Admissions Anyone transferred to Midd in the spring?

Wassup people! I’m international and just finished my freshman year at a T70 LAC in the west studying Econ and Politics (went there cuz they were the ones that give me the most financial aid and my hs grades weren’t good enough for Midd). I’ve been doing well academically in college (4.0/deans list/ Interviews with political figures like Obama and Biden) and Middlebury has been on my mind since high school. I’d like to take a shot and try to apply for spring entrance but I’m afraid the fact that I need aid may drastically reduces my chances of being accepted.

I’m part of a program called United world colleges and get like 40k every year but the school i attend has to complete the rest, so I’m wondering if Midd would be nice enough to invest in me with 40k more if I get in.
Has anyone transferred in the spring ? If yes did you end up getting a scholarship? Or is asking for financial aid means automatic rejection?

Thanks to anyone who will share insights 🙏🙏

internships/job-placement Do many students transfer out? Why?

I recently saw a now-deleted post that states a lot of international students - especially students from China - transfer out of Middlebury. However, after about 5 minutes of looking on LinkedIn, I found many domestic students also transfer out. Google says the retention rate is 94%, which seems high but that means 6% of students don’t like it at all and choose to transfer. I have also heard that retention rates are not accurate of the student body, as apparently Colgate has a 93% retention rate, yet a large chunk don’t really enjoy it. Why is this?

Admissions UVA vs Northwestern vs Middlebury

Good morning! I am a prospective transfer student and need to decide if I want to TED! I am between UVA, NU, or Middlebury and can’t decide. I 100% want to major in history and/or econ and REALLY want to study abroad, and either work in finance or some place abroad after graduating, but eventually want to go to grad school. I love NUs campus when I toured this summer, but have heard the quarter system is outrageously fast and the winters are brutal. I love Middlebury’s global aspect the most out of any school and like the small classes, but Middlebury Vermont doesn’t really hold up to Charlottesville or Evanston from what I have seen. I think UVA is a hybrid between both of them, and want to hear your thoughts!
Thanks

extracurriculars How’s the party life here for non athletes?

I’m a freshman coming here in the fall. I’m not an athlete, but I want to party and get lit every week. I literally turned down some of the biggest party schools (UT Austin, UW Madison) in the country to attend Midd lol. Is it easy to get invited to parties every weekend? Is alcohol common? Ima guy btw. Thanks

Classes Abstract Algebra w/ Dorman

What's up guys, I just wanted to know a couple things about dormans abstract Algebra and the difficulty of the class itself. I've heard from peers that Dorman is an easier professor and with one class left to complete my math minor, I'm trying to maintain a high GPA for both recruiters and/or grad school.

Basically what I'm trying to ask is whether or not it is easier to get a good grade in this class compared to other math classes at Midd. I would also like to know what his teaching style consists of and whether or not I should choose to complete my minor with this class or another.

discussion/other New streetlights

Just wanted to say thanks for the new street lights at the crosswalks! They light the area much better and I’m psyched to see that they push light down - light pollution is a real thing and anything we can do to direct artificial light to where it’s needed is good.

Thanks Middlebury! :) (grateful Bridport resident)

Classes Advice on picking a language?

Right now I'm between German and Japanese, though I'm open to other options, I studied Chinese in high school and would like to try something new.

A few things I'd appreciate hearing about:

  • Any department you had a really good experience with, and what made it good
  • Whether you studied abroad through your language, and how that went
  • Whether you'd recommend starting a language freshman year or holding off
  • Things I should consider

Mostly just looking for honest takes from people who've been through it. Thanks.

Admissions Doctor of Modern Language Program (DML)

Hi! I am an early career language instructor and I am thinking of deepening theory and practice through the program! But I’m still 24 and only spent one year as a full time instructor and two years as teaching assistant. So maybe I would be considered as a candidate who doesn’t have enough teaching experiences, which puts me disadvantage in admission??? If you are in this doctoral program/graduated from this program, please tell me your experience and if possible, please share your post-graduation career and how the degree affected your career! Any language program is welcomed!

Campus/town what's something you wish Middlebury had?

I'm looking into Middlebury and was curious: hows the student life on campus? Ive already done my research on the academics side and what I want but I'd love to hear what current students think of middleburys social life ( if it has one lol ). I would be coming out of state so I dont know much about the area.

Campus/town Student Climate

Hey! I am looking into Middlebury as an out-of-state student and wanted to hear from students about their experiences. I am interested in policy and Spanish. I am looking for a school with civic engagement where I can learn about fellow students’ cultures. I have looked at the diversity stats and am excited about the high population of international students, but I want to have more information. Is it easy to have cross-cultural experiences both in and outside of the classroom? Similar to civic engagement, is it easy to be involved in social justice on campus?

I also wanted to know what the access to financial aid looks like because there is no merit aid, and I will not quality for much need-based aid based on the CSS and FAFSA.

Study Abroad Study Abroad Advice : Madrid

I just finished my sophomore year and I'm currently scheduled to attend UC3M in Madrid next spring.

I have some reservations about the program as I have to take an econ elective in Spanish and I am worried that it will impact my GPA too much. If there's anybody on this sub who has attended that program as an econ major, could I hear about your experience and how difficult it was? I would also like to hear about any potential "easier" Spanish econ electives as I really do want to protect my GPA.

I also have some questions regarding housing and which option is the most affordable.

If anyone has any advice, please lmk!!

Campus/town Incoming first-year, should I bring a bike?

  • Is campus walkable enough that a bike is overkill, or does it actually save you real time getting to far classes/practice/town?
  • How bad is the theft situation? Heard it's a thing. Worth bringing something decent or just get a beater?
  • Does anyone actually ride once the snow hits, or does it just rot in storage all winter?
  • Worth waiting for the campus Bike Shop sale in the fall instead of bringing my own?

discussion/other can I borrow your guitar

I’m coming to the Vermont campus for a summer language program but unfortunately cannot bring my guitar along due to baggage allowances

This is unfortunate because i need a guitar. As much as a human can I guess.

I noticed Middlebury doesn’t have many public forums or buy/sell groups like my college does apart from this so if you’re still on campus and have an acoustic you are trying to get rid off pls hmu

I would not mind borrowing or buying.

On another note, I could use a tennis racket too.

discussion/other Is Middlebury lonely?

I am an out-of-stater applying to Midd in August. I recently visited the campus and while it seemed like there was a lot to do on campus, the idea of being in such an isolated place kinda scares me. Is it easy to make close friends? Have any students there felt super lonely or isolated? What is student life like?

Admissions Query regarding transfer at Middlebury College as an international applicant

Should I apply to Middlebury. Because I do not have a extraordinary background education background, trying to give all I have. Want to Apply as a Transfer student ,Degree in progress: BBA in Banking & Insurance (current GPA: 8.9)on a scale of 10

High school: little weak

Non-STEM background originally, now building some math skills for quantitative economics as i am fond to it and found this is what I want to study.

Extracurriculars: Got 3rd position for negotiation in an Investment banking even, volunteered for an NGO for 6 months focusing on ground level policy implementation, doing a internship in a credit firm, designer a sustainable product kit for my club.

I want to be a economics major at Middlebury. Also want to apply as a transfer student. Is it worth a short for me because I have heard that Middlebury only takes high academically gifted or highly intelligent students, and also people with exceptional ECs. I do not have any of it. I want to apply as I think its a great fit for me as i like how they perceive education unlike in India it is very rigid also need aid as can't afford tuition. should I apply now or avoid it completely.

internships/job-placement Berkeley -> Middlebury transfer? // Middlebury for Investment Banking

I'm currently a freshman at UC Berkeley but considering applying to Middleburry for transfer this fall. My main reasons for wanting to transfer are:

  1. Lack of individual agency and balance, there is such an emphasis on following the status quo.

  2. I have a lot of friends that but this school feels like a rat race where people have no standards. We're known for our placements in tech/consulting/finance but the truth is 70% of people going for big tech roles cheat their way through, and almost everyone interesting in consulting/finance are social climbers that would do anything to break in (ironic that I am also aiming for this field).

  3. I don't want to be in California/the Bay Area long term; I've been here my entire life and I liked NYC & Boston a lot more when I've visited in the past.

That being said, I need to place into a career that makes 100k+ off the bat as my family has been below the poverty line most years of my life, and my parents have significant debt.

I've heard that Middlebury has really good results for placement into investment banking (per capita), but my natural inclination is that LAC have more wealthy families and that may play more of a role. Could anyone here speak to the Middlebury IB pipeline?

Would greatly appreciate opinions on any of the things I mentioned!

housing freshmen housing

Hey everyone, I have a question for current students about the possibility of getting a single dorm as a freshman at Middlebury (as an undergraduate). I have a mental health condition (or at least symptoms which is the main issue) but it's undocumented because it's not possible to get a proper examination in my country. I would request a single dorm but after reading their website, I think I need to have medical documentation to request special accommodation for disability. So how hard is it go get a single if you can't suport your request with medical information?
