Please limit all vaccine discussions to this post! Got a question? We wont stop you from posing repeat questions here but try taking a quick moment to search through some keywords. Health A reminder about our rules on asking for medical advice

Hello fellow moderately granola moms,

In light of some recent posts that had to be removed, this is a reminder about our sub rule banning asking for and giving medical advice. We have no way of verifying anyone’s credentials and particularly because many of the questions involve the health of children, we kindly ask that all medical questions are directed to qualified medical personnel and not this sub.

Examples of what is not allowed: 1. Asking whether or not your child (or you) should take or complete a course of prescribed antibiotics 2. Posting pictures of your child’s rash asking what it is 3. Asking whether prescription medications are safe to take during pregnancy (example: “I just found out I’m pregnant and I take Lyrica for nerve pain, can I keep taking it?”) 4. Posting lab results and asking for assistance in interpreting them 5. Saying that you took your child to a doctor and the doctor told you to do “XYZ” and asking if you should do it

Examples of what is allowed: 1. If your child has a diagnosed medical condition (e.g. eczema), asking what other parents have done in that situation 2. Sharing your experiences with healthcare and asking for advice about navigating the system 3. Asking for tips on managing general health that wouldn’t typically be classified as a medical condition (e.g. dry skin) or doesn’t require intervention from a medical provider under normal circumstances (e.g. the common cold)

The above examples of what is and isn’t allowed are just examples and not an exhaustive list. When in doubt, you are welcome to message the mods to ask whether something you’d like to post would violate the sub rules.

Thank you for your help.

Health Allergies

Post image
8 Upvotes

I have terrible allergies. Allergic to basically every living organism. But lately I cannot stop having back to back sinus infections, and overall sinus issues. My daughter I believe inherited my damn allergies and has been struggling as well.

I have in and I am about to take a strong dose of abx and steroid to try to get rid of what i have been dealing with for what seems like months. I also scheduled for possible surgery to remove polyps, clean up my sinuses, and fix my slight deviated septum.

I am also considering Dupixent—i think that’s the name of the injection the ENT mentioned.

What would you all suggest?
What about my daughter, do i just see how she does as time goes on or ask PCP to prescribe her allergy med/zyrtec for toddlers. She will be 2 in october.

I try to hold off but i don’t like suffering, and i don’t want her to have to either.

Help, i really don’t know what to do. i just want us to live free of sinus misery.

Unrelated photo of a beautiful double rainbow the other day so we don’t get overlooked lol.

Question/Poll Double compartment lunch bag for PlanetBox Rover

I’m looking for a bag with two compartments like the photo that is wide enough to fit the Rover on the bottom. A lot seem to be too small. Trying to find one on Amazon but all seem to fit a smaller plastic Bentgo style box.

Cleaning+Laundry Recs Alternative to Jet Dry dishwasher rinse aid?

Upvotes

My Bosch dishwasher has an internal dispenser for rinse aid like Finish Jet Dry and it requires it to be filled to run. I have used Jet Dry in the past but I’m out and I’m wondering if they is a better, lower tox alternative. I could just use white vinegar, but maybe there is a product that would work better as a rinse aid. I do have very hard water.

Question/Poll My mom just passed away and I need help preparing baby registry

Any response truly helps as I am overwhelmed. I have only spent time preparing for labor and have barely spent time on any registry. I am really having a difficult time gathering my thoughts about the stroller, car seat combinations, and the bassinet/where baby should sleep during the day?

I am trying to get the essentials where the baby sleeps and lays to be greenguard gold certified and as nontoxic as possible.
I’m worried about buying things that I don’t need as we have a small home and live minimally. With her loss, it’s just been really hard to concentrate on getting this registry together. I have only had time to work and just trying to keep myself healthy and read about preparing for labor and how to actually care for the newborn when they come.

And if anybody has any suggestions on videos to follow on how to take care of a newborn, I would sincerely appreciate it.

Question/Poll Worldschool Hubs/Intentional Family Coliving

Upvotes

I have been looking for a way to travel internationally that is based on staying in one place for a few weeks, has built-in educational childcare, and is structured around remote working parents. I just discovered worldschool hubs and family-centered coliving opportunities- has anyone else ever done these? It looks like the outgrowth of digital nomads having kids and wanting something a bit more permanent and I am totally here for it!

Question/Poll Most affordable reverse osmosis water filtration system?

I would like to invest in an RO water filtration system, but am oxymoronically on a budget. If you could provide your fav ones / how much they approximately cost to purchase / install + then separately for filter upkeep, I'd really appreciate!

Trying to make decisions as a long-term investment!

Question/Poll WiFi baby monitor for working parents??

My husband works late a few nights a week and I'm going back to work next month, so we really need a monitor we can both access without one person becoming a full-time monitor manager lol.

We're pretty set on WiFi/app access because of our schedules. I mostly want reliable alerts and easy sharing between two phones. Any recommendations?

Health Blue Around Lips

Around my 11 week olds lips gets blue. Usually in the bath. But we keep the bath hot (99 degrees) and the room hot too. I suspect it may be that she’s holding her breathe when we do her hair. Did anyone else have this? She loves the bath, no fussing

I took her to the pediatrician who just said she doesn’t know and not to worry. She said I can go to the cardiologist if I want to

Health Sad Mom- Forced Switch to Formula

UPDATE: the pediatrician and G.I. doc said that I should not switch the formula yet. They switched her to the medication** ***Lansoprazole.* I am going to try that and see if it helps. They also want me to wait until her stool sample comes back to see if it’s an intolerance. Has anyone been on this medication before and had good results?** **

It’s not really forced, more highly recommended. I have an 11 week old who has been projectile vomiting and spitting up bad. I’ve been working with the lactation consultant since the beginning trying everything to fix it. But she’s jumped from the 79 to 64 to 49 percentile on the growth chart. The lactation consultant says she rarely does this, but because the weighted feeds are showing she can’t keep down volume, the decline in the growth chart, and that she looks uncomfortable while eating despite a good latch, she wants me to try formula and see if it helps. She recommends pepticate

I love feeding her and it makes me so sad 😞 But I also want her to grow and be healthy.

Also: she said keep pumping and maybe I can reintroduce breast milk and eventually do a mix. Has anyone done this?

We’ve tried famotidine already with no luck. Also tried a strict elimination diet

Question/Poll What are the most fear mongered ingredients that aren't actually bad for you?

I'm the husband of a moderately granola mom, and I started going down the clean eating rabbit hole myself a few months ago. Started consuming a lot of content from confident people that had no evidence for the claims they made (usually trying to sell something), and it caused me to start developing a genuine fear of food. Thankfully, my wife pulled me back to sanity, and I started researching credible studies, meta-analyses, etc. showing that these ingredients I was so scared of, aren't actually that bad, especially in moderation. A big one for me was seed oils. Curious what other things people see fear mongered online that aren't a big deal.

Clothing Recs Really needing toddler shoe suggestions for the summer

My daughter is 20 months old and has been walking since 11 months. It’s HOTTT where we live. Year round, actually, not even just the summer. I’ve had her in wide toe box shoes from the beginning , most days she wears the ten little rubber sandals. We have some see Kai run sneakers but her feet are sooooo hot and sweaty when she takes them off that I just feel bad. Lately I’ve been feeling like she trips a lot, I want to make sure the shoes she’s wearing aren’t contributing to this. Yesterday she tripped and smacked her forehead on concrete; I know it happens and is unavoidable but I swear this girl always has some kind of bruise, bump, or scrape on her head or face somewhere and I’m so sick of it 💔

I am just desperate for good, easy to put on shoes that will support her and let her feel supported as she runs and climbs to no end!!! They don’t have to be crunchy or granola, I just trust this community most. Just good supportive shoes for a busy toddler. Thank you in advance!

Cleaning+Laundry Recs BranchBasics or Grove Concentrate Cleaning?

Truly leaning into the moderate realm here… We have a dog who’s getting older with occasional tummy upsets, and hope to be starting a family soon. So yes, I want to avoid most harsh chemicals, but I also want stuff to be clean.

Was about to make the jump and get BranchBasics for our new apt, but then saw they made some problematic posts… Pro: one concentrate for everything, seems to be loved on this sub. Cons: price and possible icky owners. Debating if their cleaner concentrate is still worth it, or if I should consider an alternative?

The Grove Co concentrates caught my eye after watching an ATK cleaning product review video. Con: I’d have to buy multiple concentrates. pro: my husband loves scents, but these seem a bit better than most cleaning products. (Yes, I know any fragrance aren’t as clean, but I also think Dawn PowerWash is a miracle product and some messes need the disinfecting power of bleach.) For me it seems like a step in the right direction, unlike Mrs Meyers which is greenwashed “counter perfume” and cleans minimally from what I’ve seen on this sub.

How do the Grove concentrates actually clean compared to BranchBasics?

Or should I stick with Method? I’m so overwhelmed…

Health Baby has dozens of food allergies.

She’s 10 months old and allergic to dairy, soy, egg, sesame, coconut, and ALL nuts. There are some other foods that give her hives, too, like beans and meats, but they’ve been inconsistent.

Bloodwork hasn’t been super helpful either. She tested positive for avocado, but can eat it just fine. She tested negative for pine nut, and one bite of pine nut butter caused hives and swelling.

Of course she has eczema, too.

If you have any experience with this, please share. How many allergies did they have? When did your baby outgrow them, if ever? What helped? How do you handle playdates and school? Have you ever had an emergency?

For us, this has been so sad and stressful …

Parenting Ideas for keeping my 16 month old entertained on a train

I have a very active 16 month old who doesn’t like to sit still and obviously at this age his attention span is short. I imagine a few of his regular toys and just looking out the window will keep him entertained for awhile but we have a 5 hour ride each way. So give me all your usual activities and your wildest hacks. Bonus points if I don’t have to pack 5000 things lol

Cleaning+Laundry Recs Fragrance free wet swiffer alternative?

Can anyone suggest a disposable Swiffer wet pad alternative that has zero fragrance?

Now, I have tried the washable microfibre pads and it just isn’t working for us. I need the easiest possible solution as I have a baby with special medical needs who has a ton of appointments, plus a big job. I can’t afford house cleaners, nor can we have anyone come into the house right now (immune issues). I already outsource all the chores that can be outsourced and I still feel like I’m failing with cleaning the floors, which is stressful because baby is crawling all over them! I am in Canada. Thank you!

Question/Poll Secondhand shopping during pregnancy

My husband and I are expecting our first in January! We are so excited and found out today the sex of the baby. I have been super controlled in shopping/spending knowing that I want to only get what we definitely need and wait until we are closer. HOWEVER, now that we found out something has unlocked in me that wants to start buying some clothes. For a combination of sustainability, style, and quality materials at cost, I want to buy a lot of baby's clothes secondhand and know that to do this effectively I should pace myself. However, I don't even know if I should be shopping at this point at all in case clothing is not size appropriate for the season. For reference, my husband is a big guy and was a big baby, and I am more average sized and was a small baby, so I am wondering if it is even worth it to buy newborn winter clothing for the first couple of months in case they are a big baby.

I'd love to hear how other parents who secondhand shopped approached this -- better to wait a little longer? Will my doctor be able to start to indicate to us how big (at least generally) the baby might be as we progress in the pregnancy? Should I stop overthinking and just accept that everything isn't going to necessarily fit the size and season and be okay with it?

Motherhood Sadness while breastfeeding

I’m (23F) currently 37 weeks pregnant with my second child! I’m planning to exclusively breastfeed again but when I breastfed my daughter I struggled with DMER, which was intense feelings of sadness and anxiety during my letdowns. Usually it goes away after three months or so. But I experienced these feelings with nearly every letdown until I ended up weaning her at 9 months old (I weaned her for reasons irrelevant to the dmer). Was hoping some of you ladies have any advice on it that I can heed this second time around? Any natural remedies? Thanks!!

Parenting 9 month old preoccupied with phone

My husband and I decided early on that we didn’t want to forbid phones and screens from our daughter. Screens are part of modern life and we wanted our daughter to see them as a tool rather than a forbidden fruit.

Her primary interactions with the phone are FaceTiming with family and taking pictures (we sometimes play a game where I put the camera on a timer and give it to her. You get some hilarious selfies!). She sees the occasional low stimulation video when we’re in desperate need of a break (Mr Roger’s clips, nature videos).

My husband has always used his phone for entertainment while around her, whether watching videos while sitting with her in her play pen or scrolling Reddit while he puts her to sleep. She generally ignores him and just does her own thing.

On the other hand, I have really tried to limit phone time when I’m with her and she is awake. Not necessarily because I don’t want her to see it, but because I’m trying to be more present with her. But now, whenever I pull out the phone to quickly answer a text or check my email, she’s all over it trying to grab at it. I end up having to put it away after since she’s so preoccupied by it being out.

Any thoughts on establishing healthy boundaries with her with the phone?

Question/Poll Noodle & boo fragrance free vs mustela sensitive fragrance free vs Le Roche lipkar?

Looking to purchase a new lotion and body wash for baby. He’s 5 months old and tubby Todd isn’t moisturizing his skin. In general his skin feels dry not flaky and he gets 1 eczema patch in his arm. I was using tubby Todd wash, lotion on his body and all over ointment on his face (because the lotion would cause a red flush on his face for some reason)
I just ordered noodle and boo but would love to hear your opinions on the that one or the others. Noodle & boo fragrance free vs mustela sensitive fragrance free vs Le Roche lipkar
Thank you! 😊

Question/Poll How much do / don’t you shop at Trader Joe’s?

I have done my grocery shppping at Trader Joe’s for as long as I can remember. But now that I have a baby and have been paying closer attention to ingredient labels, I am struggling with whether Trader Joe’s is a good option for us. It seems like even their items that should be minimally processed have a lot of extra ingredients compared to competitor options at other stores. The produce is also often iffy. Do you agree? Is it moderately granola of me to think that it’s not a good option to shop there anymore, or is it full granola 😂?
