RANT Homeless people keep shitting in our complex’s garage and land lord still won’t get an auto gate

Our garage has a lift gate that each tennant has a clicker for. At least once a week, someone fails to close the gate and a homeless person wanders into the garage and either a) takes a dump, b) steals someone’s belongings, and/or c) breaks into a car so they can sleep there.

The obvious solution would be to get an auto gate with a sensor. But landlord won’t do this because “it’s $5 grand”. Ok and? Your have 7 apartments, each paying you $2500 a month. That’s a quarter of what you make in a month. Get the fucking gate, and stop expecting us peasants to pay for property damage and clean up literal feces. To make matters worse, every time you reach out to him regarding this nonsense it’s radio silence.

I almost jumped out of my skin when I, a 26 year old woman, almost stepped on an unknown man while exiting my car at 1 in the morning.

I am so sick of this shit - literally.

Community Reporter Part 2!

Hello everyone! My name is Chris.

I made a post here a while back introducing myself, and while I got a few great responses, I realized I could have done a much better job explaining who I am and the kinds of stories I cover.

I graduated from CSULB a year ago, and since then I've been working to build a career in journalism. With the job market being what it is, freelance work has been the best way for me to keep reporting and gain experience.

I’m an arts and life reporter, focusing on the people, businesses and creative side of Long Beach. Some of the stories I’ve covered include a Cambodian Festival, a local record store reopening and, most recently, the Long Beach Underground Film Festival. (I’m not really a hard news reporter.) Those are the types of stories I enjoy telling, and I’m hoping to continue covering more of around Long Beach.

Again, just to clarify, I’m a freelance journalist, not a staff reporter at any of these outlets, but my work has been featured in the Long Beach Post, republished by LAist and I’ve also contributed to the Sporting Tribune.

So, if you know about an interesting person, a local event, a new business, a community project or anything else around Long Beach that you think deserves a little more attention, I'd genuinely love to hear about it. Not every tip becomes a story, but I still want to hear from the community about what’s happening in Long Beach’s arts and life scene. If there’s something you think deserves attention, feel free to reach out at [email protected]. I’ll be checking through any tips I receive and appreciate anyone who takes the time to share an idea.

Discussion Secure enough to leave metal gate-door locked but wooden door open?

Upvotes

With the temps rising, my apartment experiences the oven effect. I have two cats that I’m concerned for. I have two front doors to my unit; a metal security gate and a wooden door, both with two standard locks each. So do you think it would be safe enough to leave both locks locked on the metal security gate as the only layer of protection so I can leave the wooden door ajar for air flow? Seems fine and quiet when I do this while at home at night. Concerned if this is safe when I’m gone at work.

A few things to consider: -I work nights, leave by 6-ish pm, but it’s still warm inside

-I run my portable ac to keep my bedroom cool for them, then all windows and doors are locked before leaving to work. Leaving only my small bathroom window slightly open.

-Tile and fake wood floors. Stays cool under my bed. Base/foundation of apartment is raised with a crawl space underneath. Street-level complex, 6 units total

-Cats have a basal temp of 101*, they are accustomed to heat, but that doesn’t mean I want them to be uncomfortable or even mildly suffering.

-Area is Rose Park, between 7th and 10th

-Apartment faces shared patio, not facing street. Also we have a gate to enter the complex itself

-No issues with neighbors

Any thoughts on the matter are welcomed, just been mulling it over as it gets warmer this summer.

Thanks

Food Fat Tomato Pizza on Broadway

Is it going downhill or are my last two experiences flukes?

A couple weeks ago my wife ordered us pizza. Ten minutes before delivery time they cancelled the order. No explanation. Your stomach is growling, the pizza is almost here and then, nope, sorry chumps!

Last night I ordered myself a pizza. It showed up but I swear to God they had put no red sauce on it at all. It was weird. And the basil I'd asked for was not to be found. It didn't taste awesome obviously.

Today I went to Ralph's and got marinara and more cheese to put on the leftover half pizza before heating it up. But it still didn't taste awesome. This place has been my go to for years but now I'm wondering if I need to move on.

Events Long Beach soccer players, would you join a tournament where you represent your country?

Hi everyone,
I have seen people here asking about local soccer leagues and ways to get back into playing, so I wanted to share something we are building and get honest feedback from the Long Beach community.

It is called Fans World Cup.

The idea is to organize an 11v11 soccer tournament in Southern California where everyday players form teams and represent their countries.

The message behind it is bridging borders with soccer AKA the beautiful game.

We want it to be competitive, but we also want it to help people meet other players, connect with their communities, and play for something that feels more personal than a normal team name.

This is still in the early stages. It is not currently a weekly Long Beach league, and we are still collecting interest before finalizing teams and locations.

Early signups will help us understand which countries have enough players and whether areas like Long Beach should be prioritized as the tournament develops.

You can learn more and show interest at FansWorldCup.com.

Would you consider joining something like this?
Which country would you represent?
What information would you need before deciding whether to participate?

Any honest feedback is appreciated. We want to understand whether this is something local players would genuinely care about before we take it further.

Questions Long shot: does anyone have dashcam footage of the accident that happened on Ocean & Elm on Monday July 20th?

We were driving on ocean and some dude suddenly turned left from the middle lane (we were driving next to him same speed in the lane left) trying to make it onto Elm and they hit the side of our car.

Does anyone happen to be near this accident and has dashcam footage? I would appreciate it!

Questions Seeking dashcam footage — 405 North near Palo Verde Ave / San Gabriel River, Tuesday 7/21 ~6:05 PM

On Tuesday, July 21 around 6:05 PM, I was driving northbound on the 405, close to the San Gabriel River crossing and about half a mile before the Palo Verde Ave exit, when a large truck tire came across the lanes and struck my car (a white Porsche Macan) broadside. The tire kept rolling and continued down the freeway afterward.

Traffic was heavy, so many drivers likely saw it or caught it on dashcam — especially anyone who saw where the tire came from or the vehicle that lost it.

If you saw it happen, have it on dashcam, know where the tire ended up, called 911 about it, or can confirm it with the police, please reach out via DM. Also, if you know of another incident nearby around that time that might be related — a truck losing a tire, another car hit, debris reported — please let me know. Even a partial detail would help enormously. Thank you.

Food Local LB Espresso Bean Roaster?

My wife recently bought an espresso machine. Her birthday is tomorrow and thought I should buy her a bag of high quality beans. Obviously I could go to Starbucks or Coffee Bean. Just curious if there are any local roasters that you guys have tried and liked.

I think that makes a better gift than a popular name brand.

Thanks

Food Breakfast on Monday for large group Recs

hi!

my 40th birthday is coming up and a group of us are going on a cruise! we dock back monday morning, and, as that’s my actual birthday, I thought it would be nice to treat whomever is still down to keep going, to breakfast- as a thank you for coming on the trip.

soooooo any good recs that are open on a monday, hopefully take a reservation, and open to about 20-30 people?

ideally the would serve booze. but since it’s not a traditional brunch i know that may be rare; so totally open to somewhere more mom and pop / diner-y, if the food is good and the vibes are right!

only restriction is that it be in long beach- the closer to the harbor the better. i’m trying to make it as easy for everyone as possible. i don’t want to ask them to drive too far out of the way.

thank you!!!

Housing Landlord is selling our Apt Complex

I’ve been in the process of building my credit back up bc as we know, it’s hard to even be considered for a place to live when your score is bad (i’ve been so rudely turned away and spoken down to) so I was very fortunate to find my current spot, the landlords being husband and wife who also lived in the complex, very warm and intentional vibes. They were willing to look past my bad credit and just asked for double the deposit (pretty standard IMO) as they saw I had the income to sustain what they were asking for. Well, I JUST marked my first year living here and came home to signs in all our doors that Ernst & Haas Management will be taking over. i’m bummed to say the least… concerned about how things may change. i’m currently on a month to month and have plans to move in December, but still…

So if anyone currently lives in properties managed by them, I would love to hear your experiences.

thanks in advance!

For Sale/Free Anyone in need of a 3 piece sectional and a queen bed frame with box springs and mattress? Must pick up. Free for someone in need OR $20 for either the bed set or couch.

As the title states. Bought a storage unit. It came with a couch and queen bed set. I have a 3 piece sectional that is brown and a queen bed set. On the head board, there is a small corner that got damaged if the piece didn't break off, it can be glued. I suggest cleaning prior to using. Its free to someone who is in need or if you just wanna give me something, ill take $20 for either the sectional or the bed set.

Questions Compounding Pharmacy Recommendations

I've found some posts in here about pharmacy recommendations, but am looking for recommendations for a compounding pharmacy that is specifically good at the compounding part.

(I've been prescribed something that needs to be compounded, and have enough weird allergies that I need to be able to ask them to be careful about which fillers they use and trust that they will actually follow that.)

Does anyone have a pharmacy/pharmacist that they would recommend? (Or warnings of where not to go?)

For Sale/Free Anyone want a monstera?

I have a big 4ft x 4ft monstera that needs a new home! Dm me

I have a toddler and he keeps getting into it, otherwise I'd keep her. She's healthy with new growth. I have it attached to a trellis, but you could easily attach it to something else.

I put her in the side yard temporarily today and she got a bit burned. I've never had that happen before, but I'm sure you can just clip off those fronds

DM me if interested! We can meet up somewhere

EDIT: Thanks for all the replies! The first person who dm'd me followed through and picked her up this morning. Can I just say how much I love this community? Posting on FB marketplace would've been a bombardment of wishy washy dm's with no one actually committing. I'm so glad this plant has a happy new home, and I'm so glad to be in a city with so many plant nerds as enthusiastic as me hah...I got SO many dm's it was hard to keep up!

As for the pup, he's baking in the sun right now in baked potato mode 🐶 he ain't going anywhere!

News Homelessness rises in Long Beach for second year in a row

Thumbnail

Despite hundreds of millions of dollars spent to curb homelessness, the number of people without a home in Long Beach rose for the second year in a row — with a larger spike for people who are “chronically homeless” and typically most difficult to keep in permanent housing, officials announced Monday.

It’s a reversal of fortune for a city that two years ago declared it had “turned the tide” on homelessness. Since then, Long Beach has seen at least 10% more people living on the streets, and homelessness has increased in six of the last seven years — even with successes in expanding its shelter system and moving people into permanent housing.
