Atlas/Micro-Trains Sale Explanation

We know the past week has brought a lot of emotion for the Micro-Trains team and for many long-time hobbyists who care deeply about the brand. A little context may be helpful.

Micro-Trains had been exploring a sale for several years as the owners prepared for retirement. Employee decisions made in recent weeks were handled by Micro-Trains itself, before the Atlas acquisition took effect. Those changes were not directed, initiated, or influenced by Atlas. Atlas' only role was expressing interest in interviewing Micro-Trains employees for potential job opportunities.

Our role now is clear: preserve the Micro-Trains product line, protect its legacy, and build a strong future for the brand. We have already begun meeting with former Micro-Trains employees and hope to bring talented people onto the new "Micro-Trains by Atlas" team. On a question we’ve seen come up often:

None of the U.S.-based tooling is being moved to China.

Micro-Trains had some limited production in China in recent years using the same factories Atlas uses today, but all U.S.-based tooling remains stateside at the moment. As part of the long-term production plan, molds will currently be transferred to trusted suppliers in Vietnam, where quality, cost stability, and production capacity are strongest. After careful review, this is the best path to ensure Micro-Trains continues into 2026 and well beyond. Without this step, the brand’s future would have been uncertain at best. At the same time, all drawings, computer files, research, archival materials, and selected equipment are being relocated to Atlas in Hillside, New Jersey, where research and development, engineering, logistics and overall product management will continue. We are also evaluating which aspects of production and assembly may continue in the United States as we balance quality, cost, and long-term sustainability.

Our goal is simple: ensure Micro-Trains not only survives, but thrives for the next generation of modelers."

Happy Thanksgiving to All,

Atlas Model Railroad Co. Inc.

This is one half of a small inglenook puzzle I’ve been building on and off, this is the first time I’m doing anything - wiring, track laying, ballast, etc. I’m really proud of how it looks and thought I’d quit being a lurker of the sub and finally post something.

Help Needed Making sure the decoder is on nice and snug

Installed my first dcc decoder and it went on pretty easy. Its just a ljttle on the loose and wobbly side. Im pretty sure its on correctly, but I just want to make sure its not going to slip loose if the loco is in its box, but the box gets tipped over. Or if the cat decides to be an absolute menace while my back is turned.

Locomotives Brought to see my little Spectrum 4-4-0 to meet its full sized counterpart, I wonder what they’d say to each other if they could?

If anyone is worried about me doing something against the rules, the staff were totally okay with this!! They even let me get even closer pass the barrier to put a different model in the middle of the pilot the next day!!

The 1:1 scale locomotive you see here is an 1897 4-4-0 known as Detroit & Lima Northern No.7, the only surviving D&LN steam locomotive and Henry Ford’s personal favorite steam locomotive when it operated under the Detroit Toledo & Irontron. Ford liked this locomotive so much, alongside DT&I No.45 as early as 1932, WAY before the preservation movement of the late 1950’s, and was restored to operation back in 2013, and is currently about to receive a brand new cab since the old one is rotting away (where I’ll try and save a shard of it since they’ll most likely chop it up for wood)

The little HO model is a Bachmann Spectrum “modern” 4-4-0 in unlettered Russian Iron Blue. While the model itself is based off a Maryland & Pennsylvania prototype built by Richmond instead of Baldwin, it’s visually a VERY similar looking locomotive to D&LN No.7, right down to having a nearly identical livery, and the staff who operate and take care of the real locomotive LOVED this model, one even asking where I got it from as he stared at it in awe, for he was holding a model of one of the locomotives he operates!!

And overall, I’m very happy that these two got to meet, but also I want to see anyone else’s photos of their models with the real life counterparts, I would LOVE to see!!!!

If you’re wondering, idk if something is seriously wrong with their DCC controller or what but it kept on resetting to speed level 0 and switching directions which it did at the end of the video.

Question Newest addition. Santa Fe Dash 8.

I noticed the handrails are a bit different along with the ditch lights in comparison to other models.
Seems this model mightve had work done?
The Santa Fe paint always looked great and the Dash 8’s were definitely a good example of that.

Help Needed Can i get help please? I cant figure out how to take this MTH PS2 era 4-6-0 boiler off to grease and service it. The instructions allude to screws in the front of the chassis underside that seemingly aren't there, and i tried to unscrew other ones to no avail.

Lately I've been overhauling a lot of my locomotives. I like this little Iberten classic a lot, but the detail on it isn't fantastic. So I wanted to really make this one my own and see if I could improve it a little in the process.

For the paintjob I was inspired by the lovely rust red AMTF Nr.5 I saw last year in Luxemburg.

I tediously stripped the original paint, spray painted primer and then spray painted red. Rest was painted with brushes, including the fine striping that I decided to also free-hand for lack of better alternatives. It's not perfect, but I think passable. Finally some weathering to finish it off.

Quite happy with this one too, and a nice addition to the color palette of my loco shed.

Question First layout - advice on how to plan properly

Hi all,

I recently moved and now have the space to start my first layout.

I'm in n scale with Kato uni track and have a space of 120cm by 180cm approximately.

I'd like to start with a double track oval, and gradually upgrade it. ( Sidings, train station)

Kato's variation sets seem like a good way to start and progressively upgrade, but I'm a bit confused between the v11, v14 and v16 and what would be right for me. Or I should I buy the tracks individually?

I've seen there is a few softwares available, but I'm not sure which one to choose from.

Thanks for your help

First time making a real setup, but I’m pretty proud of what I’ve done so far (ballast took way too long lol)! I’ve got a lot more to go, planning on putting a small airport on the back half behind my Main Street once that’s done.

Electrical For soldering track and speakers, do you prefer wire or paste?

Trying to find a decent solder, the one my iron came with was said to be on the cheaper side so im looking into alternatives. Never soldered before
