Imagine the immense power of this concept: A perfect closed circle: Mike started out as a young, fearless multi-instrumentalist who took on the music industry. Today his son Luke runs Tilehouse Studios in London, where he actively keeps Mike’s original analog gear, legendary Harrison consoles and Ampex cassette decks alive! A perfect handover: One CD would capture Mike's deep symphonic heritage and songwriting prowess, while the other would be loaded with Luke's fresh, hard rock drive - all using the exact same analog equipment that originally created these timeless gems from the 70s and 80s! So I’ve always been - like many here I assume - captivated by MO’s duality in long masterpieces and short masterpieces (I mean mostly the deeply emotional ballads with short but very painful guitar solos). And now, listening to Five Miles Out, I’ve realized something: I’ve always been into artists who were also something else, and noticeably so. Like being a lawyer in Kafka’s work, or being a doctor in Bulgakov’s/Csáth Géza’s work. And now I’ve realized that for instance TB and Amarok give me the safety but also curiosity of a long and securely conducted flight, while the uneasy feeling in like, idk, Poison Arrows or Crime of passion or g-d forbid, Moonlight shadow, that of the drama of falling and trying to fight for your life while slowly giving in and picturing everything one last time. Therefore, his obsession with and fear of flying (well, pilot-ness just like the aforementioned lawyer-ness and doctor-ness) is always present. Does this make sense? Does anyone agree? Haha

A message from a dedicated collector from the Czech Republic: A concept for the perfect double album

Hi Mike, and greetings to the entire community, My name is Martin, I'm from the Czech Republic, and Mike Oldfield's music has been with me my whole life. As a dedicated fan, I own his complete discography twice - on CD for regular listening and on vinyl as a pure collector's treasure (including rarities like Tubular Beats and the super deluxe edition of Man on the Rocks).

Mike, I know you're enjoying a well-deserved retirement in the Bahamas, but as a fan, I truly believe that your heart cannot exist without music. I would like to present you with a concept for one final, magnificent double album that would perfectly seal your incredible career and bridge two major eras of your work:

Disc 1: Pure Instrumentation (Roots & Sun) A return to the Ommadawn and Amarok format. One long, 45-minute, purely hand-played symphony without computers. A musical fusion that blends the deep, melancholic Celtic roots of old England with the sunny, free and rhythmic atmosphere of the Bahamas where you now live. The album would culminate in your characteristic, grandiose and loud finale with guitar and drums.

Disc 2: Echo of Voices (Return of the Legends) A celebration of your songwriting and producing mastery from the 80s and 90s. This album would reunite the legendary voices of your history in brand new songs:

Maggie Reilly in a crystal clear pop-folk song carrying the spirit of Moonlight Shadow.

Anita Hegerland in a deep, atmospheric and mature ballad.

Luke Spiller in an energetic rock song with sharp, biting guitar solos.

Cara Dillon, Rosa Cedrón or Sally Dwyer in dreamy, Celtic-ambient chill-out vibes.

The whole album would end with a strong, tribal finale with drums and Jabula's choir.

Mike, you've already proven that you listen to your fans - after all, that's how Return to Ommadawn was made. This double album would be the best gift for all of us and the perfect final chapter to one of the most beautiful stories in music history.

About two years ago I uploaded my first attempt at recreating this section, and I’m very grateful that it received around 1,400 views and many kind reactions.

Because I have always loved this beautiful part of Ommadawn, I decided to revisit the recording and create a new version.

In this update I:
•created a stereo mix
•re-recorded some instrumental parts
•adjusted the video layout so the instruments are easier to see

All parts were performed and recorded by me through multi-track recording.

This was done with great respect for the music of Mike Oldfield.
I hope you might enjoy this new version.

Thanks for having me!:) I’m very new here as well as to M. O.’s music, which is surely becoming a hyperfixation for me (and very helpful in finally starting to actually acknowledge that I’m autistic, a good five years after the already late diagnosis (I’m almost 23)). To me, his music feels like an “autistic magnet” (or neurodivergent magnet in general), well, especially Tubular Bells (and his dedication to it!), but also some of the shorter ballads and the way they capture feelings from odd but very natural ways.

Does anyone have a similar “awakening” story (anythint, not just autism; also mental health or identity)? I’m very curious if I’m making this up because I am on this particular part of my personal journey, or if this has been noticed by others.

Having been a Mike Oldfield fan for over 40 years (first heard Tubular Bells when i was 8) i had no idea this existed, until an hour ago. I had to come here and share in case anyone else, like me, had no idea this insanely good demo exists.

Mike is the most beautiful human i know to exist. If i ever met him i'd likely just burst into tears and thank him, repeatedly. I'd be awestruck.

I finally found me a copy in a 2nd hand record store in Utrecht, The Netherlands. It’s playing now and it’s like new (no crackling or hissing).
Fun fact: this isn’t a ‘real’ Mike Oldfield album and ‘Pekka Pohjola’ isn’t the album title (as I thought for a long time), but the name of a bass player and composer from Finland. My wonderful kids are taking me to the Robin Smith Tubular Bells concert in Australia this coming Friday, really looking forward to it.

They are all in their 20s. Middle daughter is a big fan, Tubular Bells III is one of her favourite albums. She took me to the Tubular Bells performed by Two a few years ago which was amazing.
