Discussion Recording your modular rig with a cellphone mic

I've always wondered why so many modular musicians record with the mic on their cell when everyone knows it sounds horrible. Why do you think people would invest so much money and time then share terrible sound. Laziness?

Discussion Modular & Neurodiversity

Post image
121 Upvotes

As I disassemble and re-assemble my rack for the nth time (and reflect that my ratio of different module configurations to tracks completed is >>1), I have to ask: any other neurodiverse folks find themselves drawn by the tactility of modular? I sometimes think I enjoy this part of it as much as the actual music.

Drum sequencer variety

How do yall handle getting variety out of a sequencer without changing the sequencer? One trick I like is to run my sequences into something like a matrix mixer so I can run sequence 1 into bass drum, sequence 2 in to snare, then I’m able to switch those back and forth and still able to get back to where I started

Does CV delay exist?

Kinda random thought but is there a way to delay a gate or a pitch by a beat or two? Could be a very obvious way to do this that I haven’t thought about but maybe there’s even a module specifically for this??

Triangle wave from Pam’s sent through scale duet on ornament and crime, into plaits. Varying the level of the triangle wave with another channel on Pam’s. Bouncing ball mode on pip slope into the trigger input on Plaits.

Using the XAOC Zadar to shape multiple CV points. The 4 ramps are being sent to control FM index, wavefolder, pitch dive & amplitude mod of a VCA for that trem effect. One of the ramps is inverted and sending a Xfade signal to blend the two modules as well as shape a bandpass filter. VCA is being modulated with tiptop audio Z3000, Transient kick element is Basimilus Iteritas Alter, as one does.

The Anti-GAS thread: Modules that continue to stand the test of time for you?

I am deeply prone to GAS and have long-since accepted that my eurorack system is an evolving organism constantly subject to change and that that's just part of the fun of the hobby to me.

For for those similarly afflicted I was curious about your longest-running modules, the ones that never seem to be put upon the alter of B/S/T sacrifice.

Here are some of mine in what's now a reasonably robustly-sized system:

- Pam's New Workout: It's not so much that it's one of my favorite modules, but it's my core clocking module and it's useful and not one I ever think about selling.

- Mordax DATA: Acquired very early in the hobby, I just think of it as my CV monitor and never think about trading it.

- Make Noise Maths: A classic for a reason.

- Xaoc Moskwa II, Warna II, and Belgrad: Xaoc in general is an increasingly stable brand in my system, I love their stuff and suspect the Praga, Tallin, and their other filters are also unlikely to go anywhere, but the three I mention are the longest-standing. Warna II in particular are such a great utility, I have 3 and use them all.

- Noise Engineering Versio: I have 3 of these also and have for some time. So many great firmwares. I wouldn't sneeze at a 4th.

- Schlappi Three Body: For a time I was changing out complex oscillators regularly, until I landed on the Three Body. Three interrelated oscillators that can be audio voices or modulators or a combination of both, with 14 outputs and 32 patchpoints is tough to beat.

- Instruo Lubadh & Arbhar: I wouldn't say "never" on these, but they're now very long-standing and the core of so many noise/drone patches. They feel like family.

- Verbos Amp & Tone: This is the weird one. It has a noise floor and can pick up noise from surrounding modules depending where it's placed in the system. But I've had it so long and I just love the sound of it, it has such a gnarly howling resonance, and I actually kind of like its noise floor which reminds me of a gentle bed of cassette hiss. I can never quite bring myself to offer it away.

So what are some of yours?

How to test RackBrute power module?

I have two RackBrutes, the 6U and the 3U. Neither has been used for some months. This past weekend I started getting failures on both. Of course, I started by auditing my power consumption (well below 1A) and looking for a bad cable or module. Results were inconclusive.

The failure patterns

A. On power on, the rack immediately cycles off.

B. On power on, everything works for 10-30 minutes, then power cuts off or starts cycling on/off/on/off...

C. After carefully adding modules one at a time, I add one more module and the rack immediately starts cycling on/off/on/off. I remove the last module added and then encounter problem B.

All of these failure patterns have manifested as I tried modules one at a time, in combination, etc., looking for the "bad" module or ribbon.

I have trouble believing that both RackBrutes failed, yet all of the modules work fine in a different skiff. The two power bricks provide a steady 13V, the cases are clean with no bent pins. None of the ribbon cables show wear or damage.

I purchased the RackBrutes used about 2 years ago and have used them quite a bit before putting them away about 6 months ago while I worked on a different system.

Is there a way to test the Power modules?

Discussion Flurry is so good!!

A couple weeks ago, I recorded a bunch of drum samples from my modular and am now going through the recordings. Omg, Flurry is seriously such a gem for weird snares. Nearly forgot how much I squeezed out of it with a little VCA and envelope.

If anyone is looking for a fun noise generator module, I'd highly recommend checking out Flurry.

Very curious to hear any else's experience with this one or other noise generator modules for making interesting perc sounds.
