did I make the world's first physics based DAW?

I've been working on this project for about 9 months now. It started very simple, just bouncing droplets and generative music, but it quickly turned into some sort of physics based DAW that I don't think has ever been done before.

This is a demonstration of the sandbox mode, where you can create music freely using a plethora of tools and sounds. You can add a total of 12 instruments, each with 4 different effects (reverb, delay, chorus, phaser) that you can dial in to your liking for each one.

No music theory is required to play, just bounce and experiment. There are some deeper tools if you want to get more complex though. Such as changing the key, BPM, scale, pattern, as well as the notes of individual vines to get the exact melody or rhythm you want. You can upload your own samples to create custom vines and also download the track you created.

I'm releasing it on Steam next month:

https://store.steampowered.com/app/4163480/Dewdrop/

Would love to hear what you think of the game and any features you think would be cool to include!

Given aĺl the other tools released almost daily i wonder if this is really worth the cost of license renewal on a non ai interface. But since it's packed with tools and was fun to make this video it might generate some interest.

Earliest music programming: Harmony on the PDP-1 (1962)

The audio quality might not be great, but this was the granddaddy of any DAW. It did not just play notes, it allowed very precise scoring of classical music. For details, see the end of this page with more information on its programming:

https://obsolescence.dev/pdp1-music.html

We reconstructed the code over the last 1.5 years to run on a replica of the real PDP-1 computer.

Song Key Finder app for DJs and other musicians (Camelot + Music Theory modes)

Hi. I wrote such a good post for this sub yesterday. On my phone. And found out there’s no such thing as a draft auto save on Reddit. Surprise surprise.

And it’s funny cuz I really can’t remember how I went about it. But it was something along the lines of…

You guys are pretty awesome. Ever since I joined the sub I keep seeing awesome things you create and even with all the vibe coding apocalypse we got on our hands it’s all still pretty impressive.

And that’s where I wanted to share my little product that seems so simple (one of the main reasons I even made it). It’s a Song Key Finder app that consists of two main components:

Both of them have two modes to show results: Camelot system for DJs and Music theory mode for everyone else :) I knew this tool would most likely be more popular among the DJs that like creating playlists with their browser, using multiple sources. But as a musician I couldn’t not include the music theory in this. So I added a notation view of the key signature and added a playable piano with highlighted keys for each key. Almost forgot the BPM finder… It’s there. And you can preview the tempo too.

That’s not even all! I knew no analysis is foolproof. And also modulation, duh. So I added a tone button so that anyone can check results :)

I’m probably forgetting something. Like optional login possibility to share your results across devices. But that’s the gist of it.

And I’ve been asked many times ‘why are you making it? I can tell you the key if you just give me an instrument’. And the answer is ‘people were googling it so I googled it and found out there’s Mixed in Key that sells a similar thing for too much money. I also need it as a singer planning setlists. I also only have relative pitch and it’s quite useful when I don’t have an instrument but need to know the key.’

That’s probably not all the reasons. But first ones that come to mind.

P.S.: I am a UI/UX/Graphic designer and I really like how my Chrome Web Store posters turned out. What do you think? And thank you for your time.

PSPS: I do use AI in coding. But I’m not very satisfied with whatever it does to interfaces yet. At least for my projects. And graphic design… Nope, I like this stuff too much to outsource it. And writing posts on Reddit? Hell no. I hate even trying to read AI posts. They are so so dead. So sorry for any mistakes in this text.

Software for Auto song recognition to display Live Lyrics

Hi!

I'm looking for a software that discovers the playing song from an audio source, then searches for it's lyrics, and displays it synced with the music. Running on Windows 11.

I have a software called Lyricify, but it only works from spotify.

Also, Musixmatch would be good, but they discontinued the desktop app.

I appreciate every answer, idea, or solution.

I built a free, open-source arranger keyboard for PC — it turns any MIDI file into a playable, chord-following style

Hey all — I've been building Cadenza, a free and open-source software "arranger keyboard" for Windows, and just put it on GitHub.

You play chords with your left hand and it plays a full backing band (drums, bass, chords) in real time that follows your chords — like a Yamaha/Giglad arranger, but free and open.

The feature I'm most excited about: import any General-MIDI file and it auto-converts it into a playable, chord-transposable style. It auto-splits the song into sections, detects the key, normalizes it so you can play on easy white keys (and transpose to the real key), and can even generate drum fills with AI.

It's C++ / JUCE, GPLv3. I'd genuinely love contributors — especially musicians who understand theory, since the voicing/voice-leading is where it could improve most.

GitHub: https://github.com/Piskocis/Cadenza

Happy to answer anything!
