1 year into MicroStrategy... and my project is already migrating to Power BI

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for some honest career advice from people who have been working with MicroStrategy for a while.

I'm from India and have around 3.5 years of total IT experience. Most of my earlier experience was in a technical support role. About a year ago, I got an opportunity to move into a MicroStrategy Developer role, and I was really happy because I finally got to work on a proper BI platform.

After working with MicroStrategy for a year, I can honestly say it's a very powerful and feature-rich tool. But it's also incredibly vast. Even after a year, I still feel like a beginner because there's always something new to learn.

Unfortunately, my current project has decided to migrate from MicroStrategy to Power BI, and because of that, our company is laying off the MicroStrategy team.

Now that I'm searching for jobs, I've realized something I wasn't expecting: the MicroStrategy job market seems very small, especially for someone with only one year of experience. Most openings ask for several years of experience, and there just aren't many junior-level opportunities.

I don't want to go back to technical support, but I also don't feel experienced enough to compete with senior MicroStrategy developers.

I'm considering applying for Strategy's August internship program, hoping to get selected for a Cloud Support Engineer role. At the same time, I'm wondering if I should switch my career toward AWS or Azure. My concern is that although I have 3.5 years of experience overall, I have almost no hands-on cloud experience. Getting certifications is one thing, but clearing interviews without real project experience feels difficult.

So I'd really appreciate your advice:

  • Should I continue investing in MicroStrategy?
  • Should I pivot to Power BI or another BI tool?
  • Or should I focus on cloud (AWS/Azure) instead?
  • Are there any companies that still hire junior MicroStrategy developers?

And if anyone knows of any junior-level MicroStrategy openings, I'd be grateful if you could let me know.

Thanks in advance. I genuinely appreciate any guidance from people who've been in this situation.

Mapping SCF's

Anyone mapping SCF's in a dashboard?

SCF's (Sectional Center Facility) are the first three digits of the United States ZIP code. This would be useful for grouping customers and looking at major shipping routes, etc.

Update #1: I found an SCF shp file (and the associated cpg, dbf, prj, shx) and converted them to kml. Imported the kml into the dashboard joined the SCF from this dataset to the dataset with the sales info. Added SCF to the map, but when I go to the Options for the map to set the Boundaries to fill in...SCF isn't an option in the dropdown.

Reference a Prompted Value Inside a Custom Filter

Goal: User selects a single element of "Quarter" (this is a quarter year of time). The report is then filtered to show activity from that quarter AND the previous 3 quarters, e.g., if the user selects 20261, then the report would show activity from 20252 through 20261.

I thought that in the past I was able to drag the prompt into a filter, but I must be missing something now or not remembering correctly. 😞

I have SQL code all set that will calculate the beginning quarter based off of the prompted value, but I can't see how to get that prompted value into the code. I'm hoping to avoid using a completely free form SQL report methodology.

Anyone here a current employee of microstrategy— (now strategy)?

My friend who is interested in applying had an HR question she wanted to ask but preferred not to in the beginning stages of the interview process— was hoping to get some additional insight from someone who currently works there or recently did.

It’s a question about maternity/paternity leave benefits and requirements.

Thanks!!

Microstrategy Upgrade issue

I am attempting to upgrade MicroStrategy from version 11.4 to 11.5. The current 11.4 environment is fully functional and stable, including access to the metadata repository. However, during the upgrade to 11.5, the installer fails with an error indicating that it cannot establish a connection to the metadata database.

Current Environment
MicroStrategy Version: 11.4.09
- Operating System: Linux
- Metadata Database: External MySQL (not default MicroStrategy DB)
- ODBC Driver: MySQL ODBC 8.0 Unicode
- Connectivity: Working correctly in the existing 11.4 environment

Is mstr still a player in BI?

I am currently using the MSTR as a BI tool to do the reporting but is it still there in the market? Or they have shifted the entire focus on to bitcon now.

Are there any big companies using the tool or is it outdated . Largely companies are using Power BI and tableau tool for the reporting. But should i shift from MSTR to relevant tool in market or it is still having that potential?

Can you help me listing big companies using mstr?

Microstrategy Developer Error

Job: 88

Status: Execution failed

Error:

SQLEngine got an Exception from DFC. [DFCENGINE] Engine Logic: Fact does not exist at a level that can support the requested analysis. Fact: "abcd". Level: "X, Y, Z, W, M". Error in Process method of Component: SQLEngineServer, Project: Office, Job 88. Error Code: -2147212800.
The abcd only has 2 tables, and it is throwing an error only if I add one particular attribute and metric alone, but apart from that all other attributes are running with that particular metric

Can't determine if Org still has perpetual license

We are trying to spin up on apparently a long run but license issue with our on prem MS install. For various reasons our org has not wanted to switch to MS one from a legacy set of unlimited on prem licenses and come renewal time are facing over 30% escalation. Our resller isn't being very helpful and warning is dire consequences and renewal fees. The odd thing is our license documentation shows a bunch of perpetual licenses although the actual keys we have are term. Has anyone run into this before? This on prem install is over 10 years old with a large unlimited user base...is it possible we still have perpetual licenses which could buy us time to look at options?

How to get MicroStrategy certification without corporate email?

Hello everyone,

I'm planning to learn MicroStrategy (now Strategy) and pursue the Developer Certification (DVL). However, I've hit a roadblock. The registration requires a business/corporate email address and won't accept personal emails like Gmail. As an individual learner (not currently employed by a company using MicroStrategy), I only have personal email addresses.

My questions:

  1. Has anyone successfully registered as an individual learner? How did you do it?

  2. Are there workarounds for the business email requirement?

  3. Are there alternative paths to official MicroStrategy certification for individuals?

Any guidance or experiences would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Is there a way to create a text grid?

Hi, everyone.

This might sound like a silly question, but I'm trying to create a grid with something like:

Rows: user ID Columns: Role Values (cells): string with comma separated values of a list of stuff.

When split by user id and role, I will end up with only 1 possible value per cell within the grid.

The problem is that grids only accept metrics, and metrics have to be numeric, or do something with the Max(attribute){~} or something like that.

The Max function works, but if I want to apply conditional formatting it won't work properly with anything beyond isnull or isnotnull because it won't work with "contains" or "matches" due to metrics being considered numeric.

Has anyone found a way to do something like this? I've mostly been using Shiny but now I have to use MicroStrategy and I'm a bit lost.

Thanks I'm advance.

Grid Lines on Combo Chart

I have a combo chart (bar chart for one metric and then a line chart showing the running percent of total). I have the bar chart metric using the left axis and the running percent of total using the right axis. Whenever I try to modify the grid lines settings, the grid lines align with the right axis only. How can I get the grid lines to be for the left axis (bar chart)?

Example: in the image, I want the horizontal grid lines to align with the left vertical axis tick marks.

How can I prepare for microstrategy scenario based questions in interview?

Looking for mstr job, I had worked on mstr little bit when was a fresher in a MNC company.

But now interviewer and recruiter's expectations are sky high. I have 2 year exp and they asked me things like have you ever created schemas objects n all. Dude how is this possible that too in a MNC company at such a junior level .

How can they give me a free hand to play with schemas objects.

And they asked all long complecated scenario based questions like " you have 3 data set , which show region n all and suddenly one is showing only 1 region of 8.... And migration question like i have not mentioned this in my resume but still they asked these.

How can I prepare for it. I can't go for certification..pls guide me and let me know if there is any channel or material which I can refer for such scnario based questions

Strategy Mosaic: is it just the same semantic layer renamed ?

Announced at World 2025. Looks like: - the semantic layer now has an object called model, that is similar to a MTDI but extended - AI is helping to create this model object - it can be exposed to external tools via API but also a SQL interface

But it is not backward compatible with the traditional MSTR model?

Microstrategy Orange

Microstrategy (Strategy) announced an upcoming identity security product suite called Microstrategy Orange last year.

https://bitcoinmagazine.com/business/microstrategy-announces-decentralized-id-platform-on-bitcoin-called-microstrategy-orange

Since then, I haven't been able to find any news about it. Has it been cancelled?

Does Strategy have any plans to provide an update about it? Perhaps at their upcoming conference? https://www.strategysoftware.com/world25
