Shop Talk Discussion (General) [GUIDE] How to fix auto brightness after a screen replacement for iPhones

Theres very little information on this so I decided to make this for people who are new to repairs or are replacing their screen for the first time. This mainly applies to iPhones 13 - 16. I havent tested this on others but it could work.

When replacing your screen you will also need to transfer the proximity sensor. After doing so, iOS 18 now restores Face ID and True tone functionality but what it doesn't do is restore auto brightness. If this is a big issue then there are two ways to go about fixing this depending on if you broke your proximity sensor when transferring it. To test if your proximity sensor is working, simply place a call and bring the phone to your ear. If the screen goes off then it is working. If it doesn't, then its likely not connected properly or you broke it. This repair is not cheap unless you have access to repair shop tools like programmers etc.

This repair requires:

- A programmer (JCID V1SE as example)

- Corresponding True Tone board for the programmer that supports the phone you are repairing

If you broke the proximity flex then you will also need:

- Corresponding Proximity Flex board for the programmer that supports the phone you are repairing

- Windows PC

- A programmable Proximity Flex such as a JCID one (important: It needs to be a programmable one like JCID, non programmable generic ones will not work)

- JCID Programming Software

- 3U Tools

If you didn't break the proximity flex: Using the programmer, you will need to read the data from the old screen and write to the new one. This is it. It will restore auto brightness. Also make sure you are on iOS 18 to restore true tone and face id.

If you did break the proximity flex, unfortunately this process gets a lot more complex:

-Read the data from the old screen to the new screen using the true tone programmer board.

-You will then need to hook up your phone to a windows PC.

-Using 3U tools, download the corresponding iOS version the phone is currently on

-Start up JCID Programming Windows Software and you will need to "brush" the phone. There are guides of this online. Once the software is done brushing the phone you will need to boot into recovery mode and flash the software you downloaded using 3u Tools.

-Once the phone is booted up again, connect the phone to the JCID V1SE programmer with the Proximity board attached to the programmer. Connect the programmable JCID Proximity flex to the programmer board and "bind" it to the phone.

Warning: Some JCID Programmable Prox flexes actually need to be soldered (such as the iPhone 14 Pro) so take this into consideration. Most dont though.

-Install the proximity sensor to the display and boot up the phone again.

-Make sure you are on iOS 18 to also restore Face ID and true tone. This process will restore your auto brightness

Both of these methods will restore true tone but as you can see one is a lot more simple then the other so be very careful with your proximity flexes!

Shop Talk Discussion (General) UV glue or Laminated glue for sticking the glass on the amoled?

I've been researching about fixing phones with broken glass and it always ends up on two roads. You either use a UV glue or Laminate the screen. The more I get into it the UV glue gets bubbles more (often due to user error) but it's cheap and tedious while the lamination does not but you need alot of fancy machines from China. Has anyone ever had any issues/experience with both of the methods and got any tips or horror stories about replacing the glass?

Hello, Samsung Galaxy S20 FE, original screen cracked, bought AMOLED (with fingerprint sensor incorporated) screen first from a local store, installed it properly according to a youtube video of the breakdown, screen looked washed. I returned it, ordered another off Aliexpress this time. Installed it, screen looked good, all the right colors. Fortune didn't favor me and I broke it the 3rd day, I couldn't believe it. Ordered another from the same store, same product, installed it, now the screen looks washed again like the first time. They're basically the same chinese product, the first one was also packaged similarly. I tried disconnecting everything, mainly battery and screen connectors and reconnecting, but still washed colors, what else can I try?

Lvl 2 (screens, batteries, camera, etc. swaps) iPhone 15 pro with replacement battery not showing correct percentage

Recently purchased an iPhone 15 pro with a replacement battery. Battery shows as “unknown” in Apple repairs & services but it has 100% battery health. However the phone seems to drain incredibly fast. Like today I lost 95% of battery with 2 hours of screen on time. However, when the phone gets to 1%, it lasts for like 2+ hours. I tried draining to 0% and letting charge to 100%+2 hours but that didn’t see, to help.

I’ve also noticed when the phone completely dies, holding the power button doesn’t revel the dead battery symbol, it shows the Apple logo for about 10 seconds before going blank which leads me to think the battery isn’t calibrated right. Thoughts?

Lvl 2 (screens, batteries, camera, etc. swaps) does face id still work if earpiece speaker is replaced on 12 pro max?

i know ios 18 added some calibration features and what not. Wondering if this works with the earpiece aswell, my guess is initially no. My mom dropped the phone in paint and the sound - sounds muffeled. i tried opening and rinsing the loudspeaker and earpiece vents but it didnt help all that much. Im ordering up new dustseals for the loudspeaker and a new screen. But i wasnt sure about the earpiece speaker.

Lvl 0 (DIYer) Where do I start with this repair? Can it be Fixd? iPhone 8 powers off during restore and returns to Recovery Mode

Hi,

I'm trying to restore an iPhone 8, but every restore attempt fails.

The iPhone enters both Recovery Mode and DFU Mode normally.

The restore starts successfully, but at around 20–24% (RestoreOS) the phone suddenly powers off, disconnects from the computer, and after a few seconds boots back into Recovery Mode.

Finder (macOS):

  • During the restore, when the iPhone enters the RestoreOS stage, Finder suddenly shows "Looking for iPhone..." as if the device has disconnected.
  • The restore eventually fails with Error 9.
  • At that point, the iPhone has already rebooted back into Recovery Mode.
  • The same behavior occurs even when restoring from DFU Mode.

3uTools (macOS):

  • Detects the device normally.
  • The restore fails with Error -11 during "Unmounting filesystem".
  • In iTunes Mode, it reports Error 4013.

Windows:

  • In iTunes Mode, 3uTools also reports Error 4013.
  • 3uTools detects the device normally, but the restore fails with the same Error -11 during "Unmounting filesystem".

Additional information:

  • I replaced the battery myself because the original battery was damaged.
  • I don't have an original Apple Lightning cable.
  • I tested using a Baseus USB-C to Lightning cable and a generic USB-A to Lightning cable from AliExpress.
  • The result is exactly the same with both cables.

One more thing I noticed:

  • In Windows Device Manager, there are two devices related to the iPhone (Apple Mobile Device USB Control and Apple Mobile Device USB Device/Data) with yellow warning icons.
  • This makes me wonder if there could be a driver issue, although 3uTools still detects the iPhone and communicates with it normally.

Could this still be a driver issue, or is it more likely to be a hardware problem, such as the NAND, Tristar/Hydra, battery, baseband, or the logic board?

Has anyone experienced something similar or have any suggestions on what I should test next?

Thanks!

Lvl 0 (DIYer) Where do I start with this repair? Can it be Fixd? iPhone 12 mini boot loop - help!

Hi everyone, last night my phone was being a little glitchy and weird (some keys not working properly, not sending messages after clicking 'send') so I decided to turn it off and on again. Soon after, I realised the phone had been stuck on the white apple logo for a while - as far as I can make out this is a boot loop. I've got an Apple charging cable and I've tried updating via Finder, but I don't think the phone has any space (I'm getting a 1110 message). I've downloaded 3uTools but for some reason the device is not registering as 3uTools only says 'Please connect device to computer via USB cable'. Does anyone have any advice??

So i recently removed my s21 charging port because it was broken. Wireless power share does work, but results in a bootloop (i think because of not enough power). A regular wireless charger does entirely nothing? What can cause this?

so i repaired a fair share of ip11 and it pisses me off so much that the battery connector and shielding are under the lcd cables, i still prefer to not risk it and disconnect that before but... it feels just like petty apple engineers that did that just to mess with us and no other reason, it's not gonna stop a repair, it's just well annoying

Repair Shop customer seeking a 2nd opinion or advice. [Help] iPhone 16 Pro SIM tray not flush with frame on one side

Hello! I have a problem with the SIM-card tray on my iPhone 16 Pro. When I insert the tray, one side sits perfectly flush with the frame, but the other side sticks out just a little. It’s a bit noticeable and you can feel it under your finger, which is somewhat annoying. Is this something I should worry about? I’m not sure what to make of the water resistant or how it might affect the phone’s performance in the future. Right now it reads the SIM card without any problems. Unfortunately, I can no longer return it
