The Odyssey was way overhyped

I'd give it 6.5/10, maybe 7 if I'm generous. I enjoyed both Troy and Clash of the Titans more.

The good:

-The Agamemnon scenes were cool, very Darth Vader-esque

-some good dramatic build up and tense moments

-some good ocean/storm scenes that feel quite immersive

The bad:

-The "non-linear" story telling was weird

-many scenes were too dimly lit and very plain

-costumes, sets, casting, dialog, and acting didn't really evoke a particular historical period or culture or a people... it felt like a bunch of modern people just dressed up in generic ancient looking stuff for a Halloween party or something. Seemed more like a play than a movie at times. Did not transport me to deep antiquity.

-monsters weren't that well done

-some of the action went on too long, could have been edited down a lot

-Greek gods poorly done

-contrary to what others say, the music wasn't even that good as a whole. Lots of cheap cliche intensity build up noise.

-repetitive

-Troy seemed kind of small

To be fair the movie got better towards the end so I didn't get bored or want to leave the theater. I suppose it would be worth it for some entertainment but it doesn't deserve so much praise. It felt more like a TV series quality type of thing. Would definitely not watch a second time.

Don't expect some masterpiece like Lord of the Rings or something, just average entertainment.

I agree that The Odyssey is overhyped. But in no way, shape, or form is Troy or Clash of the Titans better. Brad Pitt didnt even want to be in Troy, and it shows.

u/dj4y_94 SIMKL.com vs Letterboxd 11h ago

I say this as someone who loves Troy for what it is, but it's quite funny seeing people criticise the Odyssey for certain things and then say Troy is better, when those same criticisms apply to Troy.

The armour in Troy isn't historically accurate either, the story isn't accurate outside of the main beats, the Gods aren't shown or felt in any capacity and so on.

Achilles didn't want to be in Troy.

It's method acting.

I like Troy significantly better. Better battle scenes, acting, and intensity.

1

u/nailinpalin69 SIMKL.com vs Letterboxd 2h ago

Yea those Orlando Bloom Diane Kruger scenes will be shown to film students for generations.../s. Of course Troy had better battle scenes, they were seizing Troy for 2 hours. Hard to have grand battle scenes when you're on a boat. As for the intensity, idk what to tell you....nothing in Troy touches the Cyclops or Siren scenes.

Not to mention CGI not being used for the monsters (so ive heard at least)

The original Clash of The Titans from the 80s was better, but not the remake

I wouldnt say that Troy is better, but I dont think they are that far off, like Troy for me is a 6/10, Odyssey is 6.5/7 out of 10

But Clash of the Titans is way worse without a doubt

u/Rivendel93 SIMKL.com vs Letterboxd 11h ago

I agree, Troy felt more epic to me, like the world felt bigger than in The Odyssey, which I did not expect as a massive Nolan fan.

I've been wondering why the Agamemnon scenes worked so well. He was very Darth Vader-esque. You hit the nail on the head.

3

u/Ambitious_Misfit Films Watchlist on SIMKL.com 12h ago

It’s very plausible he took inspiration from the iconography of a Darth Vader (or a Batman perhaps?), but as it applies to the deeper storytelling, I interpreted Agamemnon as tangentially representative of what is explored with Circe and Odysseus’ men…. That in this telling, all these warriors, kings, heroes are hiding their true nature, shrouded under all this armor and weaponry.

We never see Agamemnon’s face, in battle he is merely a presence in his grand armor, and the only time we see him without his amplifiers (his return home) is a story of arrogance, naivety, and frailty. Just like Odysseus’ men reduced to pigs without their armored shrouds, Agamemnon the figure inspired soldiers and bastioned fear in enemies, but the man was shown to be far less.

The Hades scene really cemented it for me, where he once again appears in his grand armor and yet when we finally hear him talk, it is this incredibly unimpressive voice. Once again, Agamemnon the figure serves as a great lesson/warning to Odysseus, but the only aspects of the man himself Nolan gives us are mundane and unimpressive.

I’d give it a solid 8/10. The fantasy elements are a bit weak and what keeps it from being higher in my opinion. While it’s a better film than either Clash of the Titans or the remake I gladly rewatch them and may not revisit this film as often. Nolan has an interesting take on the Greek gods. They are almost myth in universe. Even Athena could be a figment of Ulysses imagination. Then we have the supernatural elements which are treated as real. I’m sure it has to do with their power and time waning.

3

u/Specialist-Ring-3974 Films Watchlist on SIMKL.com 13h ago

Yep. Maybe a strong 7/10 or a lower 8/10 for me. I was immersed the entire time, the journey had a lot of tense moments, characters were well acted, the cinematography and score were well done, and the story was handled very well -- it hit all the same notes as the poem, and expanded on them.

Yea… fun summer movie. But all in all, it left me feeling unfulfilled. I did not have very high expectations either. Just too many things I did not enjoy I guess.

I am eager for the dust to settle so we can have some proper discussions about the film and its merits. Right now it’s just a mud slinging contest.

13

u/kvikklunsjrevolver SIMKL.com vs Letterboxd 20h ago

I went in pretty neutral.
To me it felt a bit like a slideshow, for lack of better words.

Like I don’t hate it, and it does have some very beautiful and interesting visuals, but it didn’t really feel authentic at all to me.
I guess it lacked heart, and I didn’t feel like the essence and meaning of the epic was really translated into this movie.

If I had to rate it, it would be a 6/10.

5

u/Scary_Vanilla2932 Films Watchlist on SIMKL.com 19h ago

I think it didn't have the weight of the themes he was trying to project. The ambiance hit hard and the script and writing let us down. It was beautiful and yet most scenes were to dark, or to close or not expansive enough. Most modern movies lack clever dialogue and this one was no different. Just because Nolan decided he wanted a simple modern English script doesn't mean it couldnt be more clever or nuanced.

2

u/Rivendel93 SIMKL.com vs Letterboxd 11h ago

It felt like a slide show, no heart, emotionless.

Calypso island prod design/costumes looked like a straight up fragrance commercial. Can people like the movie without loving it? Can people dislike the movie without being a hater? I think we can all see through the irrelevant criticisms thrown at the film before its release but as with all films adapted from popular IP, do people think no one would have any opinions?

2

-The book is told non linearly. Perfect for Nolan’s motif. If you’re complaining about non linear story telling in a Nolan movie. That’s actually hilarious to me.

-there were no lights switches back in the day bro. Shit was going to be dimly lit. Ocean is going to be dark at night.

-monsters weren’t that well done? Okay. Clash of titans CGI overuse is definitely for you then. For people tired of that shit. We loved the practical effects. Seeing the soldiers get turned to pigs without CGI was a marvel.

-Greek gods aren’t fucking real bro. Movie starts off by saying in a time of “apparent” magic. A lot of these sequences in the movie aren’t literal.

-as far as music The bass was definitely a lot but it worked for the movie. The theme of Odysseus was top tier including his bow pluck to be used for part of the theme. Hearing some of the ancient instruments they used for the score. It was good.

-Troy may have seemed small but they built every single bit of that set.

I say all this probably knowing you won’t change your mind all that much. If you were underwhelmed you were underwhelmed. This movie will stand the test of time for sure. A lot of people hated interstellar when it first came out and now people love it way more than they did when they first saw it. Maybe after rewatches you’ll appreciate some of the things you didn’t like initially.

Good criticism elaborates about what is "done poorly" or "not done well," it doesn't just say so matter-of-factly.

And from another comment: "fun summer film?" I loved it but would hardly call it fun.

I barely noticed the Agamemnon scenes compared to other moments. "Ooh, looks cool I like that costume he's so big!"

Hype is bought media. Hype is not at all representative of actual public opinion of a movie. How in 2026 do people still fall for this?

From early Rotten Tomato reviews, to literally straight up ads just telling you its the "movie of the summer" people think holy cow that must mean its good????

The movie is big, it's epic (in scheme and scope) it's made for the big screen. It's.... fine? It'll be forgettable. It won't be watched at home 10 years from now. But I also enjoyed my time sitting in the theater watching it.

2

u/Chole_Wunt SIMKL.com vs Letterboxd 14h ago

Thought it was honestly terrible. I was wondering how they were going to adapt that story to a movie format, and they didnt do a good job.

The journey was just a series of boxes being checked. Cyclops -check. Circe - check. Sirens - check. String bow - Check. Hades - check. Literally no effort to convey what was being conveyed in the original. Like the morality and ethics and stuff. No mention of hubris anywhere. Same with Calypso honestly.

Characters were poorly developed. Just a consequence of skipping over everything to fit it all in.

More like a movie based on the cliff notes of the Odessy than anything worthwhile.

But thats what Ive come to expect from modern movies. Special effects and no substance.

You had grifters on the right saying it's the worst thing ever, but conversely you also had grifters on the left saying it's the best thing ever. This leads to a spiral where the movie is both critically panned and critically acclaimed, then when completely normal people go to watch it, it meets none of the expectations you had going in and is the most mediocre movie you've ever seen.

I’ve seen only hate campaigns online for months about this movie.

It’s a Nolan film, critics are going to like his movies regardless because they generally are good across a variety of metrics that critics would be measuring from.

In today’s time audience reactions online tend to be overly supportive or overly hateful depending on whatever agenda they subscribe to.

Haven’t seen it yet, looking forward to seeing it, not expecting it to be a top movie for me but I’m sure it’ll be perfectly fine. Nothing will be worse than the dread of knowing that I’m not even halfway through antman quantimania and that I’d have to endure more of that garbage. I doubt even the worst of Nolan’s films is more digestible than that

Gotta give credit where credit is due Bud.

This was the first ever movie filmed entirely on 70 MM film. Literally 11 miles of reel. Get 3 minutes to shoot and barely any CGI was used. That takes mastery and skill from a director. Christopher Nolan hand picked every location, they were on set in the seas for months on end. Unless you have a Real IMAX near you to project how the film was really supposed to be seen, I’d encourage anyone to get tickets when they free up. It’s literally a masterpiece and a shock we even got this kind of movie.
There are only 25 theaters in America that can project this movie. Think about that. This is a projectionist dream come true.

I was engaged the entire movie. Hands down 1 of the best movies I’ve seen on the big screen

How is it a masterpiece if you can only watch it in IMAX? 90% of people will never see it in IMAX. If it can not translate to watching it on a regular screen then it really is not that great of a film.

1

u/YallSoftAsButter Films Watchlist on SIMKL.com 2h ago

It’s the first ever movie filmed entirely on 70 MM. You do understand how remarkable that is. Before the camera even roles for every battle scene they must be precise and ready. Only get 3 minute takes.

Movie goers are literally driving from different states to see this in 70 MM. That’s how unique it is.
I have a theater close by that runs it all day everyday for the next 3 weeks. You can’t even get seats right now. Theaters are sold out in every showing.
It’s 500 pounds of reel and 11 miles long.

90% of of people probably don’t even care and will watch it standard or in Liemax. I watched it in GPX theater, still is an awesome quality film. I’ll be getting tickets for IMAX next week when they have openings. It’ll be awesome to watch how the movie was intended to be seen.

1

u/Mundane_Bell_1894 SIMKL.com vs Letterboxd 2h ago

I don’t know why these subs all the sudden keep showing up on my feed. But I personally don’t care about reviews or critics or whatever. If there’s a movie I am interested in I go see it, and if I like it I like it, if I don’t I don’t. There’s plenty of movies that have bad reviews I enjoy and ones with good ones I don’t. Some people loved this movie, some people hated it. Some people are in between. Everyone’s different

You should have stopped immediately when you said you looked Troy better. Troy is just objectively a bad movie. It has fun scenes. But it's a bad movie.

Apparently Troy was actually quite a small city (by modern standards.) Like ~200 meters wide. More of a fortress on a hill than a full blown walled city.

"doesnt deserve so much praise" - why arent people allowed to have a different opinion?

1

u/DaHarbinger2000 Films Watchlist on SIMKL.com 18h ago

It was fantastic, no real complaints. Other than normal Nolan having clunky execution in some action scenes. It’s always been one of his major issues. But in terms of themes, naturalistic & brutalist imagery, storytelling, it was second to none. The climax was unbelievably well earned. And there’s a lot of small little call backs to earlier in the film that I found very clever.

The non linear cuts actually made a lot of sense for this type of tale for me. It’s definitely not over hyped. It’s an experience I would recommend to anyone. Not everyone can be pleased however.

Well, at least you didn't talk about the casting, I guess.

1

u/Special_Trifle_8033 SIMKL.com vs Letterboxd 5h ago

Matt Damon wasn't the best choice for Odysseus. Made it feel like the Bourne Identity with his spaced out amnesia scenes. Anne Hathaway was not bad as the Queen. The "diversity" of the rest of the cast could have worked ok but it wasn't done well. The controversial black Helen of Troy could have worked if they got the right actress. Could have been as good as Morgan Freeman playing God in Bruce Almighty.

1

u/Glass_Cheetah SIMKL.com vs Letterboxd 16h ago

Just like art, it’s all subjective…some people like some people don’t. A friend already saw this film 3 times, that’s how much he loved it…while I will most likely never watch this film again for the rest of my life. Definitely didn’t hate it, just wasn’t enthralled or moved enough to add it as a top fav.

Eh. I like it. My only complaint was Charybdis and Scylla. The Cyclops was freaky as fuck and so was Cerce. But Charybdis didn't look intimidating at all, and the Scylla scene was too quick for the emotional pay-off of the sacrifice. I wish there was more mythical stuff like the bag, but oh well.

Overhyped/overrated are perhaps the most misused words in our modern vocabulary. I’m just tired of people deciding that if you like something more or less than others than it’s everyone else who is wrong. Bro, you like it less. It’s a totally fair opinion. But overhyped means everyone else somehow lied or wasn’t right. Come on now

1

u/Forsaken-Device-6093 SIMKL.com vs Letterboxd 12h ago

I completely accept other people enjoy different things, and at the end of the day it’s all media, it really doesn’t matter and people can enjoy what they like.

That being said, what the fuck are you smoking that you preferred clash of the titans? That is one of the worst films I have ever seen, I’d almost say it’s not even subjective, it is objectively terrible!

1

u/ihaveviolethair SIMKL.com vs Letterboxd 12h ago

I actually liked that the fantasy elements were muted. It was very much like “being a hero isn’t all that great” - because Odysseus was ashamed of what he had to do (break zeus’ law) to become legendary.

I think i appreciated the realism, that oral tellings can get overyhyped, but the reality is grim, horrific, unsettling or downright terrible. It kinda highlights that people just hype what they did/saw in their travels to elevate themselves.

Even how Athena was done- you were wondering if she was real or odysseus was hallucinating her. They properly skirted the line between greek gods being real and people WANTING to believe they were real.

Clash of the titans (and later, wrath) was borderline comical because they focused on the CGI fantasy elements to it.

I guess thats the trouble with retelling an old story, people come to it with expectations and you cant please everyone

1

u/CoffeeNBiskits SIMKL.com vs Letterboxd 11h ago

… I’m a bit exasperated tbh with respect. Regarding the time jumps and non linear argument, that’s the odyssey… the story is literally a complex narrative that’s non linear and the number of people that use that as a negative… also every Nolan film is like this. He plays with non linear storytelling. It’s not new with him. So objectively it’s not weird.

1

u/tayz0314 Films Watchlist on SIMKL.com 11h ago

In short, it means it simply repeats the same flaws found in Nolan's films. His movies are almost always non-linear—yet incredibly tedious—and feature dark visuals and cramped framing.

u/r-guthmensch SIMKL.com vs Letterboxd 7h ago

Ifind funny, that you put these to together:
"-costumes, sets, casting, dialog, and acting didn't really evoke a particular historical period or culture or a people"
"-Troy seemed kind of small"
because they are contradict each other. i recomme you to take a look at big cities and forts around the time period the troyan war is predicted. a good example would be the ancient greek city mycenae.

The picture a lot of you have in your had about troy seems quite wird and ahistorical and to much influenced by older holywood movies and there presentation of troy

I really enjoyed every minute of it. The dialogue was jarring at first but that passed quickly. The performances were all solid and the overall film was excellent.

I was exactly as hyped as I needed to be and I'm glad this movie exists. Solid 8.5/10.

The rose colored rememberence of Troy is funny to me. I saw it in theaters and while it was fun it was a hammy take with some extreme overacting. It's a solid 6.5/10

Open letter to the people that brought a baby to the movie and who clapped when Odysseus fought the suitors...y'all suck, all time champions of suck. Nothing more movie ruining than a baby talking and screaming the entire time.

People will pick this film apart to death, regardless of how good it is. Because honestly I think there’s always going to be people who want to go against the grain for the sake of it. I love film and watch a lot of great movies, I’d give it 9.5-10. You’re entitled to your opinion but I think it’s a bad one.

The costumes and armor were horrible - on par with quality from films and series’s such as: Netflix’s Troy: Fall of a City, Amazon’s Rings of Power, and The Rock’s 2014 Hercules film.

It had all the money, resources and people to craft quality costumes but they cheaped out on that front.

And nearly every character was miscast.

Clearly, the “98% on Rotten Tomatoes!!” , “Astounding!”, “Miraculous!” campaign was fabricated by Universal (owned by the same parent company as Rotten Tomatoes) and Hollywood to stick it to Trump and the Right for the complaints about the diverse casting. I mean, the hype came out of nowhere, and all the news agencies are even talking about it. They received the talking points and it’s clear it is a coordinated effort. I will be seeing it this weekend, and I hope it’s as good as the campaign says it is!
