I've been trying to get badges for finishing first in each league and so far it's been pretty fun. This week I noticed someone with higher XP and thought it would be great for my own motivation to keep up with them and kind of battle for the top. But then I noticed something funny so I started taking screenshots....

Exactly 1000 XP gained in 8 minutes. 1400 gained in 11 minutes. 760 XP in 6 minutes. Overall 25,026 XP with only 5 hours? When I've got 40 hours to get 21k? They've also started 5 languages but not made any progress in any. Is it a bot? Like what is there to possibly gain from cheating your way in LingoDeer??

I'm just bummed because keeping up with them is almost impossible (they're currently at 7222xp for the week) even though I've enjoyed all the extra studying I've done while trying! So I'll just have to fall back next week and try again T_T

Unless there's some other activity that hands out tons of XP that I don't know about! Please tell me if there is I just want to try out all of the activities lol

It's annoyed me for a while that Lingodeer doesn't add every word in the lessons to the list of words that can be reviewed. No idea why but that's the way it is.

For example in the Japanese 1 Frequency exercise, none of the frequency words got added to the list of words for review.

Apparently though, you can bookmark words during a lesson. This doesn't really help for words you already didn't bookmark in already completed lessons. And, you don't always know during a lesson which words will automatically be added to the review list and which won't. Furthermore, verbs bookmarked during a lesson get bookmarked in whatever stem form they're in and not in their dictionary or infinitive form.

Through some trial and error, I've figured out the easiest way to go back through older lessons and add those missing words.

* go to expressions review

* find an expression with words that didn't get into the review list

* tap the checkbox and continue

* select the Speaking Practice Mode

* now you can tap a word and bookmark it for review

I've been really enjoying Lingo Deer premium. As well as the iDeer Kids app and the game app. I'm all-in, and I love it.

I'd like to give some feedback on UI elements and the social aspect of the app. I'm on Android, and I assume iOS is the same.

I know that Lingo Deer keeps the social aspect of language learning at bay, and for the most part I enjoy that strategy and agree that it helps keep the focus and seriousness of learning.

However...for how often I receive "gems", there is almost nothing to do with them. It truly feels that way from a user standpoint. The user receives gems along with XP, right? I get them with all of my reviews. The XP is for ranking, along with leagues and badges, okay, cool. Passive and subtle social aspects, but respectable.

But the gems?

They're simply to add a few new (what is it, literally 6 options?) tiny animations on your already-too-tiny avatar. Unless I'm misunderstanding it?

So yourself, as well as other users, can squint even harder to see what your picture is and its tiny animated companion.

TL;DR:

- I think the users' avatars in the ranking areas should be a bit bigger than they currently are. Or zoomable. Something.

- In addition, the tiny animated flair you can add to your avatar needs to be visually bigger along with it.

- Also, could we get some new flairs? There are only around 8-10?

- I'd love to be able to spend gem currency on something else besides a tiny animated flair for my tiny avatar. Perhaps we could use gems to customize our app experience further with theme color choices or put silly hats on the Deer mascot or something.

Anyway, I don't want it to become gamified, that's what the other Lingo Deer apps are for (learning through games), but the disparity between how often a user receives gems and what the user can actually do with gems is really big, I think.

Love the amazing work you guys are all doing, and I recommend this app to everyone I know.

Hope you are doing well. We have several Android improvements rolling out, including smarter tone recognition, better answer feedback, and new ways to personalize your reviews.

Smarter tone recognition in spelling exercises

This should be especially helpful for Vietnamese learners.

If you prefer typing without tone marks, that is completely fine. We will check the letters you entered without penalizing you for omitting the tones.

However, once you start adding tone marks, they need to be correct. If you use the wrong tone, the answer will be marked incorrect even when the rest of the spelling is right.

In short: you can skip the tones, but if you attempt them, accuracy counts. 👀

Incorrect answers now underline the actual mistake

We fixed an issue that sometimes underlined the part of your answer you got right instead of the part you got wrong.

Not exactly the most helpful feedback. Sorry about that one. 😅

The app should now correctly highlight where the mistake occurred.

You can now bookmark any word

Previously, bookmarking was limited by the key vocabulary selected for each lesson. Now, you can bookmark any word you encounter, even if it does not appear on the lesson’s official key word list.

Tap the star, then find and practice everything you saved under:

REVIEW → Bookmarked

Your personal vocabulary collection just got a lot more flexible.

Customize how new SRS cards appear

If a giant pile of untouched SRS reviews has been silently judging you from the Review tab, this one is for you.

Android users can now use Customize new cards to:

• Set the maximum number of new cards shown each day

• Mix up the order in which new cards appear

This means you do not have to review every card from Unit 1 before seeing anything from Unit 2, then Unit 3, and so on. You can keep the daily workload manageable while reviewing a broader mix of material.

Over 5 years ago I purchased a Lingodeer + DeerPlus lifetime membership. I can log into Lingodeer, but when I try to get into DeerPlus I get the error: "Oops, there's no account associated with this email." I tried the email I had when I made the purchase in addition to the email I use now, which works when logging into Lingodeer. Thanks in advance for any help!

Hey Deer learners, we’ve got a pretty useful update this week, especially if you’re on iOS.

iOS

SRS Practice modes are finally out on iOS
At long last, iOS users now have the newer SRS Practice modes too.

The idea is simple: instead of just flipping through flashcards, you review with real LingoDeer-style exercises, then the app asks how well you knew the answer afterward. So you get the structure of proper exercises plus the memory tracking of SRS.

Basically, less “did I vaguely recognize this?” and more “can I actually use this?”

Alternative answers and “Tell Me Why” now work in the Correct Answer field
When you check the correct answer, you may now also see alternative accepted answers and mistake explanations.

This is especially helpful when your answer was close, but the app still said no and you’re sitting there like, “Okay, but why are you like this?”

Small note: these features use AI. If you’d rather not use AI in your learning, you can turn them off here:

ME > Settings > AI features > Alternative answers / Mistake explanation

Literal translations added to the Correct Answer field
You can now view literal translations for sentences when checking the correct answer.

This should be useful for those “I understand the meaning, but what is this sentence actually doing?” moments, especially in languages where the word order decides to go hiking without a map.

Android

New “Listen along” review mode
Android now has a new hands-free review option.

Choose one unit or several, pick what you want to hear, such as words, sentences, or both, and hit Play.

You can also:

• speed it up or slow it down
• loop it
• shuffle it
• set repetitions
• use a sleep timer

This is for when you want review practice while walking, cleaning, commuting, cooking, or staring at the ceiling pretending you’re being productive.

Please try it out and tell us what you think. We’re especially curious how people use Listen along compared with normal review modes.

Hi! I initially downloaded the app in 2018 when it was free and used it for a couple of years.Today I decided to redownload, as I know many things now are just for paid version but I can still progress normally in the Japanese course and use offline learning.

Is this normal? Or did I get some access from those years?

Hi everyone, here are this week’s LingoDeer Android updates:

New features

• You can now add your own notes to words and sentences. These can be found later in the Review tab under My notes.
• You can now create different folders for bookmarked items, which should make saved content easier to organize.
• You can now adjust the phonetic script color for languages that include romanization.

Bug fix

• Restored the TEST option in the Japanese Alphabet section.

In the web version of LingoDeer, during word review, could we have an option to only play the word after clicking the check button?

For my learning, I think it would be useful to try to force myself to remember the word without hearing it spoken beforehand.

I use the spelling review feature a lot, so not having that "spoiler" would probably help me more!

This is a bug that always happens to me when I use the new version on the website (it has never happened in the app).

It simply unlocks the next lesson without completing the previous one.
For example:

There are lessons called "Life 1" and "Life 2". When you unlock Life 1 on the website, it automatically unlocks Life 2 as well without completing Life 1 :(

This ends up being a problem because the app will take that into account when I go back to using it (either in the app or on the website), and the tests will assume that I already completed Life 1 and am now on Life 2 (giving me words and questions that I still don't know).

Today, it won't stay signed in. I sign in, it says welcome back or whatever, and then I'm signed out again. Rinse and repeat. Firefox, same issue in incognito. Seem to stay signed in in Safari, but that's not a solution for me.

Hello my deers,

We have a fresh LingoDeer update this week, especially for Japanese learners. Some of these are new, some are features Android users already got recently, and some are small-but-important improvements that should make studying feel smoother.

Android

We revised the Japanese Alphabet & Pronunciation guide with clearer explanations and practice exercises for: Dakuon, Handakuon, Sokuon, Yōon, and long vowels.

And yes, we included IPA transcriptions too, because apparently we woke up and chose linguistics.

This should make the kana/pronunciation section more useful for beginners who are still figuring out why Japanese spelling looks simple for five minutes and then suddenly says, “Surprise.”

iOS

We added customizable exercise preferences, including: autoplay audio, muting exercise tiles, hiding translations, and more.

Basically, you can now make exercises behave a little more like how you personally want to study, instead wanting to throw your phone out your window. .

We also improved Script Style settings for Japanese, so you have more control over how Japanese appears while learning.

And finally, we added katakana to the in-app keyboard. Your keyboard is now slightly more powerful and slightly more intimidating.

Across both platforms

We also fixed several bugs and made performance improvements.

Nothing glamorous, but very necessary. Like stretching before exercise, except for apps.

I see that the courses have language levels listed, for instance the Japanese course goes to B1. Obviously, like all apps LingoDeer is not a substitute for formal education in a language. But say I completed both Japanese 1 and Japanese 2 in the app, taking notes as I went, then took a Japanese 202 (B2) class in college. Could I do this, or would I be jumping in the deep end?
