New Office version coming out soon?

I’ve had 365 for almost a year and hate it, so I signed out of it months ago and use only the desktop apps. I don’t want to renew 365 (which expires next week), so was going to buy Office 2024. Then I wondered if a new version was coming out soon. I’ve only found vague references about Office 2026 online. Has anyone heard anything about it? I’d like to get as much life out of what I’m going to buy as possible. Before 365, I had Office 2011 on my iMac. The computer was in storage for years and I only used an iPad (long story - lots of chaos in my life!). I now have a MacMini and use Office on a regular basis. Do I suck it up and subscribe for another year and then buy the newest version when it comes out? Help!

Active MS Off 2021 Pro Plus MAK license

hi ... I inherited the IT support for a small 6 desktop computer office for an apartment building admin team ... from Belarc Advisor I got the full 20-digit license keys for all 6 computers for MS Off 2021 Prof PLus ... all license keys starting with 00469 indicating MAK licenses ... Belarc also reports that 3 license are activated, showing me the last 5 of the 25 digit of their MAK Product Key ... for the other 3 (computers which were not used for a while), it reports "not activated" ... I don't have any paperwork, emails or other info ... I have been asked to activate the remaining 3 ... I am familiar with the ospp.vbs script to activate but this requires knowing the 25 digits which I currently don't ... I read about accessing admin.microsoft.com but nobody knows what the building corporation's email address is ... elsewhere I read that this is not usable for MSO2021 licenses but only for O365 ... I also read about contacting the local MS helpdesk with a list of requirements (original proof of purchase, admin accounts, etc. which nobody from the admin team is able to provide)

What other options do I have to activate the 3 MSO licenses? I read that I really need the MAK keys, so are there ways to get these?

Office on Mac stopped working after a year

Last night when I tried to save an excel doc, a message came up saying that I won't be able to save the changes. And at the top, I noticed

Activate Microsoft 365 to Create and Edit

When i clicked on

"Activate" as one reddit user suggested

then on "Already bought Office? Sign in"

"enter the email account"

Goes to "Activating"

then I get

I get "Unknown Error.  An unknown error has occurred.  The error code is:0x0"

"Unable to activate Microsoft 365"

When i check "About Excel”..I see

"Microsoft Excel for Mac

Version 16.78

License: Not Activated

Belongs to: my email address

Device ID:xxxxxxxx

2023 Microsoft"

Does anyone know what is happening?

How to make PDF document into word?

I'm going to the free Microsoft word document and clicking 'add file' but it will only show word documents, instead of the PDF file I've saved 3 times.

I've also tried going to 'my files' and clicking 'open as' then choosing word document but it goes to a screen where it asks me to choose the 'file conversion' then it proceeds to put it all in coded text.

Outlook (Office 2021 Pro) keeps putting its icon back on the quicklaunch bar - how to stop it?

This is starting to bug me now... I've removed the icon repeatedly and done a couple of supposed 'fixes' that the internet told me. Every few days, Outlook adds its icon back to the quicklaunch bar. I don't want it there (because it messes up my toolbar layout), I have the toolbars locked, I've deleted it manually from the %AppData%\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch folder. It still keeps coming back randomly.

Any idea how to kill it?

It started doing this after I had to do a full reinstall of the PC a month ago. Never done it before but I didn't do anything differently on the install.

EXPERIMENT: An attempt to preserve Microsoft Publisher Final Version

Microsoft is discontinuing Publisher, and I wanted to preserve a working installation of the final version and may have an idea on how to do it rather than depend on reinstalling and activating an older unpatched version.

My approach is to create a fully configured Windows virtual machine and then make its virtual hard drive immutable in VirtualBox.

An immutable VirtualBox disk is not modified directly. Changes made while the VM is running are written to a temporary differencing image. When the VM is completely powered off and started again, those changes are discarded and the machine returns to its preserved state.

This is similar to using a Live DVD, except the preserved environment remains a normal Windows virtual machine.

What you need

Oracle VirtualBox

A legitimate Windows installation and license

A legitimate Microsoft Publisher or Microsoft Office installation

The installers, license information, and activation information you are legally entitled to preserve

Enough storage for multiple backup copies

Step 1: Create the virtual machine

Create a normal VirtualBox VM and install Windows.

I would use a dynamically allocated VDI disk with enough space for:

Windows

Microsoft Office or Publisher

Windows updates

Printer drivers

Fonts

PDF software

Any templates or supporting tools you need

I think for my purposes, a 64–100 GB virtual disk will be plenty.

Step 2: Completely configure Windows

Before making the VM immutable:

Install all necessary Windows updates.

Install VirtualBox Guest Additions.

Install Microsoft Publisher.

Activate Windows and Office normally.

Open Publisher and confirm that it works.

Install any fonts, templates, printer drivers, or PDF tools you may need.

Disable unnecessary startup software.

Set the correct screen resolution.

Test opening and saving several Publisher files.

Restart the VM several times and confirm everything still works.

Do not make the disk immutable until the machine is exactly how you want it preserved.

Step 3: Create a clean preservation copy

Shut the VM down completely. Do not save the machine state.

Locate the VM folder and make a complete backup of it before changing anything.

The backup should include:

The .vbox configuration file

The main .vdi virtual hard drive

Any EFI or NVRAM files

The installation media

The Office or Publisher installer

License documentation

A text file describing the VM configuration

Do not rely solely on VirtualBox snapshots as your backup.

Step 4: Make the virtual disk immutable

Open Command Prompt or PowerShell on the host computer and locate the VirtualBox installation directory.

On a typical Windows installation:

C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox

List the registered virtual hard disks:

VBoxManage list hdds

Find the UUID or full filename of the Publisher VM’s main virtual disk.

Then change the disk type to immutable:

VBoxManage modifymedium disk "D:\Virtual Machines\Publisher Preservation\Publisher.vdi" --type immutable

Alternatively, use the disk UUID:

VBoxManage modifymedium disk YOUR-DISK-UUID --type immutable

VirtualBox may also expose the disk type through its Virtual Media Manager, depending on the version being used.

Step 5: Test the reset behavior

Start the VM and create an obvious test file on the Windows desktop.

For example:

DELETE-ME-TEST.txt

Now shut Windows down completely.

Do not select “Save the machine state.”

Start the VM again.

The test file should be gone, and the machine should have returned to its preserved state.

VirtualBox sends all changes to a differencing image rather than modifying the immutable base disk. The differencing image is normally reset when the VM is powered on again.

Important: Restart is not the same as power off

Restarting Windows from inside the VM does not necessarily discard the session’s changes.

The normal reset occurs when the VM is fully powered off and then started again through VirtualBox.

For consistent behavior:

Shut Windows down.

Confirm that VirtualBox shows the VM as Powered Off.

Start the VM again.

Important warning about snapshots

Snapshots and immutable disks both use differencing images, and their interaction can become confusing.

In particular, an immutable disk may not automatically reset as expected when the VM has a saved state or an online snapshot taken while the VM was running. Oracle’s documentation notes that deleting the current online snapshot may be necessary to restore automatic resetting.

For a preservation VM, I would avoid snapshots after establishing the immutable master.

How to save Publisher documents

Because the Windows disk resets, documents should not be saved permanently inside the VM.

Possible solutions include:

A VirtualBox shared folder located on the host

A second normal virtual disk used only for documents

A network share

A USB drive passed through to the VM

Saving files to the host and keeping the VM itself offline

I would probably use a shared host folder called something like:

Publisher Documents

The Publisher operating environment remains immutable, but the actual documents remain editable and backed up separately.

Network recommendation

Once Publisher is installed, activated, and tested, I would consider disabling the VM’s virtual network adapter.

That would:

Reduce exposure to malware

Prevent unwanted software updates

Prevent accidental changes caused by online services

Help keep the preserved environment stable

However, activation requirements should be tested before permanently isolating the machine. An immutable VM cannot guarantee that Microsoft’s activation systems will remain available forever.

Create multiple archival copies

After everything works, preserve more than one copy.

My planned archive would contain:

Publisher Preservation/ ├── VM/ │ ├── Publisher.vbox │ └── Publisher.vdi ├── Installers/ │ ├── Windows installation media │ ├── Office or Publisher installer │ └── VirtualBox installer ├── Documentation/ │ ├── README.txt │ ├── VM configuration.txt │ ├── license documentation │ └── recovery instructions └── Checksums/ └── SHA256SUMS.txt

I would keep copies on at least two different drives, plus one offline copy.

An exported OVA can also be useful, but I would preserve the original VM folder and VDI as the primary copy. Exporting and importing appliances can occasionally change VM settings.

Generate checksums

On current versions of Windows, SHA-256 checksums can be created with:

certutil -hashfile "Publisher.vdi" SHA256

Record the result in a text file.

Periodically recalculate the checksum to confirm that the archived disk image has not become corrupted.

What this does and does not protect against

This approach protects the preserved Windows installation from normal software changes made while using the VM.

It does not protect against:

Failure of the host storage device

Corruption of the VDI file

Loss of license information

Future activation problems

Future VirtualBox compatibility problems

Accidental deletion of the VM

Damage to files saved outside the immutable disk

That is why the immutable disk should be treated as one part of a larger preservation plan, not as the only backup.

The result should be a working Publisher environment that starts from the same known-good condition every time, while documents are stored separately on writable media.

SO, with all that said, wish me luck. I will post an update soon on how it goes.

Microsoft To Do is no longer reliably syncing

Since about 10 days Microsoft To Do longer reliably syncs between my devices (Macbook, iPhone, iPad) and also not between me and people with whom I share lists. The sync is either heavily delayed, happens only partially (missing some information) or not at all. The sync issue has already created issues as work as tasks were either not completed (because the creation of the task did not sync) or done in duplication (because the completion of the task did not sync). It is a major work interruption. No changes to the settings of the App was done. The problem just started at some point and is reproducible since then. Has anyone the same issue and found a solution or the cause of the issue?

MS Project, adding Task Milestones to GANTT

Just wanted to sum up my project plan and have a reliable high-level GANTT view, with some critical milestones. Found out, one task in Project is ONLY displayed by the "start" and "end" attribute. But I need to have more dates displayed in the GANTT, and I want to have it in one single task. At the moment, I can only archieve it by adding multiple tasks underneath.

So for example:

TaskName: MyCoolDesktopApplication
Install-Date: xxxx-xx-xx
Test-Date: xxxx-xx-xx
certify: xxxx-xx-xx
Usermigration: xxxx-xx-xx
Adjust-Citrix: xxxx-xx-xx
Communication: xxxx-xx-xx
Learning finished: xxxx-xx-xx
Support starts: xxxx-xx-xx

All this is placed in one task (per Application = One Task) and I want all these dates being marked as a milestone in the GANTT.

So how do I add these dates to GANTT?

Lost my lifetime Office Home & Student license after reinstalling Windows – how can I recover it?

I have an ASUS VivoBook X515JA laptop that came with a lifetime Microsoft Office Home & Student license (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

I was able to use all the desktop Office apps without any issues before reinstalling Windows.

After reinstalling Windows 11, Office now shows "Unlicensed Product" and only gives me a 5-day temporary pass. After that, it says I'll need to buy Microsoft 365.

Checked my Microsoft account under Services & Subscriptions, but it only shows the free web version of Microsoft 365 and not Office Home & Student.

Has anyone experienced this after reinstalling Windows? Is there any way to recover the original OEM Office Home & Student license, or do I need to contact Microsoft Support?

Can You Still Buy Microsoft Office Without a Subscription in 2026?

# Can You Still Buy Microsoft Office Without a Subscription in 2026?

Yes—you do **not** have to pay monthly for Microsoft 365 just to use Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.

Microsoft Office 2024 is available as a **one-time purchase**, which makes it a good option for people who:

✅ Only need the main Office applications
✅ Do not need 1TB of OneDrive storage
✅ Prefer working offline
✅ Use one Windows PC
✅ Want to avoid another monthly subscription

# What do you get with Office 2024 Professional Plus?

* Microsoft Word
* Microsoft Excel
* Microsoft PowerPoint
* Microsoft Outlook
* Microsoft Access
* Microsoft OneNote
* Microsoft Publisher

# What should you check before buying an Office key?

Before purchasing, make sure:

* The edition is compatible with your computer
* You are buying the correct Windows version
* The seller provides activation instructions
* Customer support is available if activation fails
* The price is clearly shown before checkout

For anyone looking for an affordable Office 2024 Professional Plus key, GGKeys currently has discounted options available:

👉 **Get Office 2024 Professional Plus**

Get it here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Office2024Deals/

For most home users, students and small businesses that only need the desktop apps, paying once may make more sense than keeping another subscription active.

Are you still using Microsoft 365, or have you switched to a one-time Office licence?

Can I get a standalone copy of publisher?

My 70 year old aunt is just devastated that her new laptop doesn’t come with publisher. She uses it for lots of crafting and projects and she is so used to it and really worried about learning something new.

She got a new laptop with office pro plus after being assured it would come with publisher. It turns out the 2021 version had publisher but 2024 does not. I am racking my brain trying to help her but can’t find any way to get it for her. Can anyone help?

Microsoft Word Question

I want to buy Microsoft Word. Just Word, nothing else. My questions:

Is better (cheaper) to buy Word standalone or purchase a subscription?

I see on the Microsoft webstore they offer two different versions of Word. One says Word for $179.99 and another says Word Home 79.99. What is the difference between these two versions and why is one more expensive than the other?

Office 2021 for Mac disabled, lifetime license now wants a newer OS...what to do?

Hello all--So this morning Microsoft decided to paralyze my lifetime license of Office 2021 for Mac. I found advice here on Reddit to uninstall/reinstall from my MS account, which mostly worked EXCEPT that the installer now insists that I have at least macOS 14 (Sonoma). Problem is, I'm working on my beloved 2017 iMac that maxes out at 13 (Ventura), on which I am actually running 12 (Monterey).

Here's my question: If I just buy a whole new lifetime license for Office 2021, is it still going to insist on OS14 or newer when I try to install it? Can I get an "old" license that won't care about which versions of macOS are currently supported, or is everything automatically updated in that regard?

I reeeeeaaallly don't want to have to buy a new computer--I love my 27" screen so much! Please, someone, give me some hope!

UPDATE: Thanks to all for your suggestions/comments! I'm in the middle of a large project right now and thus loath to do any major tinkering with my OS, but found that I can do what I need to with Pages (a bit crude) or LibreOffice (impressively loaded and not wildly different in terms of interface!). So I'll probably have a bash with OCLP once I'm out of the woods, *if* I think I still need the Microsoft apps by then...But LibreOffice is rapidly winning me over.
