I don't think the issue was CGI vs practical effects/actual location filming. The Odyssey, Project Hail Mary and Obsession are are great movies. Supergirl, Moana, and Mando all had various issues that hurt the quality of the movie. Mando for instance felt like an expanded episode of the show, rather than something that had to be on the big screen, and it suffered from a portion of the fanbase boycotting it because its Disney. Its CGI was actually very well-done.

I didn't watch the mando movie but I did watch the show. In season 1 there were a few scenes that I thought looked like he was just standing in front of a screen. There was a weird lack of depth to the background sometimes.

Yeah, that can be an issue with the "sphere" tech shows are using to either get out of location filming or go with CGI heavy backgrounds. To my admittedly non-expert eye, shots that don't have a lot of practical set decoration to help establish perspective and spatial relationships tend to suffer more from that.

Good take on Mando. The pacing especially. Also the score composition was very tv show like. Some of the most generic music (mando) throughout the movie.
