Advice Swapping from Windows 11 to Linux

Upvotes

With everything thats been going on with Windows I think i feel comfortable enough giving Linux a try. I wanted to know what's the easiest / UI friendly version of Linux that can help me transition?

I primarily use my system to game, using NVIDIA graphics card + a quest 3 VR headset (not sure if that matters). I also had a couple of other questions about people who made the same jump:

  1. what are some things you notice that you "miss" or dont have in Linux that you did in Windows?

  2. Have you had any issues with gaming on a Linux system? issues with compatability, performance, or games not available on Linux?

  3. What do you like the most / notice the most about going from Windows to Linux system?

  4. How are the security features / any other things to download on top for security? Windows has windows defender built in so what would Linux use?

  5. Any other general advice, suggested addon / softwares, thoughts or what not about the transition?

Support Need help wiping multiple computer drives.

Hello everyone. I have been running Fedora with the cachyos kernel on my main laptop happily for the last 6 months or so. I have an old laptop I want to put Arch on to mess around. My issue is that the laptop more than likely has a virus on it so I want to wipe the whole thing. The laptop has an SSD and an HDD. Is there a way to wipe both drives at the same time? I only see the option to do one drive at a time. I am worried that if there is a virus on there it will transfer between the drives while one is being wiped. Should I just take out the HDD and wipe them separately or is my concern not even really valid?

Additionally I have an external SSD in an enclosure, the plugged in the computer recognizes it as the enclosure and not the drive so the WD software doesn't recognize it to be able to use that to clean that drive. Is the best option just to use windows diskpart and hit `clean all`? Any help would be appreciated thanks!:)

OS Switch Help

So to keep it simple, I have no clue about anything Linux or Linux related so this is all really daunting. I am currently on Windows 10 and need to switch to Linux, since I don't want evil ass bloatware that slows my entire system down. All I want is something that is good for gaming while looking similar to Windows, since my PC is mostly used for gaming. Thank you in advance.

Advice School forbids linux laptops

Hey, idk if this is the right place to ask this, but I have a bit of a dilemma.

I have been using linux exclusively on my main PC and on my laptop for a while now. That said, I am moving to a new school, and buried in their rules they say that "Chromebooks (or other Linux machines) cannot be used." They also want us to use their office 365 license, but do not require it.

Now, besides just being incredibly annoying, I cannot use windows/mac on my laptop because it's a 2011 macbook, so it cannot run anything but lightweight linux distros without combusting, and I would like to avoid spending 500+ euro on a new crappy windows laptop.

Is there any reason, besides saving myself some trouble, to not just use my laptop as is (currently on arch, gonna switch it to cachyos) and something like libreoffice that I don't see or can I just ignore this and hope for the best?

Which Distro? Need help choosing the best Linux distro for my old Toshiba laptop

*I have an old Toshiba Satellite (C550 series) with the following specs:

CPU: Intel Celeron @ 1.80 GHz RAM: 6 GB DDR3 Storage: 320 GB HDD (planning to upgrade to a 256 GB SSD soon) GPU: Intel integrated graphics Wi-Fi: 2.4 GHz only Battery: Lasts around 30 minutes (mostly used plugged in) Current OS: Windows 10*

I'm looking for a Linux distro that's lightweight, stable, beginner-friendly, and gives the best performance on this hardware. I don't mind a minimal UI if it improves responsiveness.

Which distro would you recommend and why? (Lubuntu, Linux Mint XFCE, Xubuntu, MX Linux, Debian XFCE, Fedora LXQt, etc.)

OLED screen on Linux, are there any risks or solutions?

Hi guys, I recently replaced my trusty 10 year old ASUS k501u😢 with an ASUS VivoBook S14 with an OLED screen

After I got it, though, I started thinking about the risks associated with OLED screens, specifically burn-in. Since I spend many hours coding, the risk of having vscode icons permanently burned into the screen is very high over time (i think). That’s why I wanted to ask you if, on Linux (I use Linux Mint), there are solutions like pixel shifting, pixel refreshing, anti-flicker etc... what solutions does Linux offer? Or what software solutions are available?

Advice Backup + sync

Hi all,

I'm relatively new to Linux still. Currently using Zorin OS as this seemed relatively user friendly, and so far I'm having a really good time. I have turned on my Windows PC exactly once in 3 months so I'm slowly starting to get the hang of things. Admittedly, I am converted for the most part.

I have an older Synology NAS, and I'd like to periodically (at a certain time every day or week maybe) sync my music folder to my NAS. I'd also like to make it so that there is a change from the NAS side to that folder, that it reflects in that folder on my Linux machine. Does anyone know if this is in any way possible without using Docker (NAS too old rip) and if there are any security concerns I need to keep in mind?

Side note: I'd also really appreciate any general tips you may have, since I feel like I'm learning to walk all over again. It's tough! It can be in the form of stuff you recommend trying out to learn while doing (I have a separate one for testing so all good if it bricks) to keep it fun and engaging? Anything you'd encourage me to break and (maybe) try to fix?

Thanks so much in advance!

After Effects UI shows only square boxes instead of text on CachyOS

Hi. I'm using Aegnux on CachyOS with the bundled Wine runner. Everything in Adobe After Effects launches, but almost the entire UI displays square boxes instead of text.
What I've already tried:
- Installed Microsoft Core Fonts
- Added Segoe UI fonts manually:
- segoeui.ttf
- segoeuib.ttf
- segoeuil.ttf
- seguisb.ttf
- SegMDL2.ttf
- Imported them into the Wine registry
- Verified they appear in: HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Fonts
- Ran wineboot -u
- Restarted Wine
- Checked DLL overrides (dwrite is builtin)
- Wine version: wine-11.3.r0.g0e629ceb (TkG Staging NTsync)
The fonts are correctly registered, but After Effects still shows only square boxes.
Has anyone using Aegnux experienced this?
Is there another dependency or plugin required besides the main AE package?
Thanks!

Segoe UI (TrueType)

Segoe UI Bold

Segoe UI Light

Segoe UI Semibold

Segoe MDL2 Assets

- Ran wineboot -u

Has anyone using Aegnux experienced this?

Is there another dependency or plugin required besides the main AE package?

Support Colors look washed out in CachyOS

Yesterday i installed CachyOS as a dual-boot. Everything seems to be working, but i have noticed one issue, the colors on my display look washed out.

This is especially noticeable in the browser. Areas that should appear black look grayish, and blue tones seem dull and less vibrant than they should be. It feels like the overall color output is faded.

Has anyone knows how to fix it?

Advice Linux Mint won't boot after moving installation from HDD to SSD (UUID / boot issue)

Hi everyone,

I'm having a boot problem with Linux Mint and I hope someone can help me understand what went wrong.

My laptop has 4 GB of RAM, and Windows was very slow, so I decided to install Linux Mint.

I didn't have a USB flash drive, so I used a tool that allowed me to boot the Linux Mint ISO from a partition on my internal drive. The installation completed successfully, and Linux Mint booted and worked normally.

Later, I noticed that the system felt slower than expected. After checking, I found that the EFI/boot files were on my SSD, but the Linux root filesystem had actually been installed on my HDD.

I wanted everything to be on the SSD, so I copied the Linux installation from the HDD to the SSD and reinstalled/configured GRUB to boot from the SSD. I also updated the boot configuration. After that, I deleted the old Linux files from the HDD because I thought they were no longer needed.

The laptop worked for a short time, but after rebooting it no longer booted.

While troubleshooting, I realized that the original tool had left an important boot-related reference pointing to the old HDD. It contained a line like:

UUID=6b4d8b2d-1d4d-4a8b-9b7b-8d4f2d5d6c9a

I believe the system is still trying to use the old HDD UUID, but I had already deleted that installation. I also get messages indicating that the boot filesystem is read-only.

My questions are:

- Is this likely caused by an incorrect UUID reference?

- Can I repair the bootloader and UUID configuration without reinstalling Linux?

- Is there a way to recreate or fix the missing boot files?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Which Distro? Looking for a polished, modern Linux distro for my mini PC (desktop + light gaming)

Hey everyone,

I recently turned my secondary PC Blackview MP100 mini PC into a small desktop setup. The specs are:

- AMD Ryzen 7 5825U

- 32GB DDR4 RAM

- 1TB NVMe SSD + 1TB SATA SSD

- AMD integrated graphics Vega 8

- Currently running two 1440p 144Hz monitors, planning for a third 1080p display

I already have a proper Windows gaming PC, so this machine is not meant to replace that. I want something different: a cozy, modern, polished Linux experience that feels like a premium desktop environment.

My priorities:

- Easy to use day-to-day (GUI first, minimal terminal usage)

- Stable updates

- Good hardware support

- Nice-looking desktop experience

- Good Steam/Proton gaming support for lighter games (Skyrim, indie games, older AAA titles, etc.)

- Good for browsing, office work, media, and general productivity

I don't mind learning some Linux, but I don't want a situation where fixing WiFi or a driver issue means spending 8 hours in the terminal.

I was considering Linux Mint Cinnamon, but I'm curious what the community recommends. Would you go with Mint, Fedora KDE, Bazzite, or something else for this kind of "daily driver + occasional gaming" mini PC?

Thanks!

Support Laptop thermal shutting off 5 mins AFTER exiting games (CachyOS / KDE Plasma

yo guys i am running cachyos with kde plasma on my laptop and i have a really weird issue

while i am playing one game, Superliminal from steam everything works completely fine and temperatures seem normal but around 5 to 6 minutes after i close the game and leave my laptop sitting on the desktop the fans suddenly spin up to full speed for about two seconds and then the whole laptop instantly powers off like someone pulled the power cable

my guess is that this is some kind of thermal soak issue after i close the game the cpu and gpu usage drop so the fans become almost silent right away but the heatpipe is still extremely hot then that heat seems to move back into the cpu and it reaches the emergency thermal limit which causes the motherboard to instantly cut power

i never experienced this on windows so i am wondering if this is related to linux fan control or missing vendor fan drivers

so far i have installed and enabled thermald i am using power profiles daemon and i am trying to stay on the performance profile because i want maximum performance while gaming i also masked drkonqi coredump launcher because it kept crashing in the background after these hard shutdowns but it did not fix the actual problem

has anyone experienced something similar on cachyos or kde or any other linux distro is there a way to keep the fans running for a while after closing a game or stop this sudden shutdown while staying on the performance profile

any help would be really appreciated.

Support Broadcom BCM4311 on antiX 26 - Excellent signal but extremely slow downloads, packet loss, and inconsistent Wi-Fi behavior

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to troubleshoot a very frustrating Wi-Fi issue on an old Acer Extensa 4620Z running antiX 26 (Debian Trixie).

Hardware

  • Acer Extensa 4620Z
  • ~1 GB RAM
  • Broadcom BCM4311 802.11b/g (rev 01)

lspci -k reports:

Kernel driver in use: b43-pci-bridge
Kernel modules: ssb, wl

Installed Broadcom packages:

  • broadcom-sta-dkms
  • firmware-b43-installer
  • firmware-b43legacy-installer
  • b43-fwcutter
  • firmware-brcm80211

The Wi-Fi behaves very strangely:

  • Signal strength is excellent (-49 dBm, Link Quality 61/70)
  • Link speed is around 48–54 Mbps
  • Downloads are extremely slow (around 100–150 KB/s)
  • apt update frequently times out on repositories
  • Sometimes ConnMan only shows the currently connected Wi-Fi network.
  • Other times it detects all nearby networks again.
  • Earlier during troubleshooting, wlan0 disappeared completely until I unloaded/reloaded drivers.

I also tested with:

ping -c 100 192.168.1.1

Result:

100 transmitted
96 received
4% packet loss

From what I understand, there shouldn't be packet loss when pinging my own router.

Power saving is already disabled:

iw dev wlan0 get power_save
Power save: off

Things I've already tried

  • Reloading b43
  • Removing/loading wl
  • Rebooting multiple times
  • Verified firmware is installed
  • Verified the card is using b43
  • Checked DNS and routing
  • Tested download speeds with wget

My questions

  1. Is this a known issue with the BCM4311 + b43 on newer Debian/Trixie kernels?
  2. Since broadcom-sta-dkms is installed but b43 is the active driver, should I completely remove broadcom-sta-dkms?
  3. Would you recommend using the proprietary wl driver instead of b43 for this chipset?
  4. Has anyone experienced similar symptoms (excellent signal, but packet loss and extremely poor throughput)?
  5. Is there anything else I should test before concluding that the BCM4311 hardware itself is failing?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I'm trying to determine whether this is a driver issue, a kernel compatibility issue, a router compatibility issue, or simply an aging Wi-Fi card.

Thanks!
