go to your room AirBnB trying to charge an extra $150 for "severe dirtiness" and being left in an "upsetting state"

The pictures were sent by the cleaners after we requested photos of "the state we left it in"

The messages she said:

"The trash was not thrown it was full, there was a pan full of used oil. Food stuck all over the table runner and in the kid bedroom upstairs there was foil with a burnt side with substance. My cleaner charged me an extra $150 due to the sever dirtiness.

If you took pictures before you left please share because what i walked into was very upsetting and it needs to be cleaned very thoroughly due to the used foil with substance. I have families and children that stay here."

"The trash was clearly not disposed. The table runner had food stuck all in it. That was thrown away. The room had that very strange foil. No one has ever left my home in those state and it is not the cleaning service job to dispose of oil. You could have reached out you did not. The living room was disgusting with crumbs all over the floor. I’ve never had my house left in such a terrible condition. This is all she provided but I myself stopped by and visibly saw the mess. If you have proof you didn’t leave it that way then please send pictures."

In fairness to her, we did leave a pot of oil. We didnt want to dispose of that on the property or down the drain, but thats on us. We disposed of the other garbage bags and left them outside, we forgot the one final one in the trash. The rest of the dishes were done, the towels left out and piled like requested, we spent plenty of time cleaning.

Then the "drug thing". The couple in that room said they never even saw what was left, but the owner is essentially saying theres left over meth, which is insane. I can guarantee our friends didnt casually smoke meth in their room.

Are we being absurd not entertaining this? Has anyone else dealt with this after renting a BNB. We were there for two days.

Update: after responding with the candy wrapper and AI trashcan, the lady dropped it and said she'll pay the fee, considering the matter done. Will likely report this to AirBnB anyhow. Thank you all for pointing that out because it's definitely something we missed, not looking too closely while we're still on vacation. We were more blown away at the language and accusations made.

And for everyone telling us AirBnB sucks, we know. But we have a big group get together every summer and there arent many other options than can host 8-12 people.

We'll certainly take significantly more precautions going forward, but to this point we had a pretty good track record with BnBs and our hosts.

A strange foil? Isn't that a Dove chocolate wrapper?

Edit: a poster below has correctly identified it as a Hershey's Kiss with almond.

2.1k

u/vwscienceandart 22d ago

It’s an almond hershey kiss. Terrifying “substance” if you’re allergic to tree nuts, but otherwise…. 🤣🤣

368

u/10000Didgeridoos 22d ago

The kid was clearly using that foil for heroin

It may be a mini hersheys with almonds wrapper. Either way, if they touched a flame to it at any point and heated it up it'd be more damaged then what they're showing

u/Impossible-Corner494 21d ago

They got a taste of “ palm oil” and said fuck it, I’m leaving this garbage can full and bedding dishevelled.

16

Serious question: why do people still use Airbnb? The base rate isn't cheaper than a hotel anymore, outrageous cleaning fees, dealing with Air-fucking-BNB when there's an issue, and Karen scammer landlords like in the OP.

I swore off Airbnb years ago because once their stock went public the prices went up such a crazy amount that hotels actually seem like a better deal now.

Checked again a few months later and the host was still on Airbnb under the same name.

Lots of house cleaning business clean air BBs. Alot of the "cleaning fee" that you see on those websites are from them hiring a service

104

u/lockednchaste 22d ago

The AirBNBs with a mile long list of rules that charge extra when you don't empty the trash aren't contracting the services you speak of.

35

u/toyification_girl 22d ago

Sure they are, to an Airbnb property management company that takes a 30% cut and runs their own cleaning company on the side that they hire out themselves to double dip

Most are ran this way now, the days of a single owner just wanting side cash renting it out sometimes is long gone. A few around sure but not really.

You can literally see the almond in the picture of the "foil with substance". Holy fuck that is scary. I'd be reporting this AirBnB to every single outlet I could, probably even trying to get police involved.

They literally used AI to try and scam you out of a LOT of money.

128

u/fullshard101 21d ago

Even if there was real garbage in the can, it in NO WAY would be worth a 150$ cleaning fee. Thats a 30 second job. The fact you were even a little bit against the OP here is shocking.

67

u/Zealousideal_Cow_341 21d ago

People are finding out why hotels exist in the first place

57

u/alphazero927 21d ago

More specifically why hospitality regulations exist. Because hotels would absolutely try this shit if they could get away with it, but we realized years ago that letting hotels fuck with their customers destroys tourism and business travel, so they made it illegal

13

u/Other_World BLUE 21d ago

I don't even stay at fancy hotels, but when I'm traveling the last thing I want to do is chores. I understand if you have a party of like 20 people and need a whole cabin in the woods or some shit AirBnB has it's place. But personally for me, I'm trying to relax and experience new cultures when I travel. Doing the dishes just isn't on that list.

Right? What are they even trying to show with the unmade beds? Surely the bedding needs to be changed?!

16

u/stevedropnroll 21d ago

Oh, they want you to remove the sheets and pillowcases, if not wash them yourself entirely. It's fucking ridiculous. AirBNB is basically a bunch of owners who expect the same responsibility as a landlord (basic property maintenance while the tenants cook, clean and launder the bedding for themselves) for a fatter paycheck than a hotel. I'm surprised they haven't started asking guests to mow the lawn on longer stays.

Long before AirBnB we used to stay at a vacation cabin that my friend's parents owned. There were often guests because of the nature of it, and they had established their own rules.

Whenever we were done, we were to run all of the laundry (sheets and towels) through the wash, and start the dryer, we could leave the last load in the dryer. We needed to wash all dishes (could leave them in the dishwasher but nothing out), wash the windows, vacuum the carpets, clean off countertops, sweep the fireplace, empty all of the trash bins, dust the windowsills, railings, ceiling fan, etc.

After all this we would call a cleaner, and leave them $200 to come out and do god knows what.

21

u/timsfsn 21d ago

Asking guests to wash the windows is next level insanity.

They charged 150 extra on top of what? Lol Airbnb is such a scam. All of this could've been cleaned in less than an hour.

u/Meronkulous 22d ago

Try 8 minutes.

32

u/sixteenlegs 21d ago

I just saw a docu about Mallorca…it’s awful. Locals live in tiny trailers because Air BnB has jacked housing prices so high they can’t afford to live at all near where they work. 12 hour shifts, 2 hour bus ride each way… 😕

211

u/CommieDog2525 22d ago

Honestly. At least in a hotel you don't get charged extra for normal cleaning services

132

u/grickygrimez 21d ago

It's almost like as a country we spent decades creating laws and regulations to protect business and guests who rent hotel rooms and AirBnB lobbied to skirt all of those laws.

42

u/PissBiggestFan 21d ago

you don’t understand, there’s an app! laws can’t apply to an app

edit: prediction markets are gambling. BNPL is a unregulated line of credit. Uber is unlicensed taxis. i genuinely don’t understand how any of it is still up.

I’m taking my family on vacation next week and everybody was like “you should rent an Airbnb” and I was like no, I’m gonna get a cabin through the hotel because I’ve seen so many horror stories about Airbnb‘s

15

u/ObjectSmall 21d ago

I'm switching back to hotels because every Airbnb I book, no matter how nice it is, ends up having crappy beds and horrible pillows. I've had such bad luck. It's like everyone is buying the $150 Amazon special mattress and the $200 Wayfair dining set and charging a lot because the place photographs okay but is horribly uncomfortable (and don't even get me started on the daylight-temp 100W bulbs in every fixture).

I've failed and shamed myself so many times, lol.

u/TheDarbiter 22d ago

Didn’t you pay a cleaning fee when booking? How could they ask for more money on top of an already ridiculous fee? I fucking hate air bnb.

99

u/keevanado 22d ago

they’re saying the “mess” goes above and beyond the standard cleaning and fee so they’re attempting to charge an additional $150.

I’m curious what the standard cleaning includes and how much the cleaners get paid for it.

if they’re freaking about having to vacuum up a few bits of paper off the carpet, a chocolate bar wrapper and a trash bin that needs to be emptied then I can’t imagine they’re really keen on things like scrubbing tubs & toilets.

also the trash bin looks absolutely filthy on the outside which would be a feat to do in 2 days so I’m assuming the cleaners suck at wiping things like that down too

31

u/TheDarbiter 22d ago

That’s what I’m getting at as well. This looks like a regular amount of trash and messiness that’s expected from people staying at a place, especially if they’re already paying someone to clean it afterwards. Why would I waste my time doing anything if I’m paying someone to do it for me?

9

u/keevanado 22d ago

yeah it’s wild the list of things some hosts ask others to do merely to skimp out on the cleaners actually doing a mediocre job.

I’ve stayed at a place that legit had almost an entire dog’s worth of hair blowing around under the main bed 🤮

I was staying there with my Sphynx cat and he came out from under there with fur on him - and it for sure wasn’t his 🤮 🤮 🤮

my dumbass should have complained but I usually just end up cleaning and leaving the place in a much better state then I got it in.

especially since complaining usually just means they’ll send a cleaner over while you’re there and I don’t want to be intruded upon

Chocolate wrappers, beds unmade, trash not taken out? Super gross if they weren’t gonna wash the bedding anyways, this is ridiculous

102

u/keevanado 22d ago

beds should never be made imo.

relying on and trusting previous houseguests to put clean bedding on for the next guests is 🤮

it’s been many moons since I’ve used airbnb but from my recollection, the request was to strip beds or, if there’s a washing machine, to place them in there on your way out so the cleaners can deal with them

59

u/Wise-Chemist-8751 22d ago

OMG. I was so pissed at one house I left a nasty review. They expected us to wash and fold the towels after we were done. Didn’t tell us till the night before. So I spent hours doing that.

  1. WTF, how is that my problem
  2. How many people just folded the dirty towels and stuck them in the clean bin 🤢

38

u/thejoeface 21d ago

That’s why it’s absolutely fucking terrible because you never know who will fold dirty towels that look clean or remake beds with used sheets. You just don’t trust people to do that. (also it’s just fucking stupid to foist that task on to guests - that’s why you pay a cleaner)

18

There are a lot of attempts by AirBNB owners to suck extra cash by claiming unacceptable items or trash etc have been found. It's a known problem, but AirBNB basically does nothing to help end users who are scammed. They've often needed to be provided with overwhelming evidence of fraud against a property owner before they're on your side.

I’m not in the US but I do cleans for airbnbs and the like in Europe. This looks normal to me. Crumbs on the floor? I vacuum all the floors regardless so it wouldn’t matter. Someone forgot to take out a bin? Mildly annoying but not a difficult or time consuming job. Food on the table runner? Okay, I put all towels, runners, flannels, bedding etc through the wash anyway. That’s a chocolate wrapper ffs, just put it in the bin. The oil is probs on you, you could have asked how they would like it disposed of. But, in my books that’s not the worst. I have seen things lol.

I call bullshit. None of this would make me charge that much extra. Worth noting I charge by the hour, this would be an extra 20 mins at most.

65

u/OKCorners 22d ago

Oh the horror, crumbs on the floor, trash in the garbage bin. This host is delusional. I’m so over Airbnb.

8

u/krone6 21d ago

You should see the outside! There's dirt everywhere and people can never keep things spotless. Sometimes in spring and summer white dust balls fall to the ground and then in Autumn leaves are there. It's incredibly unkept! It's upsetting and causing an anxiety attack. I don't know how I'm going to go through another year of this kind of living.

/s /s /s

Seriously, that's how the writing sounds from the host.

u/Afraid-Common3063 22d ago

Why are all of the labels in the garbage illegible and distorted? So strange and looks like a fake AI picture (not saying it is just that it looks like it)

The house doesn’t look messy to me. This seems very much expected as normal cleaning that needs to be done after having guests in a rental house. A lot of airbnb hosts actually tell guests not to make the beds since they have to wash and change the sheets anyway.

The garbage bag and pan of oil aren’t great and definitely worth an apology (maybe offer to buy a new pan) but everything else looks fine and this owner is definitely overreacting or trying to get money out of you.

32

u/ChoosinTX 22d ago

100% AI!

29

u/UnwovenWeb 22d ago

Yeah what's with that coke can???

38

u/thejoeface 21d ago

The garbage is totally AI and that makes me not trust any other photo. And it’s so weird because every single photo is showing things that don’t matter in the slightest, including the full bag of trash. A garbage can that’s not even overflowing should be a normal task for the cleaning staff.

The oil is not great, but they’re not even showing a photo of that, which makes me suspect none of these photos were even taken recently.

11

u/thegreasiestgreg 22d ago

I would never ever ever apologize over a full trash can, that is absolutely insane. For a 2 bedroom place they are most likely spending hundreds of dollars just to stay a single night, the very least these hosts can do is take out the trash.

11

u/Estelial 21d ago

the longer you look at that can of soda the weirder it gets

As a person who used to actually clean upsetting/disgusting places, this is literally nothing, even if squints the chocolate wrapper was drug paraphernalia. This person or persons are trying wring some money from you.

I once cleaned an 8 stall bathroom in which every single surface was some type venue diagram of blood, excrement, and umm... snow? Idk what kids these days are calling it and im not sure of the censor level for this sub lol. It took 6 hours to clean, and I believe the only increase in pay I got was my boss buying me lunch. That was an "upsetting state". Not this walk in the park abnb deal

13

u/cluelessinlove753 21d ago

Trash photo is AI

That should be enough for Airbnb to side with you and boot owners from the platform

I wouldn’t even entertain the rest of it. I would just say “we left it completely clean as per their instructions. The photos don’t represent the state we left it in. Several of the photos are clearly AI with the most obvious example of being the label/markings in the trash.”

I would also report them for fraud to their local police and check with the city to see if they have any required STR permits. A bogus cleaning fee is bad. A totally manufactured one using AI photos is the kind of thing that I make infinite time to avenge.

32

u/Manmer_Nwah 22d ago

Stop supporting AirBnB. They eat up the housing market and are always nothing but predatory.

10

u/Dultra 21d ago

Report them for using AI and get them banned from Airbnb. Wanting to scam an extra few bucks and losing their rental busnines

9
