Linux Mint 23.3/Cinnamon

I usually don't let kernel updates go through unless there's something really important... but today I was distracted, and the system installed a new Linux kernel release, 7.0.0-28.

apt upgrade showed errors compiling the VirtualBox dkms modules, and the next time I rebooted, I got a nice pink screen... kernel panic.

So I rebooted again, selected the previous kernel from the grub menu, and everything went back to normal (that's why the pink screen is better than the BSOD).
At this point, I removed the 7.0.0-28 kernel update and put it on hold to avoid any future incidents.

For those new to Linux, this might help you avoid doing too much s.e. queries.

sudo apt purge linux-image-7.0.0-28-generic linux-modules-7.0.0-28-generic linux-headers-7.0.0-28-generic

sudo update-grub

sudo apt-mark hold linux-image-7.0.0-28-generic linux-modules-7.0.0-28-generic linux-headers-7.0.0-28-generic

sudo apt clean && sudo apt autoremove

EDIT 2: Thanks for the suggestions about updating viltuabox, which may be also useful to others.
I was aware of this, but since other issues are known for this kernel version, I decided to first remove it, as it offers no benefit on my hardware.

Hi all,

I’ve been seeing a lot lately on YouTube about Mint falling behind with its updates and running older no longer support version of things.

Now I’m a basic mint users barely use the terminal and if I do it’s because I’ve searched the shit out what I’m about to enter.

So is Mint falling behind with support and would it make more sense to just run Ubuntu?

Edit: at current if 39 comments; my understanding is that a lot think Mint being behind on the 24 version of Ubuntu isn’t great but Mint is still reliable; however if the update to 26.06 in Dec 2026 is delayed, this could be cause for concern. As some are not happy with slowness of Mint’s updates but others are happy that the system is stable and has no crap that could cause issues or bugs.

I was playing on it just fine literally 12 hours ago when I went to bed and woke up I booted it up and was met with this please help

I tried installing Linux mint for the first time and it showed the Linux mint icon and the screen didn't display anything, they second time I tried it did that. (The reason I show the bitlocker recovery screen is that I got this dell latitude 7490 with a intel 7th or 8th gen i7 at a yardsale for $25 and it didn't boot windows after the first boot. I only could get this display issue visible on camera was with the broght blue screen)

An external display also didn't work to display anything on mint, anyone know why the screen did these broken lines, and more importantly, does anyone know why mint wasn't working? I used Rufus for the usb stick just as a tutorial said. Is the USB to slow at 10mb read speed? Can Linux mint not display because of firmware? Or is it a different problem completely?

Is it normal that my GPU is running so Hot while installing a game with Q4Wine?

Ok I will try to describe it best I can: I formatted a drive to ext4 in linux mint 22.3; format completed ok. Named the partition, and mounted the drive . Checked the properties of the drive to find that the 8tb drive was only 7.5tb unused with 400.8GB of space already used. How can a drive that is fresh format of the entire drive into a single partition already be using 400.8GB of space? None of my other drives do this.... I am really confused.

specs: drive is WDC WD80EFPX-68C42N0 8TB

Disks app shows as disk is OK. Smart shows no reallocation, no unreadable sectors, no errors that stand out. 1 year of smart power on so not that old. I have done the format a few times now and end up with the same 400.8GB of space being used before I do anything with the drive each time.

Any suggestions or enlightenment out there?

Im trying to get the neofetch to display tomoko instead of the mint logo, i set jp2a and chafa as my image backend and i used realpath to get the source for the image in question, but the mint logo still appears, and chafa and jp2a display the image just fine when used. Is there a fix to this

I've been using windows my entire life but because I hate windows 11 with a burning passion and windows 10 is on its way out I finally decided to fully commit to Linux 2 days ago but unfortunately it's been really frustrating so far. First off, booting up and shutting down feels noticeably slower than before. Next, everything feels a little zoomed out and no matter how much I mess with scaling or font size it doesn't fix the issue. Thirdly the volume on my laptop seems way quieter than it should be and trying a few things I found digging through different forums and threads didn't fix the issue. Last but not least, trying to run a non steam game I downloaded with bottle and then added to my steam library just straight up doesn't work no matter how much I mess with the proton settings. I want to love Linux but if everything that isn't browsing the internet is going to have some sort of issue associated with it I might consider biting the bullet and going back to windows. I'm not giving up yet but I wanted to put this out there in case someone else out there is as frustrated as I am.

So I moved from windows Mint dual boot to only mint a few days ago . I tried everything and everything feels great about mint .

The one thing i want to check so bad was the gaming part . I have heard that mint support most of the games with proton . So i wanted to check that with MARVEL RIVALS . I downloaded rivals ( i already set the compatibility to proton 9.0-4 and force MARVEL RIVALS to use proton 9.0-4 ) . After dow loading everytime i open rivals i get the pop up shown in the picture .

After I click confirm I another pop up saying "UPDATE DRIVER". I checked driver manager but there was no update . Please help me i will attach the system info .

NOTE :

SOLVED AND ABLE TO PLAY MARVEL RIVALS

In Steam settings - compatibility - choose Proton experimental

Then go to library - Right click Marvel Rivals - properties

In general, type the below command in Launch option

"SteamDeck=1 %command%

Then go to compatibility choose proton experimental

For me after this the game works fine . I got the step from protondb you can check that for other games as well .

Hi I just switched to linux mint and wanna clean up a bit - to which i noticed that there are so many apps that easily could just be included in the settings instead of filling up the app list
Is there anyway to do this or at least hide them?
(Also the amount of visual/virtual keyboard apps and settings is crazy)

I want to put linux mint on my gaming PC as windows creates problems. Is it easy to use/user friendly? Can i get steam and Minecraft to work on it? Does AMD software adrenaline edition work? Will it not screw anything up majorly?

One of the best laptop I ever had

In Windows Explorer I used to use large thumbnails. When I'd browse through my CAD files/photos/mp3s/etc in Explorer the thumbnail would show a preview of that file along with the icon of the file format in one of the corners. Can Mint do this too?

Installed Cinnamon on a HP EliteBook 820 G1

Now it just keeps restarting endlessly. Doesn't get past the HP logo.

I can boot Mint if I navigate through "boot from EFI file".

It's been like a month that Flatpak updates have been really slow, around 200-300 KB/s

In general I have problems with Fastly IPs. I'm located in Europe.

I tried using different ISPs in my region and also a VPN, but I got pretty much the same speed every time.

Anyone else having this problem too? any help would be appreciated.

So before this I had an issue with my wifi dongle's drivers that randomly got uninstalled and then slowly lead to my linux being murdered and me having to uninstall and lose a bunch of stuff. And NOW I have the issue where it RANDOMLY just gave me these errors. All overnight. And is now asking for my "login" (Which idek what that is, my username?) and my password that I don't even have enough time to enter in cus the damn thing just says incorrect password before I even press enter. (Not posting cus I do not want my password revealed.)

Now I should probably mention that while I was trying to sleep my pc started up on its own. And I didn't see anything that was displayed cus my monitor was turned off so I just shut down the PC by holding down the power button. My mistake there but I just got back from vacation and I wanted a good rest home.

Oh also before this my PC was randomly freezing, sometimes for a few frames and other times it just needed an instant restart via holding down the power button. That is likely a hardware issue that I have no idea on how to solve.

Uh yea that's about it. I really don't know what else to add onto this.

I rlly just want help in finding a way to restore everything I had. But if that is impossible I do have a backup from a few months ago that could be useful still. Thank you a lot for reading and any help will be appreciated. :3

I have finally made the decision to fully switch over to Linux.. and man has it been a pain in the ass.
Been playing some games and i've been having this stutter issue all across my operating system in games. I just played and beat Guitar Hero: Encore Rocks the 80s. (Dumb game name I know) and every 15 seconds or so, I would drop down to like 15-20 frames before smoothing back out again. Super Smash Brothers Melee does this as well (Slippi) but games like Clone Hero don't seem to have an issue.

I am running Intel i7-11700.
16 GB of Ram
noapic boot parameters.

165hz monitor set to 120hz in HDMI. (I've noticed refresh rate sometimes causes these weird stutters)

Running integrated graphics.

If anyone has any ideas how to help please do! This makes grinds like GH80s fucking miserable.

Steam wasn't running for either Slippi or PCSX2 (80s)

I've been using mint for almost 2 years now and I really wanted to give it a chance.. and for the most part, it worked well.

But every 4-5 months, it boots really slowly. Last time I booted, it took 2 minutes and 50 seconds to get from selecting mint in the grub menu to get to the login screen. After logging in, it took another 1 minute 30 seconds to show the desktop. And after that I had to wait like another 20 seconds until I could move the mouse. And programs took ages to load.. even terminal took like a solid 10 seconds until it was useable.

I already checked "systemd-analyze blame" and it showed the e2scrup service took around a minute and 40 seconds.. that explains the slow booting but that still doesn't explain why after booting everything stays slow as hell.. (at least that's what I thought)

My Specs:
CPU: i7-9700
GPU: AMD RX 6700XT
RAM: 32GB DDR4

I already checked and my SSD seems to be completely healthy. I am also not dualbooting.

I had this happen four times already.. everything works well and loads quickly until it doesn't.. So I've already reinstalled Mint around 4 times because I could never find the cause behind it. Maybe some of you have an idea or the same thing happened for you.

For now I had to move to another distro because I'm tired of moving my stuff over and having to reinstall. But if any of you guys have a solution for me, I would gladly give mint another chance.
