It has been a couple years since I’ve been to Manhattan. Is it me or have the prices for even simply handcrafted, coffee food, etc. absolutely gone insane????

My wife and I travel all over and I am just shocked at how expensive Manhattan has gotten. Can anyone give us some insight?

Just curious. I think I would, but interested in hearing what other people say.

I’m from Brooklyn and moved to Manhattan last year. I love living on the island so much and I never wanna live in another borough. I obviously can’t do every single neighborhood but here’s my early draft of a tier list, with some assorted thoughts below. Curious to hear everyone’s thoughts.

S-Tier: Upper West Side, Inwood, East Village

A-Tier: West Harlem, Union Square, Greenwich Village

B-Tier: Chinatown, Hell’s Kitchen, Lower East Side, West Village

C-Tier: Meatpacking district, Upper East Side, Washington Heights

D-Tier: East Harlem, Soho, Chelsea

F-Tier: Gramercy/Murray Hill, Tribeca, Midtown/Times Square

1. The West Side as a whole is so much better than the East. The UWS is upscale but still has a lot of genuine NYC charm. Beautiful architecture, great bars, transit, and you’re right by Riverside. The UES, by comparison, is too sterile and lacks character. It’s pretty but not much there. The irony is that you could argue the UES is more affordable for normies because of Yorkville. My ex also lives in the UES so the connotations make it weird for me but I digress. 
2. Inwood is an incredible part of town with the parks in New York imo. Great bars, food and the area is full of life. Some parts are sketchy but whatever idc it's a fun part of town and all the Dominicans riding their UTVs blasting reggaeton at 2am makes it even better. Inwood Hill Park is so underrated and the Met Cloisters are right there too. The only real issue is that it's super far from a lot of shit.
3. East Village is superior to the West Village in every way. I only recently learned the distinction between Greenwich and the West Village, and I much prefer Greenwich because of MacDougal St and Washington Square Park. 
4. I view the Meatpacking District and Soho as similarly shitty in that it’s mostly just shopping, but at least the Meatpacking has the waterfront and the highline. 
5. I HATE TRIBECA so much. I have to go for work sometimes and the bars are all terrible, there really isn’t a particularly nice park (Battery Park is fine) and it’s just bland and boring. Gramercy and Murray hill suck too but a lot of that is me hating the finance bros that live there.

Has anyone recently seen a poster of a severed cut open leg in the middle of Manhattan recently? It’s popping up everywhere around skirball center and parts near it, was wondering if anyone here has seen it and know what is it for, or is it just some guy trolling citizens with it.

I live in a prewar building and One of the doors has a lock that used to work; I have a feeling that the tumblers inside the lock have dropped or moved. The key no longer engages, and the door cannot be opened.

Anyone knows of where I could have the lock fixed or a new key made?

I was at Times Square and I noticed that a group of plain clothes officers were going around stopping people ( seemingly tourists ) and giving them violations / tickets for basically no reason?

Like they weren't drinking, vaping, I have no idea what they were being stopped for but they were asking for id and giving people violations for like seemingly no reason

Hey everyone, I’m a fellow Harlemite when I came across this devastated mother & daughter(daughter is u/StarMarieeee). So I'm posting on their behalf. Their beloved dog, Lady, was stolen on Monday, July 6, around noon.

Where: The train station on 125th Street in Harlem, NY (4/5/6)

​When: Monday, July 6, 2026, at around 12:00 PM (noon).

​What Happened: The owner's mom was bringing Lady home from a haircut. While carrying the stroller up the stairs, a cup fell. When she went to retrieve it, someone grabbed Lady directly from her stroller and ran off.

​Suspect Description: An African American homeless man wearing a green sweater and beige shorts, with no shoes.

​A police report has already been filed, and the family is actively searching train stations, but they desperately need more eyes on the street. Lady provides immense emotional support for the mother, and they are completely heartbroken.

If you live, work, or commute around 125th Street, or anywhere in NYC (she could be anywhere), please keep an eye out for Lady or anyone matching the suspect's description.

Hey everyone. I'm in a really rough spot right now and could use some advice.

I'm currently homeless, living in a shelter and my HP Victus laptop is one of the only valuable things I have. A few days ago, I bought a bottle of shampoo, put it in my backpack, and due to a faulty cap, it leaked everywhere overnight. My backpack was soaked, including where my laptop was. The laptop didn't seem completely drenched, so I cleaned everything up and hoped it was okay.

Today I tried turning it on and it's completely dead. No lights, no fan, no charging indicator, nothing.

I have very little money, so I'm looking for any place in NYC that can either:

- Do a free or very cheap diagnosis.

- Repair liquid-damaged laptops for as little as possible.

- Or if anyone knows an individual or hobbyist who does board-level/laptop repair for cheap.

I'm in Harlem but I'm willing to travel anywhere within a few hundred miles if it means I have a better chance of getting it fixed. I really need it for my HRA, among other things, so I just want my laptop working again if it's possible.

If anyone has recommendations for trustworthy repair shops, volunteers, nonprofits, or people who repair laptops on the side, I'd really appreciate it.
