Personal Record First powerlifting meet in the books! Went 8/9 and hit a 232.5kg / 512.6 lbs Deadlift PR to finish the day (M45 / 110kg)

I’ve been training for the past three years and yesterday I stepped onto the platform for my first powerlifting meet at the USAPL “City of Angels” Open at Barbell Brigade in Los Angeles. I competed as a 110kg Masters 1B (45M).

My ultimate goal was to hit a 1200 lb total. I ended up totaling 542.7 kg (1196.4 lbs), falling just short of the milestone, but I went 8/9 and hit two all-time PRs on the platform.

Lifts

Squat:

Attempt 1: 170kg / 374.8 lbs ⚪⚪⚪
Attempt 2: 180kg / 396.0 lbs ⚪⚪⚪
Attempt 3: 187.7kg / 413.4 lbs ⚪⚪⚪ (All-Time PR)

Bench:

Attempt 1: 114kg / 253.5 lbs ⚪⚪⚪
Attempt 2: 122.5kg / 270.1 lbs ⚪⚪⚪
Attempt 3: 127.5kg / 281.1 lbs 🔴🔴🔴 (Missed the lift)

Deadlift:

Attempt 1: 210kg / 463.0 lbs ⚪⚪⚪
Attempt 2: 222.5kg / 490.5 lbs ⚪⚪⚪
Attempt 3: 232.5kg / 512.6 lbs ⚪⚪⚪ (All-Time PR)

Competing was a fun, yet highly overstimulating experience. It was hot (no AC but big open doors) the noise levels were intense (announcers, overlapping speakers, huge crowd), and I was lifting in the afternoon/evening which is outside my normal training window. Because of the timing, I had to lean on more caffeine than usual, leaving me wired and jittery.

The warm-up room was the biggest learning curve. It was harder to time my warmups than I anticipated. I felt rushed getting ready for squats and bench, but I learned my lesson and adjusted to start earlier for deadlifts.

I was the only male Masters lifter, so I automatically took Gold in my division (hey, I'll take it!), and my total would have been good enough to earn Bronze in the 110kg Open division. All in all, it was amazing to realize the results of three years of effort in front of an audience. I feel accomplished and definitely caught the competing bug.

Form Check Looking for bench advice

Hi. I’ve been on a new program benching more often and that seems to be going well by adding more strength in both reps and weight. Someone at the gym mentioned I bench too wide. I’ve attached a video for reference. I currently have my middle finger on the knurl break of the bar. Any advice is appreciated!

Form Check Dip Form?

I broke my hip in an accident early last year, have steadily gotten back into training, but it’s been a long recovery.

Randomly fell back in love with dips avoiding exercises I couldn’t really push yet.

Hit 80kg, slowly heading for 100. How’s my form?

About 5 weeks out, mitigating some adductor pain so training depth cut about an inch short. Feeling good!

Immediately after taking this video, I tried the 45 pound dumbbell and got it but I felt like a tool for recording in the first place so I didn’t get that one recorded. Next time!

Form Check Deadlift Form Check

Thumbnail youtube.com

I’ve been trying not to pull my hips back as much when I begin the lift while also hinging as I stand up, not standing up and then hinging.

I have a couple questions if someone can answer: Deadlift is a lower back exercise right? I know people always say lift with your legs but shouldn’t a substantial part of the load be placed on your lower back?

My other question is that, if I should be using my legs foremost, should I begin the deadlift almost like a squat, with my chest all the way up and my legs at 90 degrees?

I’ve watched a lot of DL videos and from what I’ve been able to tell it’s almost as if your back should be parallel with the bar which seems like it would be a compromising position to me.

If someone could help enlighten me I’d be greatly appreciative.

Form Check Need help with power clean form

Thumbnail youtube.com

I’ve been working on my power clean form and my full cleans for a couple of months, and generally I can keep my feet in a good position when it’s light but as the weight gets heavier my feet widen dramatically and it compromises my catch. Any drills or advice to fix this?
